My sister just picked my family up some dinner here, and I ordered the chicken egg foo young. TERRIBLE. The whole thing completely dissolved in a grainy mess, and the texture was grainy and mealy. I tried one single bite and shoved it away, I'll find something else for dinner and will NEVER eat here again. Ew ew ew. I'll stick to Shanghai Charlie's, which is MUCH better.
Review Source:I've read these other reviews and I just don't get it. Â My wife and I ordered the egg foo young for a take out dinner last night. Â We also got the pu pu platter. Â The platter was alright, but they served the egg foo young without gravy. Â How do you do that? Â There was nothing but the patty and a heap of vegetables laying on top. Â It was awful. Â I called the restaurant and I was told that the gravy was at the bottom and I should have asked for EXTRA gravy. Â Again, there was no gravy...it sucked.
Review Source:The Crystal Shrimp plate was delicious. Â Large portions so we had enough leftovers for dinner (for 3) the next evening. Â The staff is very attentive and came by our table several times to make sure we were comfortable. Â The gentleman bussing our dishes was very polished and reserved. Â The waiter was all smiles and very nice! Â Yummy Chinese food, great staff, clean restaurant. Overall very satisfied!
Review Source:I'm from New York, so all of my reviews are biased since i'm used to east coast food, but I really don't think this place is anything special. I also have yet to try any other chinese place in the OC, so there's nothing to compare it to around here.
I ordered the General Tso's chicken, which for some reason, no chinese food restaurant can ever make it to the spice level that I am expecting. When you place a red chili next to it, i'm expecting some spice, but this dish had none. The chicken honestly had the texture of tofu and the sauce was not flavorful. However, their cream cheese wontons are fantastic!! I would only go back for those.
I was getting really tired driving, and had pulled into this parking lot. Â Looking around for something to eat and take a break, it was dinner time at 6pm, I saw China Well. Â So I decided to try the restaurant. Â
I was seated at a booth, and the menu and water came quickly. Â While I perused the menu, there were many phone orders for takeout. Â I got beef with asparagus. Â When it came, it was done really well, and the asparagus was crispy and the beef tender and tasty. Â Not mind blowing, but really well made. Â It's more than decent. Â Service was nice, they came by a couple of times to see if I needed anything. Â
If I'm in the area, I'll come again here for a meal.
Ol' reliable, we've been coming here for years. Good food and service, though we usually get takeout. You can always count on enough to feed the family and decent quality food and  a correct order sheeeee's!
Prices a reasonable for the amount of food they give you and my wife really likes the Moo-sho pork. I usually try and mix it up and have never been disappointed. For a town without decent Asian cuisine it does the trick.
My wife and I ate here on a Sunday afternoon when virtually no one was in the restaurant. Â The service was ok - my water glass ended up empty more than it stayed full, and my wife had to ask for refills on her drink, but otherwise it was fine. Â We ordered the Boston Egg Rolls and they we just big, normal egg rolls - kinda disappointing. Â We also ordered shrimp fried rice and combination lo mien. Â The rice was clean and fresh, but there weren't that many pieces of shrimp - I felt disappointed because the shrimp was pretty good. Â The lo mien was ok, Â There was no distinction of flavors - it all kinda blended in together. Â The meats were tasty, but again not very generous. Â Overall the two dishes tasted much like one another - the primary difference being the textures. Â One appetizer, two dishes and one drink for thirty bucks. Â It was ok, but not enough for us to go back. Â It's an "also ran" type of place, not a standout.
Review Source:I love their lunch specials. Â For a buck more than fast food you get real restaurant quality. Â I like the chicken and vegetable lunch medium spicy. Â The chicken is done tender and moist, which I am picky about. Â I think they have been reading Yelp, the customer service has gotten friendlier, and they always go over your order if you do a take out to make sure the order is correct.
Review Source:They serve dim sum daily, which is a fantastic treat for those of us living at the very southern end of OC away from the dim sum mecca of Westminster. Â The dim sum variety is pretty decent, offering shumai, har gow, and my fave pork spareribs in a black bean sauce.
The rest of the menu is pretty basic and very Americanized, a bit on the bland side, but nothing that a little soy sauce can't jazz up. Â
The decor is very 80s, but the service is great.
China Well serves decent food in a very cozy and quiet atmosphere.
The wait staff is hyper attentive and the place is spotless. The shrimp in lobster sauce is always good, and you can't go wrong with a pupu platter (he said pupu!)...so immature.
Easily the best chinese food in San Clemente.
I really wanted to like this restaurant. Â There are very, very few quality Chinese restaurants in the Dana Point / San Clemente / San Juan Capistrano area, which is tough for someone like me who was spoiled with fantastic Chinese food for many years in San Francisco and Oakland.
When I entered, the ambience was decent and the service was very friendly.
But then I noticed the muzak, which was painful enough to violate the Geneva Convention. Â
Not even my dentist subjects me to that level of saxophone smooth jazz torture. Â Why does anybody need to record instrumental Safeway versions of songs like Patsy Cline's "Crazy" and Lionel Richie's "Hello", which are already soft as can be? Â I realize that few other people would care about this. Â But any restaurant staff that is subjected to that music day in and day out must have either dull senses or a hatred for humanity. Â
Indeed, the food was nothing special. Â I've had better sesame chicken from the frozen food section of Costco. Â The noodle dish had a tasty sauce, but the meat medley looked like what one would expect from Panda Express towards the end of the night.
I would love to be wrong. Â Maybe I ordered the wrong dishes. Â
I might try the weekend dim sum, if only because there are no decent dim sum options in the OC, south of Mission Viejo. Â If my opinion changes, I will certainly amend this.
If the owner of the China Well Restaurant ever reads this, please contact me when you change the music and cooks.
Every Christmas Eve we eat Chinese food. China Well was the lucky place this year.
We had the Sizzling Rice Soup, Vegetable Egg Foo Young, Vegetable Chow Mein and a house chicken special. The Egg Foo Young was good, but the rest sub par. Should have gone with the Egg Flower Soup, which I recall being yummy here.
My husband really, really likes China Well. The place got quite busy - even on Christmas Eve - so others must, too. I did overhear a couple behind us say the New Mandarin Garden restaurant was much better. Guess I know where we're going next Christmas Eve!
Good friendly service but the food was just average overall. Â The fried rice is tasty and the Orange Chicken is good. Â Everything else is just okay but nothing special. Â
It is hard to find really great Chinese food in South OC -- mostly just over-priced, trendy chains like PF Changs. Â
Perhaps I've been spoiled from my days in SF for where my office was a few blocks from Chinatown.
The Egg Flower Soup here is the best effin soup ever! Â It's filled with egg and vegetables so fresh that there's still a crunch to 'em, and they don't skimp on the chunkiness either. Â Tastes so good and healthy - is that even possible?? Â
Oh and the Sesame Chicken - another stellar choice! Â Not sure how sick you have to be to think that these flattened pieces are chicken skin, but it's all meat baby. Â All meat and all delish. Â
Everything from the service to the semi-romantic ambience is perfect. Â This place gives new meaning to chinese food once considered quick and bad for you. Â An hour later, you won't be hungry.
I would give China Well 10 stars, but i seem to be 5 short. Â Let me just say that the sesame fried chicken is some of the best around. Â It is tenderized into flat pieces then flash fried. Â The best dish on the menu would have to be the Orange Chicken cooked with dried orange peel. Â Worth the 10 dollars for that plate. Â Otherwise, on the specials menu, nobody could go wrong with the 3 ingredients plate. Â This comes with a salad, soup, and 2 fried wontons with your meal for a whoppin 7 bucks. Â And my last addition to my favorites at "the well" would be the egg flower soup. Â Probably my favorite egg drop soup ive ever had. Â China Well is a proud sponsor of TEAM AWESOME!!
