We went to the Cottage based on the reviews on yelp. Â I was surprised to see cloth tablecloths but the napkins are paper. The food was good and so was the service. Â We were a table of four and we had the mushroom fries, wings, ribs, and the chicken cordon blue. Â The fried mushrooms were good as were the wings and ribs. Â The cordon bleu was basically a tortilla with chicken and ham inside with a piece of melted cheese on the outside. Â But he really liked it. Â The menu ranged from bar type food and sandwiches to pasta, salmon and even prime rib on the special. Â We were pleased with what we had and would recommend this place.
Review Source:I am a big fan of the food at the Cottage. Â The ambiance is fine for what it is - in the front it's a bar. Â It's a smallish bar though. Â However small it is, I've never been in there with a huge crowd, so I never felt squished. Â
The wings are very good and that's usually what I'll get when I eat there. Â They have some great flavors and great variety. Â The drink specials are also solid.
The one downside could be parking - but I used to live near there so I know you can park behind or on the street. Â Overall it's a very good place.
I'm like a guided missile programmed to seek out great dive bars. Â I'm especially interested in dives with good food. Â As I travel the country I use the Yelp Mobile App to find them. Â I've been spending a lot of time in the Chambersburg area and these folks are the classic dive bar experience.
It's a tiny little place and it doesn't look like much from the outside. Â You may be tempted to pass it by and visit one of the many chain places that are practically next door. Â That would be a mistake.
You'll find the crowd to be a mix of young and old including locals and lots of folks like me staying in the nearby hotels. Â The beer selection is decent and the drinks are cheap. Â They have a My Touch juke box so I can play songs from my smart phone. Â I love that!
The food is much better than typical bar food. Â I'll give you one example. Sweet Chicken Tenders. Â These are chicken pieces wrapped in bacon. Â They are not the usual battered and fried pieces that you see everywhere. Â These are dusted with brown sugar and chili powder and baked. Â They are OMG delicious and a welcome change from fried food.
My business will be taking me to the Chambersburg area again and this will be my stop for adult libations and good food.
Was in town for business and my customer [local to Chambersburg] strongly suggested The Cottage for some local flavor. She suggested I try the ribs as they are seasoned by Fat Tommy's famous BBQ sauce.
Long story longer..the food was great, the hospitality was perfect, and the beer was cold.
Look forward to going back soon!
I mean, when you roll up, don't judge a book by it's cover at all. It's actually really quaint and cute inside. The waiters don't bother you at all and it's a nice quiet atmosphere. But the food - there's better places out there. I had the Maryland crab cake which as an entree comes with bread rolls (definitely microwaved from a sam's club "roll" freezer bag), and 2 sides. I got the Caesar salad and rice pilaf. The crab cake was like the size of my palm and was alone $13.95 even though you can get a side of it for $8.99, for some reason. I smashed and it obviously became larger. It WAS delicious but you can't judge an entire establishment based on one piece of food. It was perfectly seasoned but seriously, $13.45!
The Caesar salad was ... eh, i mean can you really go bad with a Caesar salad? The rice pilaf resembled something from a TV dinner. I had to add a bunch of salt and pepper.
My boyfriend got the 7 ounce sirloin steak and ribs which came with the dinner rolls and 2 sides. He got the salad and baked potato. He HATED his ribs. You could tell they were warmed up; the taste and texture was clear and evident. It was soft and not in a good way. The steak was OK, there was no seasoning which he likes but it was a little too well done for his "medium" preference. After 1 blue moon and 2 Guinness's it all totaled  up to be around $50.00.
The meat was bad, the prices were too expensive and the total experience could have been better.
I came in on a Saturday night and encountered no wait and no problems. The parking lot is difficult, but you can always park on the street nearby and walk around the corner if necessary. I was pleasantly surprised to see a veggie burger on the menu and even more surprised that it was actually good. The chips are clearly made in-house, and I liked how hot and fresh they were when I ate here. My husband was also impressed with the beer selection--one of the best in town, from what we can tell. This place is very "no frills," but with good food and friendly service, it doesn't need to be. It's not someplace fancy for a night on the town, but I think most of the people around here would drive into Gettysburg or somewhere else for that, anyways.
Review Source:Very busy on a Thursday night. There was an unsympathetic wait. The signature crab soup tasted like it came from a can. The portobello fries were nicely breaded and fried. The portobello sandwich was a worthy deal. The wings are standard fare. A nice slab of crab meat comes on the Chesapeake chicken. Â $2.99 for normal fries instead of chips seems excessive.
Review Source:The Cottage is a great place to go to watch football, and the wings rock! Â My fiance and I have also had several good happy hour specials there. Â I have to agree with a previous reviewer who commented that the chowder is too heavy on the cream, to the point of being unrecognizable. Â But the beer selection is solid (they usually have Roy Pitz on tap), the waitresses are friendly, and the atmosphere is good (always fun music on the jukebox, always super packed!). Â Wish the kitchen stayed open later (tonight- a Friday- it was closed by 10:00 p.m.), but overall I'd recommend the place!
Review Source:After reading the positive Yelp reviews, I was excited to try this place out, but was very disappointed. The waitress was NOT friendly and the tables were dirty. She never wiped them off. I had soup n' salad: the shrimp bisque (which was only lukewarm) looked/tasted more like thick salad dressing. The side salad was tasty, but was iceberg lettuce. If they want to be a low-cost/frills place, that's one thing, but they charge $18 dollars for entrees. If that's their market, I think they need to rethink. I'd say skip this place.
Review Source:They have been around since 1933, this speak well of them. Actually when you arrive you are taken aback at what you see - The place looks a little run down but not to worry. Best if you enter the restaurant through the back entrance. Believe there are no more than 12 tables in the seating area, the room is relaxing. Â Service staff friendly and attentive. The Mrs. had Haddock and I a NY Strip. Â We received a gift certificate to come here and we are very happy we did. Â We will be returning to sample some of the other offerings. Â A note: Â We were really surprised with the steamed clam appetizer they arrived on a plate and appeared to literally steamed, no juices do dip bread in. Â We are accustomed to having wine, onions et al with the steamed clams. Â Overall a great meal. Â P.S. Bar drinks during Happy Hour came as a surprise saving with our dinner
Review Source:This is a review for customer experience. Â My folks just moved into the area in the fall of 2008 and have not been to too many places to eat yet. Â Since I live across the country in Washington, I needed to come up with a Christmas gift for them. Â With all of the great feedback from Yelpers I decided to look at the website and found the phone number for them. Â I called and asked about a gift certificate and paid for it over the phone. Â It arrived at my parents house a couple of days later in a Christmas card (very nice touch) with my transcribed message. My receipt arrived in the mail a few days later with a handwritten note thanking me for my purchase and that they would make sure my folks had an enjoyable and memorable meal there. Â Thank you.
Dining experience (not mine but from some people I trust - my folks):
Sure enough, my folks phoned me to tell me that they had a great dining experience and cant wait to go back.
I stopped here with my family (all adults) when we passed through town on our way to somewhere else. Judging from the reviews, this seemed like the best bet in Chambersburg. Needless to say we were disappointed.
The Cottage is a cramped and gloomy place. The service was friendly but not particularly skilled. There was not a hint of innovation in the food (something suggested by another reviewer) unless you consider bland cajun spices on a brick of baked haddock innovative.
One reviewer mentioned the vegetables they push on you. Thirty percent of the vegetables are potatoes and 20% are slaw. The vegetable of the day was corn, apparently canned. I ordered the onion rings, thinking that a little place like this might make their own. I was wrong; they came from the freezer.
The Cottage may well be the best restaurant in Chambersburg. It's hard to say with a sample of one. I will note that my wife and I were at the tire store having a flat repaired. The guy there suggested Applebees when we asked about restaurants. We asked about the Cottage. He said it had very good food but was a little pricey. (Our tab for three, with a beer and a glass of wine, and before tip, was $58. You can judge for yourself.)
Looks can be deceiving! Â I lived in the Chambersburg area for a year before we went to the "Cottage". Â What a friendly, little down-to-earth place. Â Their crab cakes are the best for being so far from the Bay. Â Their menu selection is more than adequate and the service is always great. Â It can be a little tight quarters on weekends because the locals love it. Â We have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be seated. Â This is our favorite place to eat.
Review Source:Don't be put off by the sketchy exterior - go around back (good luck finding parking - the lot is a little strange!) and enter through the dining entrance (not the front bar entrance or the other back take out entrance). Â It's the kind of local favorite that you'd never ever find in a million years if you were just passing through. Â The menu is fairly innovative and the food is always good - just beware of the smoky bar in the front. Â You have to walk through it to get to the restrooms.
