Now this is good BBQ. Â Pulled pork and brisket were fabulous. Â Didn't get the ribs because I went on a Friday night at 5pm. Â All the ribs were gone. Â That should tell you something. Will go here whenever I visit Lafayette. But will call ahead for ribs! Baked beans are a must if you like dark brown sugar and molasses.
Review Source:My boyfriend says "I had at LEAST a 4 experience", so I guess I'm going to round it up to the good ol' 5. We shared the combo platter...that was allllllllllot of meat. Got it with the ribs, the brisket and pulled pork. Also came with two sides so we got a bowl of green beans and a bowl of mac n cheese. First off, the meat. HOLY SHOOTNESS on the pulled pork. The sauce was not too sweet, which was a pretty big surprise and it was just delicious. The ribs were just okay, a little dry and not too flavorful and since I'm used to getting the spares at South Street they kind of fell short. The beef brisket was juicy as hell...just delicious. Â Whenever I want ribs, I'll go to South Street but for anything else this place is it.
The mac n  cheese was so good that we actually said we'd come back just for mac n cheese which would usually sound ridiculous. The green beans were a little flavorless for me. They had bacon in them but not much seasoning. But they have a ton of other sides like whole sweet potatoes and corn.
To end an amazing dinner, they actually brought complimentary brownies to our table. And just to put the cherry on the top the brownies were rich and fudgy and moist and...ahh. Had white chocolate on the top too and you could really taste it.
The guy working there was also really nice, gave us advise on what to get etc (and brought us brownies). Yeah, I'd say it was a pretty good experience.
I only found this place after I had graduated and left Purdue which is really quite unfortunate as everything I had here was well prepared, hot/fresh, and delicious. Â I had the Brisket sandwich with green beans and baked beans. Â The brisket was hot, flavorful, and juicy (though I did get a big fatty bit, but not enough to be concerned).
I cannot speak for the catering, but it's my understanding that if they don't offer something that you are looking for and it's carried over at the D&R Market, they will prepare it there for you.
The people working there are very friendly and helpful and the prices are fairly reasonable. Â The prices are a bit higher than places like south street, but the quality of the food makes up for this.
All in all I plan on going back whenever I return to Lafayette. Â A word of wisdom though: Â The reason I hadn't found it while I was there for school was because this is a small place and easy to miss. Â Have someone that knows show you where it is, or look for it on a map.
I have tried all of the local BBQ places in Lafayette and this is probably my favorite. Â Their customer service is excellent, portions are pretty big, and the prices are reasonable. Â The only way I'll get better smoked foods is if I make them myself. Â Also, the side dishes are excellent, my girlfriend just eats those when we go.
Review Source:Let me start off by saying I'm giving D&R BBQ 4 stars instead of 5 because their selection is not reliable. Â Sometimes they have no chicken. Â Sometimes they have no smoked pork chops. Â Usually, when I decide I want to go to a place, I think "Mmmm, I need to have "x thing on their menu" today!" Â Sometimes, I go to D&R BBQ and they don't have "x" and I am sad.
With that out of the way, D&R BBQ rocks. Â The smoked pork chops, when they have them, kick absolute ass. Â The whole smoked chickens rock the house. Â The ribs are hella-good, as is the brisket. Â The sides are good too - particularly the greens (when they have 'em). Â
They've recently introduced a line of house-labeled sauces that are absolutely awesome. Â I've tried 2 of them so far, and am in the process of working through all of them - but so far, the 2 I've tried are damn, damn good. Â Just as good as SSS's sauces - easily.
So, 4 stars - but only because of the selection reliability issue. Â If you're the kind of person that doesn't care - just wants BBQ something - then consider this a 5 star review.
I really wanted to like this place. The stellar reviews made me go back to this place twice; however, this place just did not work for me. Both times I had the ribs. Maybe I just have a different taste bud, but the ribs (without the sauce) were just way too salty for me. I also was not fond of any of their side dishes.
As I said, I might just have a different taste bud. I wish this place well, the service was excellent and the staff are very friendly.
Came here today because I didn't feel like South Street, left an evangelist.
The customer service is awesome. We came in shortly before closing and were planning on getting our food to go. The man behind the counter encouraged us to stay and then basically had us try half of the stuff in the restaurant. It was all outstanding.
I am a fan of thick, stick to your ribs barbecue sauce and this place has it. My boyfriend and I shared a combo platter, which came with pulled pork, ribs, and brisket, and two sides. We ordered the mac and cheese and baked beans for the sides... it came with mac and cheese, baked beans, jumbalaya, a huge piece of fried chicken because we "had to try it", and the potato salad.
Two other women came in while we were there. While correlation does not imply causation they seemed to be grumpy as all get out when they came in and they left laughing, I'll let you infer what you will.
Prices were extremely reasonable, portions were huge, barbecue sauce was excellent. I recommend staying and eating there, you'll get some great conversation, a lot of free samples, and the smell in the place is amazing.
Can't speak to the catering service, but the prices for that seemed reasonable as well and I can assure you the food is great.
D&R BBQ & Catering is related to, and shares a strip mall with, D&R Fruit and Meat Market. It's a catering outfit, but also serves on the premises -- and I can tell you, the food is absolutely fantastic! To make a long story short, D&R BBQ is to BBQ restaurants what D&R Fruit and Meat is to markets. It provides some stiff, healthy and honorable competition to the South Street Smokehouse, just down the street. And Jeff, the guy who manages the place, is as nice as could be.
The baked beans are a special treat ... in fact, they might be the best I've ever had. But I tried the brisket, pulled pork, green beans and potato salad, and all were absolutely spectacular. All of these are sold to-go and by the pound, in bulk for your catering needs, or as a hearty and tasty meal. I recommend it to anyone in the area; but it should be mentioned that a place like this is worth traveling for!
