Picture wine served out of vending machines in a strip mall. Doesn't sound like the classiest experience, does it? Well, it's surprisingly good. I ended my truncated Ventura county wine tour here and I feel like I could have skipped the previous places and been just as happy.
You do miss out on the chit-chat and education of a tasting at a winery but in exchange you get a massive selection, zero wait, zero sales hustling, and incredibly cheap and delicious food. It's not the fanciest food, but it's insanely inexpensive for a restaurant with table service. My date and I both got the Cave Girl with Angus. It's a little fancier than the Cave Man with melted brie and arugula. Next time I'm in Malibu I will definitely be tempted to revisit.
I had so much fun here! I loaded up a wine debit card with 20.00 and sat down to an amazing experience,. the wines are your choice,. you fill your g;lass from enomatic wine machines,. 1,3 or 5 ounce pours,. the menu though,.OMG,. filet of beef with rosemary mashed potato OR a crispy pork belly with coconut curry rice and a chocolate ganache dipped pork cracklin'! OR fried green tomatoes with tri pepper jelly,. grilled salmon,. cheese platters,.desserts,. we had the honeydew jalapeno ice cream,. soo good! I will be back! the atmosphere inside the cave is nice,. but just so you know,. you are in the back of a business park strip mall wine warehouse,. ok? this is not a beachfront "with views" eatery,. it's all about being cozy and all about the wine and the food,. kitchen is open walled so you can view everything,. clean and sparkling! very friendly service,. their beer selection is special,. the wines were ok,. that being partly my fault because I couldn't make a choice from the 32 available.. but a few of the tastes I had were delish! i'd like to go back here with more $$ and try lot's more of the food menu,. that was the best part for me,. and the prices for gourmet little plates was very good,. I don't think you can beat it for what you actually get and the care taken in the prep for the price,.perfectly fair. a good time was had by all... if I would suggest anything to them,. it would be to offer more local wines... a foodie wine lovers heaven,.
Review Source:I go here with my friends whenever I'm in town. I love the ambiance and the service is usually very attentive. The variety of wines are usually pretty good and they have tasting notes, as well as, picks from owners. I've eaten there a few times and i've been happy with everything. My favorite is probably snacking on the cheese dish with fruit and olives.
Review Source:My husband and I have been here a number of times and it has always been absolutely wonderful! The atmosphere is lovely, the staff is courteous, the food is amazing, and  I love the wine machines.
Last time I had the gelato combo for desert the yam coconut one was to die for!
I honestly can not think of anything bad to say.
VENUE: Â Weird "wine cave" room tucked behind a wine store. Â I almost missed it when I walked into the store. Â I went next door, and back in again. Â Very confusing. Â There were no staff there to help me find The Cave. Â
WINE: Â OK selection. Â The card-in-the-dispenser was a nice way to try different wines. Â FOOD: Â Decent, but need to try more on the menu, but ...
SERVICE: Â Indifferent and odd. Â i had extra credit left on my card, so I asked if I could get a refund on the balance. Â They just looked at me all weird like I was crazy. Â I asked again, and he just points to the manager I guess. Â The manager had the same "no ones home" stare. Â He just said "no", and looked away. Â If they were a bit more accommodating, perhaps I would be less bitter on my departure. Â That pretty much did it for me ... I'd rather eat the $10 left on my card than go back there again.
A few moments ago I realized I have not rated my most frequented/loved place in Ventura! Â I typically go to The Cave once a week, like clockwork. Â It's THEE best place for wine shopping, tasting, and food in the tri-county area.
From the moment you step in, you'll be like a kid in a candy shop, except that you are an adult in a sea of wine. Â Bottles upon bottles greet you at the entrance, with amazing prices. Â Seriously, their wine is the best prices. Â Better than TJ's, better than Von's 30% off sales, better than BevMo. Â After you are done drooling, you make your way back to 'The Cave'. Â It's literally a man-made cave with a great atmosphere and lighting.
As a cullinarian, I am always impressed with their food AND wine selection. Â You load up a card with money and then you can sample 1,3, or 5 oz samples of many wines. Â They are constantly rotating so you are always able to try something new! Â Their food is crazy gorilla good (I don't use that phrase often) no matter what you order. Â I have blindly ordered off the menu many times and everything I'm served is always perfection on a plate with a side of finesse. Â They can do no wrong with what they serve you.
The staff is always extremely friendly and since I'm a regular they usually call me by my first name which is awesome. Â Kayla & Nicole are always smiling, and Dre is always entertaining. Â The new Executive Chef is awesome and is already impressing me with his new specialties. Â In addition there is a new waiter named Jason and he cleans tables like it's going out of style. Â Seriously, I'm not even joking, I saw someone spill a centimeter of wine once and within seconds he came running up to clean it. Â It's like he has a 6th sense or something. Â Maybe it's because he's from New Zealand and they train in the art of fine dining and cleanliness from birth? ;)
So bring a date here, come with friends, or just bring you Mom, you won't regret it! Â If you don't like it, I will literally punch you in the face. Â Ok, maybe figuratively. Enjoy your stay at The Cave, I'll probably see you there!
I will give it the unique place to visit and as a result worth stopping in for one or two tastings. The food was actually very good. I had the sea bass on risotto and it was okay and my partner had another meal and raved about it, just cannot recall what it was at the moment. The place is strange in why would locals come back here? I guess to try different wines by the 1,3,or 5 oz , but for the rest of us it just felt choppy getting up for an ounce and then another and then another. Maybe I should have had a finger-food item to eat ...interesting experience. Worth at least one visit...and I guess I have to go back some year when in CA to use the last six dollars on my card.
Review Source:My husband and I attended the Cakebread Cellars wine and food pairing dinner last evening. Â
This was a 5 course dinner, paired with first champagne, then whites, finishing with reds. Â What a delicious culinary experience!! Â The food was awesome, and paired with one of my favorite winerys! Â
I have never had anything at the Cave that I didn't like, and plan to attend more of these dinners.
It was a great way to finish a weekend. Â
Great job!!!
This Review is strictly for the service.
This was actually my 3rd time going back to The Cave. The food is amazing, i honestly don't think I've ever ordered anything i didn't like off of the menu so food wise... 5stars.... Now on to the service review...
My friend and i had made plans to go back to the cave Saturday night, its just one of those places you crave. Well, we got there at about 630 on a Saturday night and began to fill our wine cards (needed in order to taste wine) and asked the hostess how long the wait would be... she told us about 20 minutes (friend turned to me asked me what i thought, and i said yea that's fine and then we told the hostess that's fine)  and asked us how many were in our party (2) we figured she put us on the list since she had told us we could taste wine while waiting for a table. Well about 30ish minutes later i went up to ask how much longer it would be and come to find out our names werent even on the list! Are you kidding me right now!! So i put down our names and so the wait began again... DISORGANIZED is all i can say... finally after waiting  another 45 minutes one of the hostesses had come up to us to let us know that our table would be ready in a second and she pointed it out to us... after waiting for about 10 minutes waiting for the hostess to come back and tell us and take us to table i noticed that the original hostess who never took our name was about to give the table to a party of 4.... REALLY!! So i walked up to the front and asked the other hostess if my friend and i could go take a seat at the table and all i got was a "oh yea sure." Now we are finally seated another hostess came over and asked if we were waiting for 2 more and of course we said no and then told us the specials and asked if we wanted appetizers... 5 seconds later the waitress came over and asked us if we wanted to hear the specials and if we wanted appetizers..of course we let her know someone had just asked us right before... (maybe my friend and i were just frustrated from waiting so long at this point... but there should be some organization as to who is doing what so we don't have to answer the same questions)...we finally ordered food from our waitress and about 5 minutes from that point the hostess came up to us and asked us if we were ready to order... there werent any menus on the table... i would have hoped that would have been a sign that we had ordered... apparently not... so again with the repetition now... we let this one know we had already ordered..The Caves saving grace came out... The food honestly saved this place that night...
The Cave has a lot of potential...switching to table service was a great idea however there needs to be some sort of organization as to who is doing what.... the hostesses need to be on top of who comes in and who wants a table... from the point we got there to the moment we left was 3 hours. I'm sure most people would have left by this point (630- 939) but the food is just to darn good. We will see when we go back... not sure we are in for another 3 hour wait.
Such an fun place... cuisine... atmosphere! The Cave is my go-to spot for date night or girls night!! The wine options are phenomenal (with clever self-pour spouts), and the menu never disappoints! Small plates with exquisite culinary detail! The Chef's take pride in their art, and their pallet is constantly changing! Love the options!
Dre is a delight as well! He makes my group feel as though we are the most important people in the world- every time we see him! Whether we are or not... it keeps us coming back for more!
One just principle from the depths of a cave is more powerful than an army -- Jose Marti
The frame of the cave leads to the frame of man -- Stephen Gardiner
If the frame of a cave leads to the frame of man, does the silhouette of a wine bottle lead to the shape of a person's soul? Â Or just the amount it takes to get drunk? ;) Â
Stopped for lunch at The Cave in the middle of a Ventura wine tasting trip. Â They are a block away from Four Brix winery and adjacent to (and owned) by the Ventura Wine Company. Â It is a small plate oriented restaurant with surprisingly good food. Â In fact, depending on server this might be a five star establishment, for what they do, but service was very slow and inattentive. Â Water glasses were not refilled and we made a game of stacking plates to see how long it would take, based on height of plates, before they took them away. Â They got pretty high.
The people were nice though...the young blonde hostess/server/runner (whose job contract probably specifies she wear low cut attire) was very pleasant and cheerful. Â The server was nice too but again, we didn't really get much service in between ordering. Â I was impressed he got my turkey burger special order right though since he did it by memory and took another order before placing mine.
Speaking of that turkey burger: it might be the best version yet of an admittedly bland menu item. Â The burger was juicy, the condiments flavorful, the accompanying chips outstanding. Â
The small cheese plate appetizer was the perfect size...love the fact you can mix and match your cheeses. Â More restaurants should offer that option. Â Â The fries ordered were outstanding...the only fail was a weird tasting shrimp spring roll where maybe the lettuce was a bit off. Â
You can buy a card for $5 to order wines from an enomatic machine (32 choices either white or red) or pick up a bottle next door with no corkage charged. Â I bought a chilled 2011 Cloudy Bay Sauvingon Blanc that was a refreshing treat after a morning and early afternoon of all reds. Â
The interior is cool, and yes cave like. Â Not too dark either but definitely has mood lighting. Â In the back, the view of the wine shop is obscured.
An excellent find close to the Ventura and Oxnard wineries!
Last Friday I was pulled out to this little industrial plaza in Ventura to celebrate the birthday of a friend of mine. I don't go out in Ventura much as I'm the kind of gal who finds far more value in driving south to LA over heading 20 minutes north but the birthday girl is a local here so whatcha gonna do? Let's start with the positives:
The Cave is attached to a nicely-stocked wine store for any BYOB or to-go needs you may have.
The open kitchen with bar seating allows those in the front part of the space to watch the chefs if you're into that sort of thing, which I am.
Fair priced wine in dispenser modules that allow you to choose 1oz, 3oz or 5oz pours allow you to tailer your experience to either a night of tasting or a night of full-glass fun.
Food selection was interesting and fair-priced. We tried a number of small plates, apps and entrees at our table and no one complained about their food but I don't feel like anyone was really raving either.
Now the bads:
In order to get wine you use a pre-loaded card in the machines. Fine, this is a familiar system but can someone please explain to me why there's a $5 fee for these cards? The technology can't be that expensive and that's kind of a steep fee when I'm not a regular here and just want to have a couple tastes of wine. The cards are proprietary so you know you're going to profit from my balance that's sitting on the card as well as from every glass I actually do buy so is a $5 fee really necessary? Maybe it's nit-picky but it was annoying.
Also, the machines, as strange as this may seem were difficult at times. Our group was made up of 20 and 30-somethings all of whom are pretty good with tech and we had several issues throughout the night. Some of the staff was great when approached about said issues but others acted annoyed and put-upon which was just ridiculous.
The Cave itself is a bit hokey - it's not authentic at all, much more cheap Disney cave than real underground lair. But plenty of people seem to think it's a romantic locale so who is this single gal to argue?
I really wanted to like The Cave but writing this review has made me realize I'm actually pretty down on the place. Will I return? Probably not by choice but then again it's rarely my choice to be hanging out in Ventura anyway. Anyone want my $5 card?
Easily among the top five of favorite places to eat and drink in Ventura. I was a little apprehensive about the enomatic machines at first, but I warmed up to them when I discovered you can get a full glass of wine if you don't feel like getting up every few minutes to replenish your vino. Â
Excellent menu (their weekend brunch is stellar), friendly service, comfortable atmosphere. I do find it a bit chilly for my delicate little wimpy bones...but it is called THE CAVE after all.
Let's get real, Ventura lacks good venues for the wine lover. Â Sure, there is an overpriced wine bar or two around, but if you are looking for someplace with a great wine selection and good food, then look no further than The Cave.
I must admit, the idea of drinking in a "cave" is not one that ever really made it to my bucket list, but it is much more charming than the description leads you to believe. Â
There are typically 16 white and red wines to choose from, and you can select your pour size from 1 oz., 3 oz. or 5 oz. Â They have great little bites to accompany your wine selection, and the retail area has a great selection and equally great pricing. Â All in all, a must visit in Ventura.
Took my girlfriend here and it was our first time at the Cave. When we got there and it was packed with some of Ventura's "classy" people. When we arrived we had to wait a couple of minutes to hear a "hello". When we arrived they assumed we've been there before because they started talking about things I had no idea about. When I explained to them that it was my first time there, they were kind enough to explain how the Cave works. Their dining room was filled with people so we had to wait at the bar before we were seated. Seriously, the bar area is small, but awesome. You have a bird's eye view of the kitchen and you can still order food and drinks. We wanted to sit inside because they had live music (guy with acoustic guitar playing rock classics) and the ambiance was more romantic in there. Once we were seated we used all the $40 of the balance we put in the card. Their selection is great for such a small place. They had some local wines and some exotic, foreign ones that required a translator to help you say the name of the place where it's from. Their menu is awesome! They have small dishes that are very tasteful yet affordable. I ordered a small meat lovers pizza ($8) and my girlfriend ordered some small pork chops ($8). The dishes were awesome!! They were small but very delicious.
The fact that you don't have to wait for someone to serve you drinks is what I love the best. After you order your food you can get up and check out the wines while you wait. The good-bad part is that people who are waiting for a table are standing around the wine dispensers. It's great because it gives the place a lounge type vibe, but it's bad because it makes a small space even smaller. But hey, whatever floats your boat. Nevertheless, I talked with some people about their wine experience and knowledge while I waited for the food. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed ourselves there.
When our dinner was over we waited quite a bit of time to get our check. Moreover, the fact that we still had a balance on the card kind of forced us to drink more wine (oh, the humanity!!). Overall, we had a great time! We definitely plan on coming back.
Fabulous place for your first date. Getting up and moving around to sample wines breaks up awkward moments and gives you something to talk about. Plus, wine is just so classy!
They have a variety of wines to sample from fancy enomatic machines, and the boyfriend and I had fun pairing them with the food. They have since added another dispenser on the far wall with whites. More moscatos and viogniers? Yes please!
Small plates-
We shared 3 small plates. The balsamic glazed chicken came with peanut mashed potatoes and had strong Thai flavors reminiscent of chicken pad thai. There were a few chopped peanuts amidst the potatoes but the peanut flavor could be stronger. Cod with lemon herb cream had beautiful presentation and was light in flavor.
However, both of these paled in comparison to the grilled marinated beef flat iron with fig & prosciutto. Definitely the best of the night! The garlic maple sauce is D-I-V-I-N-E divine. We mopped it up with the rest of our bread, it was just too good to go to waste. The beef is tender and cooked perfectly. Mmmm just couldn't get enough, highly recommend.
They are small plates though, so the portions are just right for two people to taste and pair with wine. Order a burger if you're 7 and up on the hunger scale.
Dessert-
Baked camenbert with raspberry compote and coconut macaroons! Yup, it was as delicious as it sounds. The puff pastry was light and crispy and the raspberry compote paired perfectly with the warm cheese-y goodness. The macaroons are really sweet; there was also an unexpected bonus chocolate nut cluster. Heavenly! I would go back just for this dessert (and the beef).
The wines-
A very wide range of selection of whites and reds of varying prices (from like $0.88/oz to $10/oz of high class wine). Water and a rinse bucket too for those that need it. No complaints here!
The chef brought out all of our dishes and personally made sure that they were to our liking. Fantastic service! The ambiance is intimate but I wish they could dim the lights just a bit more. It can also get rather loud, but they had a fabulous acoustic guitarist which was the cherry on top of a perfect date.
All in all the meal was under $40 (including tip but not the wine). What a steal considering the ambiance, the quality of the food, wine, and service.
FIVE STARS!
My first experience here was all positive. Host and servers were helpful and polite. Place is fairly small but even on a Friday night the wait was reasonable and besides you can get your own wine by the ounce. Why aren't there more places like this?
I was able to try about eight different varieties for less than $20 and a couple of small plates for less than $15 so overall a great time for a reasonable price. Â While you are trying the wine you can't help but find new friends who are also trying new wines. Compare and offer your opinions, it's like we're all good friends here.
There was even a guy playing acoustic guitar to add to the ambiance!
I have love this place since they opened. The small plate/small price is perfect for me as i can never decide what i want. here you can get more than one thing and I have never had anything bad.
Here's a great story:
We did not bring our card...I guess it had been awhile. No problem, Carlos insisted on looking it up by our name. As my husband is saying don't bother, its only a couple of bucks, Carlos smiles and informs him we have a $91 balance...Sweet!..from 2009, a Christmas gift from me to him that he neglected to use.
Great wine selection, unexpectedly fabulous food. A little busier than last time we were here. Its a wonder they aren't packed. I love the self service wine and a chance to try new ones with out breaking the bank getting too wasted.
Dre and Family at The Wine Cave create a true dining and vino-tastic experience! A must try- although I don't want too many people to know because it's crowded already!
We have been here over 3 times in the past few weeks (I have even caught hubby going there without me) and each time we have enjoyed a different part of the menu and a wide selection of wines! Crab and Spinach dip delicious, Shrimp Cocktail simply refreshing (with a bloody mary cocktail), but the tilapia tacos were by far the best~Sorry Blue Stove(my favorite tapas restaurant to date).
I am a fan... I want to go back....
Great small plates of food and plenty of wine.... We tried the cheese plate, a small meat pizza and some other tasty dishes..... all around enjoyable.
The set up is unique...
The only negative is that the "Cave" can get a little crowded.
We will go back for sure.
My boyfriend and I went in last night (Friday) for the first time. Â We were seated right away. Â From the moment we sat down I was absolutely in love with this place. Â The dining room is really cool - just like a cave. They had light background music when we arrived and later a guitarist came in.
Dre took GREAT care of us! He explained how the wine machines work and we had a lot of fun sampling different wines. I liked the way it's setup is so you can try 3 different pour sizes, a small one at first is recommended. Â We started with a $30 card and that was the perfect amount for for us both over the course of about an hour and a half. Â We were having such a great time we didn't take any tasting notes which now I regret. Â They do offer small pads of paper and pencils for that.
We split a $5 cheese plate (brie and gorganzola) which went along nicely with our wine. It also came with a few aple slices, grapes, and walnuts. Â I ordered the eggplant caprese and he had the salmon salad. Both were the perfect portion, presented beautifully, and delicious. Â Next time I'll make sure to save room for a dessert - I had intended to try their gelato.
Everyone we encountered was smiling and friendly from Dre to the manager, Carlos, and the other staff that seated us, filled water, and delivered the food. Â It was a fun, romantic date and I intend to go back... Often! Â I already told my mom that I am going to bring her to The Cave.
We purchased 2 bottles of wine to take home and this will definitely be out new wine store. Â Great ambiance, great service, great food, great wine.
A++
Boy, I've got mixed feelings about this place. Â The Cave has a great selection of bottled wines with pretty good prices. Â I'll certainly be back for a to-go bottle or two.
It's the sit-down experience that I wonder about. Â Who wants to have their wine served from a machine? I just don't get it. Â But if you do, by all means, fill up your pre-paid wine card and serve yourself!
In fairness, you can purchase bottles and bring them in to the tapas area, and the tapas themselves are very tasty.
Don't expect a great deal of attention from the staff.
Deb & I, along with four friends, went to The Cave Thursday evening to share a few bottles of wine, as well as sample some of their dishes. We visited in years past, but only for bottle/case purchases, so it was nice to get a table and try some of the food.
We all found the atmosphere to be dark & relaxing, perfect for spending time with people you enjoy. The small plates were visually appealing, very tasty, and reasonably priced. I particularly liked the Poke Salad & Filet Mignon plates (see photos).
The only qualm I had was the lack of urgency to get the customers processed. For example, we stood in a dual purpose line (wine purchases & dining room), so it was slow & a bit confusing, so I jumped line, spoke to a staffer, and encouraged him to get it moving. After that, it was smooth sailing.
this place is aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing!!!!
We couldnt find it at first, and then when I saw the sign and pulled up, I couldnt believe it was a wine bar, it looks like it would be a deli or something, smack dab in the middle of industrial Ventura. Now though, i dont even want to write a review for fear my little hidden gem will get too popular. The ambiance is lovely, the wine is reasonable and I love the wine card idea. Oh, and they have gelato! A few different flavors, we got a strawberry cheesecake and chocolate something- it was perfect! A great romantic night, but without all the stuffiness of nice restaurants. Cant wait to come back.
This made for a pretty fantastic date night for my husband and I. Â A little wine haven in the middle of the industrial district of Ventura. Â Wine store in front, wine drinking and food devouring in back. Â
The service is awesome! Â Everyone was so nice and helpful. Â And I loooove using the wine card. Â The food was heavenly....I am a sucker for a good cheese plate. Â I have to order one wherever they are available and always compare them to each other. Â The cheese plate(s) - because you can pick your cheeses - are really good and super reasonable. Â Everything we ate made us very happy. Â I wasn't a huge fan of most of the wines, but can't wait to go back and try some new ones and more cheese please.
This place is literally like finding a dream "Cave" in the middle of nowhere, consisting of  wine and good eats inside of it. So the concept here is something I hadn't experienced before, and was most impressed with.
First off you must follow the walls of wine towards to back of the store to locate this gem. Our server was extremely friendly when we arrived lost and unaware of what we just stumbled on. So you purchase a Wino/boozer card for 5 bucks charge then place whatever frenzy wine going money you want on it. In my opinion it's like a game card but with better winnings at the end = automatic (enomatic) wine serving system fully operable by none other than you, It's amazing I know!
The wine is dispensed from these machines in 1,3,5 oz sizes of varying cost. So hey if your not sure of what wine you are a fan of give them all a small go, and head for the big fiver if there is a bottle that won your heart, mouth, palate over. Again, I have to say this concept is very cool. Your not rushed to gulp down your wine and move on to the next tasting as with some wine tastings, and you have the leisure of saying yay or nay to all that's offered and in any order you want it in.
Aside from there wine, they have a small operating restaurant. We ordered the $5 Small Cheese plate (Choice of 2 cheeses served with bread, walnuts, grapes and apples), $8 Fontina pizza w/ meat, and the chocolate creme brulee (the price I cannot remember it was that good). The cheese plate was just the right size for the two of us, the pizza was amazing loved the sauce, everything was very fresh, and to finish it all off, I admit I'm no chocolate lover, but the chocolate creme brulee was decadent.
This place has a really relaxing vibe and isn't to pricey. Still got money on my card and cant wait to introduce more of my friends to this hidden gem.
For ambiance and location, I still prefer Paradise Pantry, but for prices and ease, The Cave wins. Â This is the kind of place you'd take a larger group - a ton more space than Paradise Pantry, but the food really is amazing in both places. Â The machine dispensed wine tasting sounds like it would "ruin" the wine experience, but for a hands-off, let-me-do-my-own-thing personality, it rocks! Â And the very friendly staff is always available to answer any Qs you may have. Â My only big complaint is that the location is weird.
Food service was pretty slow on a Saturday night, but I'm willing to wait, as they brought out our small plates one by one. Â We split a $5(!!!) cheese plate, eggplant stack (like eggplant parmesan, and a VERY tasty one at that!), both pizzas (which were phenomenal). Â Good selection of high and low wines. Â
I will be back. Â And often.
The CAAAAAVEE! I love this place more than... more than love itself! The servers and cooks are really mellow and friendly, the atmosphere is hip but not too snobby, the music is always good, not to mention the food is always perfect. I love the cheese plate, the pizzas, the blue plates are always good, the chocolate creme brule... oh and the mac n cheese on the last menu had ruffles on it! Bring back the mace n cheese!
Oh yeah and of course the wine is always so good and so cheap! I always pick up a bottle of something I really enjoyed from the wine dispenser thingy... a couple of the good ones are usually under 20 bucks too. What more can you ask for?
I generally eat at The Cave for lunch and have not yet experienced their wine bar and appetizers... which I know sounds very odd since it is 99% wine and 1% food. What can I say, I am not a huge wine fan.
But I can say with certainty that their food is wonderful. I love their homemade potato chips, their sandwiches are delicious and their mushroom soup is to die for.
Did I just walk into some kind of wine utopia? Â Oh hellz yes I did! Â Please please please can I roll in a cot and sleep in The Cave? Â I promise I won't drink...IT ALL!
Srsly though, you walk through a wine store into a back-room they call The Cave, where delicious tapas appetizer-style dishes are served, and surrounding the tables are a couple of computer-controlled wine dispensers, which allow you to purchase samplings of various sizes from a pretty substantial number of whites and reds. Â MmmmmmM!
This is such a great way to learn about and try different wines without breaking the bank. Â It's a fun experience and the food is pretty awesome too. Â They also keep it clean, and the wine dispensers make you feel like you're on the Starship Enterprise asking the Replicator to serve you 3-oz of Malbec.
Must...have...more...
Whenever I'm down in the area, I'm heading back. Â Pronto.
This is one of my favorite little finds in Ventura. I love that you can taste as little or as much wine as you want (plus, the wine dispensers are really fun!), in all different price ranges, and also have some really great food.
The decor is creative: actually decorated like a cave, but a classy one, not a Flintstones one. It's very  intimate and the perfect place to catch up with girlfriends or bring the parents if they're wine lovers too!
