Huuby and I have eaten here a few times. I personally don't see the big deal about their "balls". LOL! We tried them on our first visit and I remember telling my husband, "Did our server say people drive from all over the Mid-West for these?" They are just ok, IMO. We've tried something new every time and have yet to be disappointed. Since our children can't go with us we will eventually try to do take out from here.
Review Source:5/19/12: Initial service was very slow. After being seated it took the waiter more than give minutes to take our drink order then an additional eight or so minutes to receive them. I purchased a http://restaurant.com coupon knowing that dinner for four would be pricey. We alerted our waiter of said coupon only to be told we were required to present a printed copy...total opposite of restaurant.com's website - the coupon was refused and we were told we would have to use it on a future purchase. Quite frustrating to say the least and I will not be back, nor will I recommend this establishment to anyone.
Review Source:Unlike some others, I was pretty satisfied with my two experiences at Cook McDoogal's. I was taken there for a business lunch while visiting Kokomo on business. I ordered the beef sandwich and the potato balls - the lunch was absolutely delicious. In fact, it was good enough that I decided to go back for dinner on my own. Unfortunately, my evening experience wasn't quite as good but still ok. My biggest issue was with the dinner menu. It really lacks variety, even for an Irish place. I ended up having corned beef, cabbage, and mashed potatoes. The dinner was good, not great. The other factor that took away from the dinner was the fact that Otis The Drunk was sitting next to me at the bar. It seemed that everyone knew the guy (bartender included). Somehow, nobody minded the fact that he was literally sleeping on his stool. Another rather hilarious thing happened while I was eating there (at the bar.) Behind the bar, they have a small seating area with barrel chairs and a barrel table. A 300lb+ gentleman made the poor choice of sitting in one of these chairs and out of nowhere, the legs exploded on him. Not only did the chair legs crash, he took the table down with him. It made a HUGE racket but was such a funny picture - I had to laugh. The good natured patron was asked if he was ok, his response: "Heck no, I spilled my beer!"
Review Source:Not a good experience, had to get someone to seat us. Â
We ordered fish and chips that showed on the menu as a half order. Â It was a late lunch for us. Â what we got was a full order at double the price with the explanation that after 3 they alway serve full orders. Â
The restaurant was not busy at 3 o'clock on a saturday but we spent much time waiting. Â On our food, on drink refills, and waiting on the server to return. Â Probably will not be on the list of places to return.
I went there with some friends today for lunch. We have been hearing rave reviews about the food, so we decided to try it out. The food was pretty good, but the lack luster service ruined the entire experience for all of us.
The CO2 was out on the cokes, and it took them until we were completely finished with our food to fix the issue and bring us fresh ones in "to-go" cups. One of the people that was with us didn't even receive his first drink until his food was brought out. Then when it was time to pay our checks, it took our waitress forever to come back to the table with everybody's debit cards. The experience was enough to make me not want to go back, but I am sure I will give it at least one more shot simply because the food was good. We shall see....
Very lousy service suits this town. I don't live in Kokomo, but I'm unfortunate enough to visit the nationally famous "stoplight city" to sit at stoplights. This restaurant feels a lot like driving here.
Don't expect to get far at Cook McDoogal's. The service is terribly slow. I ate here on lunch break. Bring your work with you, because you'll be there for a long time.
The waiters had a public argument in the dining area about which tables each server was responsible for. Arguing over table assignments made me feel very unwelcome by the service staff.
In addition, single diners are relegated to eat at the bar and discouraged from sitting at tables. I would have preferred a chair instead of a stool, especially how long I was sitting on it.
On the upside, the corned beef and cabbage was pretty good. If you come prepared, bring your work with you, and put up with bad waitstaff, the food was OK.
Money spent on decor should have been spent on food and service training. I was excited to visit my home town and try out the new Irish Pub. We waited 45 minutes for a table, which was no surprise on a Friday night at a new restaurant. We sat down and waited about 5-10 minutes for our server. He took our drink orders and was very excited to tell us about their Kilkenny which is evidently only at 10 pubs. I was really excited because they had Fat Tire on tap and I can't get that where I live.
We waited about 5 minutes and he came out to tell us they had to change the keg and it'd be out soon. We had to hurry to stop him so we could order an appetizer, since he never asked if we wanted one. He brought our drinks and mine was a Kilkenny instead of a Fat Tire. I told him it was supposed to be a Fat Tire and he really didn't say much. He said "Do you wanna try this for now?" I was like, well, I guess I can but I really wanted a Fat Tire. He went on about how good Kilkenny was. I explained that I can't get Fat Tire where I live and he just said I would get one tonight. I tried the Kilkenny and it tasted like Guiness without the flavor. Just flat lager. He came out and asked how we liked it. I told him I didn't really like it. He acted surprised and I told him I didn't like Guiness either. He was very resentful and explained that it wasn't Guiness (even though it's made by Guiness).
The salad and soup came out only about 4 or 5 minutes before the meal and a lot later than the appetizer. Two of us got Fish and Chips and instead of bringing Tarter Sauce he asked if we wanted any. We both wanted Tarter Sauce and I asked for Malt Vinegar and Tabasco. Still hadn't gotten a Fat Tire. I joked that maybe I had to finish my first beer before I got what I wanted.
He came back with nothing and didn't come to our table. He instead went to another table and took their order. He was facing us and we basically were staring at him the whole time so he wouldn't forget our sauce. He left and came back another time, not stopping at our table, only talking to another waitress and leaving. At this point we had waited about 20 minutes for sauce for our Fish and couldn't find a server anywhere. We flagged down the Host who may have also been the owner or manager. He just hollered over "Are you waving at me?" We all said "ANYONE". He came back with our server, tarter sauce, malt vinegar, tabasco, and a Fat Tire. I was so upset at that point we didn't really say anything when the server told us "They have me running all over".
After all this, the fish was HORRIBLE. The batter was still runny inside. There was NO flavor in the batter or the fish. The fish literally tasted like it had been soaking in water. When they brought us the bill, we were amazed to see that we were being charged for the Kilkenny that I didn't order. When he came over to collect the bill I jumped in before my dad could and said, "I did not order this beer, I did not want this beer, and I did not like this beer. I don't expect to pay for it either." He came back and said they couldn't take the beer off but comped us a Fish and Chips. I'm sure they get some kind of kick-back for selling Kilkenny, which was more infuriating. This was seriously the worst restaurant experience I have EVER had and I am not a hard person to please when it comes to food. I will NEVER return here. The "atmosphere" that everyone talks about is nothing more than some decent decor. There was no music, nothing exciting going on. Nothing even similar to an Irish Pub. It's too bad that Kokomo misses again.
This restaurant's charm has already started to fade. I had THE WORST service there tonight. The waitress acted as though she was bothered to be serving us. She was only at our table a fraction of a minute before taking off and she would leave before we could even finish speaking. (I'm surprised the order was correct) We were asked what we wanted before even being offered a menu!
The French Onion soup was extremely salty (not an exaggeration at all) and when we told her about this, she didn't even apologize or offer a replacement. She quickly hurried away with it. (I've had this soup on numerous occasions and it's been wonderful)
She brought us the bill and at that time told us to have a good night...before we even paid! The bill sat on the table for literally 10! minutes before my husband finally got up to find her and she realized we hadn't paid. After she ran our credit card and brought the check back, she didn't include a pen to sign it with. We tried to get who I assume was the manager's attention and he ignored us. I went to the bar to ask for a pen and it took them a while to find one...when they did, it exploded all over me!!! NOT a good night for Cook McDoogal's. Â If I didn't love the food and beer selection so much, I probably wouldn't return. I've been in this restaurant at least half a dozen times since they opened in November, and tonight was the worst experience by far!
My mom and I went here for lunch a few weeks ago and I am a fan. Â I really liked the atmosphere and found it to be a nice change of pace from the chain restaurants in Kokomo.
I couldn't keep myself from comparing it to the Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette, and I wonder if the two restaurants aren't some how related. Â I'm too lazy to do the research to figure it out.
Anyway, the guiness stew and fish and chips were tasty. Â I would want to eat here again.
