The atmosphere is good during their Karokee nights but their food can be improved. Their sauce is never consistent sometimes it's very tomatoish and at other times has a good kick to it. The few dishes I've had there lack a fresh taste.

Was back in Tyler over the Christmas holiday and went by to get what was always one of the best chili rellenos in Tyler.  I don't know what's happened but I was pretty disappointed.  This wasn't even close to the quality of food we used to get from Carretas Cafe when we lived in East Texas.  I don't know if they changed owners or what, but I won't be going back.  Food was luke warm and that was the toughest, soggiest chili relleno I've ever had.  Left a good portion of it on the plate.  Sad to see a place that used to one of my favorites go downhill.

So I decided to try Carretas Cafe based on other reviews!!! Let's start by saying I stood at the entrance with what felt like an eternity to be seated and the place was pretty much empty...after 5pm I might add... Anywho I Ordered a cup of queso and the waitress literally brought me a cup of cheese with a spoon in it....really? Is this order foreign to Tyler Texas or do you think maybe I could get some chips?

I ordered the  highly recommended "pollo loco" as my entree and when it was served I was pleasantly surprised it looked great. I will have to say I was not expecting the Asian inspired flavor combination that exploded out of this tortilla. I'm not saying it's not good because it was very delicious...I'm just saying that it was not the savory smoky grilled chicken I was expecting for a Tex Mex location. The charro beans were excellent and the spanish rice was generic...

I might return to this location when I am in town and in  the mood for Asian inspired food!!!!

Also as a side note strangely enough the waitress sat down with me unsolicited and commenced to telling me her life story!!! Definitely an experience!!!!

"""Carretas is a point of infinite disappointment""" Is an understatement, but I do agree with (Lindsay B.) on this one here!  The food is without any flavor, it tastes like last weeks specials" which isn't any special here". The meat's not fresh, the plates were micro waved, and the grilled shrimp were greasy and discussing you couldn't stand it.  Wow what a disappointment after seeing all the good reviews and stars. I've been in this town on and off for over 8 years now, and can honestly say the people around here could eat a deflated football with A-1 sauce and give it 4 stars. I really think these people's taste buds have left the building. (Sorry I call it like I see it!) Even the people / employees there were rude and looked like they didn't want to be there even less than I did....
Oh yeah they give you a price of a draft and bottle and the prices on the bill are off .50 per, they couldn't even get that right! May-be if we had 12 or 15 drinks before it wouldn't of mattered. Hey just a thought here, why Smith County is dry. You'll have to be really intoxicated to enjoy this place, nasty but true!

No way.... keep out is the only thing I can say about that place...And pray you don't get sick. And that's being nice!!!!!

Carretas is a point of infinite disappointment to me, perhaps because it is the stepchild of the former La Carreta's, where my college boyfriend and I downed queso and nachos into the wee hours of the night. Carretas has moved down the street and tried to glitz it up, and the result is an ambience best relegated to chain restaurants and food that is a 4 out of 10 on the tex-mex scale. And when you've got 18 million tex-mex joints in Tyler, why not go to a 9 or 10?

Food is not bad.  The atmosphere is lacking any originality.  Service was good.

Wow, I went to La Carreta's today and it was even better than the first time I went.  I had the Pollo Loco.  $13.79- enough for 2 people or for left overs.  It was tender, juicy chicken breast that had been marinated for 2 days in some kind of orgasm- for- your mouth marinade.  Then it was fire-grilled perfectly. I usually don't care for boneless, skinless breast meat because it is always a little on the dry side, but this was juicy.   It was served on a bed of grilled onions and a side of charro beans, (really good) and mexican rice, (better than most).  The queso was great and the grilled shrimp was spicy hot, grilled and then served in some kind of red pepper oil.  I actually would have rather had just the grilled shrimp.  The red pepper covered up the grill taste.  The 6 pieces of shrimp was a $2.99 add on to the meal.
I tasted my hubby's very yummy pork tamale.  The masa was perfect and pork tender and moist.  I hate dried out masa and pork.  The masa was also flavorful as some can be bland.

There are many dinner and lunch entrees' under $10.00.

I can't forget the waiter was great.  This was our second time here and we have had spot on service.  Lance was there with a smile refilling our drinks and chip baskets.

If you are ever in Tyler, try this place.  I noticed a ton of restaurants when driving down Hwy 69, but this one should be given a try by all Tex-Mex lovers!  It was worth the 2 hour drive today.
