This is by far the worst place I have ever been to. I wish I could say I had I only let them burn me once, but shame on me: I have lost count!!! Food is a joke, takes forever and tastes like nothing, and that's if your waiter even shows up to take your order.  I honestly wouldn't notice if this place just closed.  Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else. To add a cherry on the sundae, the staff is rude as hell. Seriously avoid at all costs!!!!!

    Well, where do I start....
Went in for a friends birthday last night. Small get together of about 7 people..

Pros - GREAT live music. Regge band was awesome.
    Food was delicious.
Cons - service took FOR-EV-ER. From when we first walked in we all asked each other 'Do we go to the bar, or wait for a server.....?' Between having to shove my glass in a servers face because he forgot my water about a hundred times and my hubby wanting to tab out we literally had to throw ourselves in front of the kid to get his attention. And then trying to tab out a table of seven people who really wanted a check split vs all on one check was a nightmare.

Suggestions - get better trained staff and more of them. Also, update the menu so the servers don't have to say, 'we aren't serving pasta or soup anymore' it looks tacky.  The band and the delicious pizza saved you last night.

So sad to see what has become of a once bastien of old towne Arvada. I don't recall the last time I've received such awful service at a restaurant or bar. We sat at our table for 15 minutes with no one acknowledging us. They weren't mean, just 100% non-existent. I had to go to the bar to get my beverages, food, and ultimately the tab. Why, why, D-note? You used to be wonderful.

I've been going to the D Note nearly every Thursday night for four years. Last Thursday was the worst experience I've had. So, in an attempt to constructively criticize, here goes. When I arrived at 6, I discovered that the happy hour that used to go until 7 now ends at 6. Happy Hour should overlap the GWD quiz so that regulars can get at least one crappy American beer for less than $3.25. However, in order to get a beer in under an hour, I would have had to get it myself, as I did with my soda and straw and napkins and cheese and red pepper .... you see where this is going. There was one person to serve the entire restaurant and bar. Either hire more reliable help or move your own behind to help when short staffed. I used to love the homemade salad dressings. Both of the dressings I tried last Thurs. were horribly gloppy, overly sweet, and unappetizing. Even after the second server finally arrived, we still couldn't get our drinks delivered to our table. However, the server did bring us someone else's drinks and we took them. Sorry, whomever ordered the Jack & Coke.

So, here's the problem - Paul is the best quizmaster we've ever quizzed under and I want to continue coming to the DNote for his quiz. I will not have a problem bringing in my own food and drink if the new DNote ownership doesn't get a qualified restaurant consultant in there to help them fix the multitude of customer-killing problems. Toot suite. And get some artwork back up on the walls! I mean, how difficult is that?

You've burned me for the last time, D Note....

After 4 years of going to the D Note every Thursday, I think we've finally had enough.

The service is (mostly) terrible, and we stopped ordering food about three years ago because the pizzas just aren't very good and it can sometimes take over an hour to get your food. I'd estimate that every third time we go in, we sit without drinks or any attention from a server for unacceptable stretches of time. My friends have resorted to ordering their drinks at the bar instead of waiting (and hoping) that a server will come to our table.

I realize that the restaurant has new owners, and I'm sure it takes time to learn the ropes, but we just can't stick this out any longer. I am so sick of walking away pissed off every Thursday night. Why should I continue to spend my money at a place that gives me nothing but a bad taste in my mouth?

In response to Michael R. - my suggestions to the new owners would be to hire more waiters, and TRAIN the waiters, PLEASE. Think about the things that you hate about eating out, and realize that you're guilty of committing almost every cardinal sin of food service. Update the menu. Sweep and mop the floor (yes, we notice the giant disgusting dust bunnies lurking under the tables). Keep up on maintenance.

I am really sad that it has come to this. We met our best friends at the D Note, and have many other friends we enjoy seeing every Thursday night. I am really going to miss my friends and Geeks Who Drink.

    I'm curious...

If you've been to the D-Note in the last few months, please provide some constructive feedback on how you think they could improve the overall experience.

What would you like to see on the menu? How would you improve the bar? What type of music would you like to see and hear played there? Do you prefer Trivia Night or Beer Pong? (Or both?!)

Please keep your feedback constructive and realistic.

Then come back in soon and see how things are shaping up.

Great atmophere and vibe.  This place is huge.  Went for trivia with a couple of friends on a Tuesday night and there were 18 different teams in competition!  Lost a star due to the lack of wait staff (we ordered a thick crust pizza with sausage, green peppers, onions, and mushrooms) and received thin crust with green chilis instead of green peppers.  Also, the waiter was running ragged and refilled our drinks maybe once in the four hours we were there.  That said, however, I'd go back in a heart beat.  It was super fun!

New owners Dave and Mernie have really built up some great business in a very short period of time the Wednesday night blues jam is unbelievable. Now they have Doc rhythm hosting an all new open mic on Mondays, beer pong after trivia on Thursdays good to see the place is in good hands and will continue to thrive I Love this place

This place used to be awesome, great pizza, pasta, and the rest of the menu.

Since the change of ownership, the food has taken a nose dive, the service is weird and generally not good (high school age wait staff), and the vibe of the place is strange at best. (Beer pong?? YGTBFSM)

The ONLY reason for two stars is the Ninja (Adam) still works behind the bar with only about two other original employees.

It's a sad time in old town history

We chose this place because it was listed as offering gluten free pizzas. We walked in to a beer pong competition. No gluten free pizza & the fruit & cheese platter I ordered wasn't entered correctly & I got a non-gluten free salad that had to be sent back. When it arrived, it was the weirdest looking platter I have ever seen. Served on a steel serving tray (and a battered & bent one at that), the fruit was sliced thinly & horizontally like the cold-cut style cheeses, and a great glob of sliced black olives more suited to pizza toppings sat on the side of a small handful of whole olives, some of which tasted extremely metallic. The beer-pong competition was then in full swing, with the repeated announcing of inappropriate team names, and whoever was in charge of the music had ADD I think, making it feel and sound like frat-boy-central. When I asked for the manager, a disheveled gentlemen came over to speak to us & I was surprised to see he was the same guy who had been sitting on the edge of the stage drinking a few moments before. Not an experience I want to repeat.

    It was okay.

I've been wanting to check out D Note for several years but never really had a reason to do so. Today I had a reason: The West Arvada Dog Park was having a fundraiser; I've missed the ones in the past because I've always had to work weekends until now. However, I have been signed up for their e-mail newsletters and apparently, the place has been sold from the DeGraffs, to the new owners, the Rosenbergs (2-14-13)

I've peeked in the window before. One big room with wood floors and brick walls and a big stage to one side. Bar is straight back. Walked up to the bar and ordered a beer and got a menu. I took a seat;  A few minutes I was approached by staff and then another employee questioning if I wanted to order.

There was a band and they even got a conga line going (in the middle of the day.) You can tell this place is community-oriented with the upright piano by the stage. I don't know if I would want to do Zumba or Yoga in the environment though.

I'm curious how the D Note will change with the new owners.

Ok. The food is hit or miss and they do have a cover... I still think it is a great spot to hang out for a couple of beers and listen to live music.
Pizza is ok, definitely not great. I do like the hummus and pasta dishes though, and the Mediterranean plate is perfect to share with a few friends.
We've also been to the D Note for family concerts on the weekends. Service is always super friendly.
Great venue for live music with plenty of tasty beers on tap.

We needed a venue for our son's second birthday party, and D Note was awesome. We specifically chose Sunday afternoon to take part in "Baby Boogie" ; where kids dance and play with (surprisingly clean) musical instruments while adults kick back with a beer & pizza without worrying about their kids not staying seated or being too loud.

There was no charge for our reservation of 20 people and we were able to pre-order pizzas and snacks that were pretty much ready as soon as we arrived. We ordered very basic stuff so I can't say I was amazed by the pizza but I was definitely not disappointed, and all our guests agreed the food was good.

The staff was friendly and truly welcoming of families and little kids, who had the run of the stage and floor space and were having a complete ball. They were also cool with us bringing our own cupcakes. When the party was over we couldn't believe how reasonable it had been in terms of cost, and not having to clean up our house after a toddler party was like Christmas come early for us as parents. We will definitely be back!

I was debating between 2 stars and 3.  The pizza is just ok.  I wasn't impressed with either pizza I tried - a humus pizza and a cheddar/beef spicy pizza.  We ordered a cheese plate expecting cheese that you eat with bread.  But, it was their pizza cheese that they just sliced up.  Not very great.  This is a really cool music venue.  It seems though that the music should be a little quieter - it was really loud & you couldn't hear anyone talking next to you.  If it was like a concert, then it should just be music and drinks - but since there's food, I think it's better to listen, eat & talk with friends.  This place was a little confusing.  I like the concept - just that the food should be better.

I'm a huge fan of live music and local art in a neighborhood setting.  D Note is a great addition to Old-Town Arvada, and it's NOT a CHAIN, which is a huge plus.  I love the space, the emphasis on music, the friendly waiter.  The food was kinda meh, but it has potential.  It's something to eat while you're enjoying an adult beverage and rocking to the beat.  This place reminds me of a coffee house of the early '70;s (oh, now I've given away my age) and the food is kinda like stoner food, but in a good way.  I'll definitely be going back.

    Update.

While the space is cool and eclectic, and often hosts some good acts I'd be willing to drive a fair distance to see, the food here is just too bland and too lame to warrant an even average rating.

I went back recently and once again had the hummus appetizer. It's big, yes, but the hummus is literally and thoroughly tasteless. It was like chunky paste. Would a little salt hurt? And could you Vitamix it a little to get the chunks out? How totally disappointing.

We got pizza for an entree and it was straight up awful. We got the "Back in Black" pie which had olives, Roma tomatoes, blackened chicken, jalapenos, red onions, pesto and cheddar. It sounded like a train wreck when my husband ordered it and that's exactly what it turned out to be. There were a bazillion black olives per square inch and way too many jalapenos to be palatable. The cheddar cheese was a bastardization. I hated it. My husband will eat anything and ate his fair share, but that doesn't mean it was tasty. In fact he said it was the opposite of tasty, and that's a fact.

Service was good and my lemon drop martini was delicious. Two stars for that, plus the cool space. But ONLY two stars, and that might be being generous.

D Note, PLEASE offer a saner menu to include good burgers and say, fries. You don't have to throw a ton of strange items into the mix to produce decent and even delicious food. You just have to know how to cook it.

I've only been here for "lazy Sunday yoga." It is absolutely delightful. If you live in the area, definitely take advantage of this donation-based yoga session at 10am on Sundays. There is usually live music, which is so amazing, and the instructor really knows what she's doing-- definitely glad that it's not too hard as that's how it should be for "lazy Sunday" :)

We didn't get to try it because they were charging a $7 cover to get in.  $7...really???  The place was empty.  Stupid policy.  Blessing in disguise though.  We enjoyed a WONDERFUL meal at Udi's across the way.

Went for Salsa Sunday - Had a good time.  The atmosphere is relaxed, like you would expect from a blues club, Band was decent enough, better than other Salsa venues I have gone to (I am a newbie at salsa).
The only real downer is the high cover: $8pp

We went to see Blind Child.  It was my first time there.  I didn't care for the cover charge (only for the band?  BUT, many people "came for the food" and stayed for the band and never paid??).  Also, BEWARE of their ATM, which charges $2 for use and a $2 FOREIGN (??really??) charge.  So the cover was $5, but the ATM charges made it a $9 night (not to mention that you can only take out in $20 increments) just to watch the band (which was mediocre).  Wine was $7 for a 1/2 glass.  Ugh.  Not a great first impression.

My friends all swear this place is awesome.  I'm hoping to try it again with different results.

The D-note is an outstanding sleeper of ablues venue. Its clean, it dark wooded. Great beers, a superior staff of friendly folks and a jammin' mix of live music.

They do serve food, including and entirely serviceable pizza. Fresh and solid, perfect for the second beer.

But for me, its all about the music and "The Blues". Dance a bit, wiggle in your chair, tap your foot, shake your dumpy rump, flail til you fail,  act too cool for Ja-Rule, but go.

Three stars for the food and service, five stars for the atmosphere and art culture ! We dropped in for lunch, the D-note was alive with young people hanging their art for an art show and benefit. So watching them tap nails into the mortar between the bricks and hang their very cool creations while we sipped our drinks and munched on our salad and "Beast" pizza (which was a combination of every kind of meat...including chicken..) was really entertaining. A band was also setting up on the stage behind us. I really wanted to stay and watch everything, but we had other things to do. :(
The service was slow and distracted, I had to find the waitress to re-fill my drink. The pizza was good, but not "knock-your-socks-off."  I hope to go back for drinks and entertainment, not really into their food. Fun place !

Went here to see a band, I loved the place.  Good beer selection and kid friendly.

I did not try the pizza.  But anytime someone is eating NY style pizza with a knife and a fork, it sends up warning signs.  However the people I talked to said they liked the pizza.

I wish I'd started my Torchwood/Doctor Who marathon two months sooner.  It would have helped.  Well, it would have helped with just the one question, but still, knowing now what I should have known then burns just a little.  Oh well, now I know.  It's called the TARDIS.  Gretchen of today is embarrassed for past Gretchen.

Oh right, WHY would I need to know that tiny bit of information at the D Note?  For trivia night.  Such a nice, smallish mix of people congregating, answering random, out of left field questions.  Small microcosms of friends, making up a random hodgepodge group.  I was used to my bar in Houston's very crowded version of Thursday night Geeks Who Drink trivia, so I was pleasantly surprised.

We got the TARDIS question wrong, as well as one about Lion King and animals from Madagascar.  Hold on, it was my team's answer writer who got the Madagascar question wrong.  Didn't believe me.  There were quite a few more questions that we got wrong, but let's not go there.  It would be dull for you and horrid for me.

I buried my woes in a quesadilla.  The only good thing about it was it's name: David Lee Roth.  The vegetables were bland, the cheese was bland.  For a quesadilla, there was no zip.  It was not Just like Paradise.

In turn, I buried my food woes in wine and more trivia.  Not terribly shabby in the end, we came in third place (out of eight...and two teams left early).

As we packed up to head to the next bar, a band was setting up onstage.  Nice to see that Arvada's getting a bit more of a nightlife that it had a few years back.

Charging me a cover on a Friday night at 6:30p when I tell you I'm there to eat and not for the music, after you specifically ask me if I'm there to eat or for the music..... not a good way to start off an evening.  Not to mention the fact that the website does NOT list a cover charge for the 7pm performer.

I really hope that guitar player got our $10.

At any rate, our waitress was impatient at best, rude at worst.  We were punished with passive aggressive attention after not being ready to order immediately.  The beers are overpriced at 4.50 a bottle, and the panini's were nothing to write home about.  the cheese inside was barely melted.  Watching the waitress open a bottle of wine at the next table and then fill both glasses within a 1/2 inch of the top, and putting the bottle (complete with wine drips down the side) directly on the table.... really?  Even casual joints such as this need to remember that all good staff deserves training and pointers in professional service.

On this particular Friday evening, the Olde Town Arvada harvest festival was kicking off, so there were plenty of folks milling about.  However,  I noticed that a few of the owners (all siblings, I believe) were present, but none were tending to the duties of managing the restaurant.  Tables were left unbussed, no one was checking as to the filling of water glasses, tending to another round of beers, or the quality of the food.

The concept of the D Note still intrigues me, as an art space, a performance space, and an all out community hub for zumba, networking meetings, etc.  However,  in my book, as a restaurant and as a bar,  it is going downhill, and I'm willing to consider other options in the Olde Town neighborhood for eats and drinks before settling in here to enjoy some good local talent.

EDIT:  I emailed the management about my experience and have not received the courtesy of a response as of 9/16/10.

This was an email I sent to the restaurant and never heard back from them:
I saw no where on your website to contact or make comments. My boyfriend and I just left the restaurant. Trying to stay local to Arvada we popped in. We went in to an empty place, ok for a Sunday afternoon. Our waitress Deva came and asked what we wanted to drink-(ice tea and water-never re-filled). After asking what the specials were she left and went to the kitchen to find out (came back knowing the soup, we asked about the pizza. She left again to find out). I asked for a little more time to decide. We decided on the shrimp pizza with ricotta cheese and the beastie pie with a small caesar salad.

The salad took 20 minutes and was very, very small. The romaine leaves had brown tips and pizza parmesan for $4.75. Waitress came to take the plate, but didn't bother to ask if anything was ok when she seen the barely touched salad. Another 20 minutes later the pizza arrived. After 4 years in culinary school I couldn't even taste the "fresh" basil pesto. The shrimp was unseasoned and the pizza very bland. The beastie pie had sauce that tasted like it was tomato sauce and nothing more. I was very disappointed in the whole experience. The rest of the time we were eating our waitress never came by (even though she walked past us several times, her 3 dollar tip was not earned at all)! 3 other waitresses stood by chatting after setting up table.

I understand being family friendly but for a couple with no kids having them running around screaming with no shoes on while your trying to salvage a $30 lunch was a bit too much. Bland pizza, kids running around and music from the smurfs made for a horrible experience and nothing your website made the "concept" seem like.

    A very disappointed customer

Actually I give them a three and a half. The venue is quite cool with live music every night. They feature local artists on the walls with great talent overall. Salsa night is amazing, as the place gets packed and people even trickle onto the sidewalks. Lessons are provided if you get there early enough.

Everyone raves about the pizza, maybe it's just too hippiesh for me. I need a good slice of NY style. They have Stone IPA on draft- huge bonus! Great service and super cool wait staff.

I've always been a fan of Old Town Arvada- cute shops and stores. I've done the dive bar across the street, once and only once. That was enough for me (It's the one that posts the sign Hippy parking out back).

I have only been here to see my friends band play a few times. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have ever stumbled upon this place considering Arvada is kind of out of the way for me.

Lets just start off by saying that I am really frustrated with this whole "we are understaffed cause there is a recession going on, dude" attitude that a lot of restaurants I have been to lately seem to have. Just because it is a Tuesday night doesn't mean that people don't still want to eat and/or drink a beer. Or let alone, see their friend's band play.

I remember really enjoying the pizza the last time I went to the D-Note but on this visit I was not in the mood for pizza so that kind of set my night off to a bad note (ha!). There was only 1 wait person and 1 bar tender working on the night I went. It took forever to first get our table cleaned off, to order our drinks, to get our drinks, to order our food, to get our food. I just think that when my boyfriend has to go to the bar to just get some waters, is a pretty bad sign.

I just wish restaurants would understand that people still go out to eat, people still need jobs, people will not come back to a restaurants if it takes forever to order and for tables to be cleaned off, and bills to be even picked up, therefore it will lose customers. Hire more help!

This place is an undiscovered gem in a sea of generica.

I have never had bad service, and have been there over 7 times.

Let me clue you in on a key to enjoying your stay at the D-Note, possibly one of the best restaurants in Denver (ambiance, location, food, and entertainment all combined). Do NOT order "regular" pizza!

By that, I mean, do not order "a pepperoni pizza". Use the pre-existing "special creations" menu to choose from the eclectic selection there.

My personal fave is the Brick House (spicy!) - a combo of pepperoni, bacon, red peppers, bbq sauce and gouda...HEAVEN

The D-Note has a HUGE selection of amazing "house" pies, all named after music personalities, songs, and famous people. This would be lame if the pies weren't so good.

You never know what entertainment will be on deck any night, but it's always decent-to-outstanding...the owners are super friendly and will often be on-site hustling around.

I can't say enough about this place, PERFECT to take an out-of-towner someplace TOTALLY unique to Colorado. easy 5 stars

I'm now a fan of oldtown Arvada and a big fan of D-Note.
My first trip to D-note was to watch my friends band play.  (Reverb and the Verse)
Props to the Great DJ as well.
I have to say I love the layout. The bar is easy to get to and there are lots of tables around to get a good seat around the stage.
I was wishing I didn't eat 10 lbs of pasta before I went because the food smelled really good.
However, I did enjoy a few glasses of their Cali Pinot.
The people here are very chill and friendly. It's one of those places that make you feel like you've been going to for years.

Fairly unknown to those outside of Arvada, the D-Note is a decent music venue/bar in "Old Town Arvada".

At first glance, the place resembles a dance hall with chairs and table scattered about. But this is a perfect set-up, since the music stage is in the center and it's viewable throughout the entire place. A bar sits in the very back, but make no mistake, the music stage is the main attraction, here. The acoustics can vary depending on the band or act performing that night, but overall it's a great hangout for local music.

The D-note's location is worth notiing, as well. As mentioned, it's in "Old Town Arvada"-- a pleasant downtown area that resembles the main streets of old. Built on a hilltop, Old Town even overlooks a portion of the city. Longmont, Littleton and Fort Collins have similar areas, but frankly they're not as cool.

When you're getting some fresh air or out for a smoke, be sure to waddle over and check out the old train depot across the street. It beats other bars, where you can just stare at an alleyway.

Parking might be an issue...mostly parallel street parking (sucks for those with Chevy Tahoes). But there seemed to be a free public lot, located about two blocks to the west.

Nice place...you could take your friends, a date, or even some relatives (providing they like live music) and you'll score some Cool Points.

We found ourselves at the D Note's open mic night yesterday.
I like the venue itself with the local artist creations for sale on the walls, the slightly dark euroclub atmosphere, and environmental friendly cleaning practices.
The audio for the bands was all right, not superb.  Some of the instrumental balances were a little messed-up, though I'm not sure if it's the acoustics of the building itself.  The audio/announcer/dj was an energetic entertaining guy and I was pretty found of the music that played during set changes.
We ended up only ordering dessert and got the One Love pie.  It was essentially pizza crust piled with dessert like fillings.  I wasn't really a fan.  There wasn't a good balance between the ricotta cheese and the apples and sauces.  I just wasn't impressed.

I love the Dnote!! I consistly bring friends who later return on their own. The mix of organic hippy pizza and live music is addictive. Don't forget the wide variety of wines to enjoy with your pizza (there is also plenty of beer and a full bar).

The help staff will answer all your questions and they will be upfront with the fact that your pizza may take 20-30min to arrive (but it is well worth the wait!). I live for the Rockn in the Free World pie.

Music, music, music! If you get there before 7pm you may not have to pay a cover, but don't be surprised if someone does approach your table and ask for the cover. As other Yelpers reviewd, baby boogie and salsa will get you dancing.

The chocolate martini is deadly. Their dessert pies are works of art.
    The bathroom is informative.

I typically like to go to a place at least two times before the Yelp however in this case I am not sure if I will ever make it back. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't memorable either.

We went for a business function that was being held there. I came in and sat down at a table near the door as my co-worker hadn't arrived yet.

10 minutes I waited. I was thirsty. Just got off work. I was hungry also. No waitress. I saw her helping others.

Alas...my co-worker came in. I of course suggested we move to a more centrally located table. It still took a good five minutes before she came to drop off the menus and to ask what we wanted to drink. Overall service was pretty crappy. Mid way through our waitress asked us to close out our tab with her because the new waitress had come in and she was servicing her tables. It was a bit of a pain as we weren't finished with our order and now we had to track down a new waitress who wasn't any quicker than the old one.
The food was okay. Drinks were good. They had live music.

    Whatever, it was :::::::::shrugs::::::::::::?

Simply put this spot made me want to learn to Salsa.. Again. I've tried many many times in my life, but never stuck to it. But experiencing D-Note's Sunday Salsa inspired me to make it a goal next year; in 2008 I will learn to do that damn dance.

The club is a grand room with a stage and room for everyone to shake, dip, twist, switch and turn. Salsa and merengue poured out from the speakers, onto everyone's bodies. There are dancers of all levels present, from step on ya toe beginners to those that look suave steppin' on a roach. There's a bit for everyone to love here.

There were plenty of women around, and the drinks were poured fairly, not strong, but not watered down either. And coming from LA, I have to say they were at a fair price too.. The drinks, not the women.

The D-Note is owned by three brothers, who are varying degrees of goofy, silly, and wacky. Between them, they've managed to organize events galore for the D-Note- everything from Salsa nights to some of the oddest folk performances in Colorado to local garage bands rocking out on this cute little bar's stage. Something for everyone- just check the schedule beforehand, or you might find yourself listening to an accordionist strike up a lively polka when you were hoping for local indie rock.

During the day, you can find gourmet pizza by the slice or pie. I like feta cheese, like, a lot, so I can appreciate that! In fact, the Westword calls it the best gourmet pizza in Denver. You can  also check out some cool local artists- the wall hangings are consistently pretty interesting.

Oddly enough, the D Note, though it is neither vegetarian nor a restaurant, also copped the Westword award for Best Vegetarian Restaurant. Huh? I trust the Westword, though, so I'm gonna have to stop by soon for another slice of that gourmet pizza- gotta have it if the Westword says so!

Of note: Jack White's former band, The Go, is playing tomorrow (August 10).
