Drinks and appetizers in the cantina or cantina patio are fine, good even, but actually eating a meal, the experience is always just okay; with that said, "just okay" is a not a gross meal. The chips and salsa are great, the atmosphere is comfortable, and the margaritas tasty. I found the kid's taco was pretty good. Although often under-whelmed, the last two times I went I had this male server who came across as being annoyed or as though he was being put off by being our server. It was very weird. I went with different people each time I had him and each time we got to the parking lot afterward we agreed he was awful. So, if you ever get Jake War (name from the receipt) RUN to server next to him!!! He will leave every dirty dish on the table and make you wait for the tab, then make you wait to pay, and then he makes you wait for him to drop it back off.  When I went with a girlfriend, after waiting A HALF AN HOUR to pay, we get outside when she realized she left her boxed food, within those 4 minutes he had already threw it away and wasn't even falsely apologetic. I regret tipping him the 15% both times, now I know.

I went to Chevy's with my bf for happy hour. There was nothing HAPPY about our experience. So, it was packed and we sat at the bar. Servers piled empty margarita/beer glasses on the side of us to the point that we were not sure if there would be space for our food. This mess also caused flies to swarm around us-- highly unsanitary. We had to ask several times for the glasses to be removed from the area. So, we get our food and we're doing alright. This is the kicker: we're almost done with our food and then someone may have shat themselves!!! The stench of feces did it for me--others in the bar area covered their nose while the smell continued to permeate throughout the bar area. Couples began to get boxes. I asked for the check and RAN out. So foul!!!!! Won't return to this filthy location :(

The best chips and salsa!  We never go on Fridays or Saturdays, way too long of a wait.  Food is not advertised as authentic Mexican, so I'm confused why people would think it is.  Food is tex mex average, except fajitas are good.

Got terrible food poisoning here. Spent night in the Emergency Room. Damn near died. Went back to tell them two days later. They didn't give a rip. should have sued them, but didn't. Will NEVER go back. Not clean.

Never been husteled by a waitress until now. Went for happy hour asked specifically how much per drink, waitress said $6. Ordered 2 tacos, by them selves and 2 drinks. Bill came...$39. Must have wanted a larger tip. Not good! We complained. She made it seem like her telling telling us the wrong price was our fault. Beware!! She made happy hour unhappy.

A friend and I went here last night because we heard their drinks were good, after my friend had to get a menu and then wait 20 minutes for someone to come get our orders, the chips and salsa was stale and grose on the bottom. We asked for more chips and salsa 3 three times, once when she came with the food, and two other times.  We honestly would have had more drinks but it took over one hour for one drink and food. It was horrible,  three hours of bad service...go somewhere else I know I won't be back, good drinks or not the long 3 hour wait for 4 drinks, chips and one dinner plate isn't worth it.

You can't expect authentic Mexican food.

I've been eating at this Chevy's for about 10 years now. They have upgraded their manager and upgraded their customer service.

There are always flies looming around.

They make one of the better chili rellenos and a really good fajita salad.

It isn't authentic, but it's a good business lunch location.

The service was bad tonight! We waited 15-25 minutes for drinks! We had one serving of chips and salsa, before our drinks got to us! We asked for more chips,  and our food order came at the same time!   My wife ordered Sizzling Fajitas, and received no sizzle! My Fajita Burrito was good! Overall, Service was all bad! It will be awhile before I go back!

I just don't enjoy the food I have eaten here. I have tried different dishes and they are all "meh"

The only saving grace of this place are the fresh baked tortillas! which they don't have some of the time... not okay.

The tomalito and happy hour margaritas are awesome as well, actually... but those are the only good things I have had... not worth going back on a regular.

I hate writing one star reviews but this place was a mess! Now I remember why it's been so many years since I have been back. The only reason I agreed to go was my wife is big on the Dine and Donate for our school. (her being the president)
I took 25 minutes to seat 5 of us, (told 10- 15 minutes) and there were over 12 empty set tables.
I ordered 2 cheese burgers for the kids.......I know..... Burgers at a mexican restaurant, but that's what they wanted. The 1st cheese burger came 10 minutes after our meals. The cheese burger was luke warm to cold, dried out, and about 1/4 of a slice of cheese.( my 7 year old said "Dad, I wanted a cheese burger") And the 2nd cheese burger came 10 minutes after that one. I am not kidding or exaggerating either! And this bun was hot from the oven, hard and crunchy. While the meat inside was just the same dry, warmish but almost a half slice of cheese.
Both my boys are burger eaters. They love In & Out, in fact they always compare burgers everywhere else and In & Out (still on top for taste and $$$.)
We could not send anything back due to my 11 year old had basketball practice at 8pm. It was now 8pm. And lust got served(1hour and 15 minutes later)
We were sat at 6:45 pm.
I really don't want to get into our meals too much. My mother in law just ordered the tortilla soup, she said it was hot, tastes like broth but not mush more. I ordered  the shrimp fajitas, not much flavor  what so ever, some were hot, some were cold. My wife ordered the chicken fajitas, bland, dry and burnt. We went with fajitas cause the fresh torts are GREAT!! But that will be the only time I would say GREAT out loud at Chevys.
No apologies for the awful service until we were walking out, but by then, it was a bit too late.
Oh, and the never ending chips and salsa??? We asked for seconds twice, never came!!!

it is now 12/11/12...they still haven't contacted me.  Guess they are corporate and
don't care about their real customers!  Disappointing since I have taken so many

This is an update from the last time I went. On Saturday evening, we went to Chevys and had their (3 hat) 3-course special: soup or salad; entree, and dessert.  Again, I ordered their chicken tortilla soup, chicken fajitas, and flan. I ordered Mango lemonade to drink.

Although the food was okay, it wasn't as good as the previous time. The first time was with a soup that was to die for - seriously delicious! I could have ordered a pot of it! Big chunks of avocado and chicken and not too spicy. This time, the soup was a bit too spicy and no big chunks to be seen - mostly tortillas strips. The chicken fajitas on both occasions were the same - very dry. (But the homemade tortillas are so good, you could put wood chips in them and it would taste good.) The flan is delicious. No problems with the dessert either time.

The service has improved enormously over previous years. There are now women servers, so that may have helped. (?)  All in all, even though the food wasn't as good as last time, it was a pleasant experience and was a good deal for $11.99.

Not sure I would go back again any time soon, but you may want to check out their $11.99 special 3 -course dinner while they offer it.

The best Mexican restaurant in Santa Rosa, in my opinion, continues to be El Charro off of Farmer's lane - across from Coco's.  Great food and great prices.

I love Chevy's drinks and their chips and salsa. Their service has improved enormously . . .now if only they could be consistent with the food!

All I can say is stay away from Chevy's! Went to a birthday luncheon here for a friend. Chicken fajitas - meat dry, veges way overcooked, beans and rice awful and guacamole tasted like pure lime juice. Salsa tasted smokey. My daughter had an enchilada and tamale and she couldn't eat hers either! Terrible food! I did not expect authentic Mexican by any means but something edible might have been nice......

It's funny because the food here is not BAD, but really not good. There are so many places in Sonoma County that cost about the same but actually have good food to offer.
The drinks here though are great. Tons of choices and I look forward to the day I get to enjoy one (until then I'll slyly sip my boyfriends...)
I do love the ambience here. Not sure why but chain restaurants while they always have horrible food, always have great ambience. Guess they know they rely on that. It's really nice coming here in the summer with a pair of cute wedges on, a short sundress and a cute boy around your arm.

My wife and I had our first date here about 10 years ago. We used to be regular diners, but over the years we have seen the quality and service decline. We tried again recently with our two sons. First time in over a year. We should have stayed away. Worst service yet. We almost left before anyone, aside from the hostess, greated us. We were at our table for nearly 15 minutes before a server came to take our order. Not good, particularly with 2 hungry boys at the table. When our food arrived, it too was the worst we had ever eaten there. To top it off, my food tasted of dishwashing soap! Almost needless to say, I got a case of "Montezuma's revenge" that had me sick through the next day. We will never return. Makes me wish Sourdough Rebos never left that space...

Change in management. Came in with coupon ($10 off and kids eat free). Gave it to the waiter when we ordered. Kids meals were terrible, but free, so who cares. Nope. They charged us for them and when I questioned it, the waiter says, "We don't do that anymore". Would have been nice to tell me that when I ordered. I doubt we'll be back.

I enjoy happy hour and group get togethers here. The atmosphere is light and airy, the servers have always been pretty spot on. Love love love the salsa, biggest reason why I give them 3 stars. The rest of their food is just average. I've tried pretty much the whole menu and while nothing was bad there were only a few items that are above average. I recommend the crab and shrip enchiladas, they're a little spicy but not too bad just the right amount of heat. The tacos and tamales are just ok, they just don't have that "home made" taste like authentic tamales and tacos do. All in all the place is a great happy hour joint, good drinks, decent apps, but best of all cheap prices!!

I will say there customer service has always been what keeps me coming back. Our office did a fairly large order, there was some miscommunication but the manager on staff was good about pushing the food out as fast as possible and I appreciated that.

ok, Friends were visiting from out of town and we were restricted to walking distance. Im the local so its my job to find food. But I don't spend a lot of time in railroad square... I suggested chevys because in my mind, how can you possibly screw up mexican food in california?

They paid for my dinner so I feel odd complaining about the place but I feel obligated to tell people that if mexican food is on your mind then stay far far away from this place. I think my school cafeteria in pennsylvania did a better job on taco days.

I don't really know how to classify the food. the enchilada sauce was like catsup with melted packaged cheese. I think it was prison food.

anyway, I'm sorry but this place only gets one star from me because I will never go back, I was embarrassed I suggested it in the first place, and I really could never in good conscience tell anyone to go here for anything other than booze. did I mention it was avg about $14 a plate? yea... ok... you can go to half a dozen authentic mexican places in santa rosa and get amazing food for $6 and you won't leave those places as hungry as I left chevy's.

    *end rant*

I pretty much only come here for the Dos Patrones, which I like to drink at least 4 of before stopping to take a breath or talking.

Super yummy, and very potent. Who needs dinner? Not me! Keep 'em coming!

On the other side of the coin, completely Olive Garden-style "Tex-Mex" Mexican food (and you know what I feel about OG).
Overpriced, for something I could get at Taqueria Santa Rosa for half the price. Food quality is iffy, and the recipes, even though they are newly noted all over the menus " NEW RECIPES!", still don't do anything for me.

Also, for a celiac, corn tortilla chips that have wheat in them??? SO FRUSTRATING.  Nothing designated on the menu for food allergies, and if you try to talk to the wait staff about it, they have no idea what gluten is, and half the time think it's some type of meat product. "Does this Deep Fried Tortilla Cheese Cholesterol Roll up have gluten in it?" "Ummmm...it comes with an option of Overcooked Flavorless Chicken, Dehydrated Beef, or Puny Chewy Shrimp". Awesome! I'll take schfifty-five!

This review is for one experience.  I eat at Chevy's all over, and at this one half a dozen times until I went there for a large birthday party group.

The waiter split our group into three, and our mini group of 8 people all put cash into the bill fold.  We saw each other put in cash and knew how much was in there.  He came back 10 minutes later and said we were short.  We said that wasn't possible and I am pretty sure he either got a 20 in another mini groups pile or pocketed it.  We called the manager over who, instead of taking charge, allowed the waiter to do all the talking and called us liars.

Now, I own a small business, which this is not, and sometimes you have to eat a small amount to keep a customer happy.  It sucks, but it happens.  This was a table of nearly 30 customers, all of whom were listening to a waiter call us liars and a manager unwilling to swallow $20 to keep a table that just spent over $500 (pre-tip) at his restaurant happy.  It was beyond bad business and poor management to boot.  I've never been back, and neither has anyone in our group and Chevy's corporate ignored my emails.

Boy this place can't get it right. Went here a few days ago. Found out el michineo is no more. So the tortillas are crap now. All stuck together. The food is just nasty. Meat is mainly fat no meat. Not the first time. This is normal now.

Don't waste your time. If I could give a 0 rating. Go to chuys they are better.

For the past few weeks I have been going to this Chevys for dinner on Friday nights. The service is always great and so is the food. You'd expect to wait a while on Friday nights but we never had too. Recently, we went on a Tuesday and they were very busy (you wouldn't expect that on a Tuesday). The service was still great. The food wasn't the best that night so we didn't really eat. The manager checked on us and when we told him it wasn't that great it took it off and we just paid for our drinks. We weren't even going to say anything and they offered.

They give a military discount here and with as much as we eat here the food that wasn't that great was 'free' any way.

But, I think it is great that they offer a military discount. That's one of the things that keeps us going back.

I went tonight, a Friday.  Probably a terrible night.  I say it's pretty bad.

First, the parking lot was full and all surrounding areas were also full.  For some reason, this Chevys is quite popular...  Second, the service was *SLOW*.  And I mean really really slow.  From the first step, of asking for your drink order to getting your bill.  Slow as a snail.  I think it took more than 10 minutes to get the check after the waiter gave us the boxes for the leftovers.  All the tables were full in the main area so you think the waiter would hurry it up with the check so they could get more people in.  The only thing fast was the person who comes and refills your chips and salsa.  Not even the water person.

Overall, the food is good and what I expected from Chevys.  This time I didn't get the rubber tasting salsa.

I like Chevy's I know I know it is a chain and I'm not supposed to like it but it serves its purpose. Pretty good food, cheap, quick and all those chips and salsa! My recent visit did feel a little less friendly...I was in the bar for lunch alone just having a light bite to eat (corn chowder) and the bartender really wasn't having it. He barely mumbled 3 words to me and just looked at me as though I was a pain in his asssss. I know that my order was small but so was my table and the place wasn't exactly packed.

Again overall I keep coming back because after all it does serve its purpose.

I'd give this place two stars, but I'm throwing in an extra star for being open on Christmas Day and the bartender having a heavier hand on the tequila than normal (probably felt bad people were actually drinking on Christmas Day at Chevy's?)

I normally don't go to Chevy's unless it's happy hour. It's just not worth it.

This Chevy's is no exception to the mediocrity that is Chevy's.

    Happy hour is bomb though!

I would like to say I'm chillin at Chevy's but I have to say I'm chilled by my Chevy's experience.  I haven't been for a while, but I do remember that Chevy's always promoted itself as "no cans in the kitchen" everything FRESH...well, fresh and well prepared are perhaps, different things.  In this case, they were certainly different things.  And not a few of my favorite things.

The chips were thin and greasy. The salsa? No more than some pureed tomatoes...I thought I would do one of the combo lunches (since one of my first remembrances of their menu, Chili Rellenos was no longer on their menu, or if it was I didn't see it); so I had a Chopped Salad and Tortilla Soup Combo ($8.99) ...can we say TASTELESS and the soup was lukewarm, at best. And the chicken in both was tough and dry.  Dry chicken in soup?  How is that even possible? I asked about the wine list...ummmmm, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab Sauv..."Who makes it" I asked...dunno...WE live in Sonoma...WE have wine here...find it!  Anyway...I guess they are all about Margaritas and not local beers.

So LindySez...unless you want tasteless, uninspired and I don't think "fresh" food...go someplace else...really.

PS For the rest of the survey on YELP...I'm going to say...who cares if they take credit card?

Why God? Why do I get suckered into work lunches at such crap holes. The people I work with think that going to a place like this is GREAT! UUUUHHK! There has got to be a better local Mexican food restaurant that has better prices and better food. This isn't even Mexican food.

I have three words to say "Canned Enchilada Sauce." If there is one thing I can not stand its canned enchilada sauces. Its disgusting, horrid and insulting to a food that is so delicious. If a restaurant uses canned enchilada sauce they cant call them enchiladas anymore. They need to make up a new name for them because its a disgrace I tell you.

I have eaten here for more birthday parties than I can count. BUT, I will NEVER eat here again. Why you ask? Sit down and let me tell you.

I went for a lunch here with a girlfriend a while ago and ordered some kind of chimichanga roll thing where it was little versions of it and there was like 4 on the plate, artfully displayed.

I ate one and was looking at the others to pick the next one when I found a fly embedded into the drizzled sauce on one of the rolls. YUCK!

Both of us immediately stopped eating and waited for the check. When the waiter came by I showed him my little addition to my plate and he called over the manager. The manager tried to offer us both new plates and we politely declined just asking for the check. He comped our meals and gave me a $50 gift card which I quickly gave to someone who didn't seem to mind that there was a fly in the squeeze bottle that held that special sauce.

Never again will I go here since that experience. I realize that accidents happen but they can now happen to someone else.

Don't even think about eating the junk food this place tries to pass off as "FreshMex." I wish this Chevy's would be replaced by a good club, bar, or non-white bread restaurant.

This isn't a bad place to go for a few margaritas once in a while and for that, I give two stars.

I went here with a few of my Car buddies and was very pleased with the service and the food. Compared to all the Chevy's resturants in the bay area I have visited this one is located in a nice historic part of town in Santa Rosa.

I ordered a Appetizer combo and everything came out hot and fresh.
The sour cream, tomatoes, salsa, and lettuce all came out fresh and cold. Very pleased.

    Main Entre,
Fajita Steak plate was Equally good. The meat was cooked perfectly. Browned and seared on the outside and rare in the middle.
I always love the sweet cornmeal with little bits of corn.

Seating was very easy on a saturday during lunch time.My coke was never empty for more than 1 minute and I got all the Chips and Salsa I wanted without having to ask for more!!

I only came here because I brought one of the guys from my work here for his outing.  I typically do not like Chevy's, only really did as a kid because of the tortillas...otherwise I think the food is shitty.

I will say though that this restaurant has the best service of any that I've been to in a while.  Attentive staff. the man I work with is autistic/retarded so he has a tendency to stare a lot.  He also sneers most of the time so if you don't know that he is autistic you get the impression that something is the matter with him...we were asked if we needed anything else, by several staff members while we were there.  Granted we did not need anything but I really like that they checked.  The server, the food runner, the bus boys, the hostess...

refreshing to have a nice staff at a restaurant, seems to be a luxury around here...too bad I hate their food.

For 10 years all I've ever ordered from Chevy's were the flautas. They were a no fail no disappointment tex mex meal for me. I've seen the presentation of the flautas evolve and the quality of Chevy's food spiral. The flautas no longer arrive with jalapeno jelly and the rice is kinda -eh. I remembered the old ad campaigns of "fajitas so hot you can date em" when I saw that they now have a new fajita on the menu- steak fajitas with chimichurri sauce. I got really excited. Maybe they would taste like the steak at Bongos in Orlando (see review).

Let me just warn you that the service here is extremely slow. So slow that we downed 2 trays of chips and salsa (not because we're pigs and they must have crack in em because they are addicting, but because the service is so slow and the the chips are so much more appetizing than gnawing on a paper napkin). I got my fajitas and they were okay. Just okay. Not great. Not even good that I would order them again. They were just okay enough for me to be filled up for lunch.

I think I won't be returning to Chevy's ever again. Good bye Chevy's. I'm driving away and never looking back. I'm headed towards La Pinata now.

It's a hot time in the summer here.  The outside balcony is open and the side curtains are up, so the breezes flow through.  Inside the high ceilings, skylights and fans let you feel like you're still outside.  There's a bar that looks like it would be raucous after dark.

A chopped salad, two crispy tacos with rice & beans, iced tea and Diet Pepsi cost us $27 + tip.  The servers made sure we had plenty of chips, and the salsa was fresh.

The bathrooms seemed like genuine Mexico City, though.  I would appreciate a little less authenticity in that department.

This is not the worst Chevy's in the chain, but it still is resolutely mediocre. Starchy pasty food, almost alcohol-free margarita's that require you buy a shot or 2 of tequila to make them semi-authentic.

This Chevy's has been here for 15 years or so.  Santa Rosa's Railroad Square still struggles for economic viability.  Good restaurants on this block have come and gone. Other mediocre one's like La Gare remain because they were established when real estate prices were still low. Add to that fact that most Anglo Santa Rosa residents have never tasted real Tex-Mex food, even though the town is 35% Hispanic. Before Chevy's arrived the "HOT" super-busy Mexican restaurant in Santa Rosa was Acapulco & their food was the absolute worst!  Acapulco closed years ago and the building is still vacant, even though it's on a busy downtown street.

If you need a Mexican food fix in Santa Rosa go to:  Pepe's, La Bufa, El Patio or Lola's market. Those places serve authentic, good tasting meals for low prices.

I didn't eat here.  I just got a margarita.  I am giving the second star not because it was good (I mean, it may have been - I am not a drinker and really have no idea what a good margarita tastes like), but because it was huge.

I don't know how it happened, but I think the waiter asked me if I wanted it "grande" and I said yes, thinking he asked me if I wanted it blended.

It was as big as my head - no - as big as my friend Tanya's head.  Which is big by any standard.

I finished it.  I was sick, could hardly walk and had to go lay down in my hotel room before moving on to dinner, but I've never been one to waste stuff.

1 star for being the only restaurant open in Santa Rosa on a Sunday afternoon
1 star for having cool architecture
1 star for serving their food while it's still hot
1 star for giving my boyfriend some extra tortillas to go
Minus 1 star for having a bathroom that needed attention while having plenty of employees milling about doing nothing a mere 10 feet away.

restaurant that I've been to. The
food is far better than say the Del

Loss of a star due to over Corporate

I first visited this Chevys in 1997 when it was only the 10th Chevys I'd visited. Making the big double digits at Santa Rosa spurred me on to try to go to every Chevys I could. I ate here again on a day trip to the Santa Rosa ice rink and Charles Schultz museum.

This Chevys has one of the best locations ever - it's inside a former railroad station. There's also an actual energy about the place that's exciting (or maybe it's just all the people eating there that mean there will be a wait and parking will be difficult).

The salsa tasted brown though it was red, and the boyfriend was happy that there were no evil spicy bits. The Happy Birthday song was loud, but didn't seem sincere since the servers left as soon as it was over.
