I came in here with a few friends while visiting to get out of the torrential downpour! Â They had a nice selection of good beers, the bar was cute and the service was good. Â I didn't eat anything, but it was a good experience overall. Â I'd definitely come back and try out the food, next time!
Review Source:Terrible service. My office went here for a team lunch on a week day and it took 2 hours to get our food. Maybe this would be acceptable if they were slammed, but he were the first people in the restaurant that day. We even got a parking ticket because it took forever and two people left before the food even came to go back for meetings. The waitress offered no apology despite our complaints and just shimmied her boobs around innocently.
The food is fine, if you don't mind the small portions. Personally not going back, ever.
Met up for dinner with an old friend, Amanda. The place was dead when we showed up for dinner on a Tuesday night at 6pm, but we were not deterred. A nice round of german beers (and a hard cider for me) to start the meal, along with appetizers of Schnitz on a Stick and Kasespatzle were perfect for sharing, and damn tasty.
For entrees, we all had the schnitzel--how could you not? I had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was a big portion, nicely breaded with a light lemon caper flavor. The side of grilled asparagus was fantastic and much better than expected. Tom had the Schnitzel vom Schwein, complete with the runny egg on top and a side of spicy fries--get this, they were actually spicy! Amanda had the Jäger "Hunter" Schnitzel--she also had the egg on top and she mentioned that the mushroom gravy was delish.
Perfect place to eat, drink and catch up on old times. Here's to the next one!
I didn't have high hopes for this place since I'm a vegetarian AND I don't drink. Â But I was here to hang out with friends (my meat-eating friends, just to clarify), so really my main goal was just to find one thing on the menu I could actually eat so I wouldn't starve for the rest of the evening.
There might not be a ton of vegetarian selections on the menu, but the penne and cheese might just be the BEST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN. Â Sooooo good. Â You MUST try it. Â I wish I could get the recipe so I could make it for myself. Â Or nevermind... I'd never make it. Â I'm too lazy to cook these days. ;)
Yesssssss. German beer.
Ok, so maybe I was a little let down that there weren't any "true" German people working the bar, but oh well.
The beer was fantastic and the food even better. I had the bratwurst sandwich, an American twist, yes I know. However, it was still simple and mouth-watering. The bread was crunchy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside goodness, the bratwurst heavenly, the onions and peppers seasoned perfectly.
GO HERE. SERIOUSLY.
My son was checking out UVM and we decided to try Das Bierhaus. We found it on Yelp. My son had spent a year living with a host family in Germany on an exchange program and he really missed the food. Â He was not disappointed!
We all loved everything. Â All of us had the schnitzel with different sides which included; potato salad, spatzel and red cabbage. Unbelievable. Â The German beer was out of this world.
The owner came out and greeted us after our meal. Â As both my son and he had been in the same areas when they lived in europe, we spoke for some time, which truly completed our great experience. He said everything is made from scratch. Its evident.
Our waitress was super. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. Â It was expensive, but I will definitely be dining there on my next visit to Burlington.
We headed to Vermont for a weekend away. Â We got to Burlington around 3:30 and were starving! Â Our first choice wasn't serving food until 5. Â We stumbled upon Das Bierhaus right before it began to pour. Â A small place (with roof seating, but since it was pouring, we didn't get a chance to check it out) with a very friendly staff. Â We tried a cheese pretzel. Â I got a small sized mac and cheese (so good!) and my husband ordered bratwurst and sauerkraut. Â He loved the food, but loved the beer choices more!
Review Source:Had an amazing surprise when our rain-drenched group stumbled into this place. The very helpful staff got us situated quickly. We originally planned to stay for just one beer to wait out the rain, and ended up staying for a good 3 hours and enjoyed the food, atmosphere and of coarse, brews.
Food was great - had the cheese pretzel with a wonderful mustard to start and had the Jäger Sandwich to eat. Will definitely come back for a proper Bierhaus Schnitzel next time I'm in Burlington, it looked amazing. The 5 of us split the apple fritters for dessert, and mopped up the plate.
Bottom line, the food was well prepared, authentic - at least to if my memory serves me (I've been to Germany and Austria a few times) - and the beer selection was great. Atmosphere was simple, and not overdone in a cheesy theme park way. And our waitress was excellent! There was a live band on the second floor, and the roof top is indeed awesome!
I have been here twice in one day. Â I feel that says enough about a restaurant, but I'll review it anyway. Â I came here for the first time last February, right after they had just opened. Â The second floor bar area was all they had open, and it served its purpose as a sanctuary from the Vermont cold. Â Maybe I'm just a nerd, but check out the monitor behind the bar. Â It's pretty.
Das Bierhaus serves Austrian, Swiss, and German food, with German beers on tap. Â They get their ingredients from local sources. Â You're in Vermont, get the cheese platter.
When I came here last summer, they had the roof, first and second floor, and an area in the front all open and packed with people. Â We split the cheese plate, and I got the Yager Schnitzel with a side of sauerkraut. Â All were excellent, but made my buddy decide he's bringing his own tent next time.
I just came here again a couple weeks ago. Â When we showed up about fifteen minutes before opening, there was already a line of people waiting to get in. Â We enjoyed a few beers, and I have no complaints about the cleanliness of the taplines or the quality of service. Â We returned later in the afternoon for a few more beers, and made our way up to the roof. Â It's a nice, shaded area where you can enjoy the weather.
All of us tried the pretzels this time. Â When asked how we wanted them, one of the guys at the table next to us proclaimed "Cheese! Â Get the cheese." Â So, we got the cheese. Â It's a big, soft pretzel with cheese melted all over it. Â Really, you can't go wrong there.
I've been to Das Bierhaus four or five times now, and I'm always pleased. Â It has become a must-stop when I go up to Burlington. Â Get into it.
The beer selection is pretty good with lots of good German beers on tap and in bottles that you really can't get anywhere else in town, so that's sort of a nice break from your usual VT lineup (not that those aren't awesome). They also have plenty of good stuff from other countries in bottles. My main problem with the place is that the prices tend to lean towards the outrageous side.
The ambiance is kind of awful. I think they were going for that stereotypical Bavarian thing, but instead it looks like German small-town dive bar in a bad way.
I would have given this place 2 stars if not for a big redeeming factor: a sweet rooftop terrace. It's awesome up there on a hot summer night!
Das war köstlich! We had a great time at Das Bierhaus tonight. It was a nice change from the typical food found on Church street and the service was top notch. The theme is authentic German food and the waitresses even dress in traditional dirndls. The menu has a variety of portion sizes to fit your appetite. The soft Bavarian pretzels was a great starter. You can choose from: traditional, cheese, chocolate, and cinnamon; you also get a trio of dipping sauces: honey, spicy mustard, and cheese. My favorite combination was the traditional with the spicy mustard.
For entrees, I tried the Jäger "Hunter" schnitzel with sauerkraut and the best wurst sausage combination. My previous experiences with schnitzel have all turned up soggy and overdone, but this pounded pork loin was perfectly pan-fried and crispy throughout. The mushroom gravy was too salty so the Schnitzel vom Schwei probably would have been a better choice. The sausages all tasted too similar for me to appreciate their subtle differences. The big winner was the curry sauce that came with it. I completely agree that it's "better than the Indian food available."
Of course, no German meal would be complete without an authentic draft. If you love Hefeweizens as much as I do, the Weihenstephan Hefeweis is a must-try.
The food was ok to good, but very un-authenic; except the beer.
The currywust, was good, but was nothing like real currywurst.
The pretzel, was good, almost authentic, but there was somethign off about the crust.
The Spätzle tasted quite ok, but it had too much cheese and had the wrong shape.
THe apple Fritter, was ot traditional, and was mostly fried dough and not enough apples.
The beer was good, which is the most important. I would not recomend for dinner, but definately a very good place to get a pretzel and a beer.
We had an absolutely awesome meal of pretzels and sausages (the best wurst sampler is the way to go). The sauerkraut was authentically German, while the sausages were a delightful spectrum of the tube formed meat. Excellent service and beer recommendations from Ashley, who was an absolutely great waitress during our lunch.
If you are on your way to Montreal or other places near Burlington VT, this is definitely a go-to lunch or dinner recommendation.
Exceptional gausthaus/bierhaus!
A very brand new and well constructed building. They captured the ambience and motif of a Bavarian Gausthaus setting perfectly. Excellent Selection of over 10 German beers on tap.
I had the jagrschnitzel mit pommes which was very good. Large portions. Would have liked more mushrooms in the sauce but that's me. The sauce seemed different maybe hint of red wine? The variant here was seasoned fries versus plain ones. Great taste and they added to the meal. The haus salad was very good, fresh and interesting with the cranberries and nuts. Â The chicken on a stick was fried but good - their take on German chicken nuggets. The curry ketchup is excellent. Great taste with a little bite to it.
We definitely will be back!!! Definitely a repeat place for us!!
We want to try the Bier Garten out.
Awesome place! This is great if you are looking for something out of the ordinary. It is German as the name suggests, which means the food is prepared differently than normal. The sauerkraut is more authentic tasting and is not the stuff you get out of the can.
The place is a little cramped, but the wait staff is great. Due to the size of the space it can get loud in there.
The dishes that were order in our party were Sauerbraten, der Rueben, Jager Burger with appetizers of sauerkraut and penne and cheese. Rave reviews by everyone at the table for all the dishes. The sauerkraut was the most unexpected because it wasn't the same taste as we are used to. It has more of a licorice taste to it.
The portions were all good size. If you order the noodles as a side, they are almost bland but have subtle taste that is quite good. The fries are tasty, but kind of standard. The Sauerbraten tastes closer to sweedish meatballs than pot roast. For dessert, the apple fritters and chocolate mousse were both great.
I am not a beer connoisseur, but they have quite the selection and I'm told they were good.
I highly recommend this place if you like this style of food.
Das Bierhaus sehr gut!
Spent some time up on the rooftop beer garden, 4 different 1/2 liter specials less than $5 a piece, then moseyed down to the air conditioned 2nd floor bar for a few colder ones. Â
The beer is just plain fantastic. Fresh and sharp helles from more than one producer, dunkels, bocks, a couple of hefeweizen, a dunkelweizen?, and kolsch served in .3,.4, and .5L sizes. Thats just the drafts, there's a cooler full of bottle imports too.
I enjoyed my Bauernwurst, with a slight smokey spice and sourkraut (the caraway seeds are an inspired choice), much more than the schnitzel.
My veal was tasty, but the super thin cut was a bit overcooked. Â My wife's order of Schnitzel von Schwein was too overdone to enjoy. Â She was glad to have started with a picture perfect hot and salty pretzel.
Good stuff, served by a very friendly, and hard working staff. Â Its 3 stories from Kitchen to Rooftop service, we didn't see a dumbwaiter. The dirndls are a bit much, but I appreciate the effort.
This place is ok. Not great, not terrible.
This was our last stop on a pub crawl of Burlington so I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by the atmosphere and clientele after hitting some more creative spots.
They have a biergarten upstairs which was nice, even in the rain! (It's covered.)
I guess when I come to a place like Burlington, I was local all the way. But if you are craving some tasty German imports, I'd recommend this place for sure!
I cannot say enough good things about this place.
I was in Burlington for a little weekend getaway and I had stumbled on a review for Das Bierhas on, you guessed it, Yelp! (Thanks Yelpers!) I saw the reviews on the beer selection and knew I had to make it to this spot.
We walked in and it was... empty. Granted it was only 6:30 pm, but we were excited to see open seats at the three person bar.It is't right on Church street which keeps some tourists from stumbling upon it. We sat down and were immediately greeted by the owner. He talked to us a little bit about the menu and reviewed the beer list. The beer list changes based on the time of year and also on what is available but the options are impressive. Both the owner and our waitress (in full st. pauli gear) were extremely knowledgeable about the beers and made excellent recommendations (Schneider Aventinus... I will forever be grateful for that find!)
I thought we were just going in for a a quick drink and we ended up staying at the bar for over three hours. With great beer and a friendly staff, what else do you need?
If you're looking for a place to bring a group for dinner or just to throw back some of the best bier on Church Street- you'll love this place. Â But if you're looking to mingle with the coeds and hear music blasting- you'll be disappointed.
Impressive beer list without gauging you at the wallet. Â Definitely a great bar to relax at.
I've eaten here a few times. The first was one of the preview nights - big wait time/service issues, but delicious food & great beer. The second, the food was mediocre (maybe because I didn't drink as much this time?). The third, we sat in the dining room - my order was wrong and my schnitzel, when it did arrive, was underseasoned to the point that I would have preferred a McNugget. We ordered quite a sampling from the menu and the only things that weren't completely bland & boring were my fiancee's currywurst & the pretzel we shared. Gotta love those pretzels. Anyway, in the future, I'm going to think of this more as a bar that happens to have some snacks than as a restaurant, since eating there sober has been a disappointment.
Review Source:I'm really excited that I finally came here for dinner last night. I had previously enjoyed some delicious beers on the roof top biergarten on a sunny afternoon last summer. (And can't wait to do it again!)
I'm not familiar with German food and probably have only had it once before a long time ago. That said, I was looking forward to trying something new and really getting into it. The waitress was super helpful in giving advice and answering any questions we had. She also offered us the beer special of the night - 3 dollar medium sizes of the top 2 beers on the beer list. Aaaaaaamazing. Super crisp and smooth. One of them was the Spaten and I wish I remembered what the other one was.
I ordered the Jager Sandwich with the Haus Salad. A pork schnitzel with rye bread, open faced with gravy and some other warm goodness. This is not something I would usually EVER order.. but like I said, I was ready to go full boat German and get into something outside of my usual. I'm so glad I did! It was delicious. I made a good move on having the Haus Salad with it to lighten the load and get my greens in. One sweet thing to remember... the menu said that all sandwiches are 1/2 off on Thursdays!
My friend had the Jager burger (VT Boyden Valley beef  w/ a fried egg on top!) with seasoned pommes (fries). I tried the pommes and they were tasty. He raved about his burger and was feeling the full protein of the meal afterward.
Just to get our digestive tract in check... it was a call for some lacto-fermentation. The sauerkraut was enjoyable and had what looked like caraway seeds in it. Cheers to sauerkraut.
On top of the out of ordinary eating experience for me and awesome beers...the icing on the schnitzel is the fact that Das Bierhaus makes everything homemade, to order, all sourced from local VT farms and bakeries...and of course everything was said to be super fresh and it definitely tasted it. Oh ya.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional food reviewer with a gifted palate, I'm a regular person who loves to eat.
The food is amazing. I absolutely love curry wurst and was happy to find it on their menu. I was even happier when I tasted it. It's different from other curry wursts I've had in that this one was quite spicy. I don't care which is more authentic (spicy or not) but I loved the change from the usual that I have been eating.
The beers are great, not a huge selection but what they have is quite good. My only complaint really is the bartender. When we were there it seemed like he was just too cool to sit and answer a question or two about the place or the beers. It was not a busy night with the upstairs only being 1/3 full and the bottom completely closed so it would have been nice to have been welcomed into the space rather than ignored.
Nice German beerhaus / restaurant- we ate Kasespeatzle (excellent), Jaegerschnitzel (very good), regular Schnitzel (good) and red cabbage (very good) Dessert was a cinnamon pretzel (very good) and a cheese plate (OK). The beers were definitely tasty, the service was good and the prices were reasonable. Would for sure come here the next time I am in Burlington!
Review Source:Any place that serves Schneider Aventinus on tap gets a hearty pat on the back from me, and a return visit. Â Still, with a name like Das Bierhaus, you'd think they'd have a bigger tap list.
The atmosphere is a bit cheesy for my taste. Â Don't get me wrong, I love me some lederhosen. Â It's just a bit over the top. Â I wish they'd focus more on the food, and less on the, uh, atmosphere.
That said, Great Gods of Ground Meat, does this place have sausage. Â I think the sausage menu is bigger than the beer menu. Â The sauerkraut was ok - a wee bit bland, but hey, it's german food - and I suppose the mustard made up for it.
This place has weird hours - I keep stopping by and they're closed. Â Boo.
Get a seat on the deck upstairs if it's nice out.
According to their website, Das Bierhaus set out to recreate the atmosphere of the real Swiss and German bierstubes the owner went to growing up in Switzerland. While I have never been to Germany or Switzerland, I can certainly imagine myself as being there whenever I am at the Bierhaus. Their beer selection is top notch; they literally have every German beer that is legally available in Vermont, and the staff has a genuine passion for finding and sharing amazing beers. The bartenders actually take the time to find out your beer preferences and will not only give you a beer you'll love, they can explain the entire history and brewing process. They can also talk shop about homebrewing, as many (if not all) of them brew their own beer in their spare time.
Whether you are a veteran beer snob or a recent convert from the Natty Lite ranks, Das Bierhaus is a must visit when you're in Burlington.
The place had a "cheesy" atmosphere with the mixed German-English signage. Â The wait staff did not speak German either. Â Fortunately, those were the only negatives I could find with this place. Â The wait staff was friendly. Â There was also a very good selection of German-brand lagers and ales. The upstairs patio would definitely be a plus in the summer. Â
The food wasn't bad either.  We had bratwurst with sauerkraut and pretzels. All  were fairly authentic so I was quite happy.  Even the pretzel came piping hot.  I hope they maintain it this way.  Well, with the exception of those cheesy signs.
