Wow, a place has to be pretty bad for me to review while I'm still here. First off, there is a $5 cover. You would think with a cover they would offer some type of drink special. Yeah, not happening. I get to the bar and its $4.50 (!!!!) for a well drink. I'm sorry, I didn't know I got transported to an upscale venue by paying $5.
There are very little tables which means I will be standing all night. That would be okay, except there is nowhere to stand, except the bar. The bartender ignored us for a good 10 minutes. Finally ordered and he underpoured my drinks. If I'm paying 5 bucks with tip a drink, you would think my drink would be strong. It wasn't. Well, I just ordered another drink and mysteriously the price dropped by 2 dollars? This is the same bartender too. I'm in for a fun night (obligatory sarcasm)
They have a very specific clientele, I get that, but that clientele gets tapped out quick. They have to appeal to a younger crowd that also enjoys retro music. I have been going to Club 101, E9, Area 51 since I was 13 (all ages shows and such) and it breaks my heart to give such an awful review, but this reiteration is probably the worst. it tries too hard to be upscale without offering upscale service and drinks.
If I have to add anything later I will update, but after almost 2 hours my one star stands.
I only venture into this venue for the live music. If it werent for that, I probably wouldnt ever hit this place up. Its not my cup of tea. The crowd is an older crowd (hey cougars and sugar daddys gotta party too!!), as in like, you will probably run into your parents banker here. I will admit, the bands that roll thru here are amazing. Club 101 has had its run in several different spots around town, and have made Airway Drive their home for now. If youre up for a night of partying with your parents and their friends, or out to catch a sweet show, Club 101 is the spot for you.
Review Source:I've been to Club 101 in all of its incarnations and the only good thing that I see about the place is that they get some great live music acts. Â Despite my distaste for the actual venue, they've had some great acts (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Atmosphere, MSTRKRFT, The Sounds, and NOFX to name a few), but the best are few and far between. Â Shots and beer are usually overpriced, and there's no smoking patio so you have to finish your drink and step out front for a cigarette. Â I have to update this review: I recently went to 101 for an art exhibition and apparently there is a smoking patio (the large exit doors north of the stage), but they close it for concerts.
If you're into nightclub dancing, I would definitely recommend Thursday's Ladies' Nights, and Fridays have a pretty good Happy Hour price if you're into cocktails... However, after countless disappointments, I no longer go anywhere with a cover charge. Â
There's always something going on, but it's often nothing I'm interested in.
In short, I only ever return here on the occasion that they've got a great live act booked that I'd like to check out. Â Club101 isn't dying any time soon, but I don't really know anyone who cares for it either.
The space reminds me of 550 Barneveld in SF. Â You walk in, there's a bar, walk past the bar and through the doors into the dance floor space. Â The music was good here, if you like reliving your childhood...80s-90s retro music here. Â It was fairly crowded...a good mix of ages. Â Go for the dancing...and the drinks.
