Ah the Cowshed. Always a good time.
We love the shed. Good drinks and good fun. The owner Ray really makes the place for us. He really knows how to show his customers that they are truly appreciated. We always come here for a late night drink or for celebrations. Ray always celebrates with us making a big deal of our birthdays or special occasions. We even came here after our wedding for some post party fun. Always a good time at the old shed. Love it here!
Yes a dive bar, if you go to a place called the Cowshed, and expect anything else;
You are just plain dumb!
Came here last year for the first time with a guy I was then dating, who is now my husband. Â
Me I grew up in San Diego and in East county, so i know my share of Dives.
You have days that people can be annoying (drunks).
Funny when they have Karaoke, old people are so entertaining.
My husband has been coming here for years, even though we only come here once every few weeks. Â
They serve food til 1 am. Â never eaten here because I have Celiacs and have to eat Gluten Free.
They have a back patio where the smokers can go smoke....and its also where my husband asked for the second time to marry me. Â Yeah i know what your thinking.
But it was random and fits us perfectly, laughing as i even write this.
I mean we were married just over a month later on Catalina Island, it was amazingly beautiful.
Anyways if you just want to go and hang with  friends, people watch, drink for cheap, or watch a game, this isn't such a bad place.
I've only been here once, and wow, how fun is this place? The decor is gaudy in the most awesome way. Dollar bills on the ceiling, Americana, and a lot of folksy stuff... and other miscellaneous things.
It was karaoke night, and some of the people that sang are definitely interesting, but I still loved it. There's no song list available. You just write down the name of the song and the artist, and the DJ guy will grab it online or something.
The beers were a decent price and my friends and I had a great time. I want to go back and tried the food. My friends love it, so how can I not trust that?
I've also heard some funny stories about the owner and the various costumes he'll dress up in... and his antics!
I really felt welcome there and a place I could be a regular at (if I didn't live so far). It's quite a drive from where I live, but I look forward to coming back.
I went here on a whim with some coworkers. Â We arrived around 11 PM on a Wednesday night. Â The place was pretty empty and we were expecting to see the line dancing. Â Unfortunately, it does not occur on Wednesday. Â However, the staff was friendly and they have a great special on wings on Wednesday. Â I asked for some hot sauce and the server brought an entire basket of hot sauce. Â Delicious! Â I didn't realize they would have 20 varieties. Â It was awesome!
Review Source:I went there for the first time on Monday night after being somewhere else so I was already on a roll. The person I went with said, "we're going to the cow shed, it's a cool little dive bar. Wanna go?". I went and my expectations were met. It's a cool little dive bar with great character. Because it was a Monday, no band or karaoke and wasn't real busy but it was just right for me. There were people playing pool and I even got in on a game of ping pong. Despite what other reviews said, I found the bar tender (Will) and the regulars to be friendly & welcoming. I was only there for a couple-three drinks, didn't try the food but they were prep'ing hand formed burgers in the kitchen that looked good. I had a good time, no complaints, I'll definately go back. Five stars based on my experience and first impression. Five star dive bar, not five star hotel or fine dining.
Review Source:Cow shed is an ok place except the locals. I'm actually a "local" there if u consider every once in a while cuz I live down the street but locals make u feel unwelcome. Love the bills on the ceiling over the bar. Have one up there. The staff is cool depending on who's working, but this place is the DEFINITION of a DIVE bar. I recommend going on reggae/hip hop night. Best night to be there so check that out. Great DJs on those nights and always packed to the point after 10 they charge a cover charge. So show up at 9:55 lol.
I'm out
JLove d:)
Cowshed is the tits! The owner (Ray) is there more than half the time and is a RIOT! Love the atmosphere, good pricing and the employees are friendly and quick. Been coming here for years and yet to have a bad experience. Thank you Cow Shed for the long nights of debauchery and sloppiness!!!
Review Source:Fun. Reminds me of a real-life cowshed, depending on the night you're there. I went for the first time to see my husband fill in on drums for a friend's band on a weekend. It's true what other Yelpers say - very locals only feeling. You could clearly spot those that come often, and those that have never been to the Cowshed before (i.e. me). I've gotta give a shout out to D Verb who played that night.. rockin'! I was the only girl in the place with a beer in hand... seems I would have fit in a little better with the belly-baring 20 somethings with a cocktail or other fruity concoction. Oh well :-)
Review Source:"Don't go here with expectations of a classy, yuppy place. Â It is a dive bar. Â The regulars have "seen a little action". Â The bands are medicore.
But if you are looking for fun... Â The drinks are cold and strong. Â The crowd is friendly. Â You can dance and play pool.
Isn't the purpose of a bar to have a good time? Â Then this place gets an A+"
In my opinion, this is the perfect description of The Cowshed. The people can be weird, the bands aren't that good, but this is the place they had in mind when they came up with the word "dive" bar (maybe literally, because this place has been around FOREVER). It sometimes turns into a club where you can dance, sometimes has karaoke, always has pool, you can smoke outside, you can shoot a foam ball into a hoop for $1 and potentially a free pitcher, and as the review above me said, the drinks are strong. My only gripe with this place is that the drinks are a bit pricey, but you definitely make up for it with a good time. Don't let this place scare you - do yourself a favor and visit it at least once.

I don't know what they're doing with the proceeds from their $5.00 bottles of beer but it's not spent on cleaning! I thought the place was a little dumpy. Â I orderd a "Shocktop" and it tasted like the taps hadn't been cleaned in a while, switched to bottled Sam Adams. Other reviews rate this place higher, but I will not be back any time soon.
Review Source:It is what it is. Â Mostly a dive bar. Â Lots of regulars and the bartenders are nice. Â Been there a dozen times, just for a couple beers at the bar. Â The bartender remembers you and what you beer you drink, even though we're not 'regulars'. Â Don't feel like we fit in sometimes, but that's because of the number of locals/regulars at the bar. Â It's hit and miss. Â Might try some food next time based on the reviews from some of the other folk.
Review Source:Had drinks here after work on a Friday night; sat in back because some of the people with us were smokers. Â The place is sort of a dive, but the staff were GREAT and the drinks were fine. Â Extra star for the appetisers which we enjoyed everything we had, pizza, fries, chicken bits, probably some other stuff I don't rememnber.
Review Source:Love dive bars and this one is a winner! Â Nothing matches, there is random decor, the clientele is salt-of-the-earth local types, there is a stripper pole, stage and two pool tables. Â I could go on, but you get the gist. Â If you are looking for a random place to belly up to the bar, go to Cowshed.
Review Source:It's a bar, like many other bars, that makes you feel a little uncomfortable. Maybe I just go on the wrong nights, or maybe because the owner of the bar, Ray, is a little crazy.
The atmosphere is my favorite part about it. The place just looks cool. With all the random trinkets on the walls, the money on the ceiling, and what seem like miles of bar space, you'll always discover something new when you're there.
Sometimes bands come in and play, which is fun, but most of the time it's just regulars who all come in their big, weird groups and make you feel like you're intruding on their good time.
The prices are decent, but I think I racked up a 3-drink bar tab of $20. I mean, should a Long Island, White Russian, and Diet Coke cost that much? No. They shouldn't.
Still, a fun place to go with friends.
Mixed feelings about this place. Â I've stopped in a few times with my husband. Â Once at night while they had karaoke and it was fun. Â Once on a Saturday and we got hamburgers that were darn good. Â But the last time I stopped in with my 26 yo daughter about lunch time. Â No one there but regulars at the bar and their dogs. Â Sat down to order lunch and the bartender basically kicked us out because my daughter didn't have an id on her. Â We weren't ordering drinks-just burgers. Â Okay-whatever-rules are rules but what about the sign on the wall that said 'no dogs'? Â Now I love a dog friendly place but I believe having dogs in a restaurant is worse than serving a burger to a 26 year old. Â So we didn't even get lunch and still left with a bad taste in our mouths. Â ~shrug~
Review Source:I love the cowshed forever and ever. Okay so I have only been once but I went on a Saturday night and Will the bartender made us feel so welcome. Ask to try his homemade BBQ sauce it is the BOMB. I went home, completely wasted and threw over a pork loin I had been waiting to cook. Left in the slow cooker over night and it was phenomenal. Anyway back to the bar. When we first got there we felt a little out of place. We were there pretty early for a Saturday. 6 I think, anyway we asked for food and the daytime bartender was like I can't really make yo anything because the regulars get mad if I go in the kitchen during happy hour. Uh ok. Cool if your a local...anyway then she said as long as we picked something easy she could do it. We ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger and wow, it was really, really good. I asked the girl bartender, sorry dont remember her name, if she made a specialty drink. I always like to ask a bartender what their favorite drink is to make and try it. She was pretty unoriginal, red bull and pineapple vodka. Whatever I tried it, it was all right. Then Will came in and I asked him and he gave me a panty dropper. Couldn't tell you what was in it but it was good and I drank like 4 and could barely walk. My fiance and I were having a blast but since we had started so early we had to leave early for fear of me ending up puking in the parking lot...tends to happen. Anywho we had a great time. Go when Will is working. Awesome food, awesome service (Will). Definitely divey so dont go all dressed up but super cool place to chill.
Review Source:We went here for Halloween and I have to say the bartender didn't know how to mix drinks and we are all pretty sure he riped us off by over charging us every time we ordered drinks, we would order the same thing every time and it would be a different price every time! At the end of the night I couldn't believe how much my husband and I spent and we didn't even drink that much....I know that bartender riped us off! Other then that the place was pretty dirty looking on the inside. The only good thing about The Cowshed was the locals (the other customers) were very friendly! Overall I will NEVER go there again.
Review Source:C'mon with a name like the cow shed, what kinda place do you think this would be? Chances are you're right lol! This place is pretty hokey with its insane decor and location. Its right next to the dairy farm in san marcos. I had my reservations about this place at first b/c the ppl there are a little "different" I guess you can say but once you realize they are harmless and are just a bunch of alkies, you just get into the spirit of the bar. The bartendars are pretty chill. The owner ray is awesome! Nice patio area to smoke at. Wednesdays are country western nights and I must warn you, the ppl that go to it are pretty serious about their boot scoot'n! Saturdays are karaoke nights. Food here is also delish..try their burgers mMmmMmm!
Review Source:Possibly the worst place in the area.
The stage for bands is small and the sound is awful and muddy. The place is dirty, nasty and old, it's a surprise the health dept have not shut it down.
The beers are the usual cheap choices and the regulars stare at new people. The staff seemed to have no clue and one member of staff the night we went, Â had wet themselves and was walking about drunk and smelling of pee.
The ladies bathroom needed to be scrubbed down or burnt, Â it was filthy.
I think the water buffalo head on the wall said it all.
Now I like some hole in the wall local bars, they can be cool but this is far from it. Awful.
The locals tell me that this place is host to everyone from old skool bikers to punks to college kids, with a mixture of live music ranging from country and classic rock on the jukebox to live punk rock bands and DJ's throwing down hiphop, reggae & drum&bass.
I went to DJ a special event with the biggest ragga/crew on the west coast, DUB CHAMBER. The party went off without a hitch and in full effect. The venue is pretty laid back, even with the mixture of hardcore jungle kids and bikers. The drinks are strong, A wide selection of beers on tap. Covered outdoor smoking patio for the nicatine addicted. At least you wont freeze while getting your smoke on out there. Friendly staff. The decor in the place is phenomenal (ITS CALLED THE COW SHED, Use your imagination). Not much more to ask. I didnt see any other places to hang out at in San Marcos during my brief visit, but this place is worth checking out if your in the area.
