So after circling the block 5 times and almost giving up, we found Dan's. There sign must be missing, but my guess is that they have a serious following and its more word of mouth.

I walked in and I don't know where to start. They have smoked turkey wings, baked chicken, smothered chicken, and all types of goodies. I ask the older woman behind the counter were the greens made with meat and she said "baby, i only use turkey in my greens." I am in heaven! Then I asked was her cornbread made with meat and she said no! Cha-ching! Now you non-soul food eaters may be asking what's up with all the questions. A lot of soul food cooks use pork in everything and I don't eat it. As times are changing so are people's "seasoners" and they are opting for turkey which is awesome!

My friend and I opted for the smothered chicken with cornbread, greens (made with smoked turkey), and mac n cheese. Now my friend originally wanted the short ribs, but she said she sold the last one right before he arrived. While some may feel jaded by this, I think its pretty awesome that you sell out of food because it says:
    A) I cook based on need
    B) Your food will always be fresh

Now that means you have to get here a bit earlier to ensure you get your favorites. Now what sucked is that if you do get there closer to closing, they may have to make your dish from super scratch. We had to wait 20+ minutes on our food, which is fine because its fresh, but when everyone who comes after you leaves before you, it can be a bit of downer. What's that mean for you -- don't go there starving. Just right before starving!

Food review: The greens were fantastic. The cornbread with homemade cranberry sauce was tastttttty! The mac was okay and the chicken could have been spiced more, but all in all.. a tasty meal at a good price!

Definitely going back. I don't live anywhere near this place, but I sure wish I did. My husband and I were in the area today and had lunch here. Baked chicken (moist, yum), collard greens (best ever), black-eyed peas (good - high praise considering Wallace's in Garfield Park has ruined all other BEPs for me), cornbread stuffing. Heaven. We sat at the table looking at the remains of our meal for a few minutes and talking about how we wished there was somewhere to lie down for a nap right then.

The staff were exceptional - friendly, welcoming - and the food so so good. Maybe it's an unfair stipulation, but 5 stars if they can make their BEPs like Wallace's.

Get yourself down to Dan's Soul Food & Bakery. We decided to eat there because it was close to a veggie-friendly restaurant that we were looking for; that place had closed, so we walked a few storefronts to Dan's. This place is nearly perfect. I had sides of lima beans (terrific), green beans (very good), greens (terrific), and cornbread stuffing (a few bites for me the rest for David (husband) because I was saving carbs for dessert--but absolutely excellent. Glad I did because banana pudding, complete with a Nilla wafer on top has made my list of foods David should feed me when I'm in the nursing home and can't feed myself. They've got cobblers and cakes too. David had catfish and red beans & rice and greens. Also on the menu that night were baked chicken and turkey legs. They also have pot roast and roast beef and bunch of other things that meat eaters like.

Melvin, the cook and our waiter, gave us extra cornbread when I told him I was going to wrap up our extras in a napkin to eat for breakfast.  We were the only folks in the place most of the time (coming back from Midway around 5:30pm on Friday) but Melvin and a woman working there were setting up for a 9pm buffet, so the place must have a (micro)-local following. Even if the place had been busier, I get the feeling that the service would have been as kind and friendly as it was when we were there. Melvin learned how to do all the cooking from the previous owner, and he clearly knows what he is doing. This place is a gem and you should check it out today.
