I heard the news today that Daniel Street will be closing in January - reportedly being turned into a pizza place - so I had to write a review while reminiscing over the good times I've had here. Daniel Street's not my absolute favorite venue - there are ways it could have improved - but there will always be a special place in my heart for it. (As I write this, I'm wavering on describing Daniel Street in the past or present tense since it's closing soon, but I think I'll stick with the present since we still have a month left - it changes owners in January, and there are still shows going on this month.)

Over the past year, maybe two, I can think of a lot of great bands I've seen here, including We Are Scientists, The Octopus Project, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Surfer Blood, and Kurt Vile, just to name a few. The last time I was here was for Man Man in October. The place was just full of energy, and it was an incredible, incredible time. I recently missed the Mister Heavenly show at the end of November because I was away that weekend, but now that I know the venue is closing, I wish even more that I could have gone.

The venue's located in an adorable part of Milford, right next to the train station, so you can park in the train station parking lot, or on the street. When you walk inside, there's a lot of space with a bar to the left, a few small tables and stools and chairs along the edges, and a slightly raised stage in the back corner facing a big open floor. It hosts both all-ages and 21+ shows. Now that I've been over 21 for a while, I clearly prefer the 21+ shows, though Man Man was all-ages and maybe one of the best times I've ever had here. The bar inside Daniel Street is only open during 21+ shows, which is one way to guarantee not serving underage patrons, but it's also a pain for the rest of us. For the all-ages shows, the 21+ crowd can go across the street to the Stonebridge, which is owned by the same person, for drinks before the show and between sets, which isn't a terrible option, but something I was only willing to do once or twice.

Looking back, I can say that I've never had a bad time here. A lot of the credit definitely goes to Manic Productions, who've hosted a lot of shows here (and still have a few left at this venue and lots more to come at other venues in the area), but Daniel Street, in general, is a good venue, and it will be missed.

Great place to watch live music.  It has a small stage which can barely fit the bands on it, so there will be no dancing up there.  Smaller venue compared to the other bars with stages (Black Bear and Toad's Place).  This is nice for new bands or if you enjoy getting close to some of the bigger acts that come through.

Great venue for a small show but they really have quite a gig going where they advertise one thing and do another.  I'm open minded to some casual approaches to when an opening band starts and the main show follows but I'm not open to TWO opening bands, especially when the main show is advertised to start at 9 PM and the show actually wasn't scheduled to start until 11 PM - of course we didn't find this out until we got in the door, paid, and bought a $10 crown and coke...

Oh, parking is pretty much a nightmare as well on weekend nights so plan accordingly and don't have high hopes for the opening bands either.  We actually ended up walking out as it was so out of synch with what we were there to see it wasn't worth the musical discord to go through it all (for two hours no less!).

Great place to see live music. Have seen some good bands come through here in the past year: Low, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Sebodah, Beats Antique, Ted Leo, Mono.

I don't understand the bad reviews. If you go on a night where you're not seeing music you enjoy, why wouldn't you feel as if the "cover" was too high and the experience was bad? It's your own fault at that point for going to a bad show. Bad shows do happen at all small venues. I've personally seen some great shows at Daniel Street and am glad there's a place to see good live music in the area.

Daniel Street offers something no other venue in downtown Milford does: a place to listen to amazing touring bands and great local bands. I have seen too many bands here to count, but I am always grateful for the opportunity to experience music without having to drive far away. Daniel Street Rocks! Close to the train station!

Update : So I went out and saw these bands play . There were two bands on before the "Koffin Kats" . Liked the music but i just cant take the stereotype Punk rock screaming lead singers . I didn't understand a single word . Yeah it was really, really bad and whats with the spitting? I know your an angry punk rock rebel but take it easy sonny , its Wednesday night in Milford Ct & there's like maybe 50 middle aged folks who are looking at there watches and thinking "man this is gonna hurt tomorrow." And it did.

This place is really not a very good venue for watching live music. The stage is tucked off in the corner and everything around it is very oddly arranged.

The bar is nothing special, as it offers your standard frat-boy variety of beers, lame drink speicals, and when the drinks are not on special they are overpriced.

Also, you'd think that since it was owned by the people who own Stonebridge, which is right across the street, that perhaps you would not have to pay a double cover charge to get into both places, but you'd be wrong. However, I think they do give you like a buck or two off.

Regardless, seeing as how I think the Stonebridge bar scene is pure unadulterated evil, that should tell you why I love Daniel Street oh so much.

Of course, as much as I'd like to sit here and continue to bash the crap out of Daniel Street, I admit that I go here every once in a while when a friend of mine's band is playing or if I'm coerced by someone else. I mean, it's not the worst place in the world, but I would never ever choose to come here of my own volition. There are much better places in Milford, New Haven, and Fairfield to drink, watch live music, hang out with friends, pick up girls, etc.
