Stopped in for a snack and tried the fried oysters and shrimp basket. The oysters were wonderful and the shrimp were just ok. They have an interesting selection of beers on tap. The decor takes you on a time travel back into the 20th century - old fashioned booths, saloon doors and lots of anitquey paraphernalia on the walls. It was a beautiful day and we missed not sitting out over the water but that wasn't an option at Clawson's - for future reference. Cute and interesting but nothing out of this world.
Review Source:Our family has been coming to Clawson's for years. This year seems to be the best ever!. The menu has been slightly revamped and it seems the portions are larger and the options increased. We went with a family of 7 including  a small child and grandparent and all of use were very satisfied. Wide variety of items on the menu from sandwiches to entrees. Great selection of beers with specials everyday.. While in Beaufort you should definitely try Clawson's.....
Review Source:Good service and cool atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and pitched in about what was delicious to order. We got $5 bbq shrimp, which was the special that night. It was different but very good. The shackleford scallops were ok. Expected a bit more crust and the sauce was a little watery. The shrimp and grits were good..on the spicy side. The grits could have used a bit more cheese, but the bacon was great. The garlic mashed potatoes are definitely delicious. The montery grilled chicken was delicious and cooked perfectly. The salad it was on was very fresh and light. I think it could have used a bit more dressing. We passed the bar area to sit upstairs and it looked really fun. The decor was old timeish and it was neat to look at all the different items. I liked the plaque on the stairs stating how much eggs used to be back in the day. My favorite is right by the front door where they have an old teller window as a wall divider. All in all a good experience
Review Source:We had the pleasure of going to Clawson's a few weekends ago when my wife and I visited her sister. Â My sister n law's husband is a true local, and it was cool to sit in there and have everyone come in and say hi and meeet us. Â If we lived in the area I could see myself in here several nights a week.
Review Source:I've been to Clawson's twice and they never fail to please. Â Everyone agrees that the shrimp and grits are the best. Â The waitress on my last trip there was enthusiastic, energetic, polite and well versed about the menu and specials. Â I should also add she looked and smelled like she lived in a house with indoor plumbing and had showered that day. Â She was definitely a breath of fresh air in a restaurant world filled with grungy looking kids that do not make enough in tips to buy soap or a comb. Â But I digress, seafood is a good choice at Clawsons and the Mahi with crab meat special is great. Â The food comes out fast, hot and fresh. Â Almost forgot, great beer selection with some real nice options on Carolina brews.
Review Source:Arriving late to our room(9:45 pm)...hungry and soaked from the down pour outside. Looking through list of restaurants, trying to find one that is open late. 9 pm, 9:30 pm then 10:00pm! Clawson's open till 10 pm. OMG IT'S 9:47 pm! Will they still take our order? Or better yet...TAKEOUT?! YES!!! Thank you CLAWSON's for the yummy calamari and for the club croissant. You guys made our miserable night awesome!
Review Source:My sister brought me here for lunch this summer. Â She raved about the seafood bisque which she has each time she eats here. Â I wasn't interested until I tried a spoonful of hers. Â It was delicious! Â I immediately had to add it to my order. Â I had the fried shrimp basket with the broccoli salad . Â Shrimp was bland and a bit chewy, broccoli salad had too much mayo and not enough crunch. Â What saved the meal was the bisque. Â Rich with chunks of seafood, a very satisfying flavorful soup. Â
Our server was very attentive and had a lot of knowledge on the history of Clawson's, which was very interesting. Â Lots of charm & character in this historic Restaurant.
Beaufort is beautiful, but seriously lacking great dining. I came here for lunch with my sister and two children. The food was satisfactory. Â My sister did love the seafood chowder.
I will say they had excellent ranch dressing. Â What a plus! Â We split a burger and one of those potatoes nobody can pronounce. The actual burger needed seasoning, but the bacon was excellent and bbq sauce divine. Â
The vegetarian potato was pretty bland. All in all, I may eat here again, but not before trying some other places first.
I took a friend here for her birthday lunch this week. We are not out of town-ers. We are LOCALS who love ALL FISH ,SHRIMP,SCALLOP,OYSTERs....all types of fish foods so we know whats good and whats not. More importantly whats FRESH and whats not. Clawson's has been here since 1905. For a restaurant to stick around that long, they must be doing something right.
I read all the different reviews other YELPERS wrote on Clawsons, but I didn't hear to many tout the Sea Food Bisque. It has shrimp and scallops. It is THE BEST you will find around this area. They are not chinsey on the meat portions either. You will get large chunks of succulent scallops and big chunks of shrimp.Fresh and just the right amount of sweet with a nice lemony tangy sherry cream base. Its so popular they sell it by the pint and the quart.
We mentioned the fact we were there for a birthday lunch and our waitress brought out a HUGE complimentary Mud Pie for my friend which was very decadent and enough to feed three people! We live close by so she was able to take it home with her with out it melting to much.
We love eating here, but they do have a few things I'd like to see changed . But nothing earth shattering....
1. when you order a Fried Shrimp or Oyster  Basket, give it to us on a plate so we don't need to eat out of the cramped basket.
2.. The bathrooms smell musty and their small.
If I'm in the area shopping I'd go in there just to get some soup to take home with me! Try it next time your down on the water.
Very nice lunch here while tied up at Beaufort Docks across the street. Mexican rice special was very good. I've eaten here before on my way through Beaufort and have been generally pleased. I will certainly eat here at least once each visit. They aren't very accommodating to special needs - I had a crew member who was unwell on a previous trip and they couldn't manage a bowl of chicken broth. If it isn't on the menu they can't seem to help. Special circumstances aside, the food is reliably good and the service warm and friendly.
Review Source:I like Clawsons 1905 Restaurant. Â Not so much for the food, but for the history of the building and the local people involved in this restaurant are great. Â Every night Clawsons has beer & bar food specials. Â I have noticed that the menu has been pared down from what it was a few years ago. Â Maybe to save on expenses or to help the kitchen put out quality food. Â Clawsons does serve sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, burgers, crab cakes, steaks, ribs, pasta and several seafood dishes worth trying. Â I really like the hot crab dip served with flatbread. Â I can't say anything about their steaks, but I have had the garlic grilled shrimp served with coconut jasmine rice. Wow. Â And not a bad price. Â I do like that this restaurant is locally owned and operated and serve fresh seafood harvested from local fisherman. Â I want to go back soon. Â The only tvs are in the bar area which is limited space and small tables and the bar staff won't come to your table but every 10 minuets. Â If you are seated in the restaurant area the staff is more attentive.

Was recommended by the dive shop and I was hungry. Place was slammed bit the staff was very friendly.
$2.50 drafts on Thursday night so I lucked out.
Ordered the tuna ap and the fried oysters.
I'm an oyster fanatic. Â Raw, fried...you name it. The fried oysters were the best I've ever had. Anywhere. Ever. Per-fricken-fect. Â
Tender, juicy and superbly breaded. There were 13 in the serving (for under $10). Â
The tuna was also very good with a nice drizzle of a couple of different sauces. The seaweed slaw underneath was awesome. I could have eaten a bowl of it by itself, it was that good.
I'll have to come back and order an entree! Â And I will be back.

Found myself in Beaufort, NC...cute little waterfront. We stood outside looking at this place and some customers leaving told us to go in and try the special. In the fall on Tuesdays they have spicy shrimp and grits for $10 with greens and freshly baked rolls. Fantastic, great flavor, creamy grits and bacon and shrimp...practically licked the plate.
Review Source:I went here on Saturday night with my husband. We went around 7 and there was no wait. Our waitress was friendly, and we got a $9 pitcher of beer! Awesome. Also, we both loved the broccoli salad (a side) that my husband ordered.
However, we were a bit disappointed in the food. My husband ordered the surf & turf burger (hamburger with about 6 fried shrimp on top). I ordered the garlic grilled shrimp with mango salsa and jasmine rice. As the food runner brought the plates out, she dropped 2 (of only 6) of the shrimp off my husband's plate onto the floor. So that's about a third of the shrimp he ordered. She kind of chuckled and said, "Oops! Give him some of your shrimp." Surely she was going to go back to the kitchen and bring some replacement shrimp for him...? Nope, never happened. He said his burger was nothing special. I liked my grilled shrimp and jasmine rice, but the mangoes in the salsa had a bit too much of a gelatinous texture to them.
We ordered the mud pie for dessert. It was good, except it didn't have any nuts on it. Did they drop all of them on the floor, too?
We might go back in the future, based on the location and $9 pitchers on Saturday nights. However, it wasn't the experience I'd hoped it would be.
Clawson's is another one of those typical American restaurants that offer just about everything, including steaks, burgers, seafood, pasta, etc.
The decor was interesting as the walls were plastered with ads and companies from the 1800 and 1900's. Â Made me wondered if these were real or fictional as I didn't recognize any of them except Vick's and a couple others.
Food-wise, nothing there that really stands out...except their carrot cake. Â Now, that was a little slice of heaven!
One of Beaufort's staple restaurants, we visit it each time we come to the area.
Every Friday is NC Beer night: NC beers are $2! LOVE THAT, and LOVE supporting NC beers!
I'm not a seafood eater so I have had almost everything on the menu. Some of the apps can be a little too much like typical bar food for me but I have never had an entree that I didn't love. A unique menu item are the dirigibles- stuffed potatoes: your choice of original, veggie, or seafood! These are comfort food at it's best!
Love the decor! It's in an old building on the waterfront, feels like the building is 100 years old with exposed brick and old wood. The only complaint I have, which isn't the restaurant's fault, is that everytime we are there, there is a screaming kid and even louder mother trying to calm the kid down. Loud noises are even louder in this building so it can sort of damper an evening until you start praying the fam is done with their meal before you are!
I found the decor to be a bit too perfect and preserved, kinda "Cracker Barrel-esque", but the location along the waterfront in a cute downtown full of great old houses is nice. Prices a little on the high side. The service was a bit slow, and the space felt cavernous. But...
I swear I have never had fried oysters like that in my life. I don't know what they do to them--until I had these, I never understood why anyone liked fried oysters. They are usually just crunchy breading with a teeny piece of rubber on them, but these... these were thick and oyster-y, with a delicate buttery layer of breadcrumbs. Just fantastic!
So, otherwise, based on everything else mentioned above, and also the workman-like fried shrimp my partner had, I would say two stars. But the oysters--make it three stars!
Wow, I guess it's been eight or ten years since we've been to Clawson's. Â It was one of our favorite restaurants when we lived near the beach. Â I really wanted to give it four or five starts but am probably being generous at three.
They have done a great job restoring an old building. Â The brick walls, tin ceilings and the rough hewn wood make for a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Â
They have a small but nice selection of draft beers with three or four seasonal brews rotating into the lineup.
We started with the hand cut, house made onion rings. Â Perfectly cooked, they were every bit as good as I remembered. Â
I had the fish wrap (their take on a fish taco.) Â The wrap had a nice piece of Mahi, lettuce, tomato, black bean and corn salsa, in a old bay seasoned wrap. Â It was just ok. Â The wrap was too heavy for the fish, the fish was pretty dry and the flavor of the black beans completely overpowered the other ingredients.
My wife had the shrimp salad wrap. Â It was ok but, the shrimp were pretty bland. Â I'm not certain but would bet that they were frozen.
The service was shaky. Â After we finished our meal, we waited 15 minutes before I asked the host to try and find our waitress. Â When she did appear, she didn't acknowledge that she had disappeared, didn't apologize for leaving us waiting, and didn't even attempt to clear the dishes from our table. Â She simply presented the check. Â Needless to say, I was pretty annoyed.
I'm not sure if we'll go back but, it we do, we'll pass on the wraps and try the burgers.
Clawson's is across the water and presents a cheaper dinner/lunch option. The food is good, but not spectacular. Service is fine - Clawson's occasionally has live music or concerts, which is a great option. They are more family friendly than some of the other fancier places, and serves you a good meal at a medium price. Try their Shrimp & Grits for a real southern style heart attack! A real nice plus for Clawson's is that they often stay open during the slow winter months while other places close for their vacation.
Review Source:Three out of five people at our dinner last night ordered ribs. Â Very good. Â Tender, light on the sauce. Â One also had shrimp and grits, said they were good. Â The burger ordered was overcooked, but didn't seem like a deal breaker. Â Also, of note, the Ranch dressing is the extra-tasty kind, not the regular Hidden Valley kind.
It's a nice enough place for a small town offering.
Conveniently located, but kind of uninteresting entrees. Â Having said that, I seriously considered ordering 6 different starters. Â The appetizer menu looked way more interesting.
Pros:
- Convenient location
- Seafood bisque
- Decent local beer selection
Cons:
- Spotty service
- Better places for fried seafood.
- Children's mac & cheese was sub-Kraft
Shrimp, shrimp, shrimp. Clawson's knows how to serve it up in a variety of ways. They have perfected the art of shrimp in the more than 100 years the place has been in operation.
My shrimp wrap chock full of HUGE shrimp. My husband's shrimp quesadilla was the same; full of huge shrimp nestled amongst melted cheese.
The sweet tea was flowing, which made me one happy lady.
If you're into shrimp, this is your place.
My wife, mother-in-law and I stopped into this Beaufort landmark this afternoon for a late lunch, about 3:00 in the afternoon.  We have eaten here before and have always  been satisfied in the past but today I have to say we were all disappointed in our meal.  I had the seafood bisque which was very flavorful, great.  I also had the shrimp salad wrap, which was pretty much tasteless.  My wife had the Mahi salad which came with a good cilantro dressing, but the Mahi had no flavor of it's own.  My mother-in-law had a reuben sandwich, which again was way short on flavor.  The corned beef had absolutely no flavor whatsoever.  The reuben came with potato salad on the side, which I sampled and thought tasted pretty good with a refreshing dill seasoning, but there was a little too much dressing in the salad, very runny. Â
All in all, we were very disappointed in the lack of seasoning on everything. Â I'm wondering if it was because we came so late in the afternoon between the lunch and dinner services. Â It's possible the normal line staff wasn't present while we were there, which led to the lack of seasoning on all of the dishes. Â The bisque and potato salad, both items made ahead of time, were well seasoned. Â I will say the iced tea was great, as was the wait staff.
I can't say I won't go back, because the food has been good in the past, but based on todays performance, I would have to think twice about returning.
Clawson's is friendly, casual, clean, and the service is good. The decor and atmosphere are attractive, and it's not too noisy. The prices are reasonable.
So what's wrong with it? Â The food! Â By and large, it's mediocre. I have had some terrible things here, and some that were good. But mostly, so-so. The soft dinner rolls are reheated in a microwave before they serve them -- it's that sort of place. Â If you are not fussy about your food, you might well enjoy a hamburger and fries here, or some fried seafood. The wine list is decent.
I wish I could remember what I ate here. Yet, the only thing that stands out is the clam dip, which I tried since I don't eat seafood at all. It was okay, but that's only because I don't like seafood.
What's mostly fun about this place is that it is on the waterfront, the decor is very fun, you can sit on a second floor level and watch people below you, and sometimes, if you're lucky a random celebrity will pop in, such as in my case when Elly May Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies walked in for a visit.
It's also in a very nice and quaint town.
This is a sweet little spot on the Beaufort waterfront and a local's favorite. I popped-in for lunch on a rainy Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. The decor was just my style with antique quilts hanging from the ceiling.
My lunch was delicious - the perfect glass of sweet tea, tasty seafood bisque and a vegetable dirigible. What on earth is that you might ask? Well, a dirigible is about one of the most tasty stuffed and loaded baked potatoes I've ever tasted! It was delicious. I had the veggie version which was stuffed with broccoli, zucchini, sweet red peppers, onion, cheddar cheese, sour cream and sprouts. YUM!
Timeless atmosphere, great service and good food give this spot a solid four stars.
