I've driven past Carollo's a million times over the last 5 years and have never once had the desire to stop in - it's about the seediest-looking place you can picture. Â However, it kept coming up with rave reviews on my Yelp searches, so I decided to give it a shot for takeout. Â Boy, was that a great decision! Â The food is AMAZING and the portions are gigantic. Â Great value for what you pay.
Only two complaints that are holding me back from a 5-star review:
1) describing the bar as a dive is a compliment. Â I am always extremely uncomfortable waiting for my food, bc the atmosphere is THAT seedy. Â As long as they offer takeout and delivery, you couldn't pay me enough to eat there (the food is so good that I might reconsider if that was the only way to get it). Â
2) Apparently they don't have a website, which is ridiculous. Â I found a picture of half of an old menu on a google search and I use that and other Yelpers' reviews to order. Â If you're going to offer takeout and delivery, why on earth wouldn't you have an online menu??
I love this place! For a dive bar, it has great atmosphere and crowd. The food is f'n unbelievable! You need to try everything in their menu. They have huge portions for those with a big appetite. The bartenders and staff are awesome. They'll get you what you want and will always check up on you to make sure you're taken care of. This is a great spot to go to and I suggest you stop by and experience it yourself.
Review Source:The food is fantastic! Whether you're in the mood for a simple cheesesteak, or something fancy - the plate they'll put down in front of you is guaranteed delicious!!! Their seafood bisque is to die for, as is their Chicken Oscar. Even though the seating is tight and the place isn't much to look at, we keep coming back again & again!
Review Source:Just wanted to add one more positive review for Carollo's. We dined there recently and had another great meal. I had another shrimp dish, the parmigiana, which had big, deep fried shrimp covered in mozzarella with side of red-sauced fettucine, along with a cup of crab bisque --- both delicious and blissfully satisfying. My wife had the steamers and vegetable medley, which contained the whole garden in a very light sauce; excellent
Our waitron was outstanding, constantly checking on us while also keeping an eye on the bar crowd.
Okay, the jukebox is a little loud, but the food and service at Carollo's will have you leaving with a big smile.
Read someone else's review which stated that Carollo's was "charmingly rough". Couldn't be more well said. When you enter, just keep your eyes moving past the front seedy dive bar crowd & you will see a modest dining section. They've slightly classed up the joint by adding table cloths. Very large menu. Mostly Italian dishes. We split the chicken saltimbocca - great decision because it was ridiculously huge. Good food at modest prices. And the people watching made the overall ambiance more enjoyable. We were just passing through on the NJ turnpike looking for an option other than freeway fast food. If this is what you're also looking for, it's definitely worth the exit.
Review Source:This has always been one of my favorite restaurants. Sure it's divey and always full of local drunks who walk there, but their food is fantastic and affordable. The servers have always been friendly and efficient. I remember eating here on a particularly scorching summer day a few years back when the A/C was broken and I don't believe they had the industrial-sized fan yet, but people stayed and sweated so they could get their Carollo's food fix. The red wine was almost hot.
The lack of ambiance IS the ambiance, and I doubt you'd be expecting anything fancy from the location, parking lot or building anyway. The dining area is small and fills up quickly, so I tend to roll in here on a weekday afternoon for lunch when I can.
Their marinara is the best I've ever tasted and the poorly-named vegetable combination is the best appetizer to start with. I've brought the pickiest of friends and family members here and they have done nothing but rave about their meals.
You would think it was a dive bar or friends-only bar when you drive by, but Carollo's has AWESOME Italian food. Â You get a great salad, garlic bread and entree if you're going Italian. Â It's about 20 minutes away, but we stop in whenever we're in the mood for good portions. Â I recommend the Gnocci! Â Few seats in the dining area, but it's usually only 50% full anway.
