For us, a pleasant detour off the highway on a roadtrip to get a bite to eat, really not that far from Chicago either.
The courtyard was pleasant to linger in and the inside looked cozy.
Great place to hang, chill and catch up. Pizza on one side, beer on the other.
Business was swift on a Sunday despite, apparently because one of the few places you could get beer on a Sunday?
I struggled to find a beer that I was into because of sweetness or fruit, but my wife enjoyed several. There were some interesting combinations to be had.
Apparently the pizza is the thing there, some very interesting seasonal pizza combos to be had such as the corn beef and cabbage pizza - would love to try that but they were not featuring it. We did try the pulled pork pizza and it was good.
We were tempted and tried the beer shrooms, they were ok, but I would pass on them next time.
Tip - some righteous specials to be had - <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.carriagecourtpizza.com%2Fspecials-a-coupons&s=b548df3e8d8b3e5d77404fb450e3621fa996cd051febce094a9c7a49d18908f1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.carriagecourt…</a>
I really want to like Crown Brewing, but it's just not as good as it could be. The location is fabulous, the bartenders and servers are very friendly, and I love to support local businesses...BUT, the beer is just OK (lately their brews are between 3.5% ABV and 5% ABV) and the menu lacks creativity. My burger was overcooked and the app was really greasy. I was also irritated by the swarms of kids in the restaurant and on the patio. When the rug rats outnumber the adults 3 to 1, I become a bit testy. Although I'm just speculating, I'm fairly certain these little monsters were the reason our meal took forever to prepare and arrived cold. Ugh.
I'm not very eager to return to Crown Brewing. The dozen or so times I've been there over the past 3 years has been the same each time: mediocre at best.
Very cute little brewery tucked in the middle of a restaurant. Their beer line-up is pretty good. We stayed away from the IPAs since we don't like super hoppy beers, but enjoyed the Blue, Mango Saison, (surprisingly since I don't care for wits) the Orange Wit, and the Java Porter: Pecan Pie. The Crown Brown is very good too. Be sure to order the flight when you go since they let you customize the beers for it.
Beers: 4/5
Service: 3/5
Location: 4/5 - The direct door into the Brewery tap room is through the outdoor seating area, but if you walk into the door streetside continue walking toward the back and you will see it on the left.
Great place! I go here often. One of the most important things when it comes to this place is remember, Â CROWN DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FOOD! The beers are well crafted and is obvious that the brewer cares deeply. The bar is a bit small so sometimes it can be packed especially on half priced pints Thursday. If you have never been make it a point to stop in and have a pint or two . Or three of four or five........
Review Source:5 chair bar and 6-7 tables between two rooms will not allow a lot of seating which is a shame because I think they could pack people in under the right cicumstances. Especially like the Winter Warlock which was a brown ale with some subtle honey and maple, a relatively light IPA (Special Forces IPA), and the Java Porter which was loaded with coffee. Very nice articulate bartender Jamie and a pleasant brewmaster named Steve rounded out the experience. Very worthwhile nice little neighborhood nook with good in house brews and an interesting limited number of guest brews and bottles.
Review Source:I have not eaten here and cannot talk about the food although it looked very good. Â They are connected to a restaurant that served pizza and other such stuff. Â The place is fun and they serve good beer. Â It seems like the microbreweries are very popular these days and I am a fan of them too. Â You can taste the beers and decide which one you want and the beers are priced at about 4-5 bucks a pint which seems fair. Â I think it is one of the better breweries in NW Indiana.
Review Source:Crown Brewing has steadily been improving their craft beer game since they opened several years ago. Â Barrel-aged selections and seasonal beers have filled the gap they once had. Â One of their most fantastic beers is a Pumpkin Ale known as Ignis Fatuus Ale. Â It is an absolutely world-class interpretation of this style of beer. Â Wonderfully balanced - not too "spicy" and not too mild - it's the perfect pumpkin ale (which doesn't contain any pumpkin amazingly). Â Other selections which are available year round are Special Forces IPA and Crown Brown. Â While I love IPA's I can't put my finger on which hop is prevalent in the Special Forces IPA. Â It is a bit too skunky for my tastes, but your mileage may vary. Â The Crown Brown is a great session beer and goes down smooth as silk. Â Delicious. Â
After reading some of these reviews I see there is some confusion when it comes to food. Â Crown Brewing DOESN'T MAKE THEIR OWN FOOD. Â They merely share a building with Carriage Court Pizza which serves its food at Crown Brewing. Â You can also eat at Carriage Court Pizza and order Crown Brewing beers. Â It's a simple concept, but it seems quite unfair to lump a bad food rating into Crown Brewing when it should be placed under Carriage Court Pizza reviews instead.
To be fair, I'm going to split my review into three categories: beer, food, and service.
Beer: The beer is very drinkable, but not something I would rave about. I was very impressed with their Triple --definitely a shining star in their current line-up. I ordered the Crown Light next, and it definitely lived up to its namesake! Like --almost air tasting. While it was not the most complex beer --I could probably drink a keg of that on a hot day. While it's not the quality of beer you'd find at 3 Floyd's, it definitely beats slamming Miller Lite in a typical gin mill.
Food: Meh. Nothing spectacular, but not inedible. I had the chicken sandwich --decent. My fiance had the Bob's burger, which looked VERY good and apparently tasted even better. Their fries were okay --I would probably opt for a different side if I were going to return.
Service: The bartender who took over our table when the slovenly Carriage Court waitress decided to ignore us for twenty --count 'em --twenty minutes was GREAT! She made sure our drinks were always full, and our food came up fast. She definitely saved the trip, and if I were rating her alone, she would get 5 stars!
However, the waitress who ignored us, and could be heard loudly and obviously complaining to the bartenders about how busy she was: inexcusable. Your job is to GREET and SERVE. Not walk by with your eyes adverted while you b*tch about how busy the place is. You're working a Thursday night at a popular place --suck it up or get a new job. I wish I could remember her name, as I would have liked to have left a note with the management.
And if management happens to read this: If I could, I would rate her as 0 stars. She almost cost you two customers for life --but your sweet bartender swept in for the save.
I always look forward to going to Crown. Their beers are good. Their food is standard Midwestern fried things (not vegetarian friendly unless you want pizza or fried veggies or mozzarella sticks) and the service is always really friendly.
It's quite small so if there's a local event or game on you probably won't get a table. Their little outside patio is nice when it's open. And the historic town of Crown Point is a cute (albiet short) diversion after you've had your food and drink.
No, it's not the best beer I've ever had. But it's not bad by any means. The only one that blew me away was their Industrial Java Porter, which I bought a growler of. Their Pumpkin Ale was good too. And it's just great to see locals hanging out drinking beer that's not Bud Light, supporting a local business.
I've stopped in for a beer at Crown several times over the past couple years. Their beer has never impressed me, but on the other hand it has never been bad. Just not the full flavored interesting beers I'm used to when visiting a place that makes their own craft beer. Never had a problem with the service at the bar like some of the other reviewers. The gals that have been bartending have always been pleasant and quick to get me another beer.
I have had a nice experience at crown, but they need to improve the quality of their beers if they want to be talked about in the same breath as three Floyd's, bells, green bush, half acre, revolution, and our other great regional craft breweries we have in our area.
I stop by here every time I'm in NW Indiana. Â They make some really good beers. Â I enjoy their dark beers, especially the Industrial Porter. Â The IPA is pretty good also. Â I like that they sell beer in various sizes that way you can sample a larger selection. Â They make several seasonal beers I tend to like the winter beers the best.
Review Source:I think Crown Brewing is a great little brew pub. The tasting room is small but the beer is excellent. I especially like the specialty beers when they have them. The food comes from the pizza place next door and I like the pizza and wings. The beer prices are fair and they have specials Monday, Wed & Thurs. I joined the mug club and will make it a regular stop.
Review Source:I have a soft spot for places like this, a fact that explains my initial enthusiasm for Crown Brewing. But let's face it, this place is just okay in just about every respect.
With a few exceptions, the beer is, to quote a good friend, "unobtrusive". Fine. Very drinkable. Even good if you're weaned on the ubiquitous big brands that overflow this part of the country. But really, if you're a brewery, you should do a lot better than "unobtrusive"!
The food was much the same. The wings were fine. Not bad. But nothing to really write home about. Getting the wings 'Hot' turned out to be an unwitting demonstration on Carriage Court's part that there should be a lot more to making something spicy than just adding more Tabasco sauce. It was pretty clear to me and my partner that that's all they did in this case. Again, unobtrusive. Nothing they did offended my culinary sensibilities. But nothing they did really impressed me either.
And then there's the mild-mannered, even stoic, Neanderthal goon at the bar -- a guy who has no sense for the fact that part of a brewery's mission is to facilitate beer tasting and appreciation. Sure, I understand that you can't be giving out samples of your really expensive beer to everyone who enters the bar. But when we've already ordered the sampler flight, when the menu says that the flight includes "6 beers of your choosing," when we've ordered meals for two and sat there for an hour, when it's not crowded or busy, when we've got a drive ahead of us and we clearly want to sample beer without drinking too much, when we're willing to pay for a sample but just don't want to drink a full serving of your highest-octane selection, and THEN you tell me that the Imperial Stout (the particular beer in which I had the most interest) isn't available for tasting, well, you're a rule-bound, inflexible fool with no sense for context, culture or decorum.
The first thing you need to understand about going here is that the bar and the restaurant are SEPARATE ENTITIES. Â The restaurant is Carriage Court Pizza, highly mundane, pricey, and with a religious bent. Â The last item is not just my opinion; they host theological discussions here (together with Crown Brewing). Also Crown Brewing HATES and DETESTS all things California, and ESPECIALLY the L.A. Lakers, to the point of printing same on their beer growlers. Â I did not know this at first, and once I was watching the playoff game , and I couldn't understand why the bartender was so unbelievably rude. Â Anyway, to enter Crown Brewing directly without going through the restaurant, you go through their own designated door on the side through the outdoor seating area. It is small, and the bar is tiny, with literally about 4 chairs. Â The beer is above average for a beerpub, but so is their pricing. There is one fairly large screen t.v. Â You can look through the window at the back to see some of their brewing equipment. Â Basically, no atmosphere, so you better bring your own.
Review Source:Stopped in Crown Brewing after Illiana Mayfest and decided to grab some dinner. We were seated in a corner booth and ready to get our eat on. I ordered the bbq chicken pizza and was so excited. I was super hungry and thought it would hit the spot. I was so disappointed when my pizza arrived. It tasted like mayonnaise. One ingredient that is not in a bbq chicken pizza. I was so hungry I made myself eat two slices, but wasn't happy. And to top it all off, the service wasn't too great. Sadly, I doubt I will ever go back.
Review Source:It was a rainy evening so we definitely were unable to enjoy some beer al fresco. Â This was our first time here so we were not quite sure what to expect. Â
You walk into the pizzeria if you enter through the main front door. Â You have the option of sitting in their dining area, otherwise you can continue walking towards the back of the restaurant and you'll find yourself in the actual brewery/bar. Â
There were several people at the brewery that night.  I wouldn't describe it as busy.  After about waiting 10 minutes at one of the tables, we weren't sure if we were to expect wait service or if we had to go up to the bar ourselves.  The bartender finally came by apologizing that they were having a very busy night (Dark Lord Day weekend).  Ok fine, whatever.  We asked to try their beer flight.  Seven generous  glasses of all 7 beers were brought to us.  Only 9 dollars!  We were starving too so she brought us the restaurant menu.  Pizza, salads, sandwiches, wings, nothing too exciting. Â
We must have waited almost 30 minutes and she never came back to see what beer we decided to go with and or what we wanted to eat. Â Although she was friendly, it seemed like she was more interested in entertaining the people or her friends sitting at the bar. Â
We had enough at that point and decided to move on and get a nice dinner at Lucrezia's. Â
Service was not great but the beer is definitely worth coming back for. Â Will try to go back when it's warm out and we can enjoy a few brews outdoors.
