Figured I would give this place a try after driving by it so many times.
The food was OK. Just have to focus on grabbing things right away as they come out of the kitchen. This place suffers the curse of all low-traffic buffet places.... the food gets cold because there aren't that many customers.... and there aren't that many customers because they don't put fresh food out... so it tends to be cold and flaccid.
The most entertaining thing about this place has got to be the people. We were lucky enough to be seated next to some gentlemen with long beautiful grey ponytails & tie-dyed attire/headbands who spent their time complaining long and loud about the "Beavis & Butthead generation". I didn't have the heart to tell them "the kids" haven't watched that show in 20 or so years.... nor that their crystal deodorant had stopped working and we were slowly dying from the stench.
Better still, some people were deeply offended that they had made the special trip all the way from their farm to the big city to go to China House, only to find that there were no "crab legs" available this particular evening. Like it's the wait staffs fault or something? Geeze people, lighten up.
Wednesday night is "kids nights" and Sunday is the day for "seniors" apparently.
An ordinary buffet, don't know what to say. A small tip: it is not a good idea to go there on Sunday night. Since they are closed on Mondays, it seems they do not want to make too much things the day before. So on Sunday night the quantity of the food is small and apparently they do not want to add more even if the food box is almost empty.
Review Source:Visited for the first time after getting advertisement about a new chef. The lunch buffet was the best we've had in Indiana. Usually I stay away from chicken dishes but the presentation of all the dishes was so nice (smaller portions which didn't leave food swimming in sauce, for example) that I tried the teriyaki chicken, pepper chicken and orange chicken (that had whole mushrooms with it-that was new AND yummy) all if which were very good! The sushi was also good, a rarity at buffets. Ambience is nice and restrooms are clean. Service is good but the buffet was really exceptional!
Review Source:It's hard to decide whether to give them a 3 star or 4 star as I would visit them whenever I have a craving for crab legs. And I used to come here often with a bunch of my Asian friends after basketball games and left here feeling fulfilled.
The interior is a bit dark and traditional looking compared to the new Hibachi in town, which has a modern, cleanlier, comfortable looking. But I'd say you can find china house coupons in the mail and if you are a student, make sure you bring your student ID with you, you get a free drink with an ID when you check out.
Alright, I'm a fan for the crab legs.
There are two Chinese Buffets that I'm aware of on the west side of town. One has decent food, but questionable cleanliness and a less than happy staff. This place has pretty good food, but I tend to not eat the heavily ethnic stuff. I stick with sweet and sour chicken and other innocuous stuff. All in all, I'm always happy, but I don't ask for much. I was a little worried on this visit, as the chicken on a stick, which I normally love, wasn't as hot as it should have been, which  had me wondering if it was cooked thoroughly.
For the price, it's good. not great, but good. My wife is pickier than I am, and she likes it, so that works for me.
Once I went here at some mystical hour when everything was fresh and tasted relatively good and I've visited several times since in the hope that said experience wasn't a hallucination, to no avail. Every visit since has been disappointing, a feat particularly hard to achieve considering my expectations for buffet-style anything are pretty damned low.
The handful of times I've been here, anything fried is lukewarm on the outside and less warm on the inside. There are lots of strange things on the buffet, like the Coconut Shrimp, which tastes like fried shrimp covered in a combination of mayonnaise and Marshmallow Fluff. The fried rice sits in a steamed rice cooker: aka it doesn't taste fried. Even the desserts, which look delicious, have some weird-ass licoracey aftertaste.
The only things served here that haven't offended my senses in some way are the soft-serve ice cream and the fortune cookies, and I certainly don't need to pay upwards of $15 for that anywhere.
It's not as though I have some ridiculously high standard for generic midwestern Chinese food. Â You go when you need your grease/MSG fix and can expect that on account of those two ingredients, it's going to taste pretty good. Â But WOW, this place is spectacularly horrible. Â Apparently "ma po tofu" = cubed, uncooked soft tofu with frozen peas and carrots in some canned gravy. Â The worst transgression of all: they ruined crab rangoon for me! How is it possible for something so bad for you to taste so bad? Â It is a crime against America. Â China House? More like Depression House. Â
I did see some bros with sweet mullets in here. Â The highlight of my meal.
