A friend of mine lives within walking distance of The Cocunut Grove, so we decided to check it out on Friday. Â There was a $5 cover to get in, but it was worth it. Â There was a DJ who was spinning some Funk, old school R&B, 90's Hip Hop, and some newer Hip Hop. Â He played a good set, and he took requests too!
The drinks were cheap ($4 Draft Beers) and they had about 15 different beers on tap. Â I can't speak for the mixed drinks, but they were probably reasonably priced too. Â
It was a diverse crowd, and everybody was friendly. Â They have a dance floor, but there were only a few ladies dancing, and as good as the DJ was, I'm surprised that the dance floor wasn't packed. Â
Overall, it's a cool, laid-back spot and I would go back again some time.
One afternoon I saw a lady in the parking  lot in & out of  a red truck digging  through recycle,Later she walked into  the kitchen talking to the guy with the long beard (dishwasher) & the overweight cook,She (crack head)  was scratching her head & touching the dishes in the kitchen, this lady looked like she had not taken a shower for weeks,I had left  coconut grove & got fully refunded, Another night I decided to go inside of coconut grove and pick up a drunk cousin  of mine and drive him home, The door man or security guard with the blackest neck ever  says "that will be a $5  cover charge to get in"     wow yeah right (I'd rather buy 3 red bulls)  a shitty bar with no music & no strippers ( got to hell) My cousin can stay....
Review Source:this was my first club/lounge/bar experience.. came here back in the summer of 09 for a bday party so was in the party room.. mind you i said summer time so you would think the party room would have a.c.. lol it did not.. maybe it does now.. that is my only complaint.. cover charge is cheap, bouncers are ok not too asshole-like like many are.. the bar area was air conditioned and had a pool table and dance floor.. drinks were well made and in a timely fashion.. bar is nice and long with plenty of room to sit.. i might return.. just too far to just go.. need a reason  perhaps lol..
Review Source:I hate to give 2 stars to any business but, I'm not sure I've ever received worse service. Â I roll into this place at 11am on a Saturday. Â The ambiance is kinda cool, hole in the wall, but looks like it could be fun at night and if you could ever get some darn service, it might be a good place to watch a game because they have some nice TVs in there. I sit at the bar with the intent to order breakfast. Â There are a total of maybe 7 patrons in the entire place. It takes over 10 minutes to get a water and order and I didn't get the omelet until 40 minutes later!!! Â The server was unfriendly and seemed to be annoyed that we were there. I could definitely tell a difference in how we were treated compared to "regulars".
I'll never return.
came here on my 21st b-day bartender was nice gave me a free shot the place looked decent compared to some other bars i went to before coming here. the crowd is mixed with just about anyone only thing is there is some really ghetto folks in here tryna look for a fight. the 2nd time i came it was very slow bartender shut it down early which was kinda dumb because it was still 12 but watever they lost the business.. overall he was nice to coo place to go mon-wed to grab a pitcher and some wings with friends.
Review Source:This is one of my favorite spots in Vallejo. I've been coming ever since it was Billy Teeter's place -- it was even better then, 7 Stars back when it was predominantly a pool hall full of regulation tables. It was drinks, billiards, loud music, and sports on the big screens. I loved it for that.
Now they must stick in a restaurant for some reason that saves them liquor taxes or something and call it a family restaurant. To do this, they got rid of several great pool tables and build this bulking square walled-in cubicle for dining tables that disrupts the flow of the once grand room. Â
It looks like a walled-in Dennys. Not a lot of families eat here. It's wasted space. If I was asked for a cover charge - I'd leave. I don't need that level of party, just a fun spot to hang out.
Still, I love the mix of people and the friendliness of everyone. This is special and wonderful and too damn rare to be fair.
I also like the drinks, the fried foods, and the bathrooms are clean, I don't care what other critics say. On a busy weekend its fun to order a pitcher, some spicy chicken wings, maybe run a rack or two, and watch people have fun.
I traveled across America this summer, clubbing in Kansas City, and across the east coast. I did not see the diversity that exists at the Grove anywhere else. We have it going on in Vallejo.
Not the type of place I would normally go, but it was my cousins birthday and I actually had a good time. The place is a nice size and has like 4 or 5 flat screens, and 3 pool tables. So if you wanna listen to music, have a drink and chill this place would fit the bill. From what I understand they play all the games during the day. I did not try the food, but from what I heard its pretty good.
I went on a Saturday night and they had a DJ that played some pretty good music. The dance floor is kinda small but if you wanna dance you can work with it. It seemed to me a lot of the young ladies in the CG were "working", and there were a few sketchy characters roaming around.
The drinks were good, and relatively cheap. I would probably go again if my friends really wanted to go, but it is not on my list of places I want to spend a Saturday night.
Overall, the place is fine. Especially when they got a DJ. Â Once the drinks kick in, everyone dances. Â I also go there to watch others act a fool. Â Them wings are off the hook! Â Da young bar tender, Oooooh, fine. They should create a 2nd floor and put them pool tables upstairs for more dancing space on first level. Â But c'mon, cover charge? No way! They should get rid of that 'cause bouncer pockets that himself. Â Parking? If you get there early or else you'll be getting your car towed if you don't watch that sign on the street "NO PARKING ANYTIME" on side of fwy. So park across da street. Â Watch-out for checkpoints on Georgia St.
Review Source:I'm all for supporting local businesses, but I cannot support a place like this. This place is more grown than sexy. More ghetto than professional. More depressing than impressive. The patrons are either old folks trying to relive their past. Or young kids trying to act grown. Either way, its not a place you'd feel welcomed unless you can deal with the "regulars" --- and there is not a sharp tack among that group. Its kinda clique-ish. Like high school. With "regulars" demanding special services, special seats and deferrence others don't get --- to the disadvantage of other patrons. I don't know about you, but that's a little much for my tastes. Especially when you're talking about a hole in the wall sports bar. The service is pretty pathetic. The food is devoid of taste. And a few of the regulars make life hard for the rest of the patrons by being so obnoxious no one enjoys themselves. The restrooms are nasty. The drinks are watered down. And the doorman/bouncer (fat, baldheaded, black dude with a limp) goes out of his way to be a rude. Until the service improves and they get rid of that dude, I won't be going back. People come to watch the games, drink, watch TV, relax. Who wants to deal with some fat guy on a powertrip? Thanks but no thanks Coconut Grove.
Review Source:Been here a few times. At first I overlooked the unseasoned fried chicken and slow service, because the waitress I had was nice. But the football sunday patrons leave much to be desired. And the bartender (dont know her name but she wears the same Raiders jersey every time I see her) isnt friendly at all. Unless you are one of the "regular bar flies" that go there to feel popular. I think the owners need to control some of their customers or they may lose potential new customers who have plenty of money to spare and would prefer to give local sports bars their money instead of leaving town. I watched plenty of people come in and not drink or eat but just watch the game and leave. the trashy, obnoxious women who come there to attract men are not a good look. Sorry Coconut Grove...I gave you a shot...after a lot of people said not to bother...and now I see why. Get it together or you'll be another vallejo business casualty.
Review Source:4 star rating for the hospitality and taco Thursdays. The owner was in the house last night and hooked us up with free drinks, a round of 'Something News,' very refreshing and tasty made with pineapple juice. The taco deals are a STEAL, you can can get chicken or beef and for only $1.50, two were filling and they'll even customize tortillas and crispiness! This place is fun as long as you're with the right company otherwise its somewhat of a dive.
Review Source:If just remembering my experiences here put a smile on my face, they must be doing something right, right?
It is billed as a 'family restaurant' but i would never, ever, ever bring small children here. It faintly smelled of smoke but all bars do, to some extent.
I've been here maybe four times, each time drank THE strongest rum & coke of my life and had to stop at two. I came with two of my best girl friends  on separate occasions when we needed to get away from the black hole which is Benicia's First street.
There is definitely a huge amount of bling goin' on in this place, which was both amusing and off-putting - i actually felt underdressed! I've never tried the food and i don't plan on it, but next time i'm back home visiting the fam i'll be sure to drag my finally - of -age brother here for some supreme people watching.
Considering this place is within walking distance to our house, (no designated driver necessary!) I had high hopes. Â We walked in and this was no "Cheers". Â Got the feeling you gotta be part of the Coconut Grove guestlist to hang here. Â Will drink by beer at Town House thank you very much!
Review Source:Two of these things were not like the others....two of these things just didn't belong....
Seriously. Â I forgot my Sean Jean jacket, my Baby-Phat hoop earrings, and my 'street cred'. Â Word. Â And I don't even like E-40... shhh...I'm lucky I didn't get capped for that one...
PS- wtf is this Hyphie bidness anyway?
Two stars for the ridiculous Gin and Tonic that was so strong it burnt my nose hairs and I couldn't drink it. Â And for the bouncer who asked us if we were lawyers (we were business casual from a previous engagement..). Â And a star for giving me a glimpse of the Vallejo I'm missing out on, being what, whi...er, midwest and all...
