I have to hand it to the owners of Cullen's Tannery Pub - they are so responsive! They seem genuinely interested in pleasing their customers and creating a comfortable, local pub. I am so impressed! The bartenders are super friendly and welcoming and make you feel right at home. That friendly attitude really translates into creating friendly patrons, too. Everyone hanging out is social and accepting. NICE! Its just an all around great hometown place with a nice vibe. Â
Lots of great beers, too. I can't wait for summer and sitting on the back patio!
My boyfriend's mom was the one that mentioned this pub when she passed it by. What makes this place a 5/5 is this: Kilkenny!!!
Heard of this beer but never tasted. And I'm a total Guinness girl. So here comes this cold glass of wonder in front of me to drink and we were hooked!
Cullens is small, but eludes potential for great HH and a great finale for a bar hop in DT Benicia. Small towns do have small wonders.
Love it! Â Great selection of beers on tap and by the bottle. Â It looks like a nice selection of flavored vodkas, whiskeys etc. Â Char's next door extended hours to coincide with new pub hours. Â The remodel looks really nice from when it was O'learys. Â Dennis the owner is great. Â They have a resident cockatoo Remy that is cool too.
Review Source:I was looking forward to the opening of this place since I got wind of it via an article in the Vallejo Times Herald about steam punk. The space is a bit small, but they make the most of the area by having seating mirroring the bar all along the outer wall, and they have a nice outdoor area with shade. There are not one, but two Playstation 3's mounted to the wall and decked in custom casings with all the steampunk trappings, bronze, dials, pipes, and gears. A steampunk microwave sits in a corner, gears adorn the chalkboard beer list, and in a nod to the Tannery's past, skins are up on the wall.
When I and group of similarly aged friends dropped in, we were most certainly the youngest folks in the joint, and even more certainly the only members of the nerd crowd. This isn't a strike against the establishment, all they need is some word of mouth (and Yelp), which I'm happy to get the ball rolling on. The Cullen's are nice people. We talked big beer versus the little guys, and the sneaky tactics big brewers use to displace craft beers. We talked games, they seemed genuinely interested in getting a gamers perspective on what's popular in that arena. We talked reggae and the finicky randomness of Pandora radio's song choices. We talked about their hours, currently 2pm-9pm, which they're looking to extend ASAP.
The service was quick, the beers were great, all of the beers on tap were small craft beers, most of which I hadn't even heard of. They offer a selection of bottled brews, of which I'm pleased to say Guinness is the most mainstream. What's a pub without Guinness, anyway? They have a pretty good arrangement of liquor too, all manners and nationality's of whiskey, fine tequilas and a rainbow of flavored vodkas.
So, calling all nerds, calling all steampunk fans, calling all nostalgic pub lovers, gamers, beer snobs, hipsters and old timers. Make Cullen's Tannery Pub your destination ASAP.
...it's a STEAMPUNK pub for crying out loud!
