I'm leaning towards a 3.5 star rating, but I'll be generous and round up.
This is a pretty good place to buy beer. Their selection is varied and stocked with a decent selection of local California beers as well as out of state. Maybe I'm just spoiled having come from San Diego, but I expected a wider array of rarer beers. Yes, they do indeed have some unique/hard to come by ones, but it just feels like something is missing. Still for the area this is about as good as you're going to find. The prices are reasonable as well.
Didn't really stay to drink beer, but I hear it gets crazy crowded.
I read someone else's review and I think they summed it up best as, "A great place to buy beer, but not an outstanding one." Still if I was in the area I'd check it out again. For now though my go to store will remain City Beer Store in SF.
Five stars. The name says it all.
PROS: Â Daily rotating pours, super-knowledgeable folks, HUGE selection of beers to buy and try there or take home with you. The "store" part at the back is like all of the good parts of the Bevmo beer section, but with more beers. Clientele is super-diverse and really chill.
CONS: Occasional "too cool" employee interactions, small seating area (which could also be a "pro," depending on whether you can get a seat!
Really the beer nerd capital of Davis. A+.
My turn to do a 5 star review of this place!
As you have read, this place is small and does fill up during peak drinking times. Best to go on a random weekday, maybe right after work (you're free to grab dinner someplace and eat it here too!), and sample their tasting flight (only available from 4-9pm) or grab a beer on tap. I'm a SUPER lightweight drinker but thankfully they will sell you a half pour :)
Like them on FB to see what tasting flight is available for the day as well as their beers on tap.
They have SOOOO many beers in the back available for purchase. For $1 more you can drink it there. They do carry beers that are harder to find and the employees really know their stuff and can suggest a good one to try out.
If you love beer you definitely need to go here. Â The Davis Beer Shoppe has an incredible selection of beers. Â The shop itself is not very large, but they do a lot with the space they have. Â The staff wears nice collared shirts and ties and, that in itself does a lot to add to the atmosphere. Â Barrels for tables and other beer paraphernalia on the walls makes this a great place to enjoy a quality beer. Â
The imported beer selection was impressive, and they also carry a wide variety of rare and random microbrews. Â If you can't find it at Bev Mo or Total Wine, check the Davis Beer Shoppe, you might be surprised. Â
Amazing beers on tap and even more amazing beers in bottles.
If you love beer, you definitely need to go here.
We were in Davis for their Picnic day. Originally, we wanted to try Cafe Bernardo to get a wiki whacky woo but it was too crowded with overly drunk people.
Mellow it out at Davis Beer Shoppe! We came and there was a slight wait, not too bad. We ordered our beers quick. First round of bottled allagash white. Second round the tangerine wheat on tap. I just have to rave at how good it was. Amazing. Tangy. Light. Seriously it was the perfect beer that day. We wanted another round but it was out! So sad. There is a lot standing room and some sitting. Just enjoy it, chill out with friends. Ask to try the beers since they have quite a selection. Another plus, the prices were unbeatable. Super cheap. Compared to beer down here... totally baffled me. The people were nice and friendly, we were able to watch game one of the Warriors and strike up a conversation with the people next to us. Very chill.
-Give it a try! It is a must if you like beer.
Let me preface this review by saying that I am not at all a fan of beer. I really cannot stand it. But then, you walk into this quaint little beer shoppe in the middle of Davis, which is honestly a city that I don't understand, and you think to yourself, oh, wait, this is not what I was expecting.
You come up this little ramp/walkway thing, and are met by this HUGE bar that has all these signs and board above it advertising the beer that they sell. Looking to the left, just past the bar, you also see rows upon rows of different yummy looking drinks to taste. On the right you see cute seating with an interesting mix of people followed by a large window that looks onto the streets of Davis
However, there is something here for everyone, including a LARGE selection of cider just for me! I absolutely loved whatever the cider was that I got, and the bartender guy was so great at helping me choose just the right one! Definitely come here if you get a chance, because it's super chill and you are sure to have a nice time!
A great little beer place, a must stop for visitors to Davis and a great hang out for residents. Â
Even though they don't have food, there are plenty of food places nearby to order food to bring in. Â It is small, so there is a possibility it could be at capacity but so worth the wait if need be. Â
Wonderful beer selection, friendly and knowledgable staff! Â
The fact that they carry beer from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR and Stone Brewing Co in Escondido, CA is what prompted me to do this review and rave about it!
My brother, who lives in Davis took me here when I was in town visiting. This place has a lot of positive reviews but I find some aspects of it majorly lacking. First off, the tasting room is extremely small. Most of the footage is taken up by the beer store, of which I saw maybe all of 3 people buy beer to take home. It's obvious people come here for the tasty $4 beers on tap. The other thing that bothered me was that you can't buy the beer that's being offered on tap. For instance I tried a really nice porter called Campfire, when I asked if they sold the beer they said "no." My brother said that this normal as he's asked to buy other beers he's sampled on tap. What kind of business model is that? They would have made more money off me if they stocked that beer but instead I left spending only $15. So basically you have a small beer tasting room and a large beer grocery store and in no way are the two related.
Review Source:Coolest booze joint in Davis. The Beer Shoppe is like the Vini of beer; this is the place to be if you're looking to experiment with different brews or to become a beer connoisseur.
With the tasting room up front and a beer shop in the back, this is what beer heaven should be. You can find brews from all over the world here, so perhaps it's time to wean yourself off the Keystone and Natural, no?
Don't be afraid to taste different brews and ask questions to find out what you like. A beer flight is a good way to start your brew adventure! I'm still learning about different brews myself, so I won't give any recommendations I may regret later.
The place gets VERY crowded, very quickly. Get there early and reserve a beer keg table for you and your friends. The Beer Shoppe also allows outside foods, so ordering a couple of pies from Woodstock's may be a capital late-night munchie idea.
Good place to go to pickup any beer, or if you have a special beer in mind that you cant find everywhere. I would ask for help locating a specific brand on their wall o' beer because I havent figured out the schematic yet and it might take you a while. They also have beers on tap, which I think change frequently, and its a nice cozy spot to sit and drink some good beer and play cards with your friends. Its small though, so if it is busy you might not get a table or may even have to wait in line outside for someone to come out. Good beers from here: Seadog blueberry beer, or Wells banana bread beer. nom. Nice addition to Davis.
Review Source:This is a good change of pace from the typical bars in Davis. Crowd is a bit older, atmosphere is cozy, and the beer selection is awesome. It does tend to get a little crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but you don't feel sweaty or annoyed being crammed inside.
Great place to go if you want to chat and enjoy a good brew. Prices are decent, and staff is friendly and willing to talk you through the selection and help you pick what you want.
Great addition to the Davis scene!
It's a beer place with lots of beers, but they're mostly bottled. They pretty much just uncap it pour it for you. For some reason I thought they had a lot more on tap.
----- I started with a Santa's Little Helper. It's like a super black expresso beer. So black the foam was black.
----- Second drink, I grabbed a.. (oh god, what was it called?) beer that tasted exactly like a blueberry muffin! I'm sure if you asked the bartender, they'll know exactly what it is. It was very cool tasting. *EDIT* It's called a Sea Dog!
----- I also had sips of their beer sampler (comes with 5 shots of different beers) and they were pretty disgusting imo.
All the beers that I grabbed were in the $4 range.
CON: Good luck grabbing a table here
PRO: They allow food. Beer + Woodstocks' Pizza = HEAVEN, basic math.
Finally! A place in Davis where they have a wide and great selection of beers for a good price! The majority of place in Davis have just bars and clubs where everyone's mission is to get chocolate wasted and see where the night goes. So a bar that is more of a "kick back and relax" place is nice to have.
There is very selective seating (maybe 20 people at a time max), but it's well worth the wait.
They have a ridiculously huge beer selection! Their customer service is great! They have a vast knowledge of their alcohol which is nice. I just tell them what kind of beer i'm into and they'll give me something totally different and great. For about $7-8 Â you can get 5 2 oz samplers which i think is a steal.
This is a must his spot if you're ever in Davis and I would recommend this place to anyone! Cheers!
This place rocks! Too bad that it caters to only a few since their capacity is small. One has to wait in a long line just to get in. The clear glass wall doesn't help suppress your drools and cravings for beer.
I had a great time when I first visited Davis Beer Shoppe. Excellent customer service. It was past 10pm when we arrived and we informed the cashier that it was my first time to be there, and tasting their different brews was my infinite plan. However, I was not aware that they had a time limit for tasting, and that was at 9pm. But, they stretched out their greatness with me and tried very hard to get me one set of tasting. It was all about chocolate and beer! I was so happy with their Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Caldera Mogli. Yum yum yum!
Unfortunately, they do not sell food to go with their liquor. One could bring in anything edible bought outside though. Luckily, we just ate so it was all good.
I highly recommend that you try this place if you haven't. I would definitely come back for more.
Davis Beer Shoppe is the perfect post-i-had-a-long-day-at-work-and-i-just-wanna-Âsip-on-a-drink-with-my-friends joint. Â
They have a vast variety of beers and ciders to choose from for people that enjoy the dark and dirtayy and for those that can't handle their drank. Â For around 6 to 7 bucks you can get a flight of beer to taste which includes 5 4oz(?) tastings of different flavors that they're currently showcasing. Â You can also order beers on tap and they'll let you sample them if you're not sure what you want to order. Â
The staff here are really helpful and are very quick to come around and clean up your table when you've emptied your glasses. Â I love the decor of this place- it has an old school kinda feel to it which i absolutely adore. Â
The only downside of this place is that it's very small which limits the amount of people that can be in at one time. Â It gets crowded fairly often so don't be surprised if you have to wait outside for a bit before you get to go in. Â Besides that, Davis Beer Shoppe is a great place to go check out. Definitely a great new addition to downtown Davis!
I am so glad Davis has a place like this now. It is like a dream come true.
The Davis Beer Shoppe was introduced after I graduated, so all of my experiences here has been as an alum. It is a beautifully simple setup of a small group of tables, and a hall of beer. What I think I like the most about this place is the incredible selection and the always interesting list of beers on tap.
This is a MUST GO TO for beer lovers.
Only the Davis Co-Op will have a bottle selection that can rival The Davis Beer Shoppe.
The last time I was there I also got a flight of some very interesting beers that were poured from bottles... weird... the bottles were open and left open in the refrigerators waiting for the next person to order a flight. Still delicious, but would have liked to not had beer that may have been opened several hours ago.
A great place to drink good beer with some friends. They have a large selection and the service is great...they are great at suggesting beers that you might like. They also let you try a sample of the beers on tap.
Downside is that the place is really small and gets really crowded. They are strict in seating and do not let others in after capacity has been reached. You actually stand in line outside and wait for others to come out.
If you can find a place to stand or sit, I recommend you check it out.
TIP: take a deck of cards to play with!
Not too shabby.
The hubs and I walked in for a quick browse of the beer selection on the shelves. My hubs was droooooling. I'm prego, so beer is out of the question. The atmosphere was nice. Very laid back and chill. Seating is limited though. I heard a guy asking when the next table would be opened. I don't think for a while, homes. Everyone there looked pretty comfy.
I'll come back again to have a drink when my kiddo is outto.
LOVE their daily tastings: 4-9pm every day, with rotating themes, posted on their FB page wall. They have some really cool themes, for example, foreign ciders was yesterdays' and light fruity beers is today's. Yum! Like others have said, HUGE selection and great bartenders who can recommend different beers. There's the "tasting room" and a whole back area with beers you can buy to-go, or pay $1 to drink at the Shoppe.
Unfortunately, seating is really limited; I really wish they could get more chairs, more tables, and more room, because it's really annoying purchasing a drink and having nowhere to sit and talk with your friends (even though they're not technically at capacity). If they could somehow get more room, a lot more people would stop by. Also, some of their beers are slightly overpriced, especially because you can get them at supermarkets for much cheaper. They do have some rarer, hard to find beers, which are definitely worth the price.
This is one of the best places in Davis to get a variety of beer. Came here with some friends during the week, great environment nice selection of beer and cider. I order some raspberry cider, although I didn't know what the name of the beer was. The bartender/server were really knowledgeable about their selection of different types of alcohol. Just asked they what you want , and they'll be able to help you find a suitable alcohol for you!
The only thing I didn't like was that the shop itself is pretty same. There isn't outdoor seating and the constricted area they make you stand or sit is quite small. So its hard for a large group of people to hangout there, unless you're under 4 people. Nice little shoppe, great selection, great service. DEFINITELY need to stop by.
Came here with a study buddy on a Sunday and we managed to snag a lovely table. Whipped out our laptop and IPads to work on papers while sipping on some nice hard apple and raspberry cider - all while not getting buzzed or drunk. I briefly spoke to the bartender about how I wanted something on par with YardHouse's hard raspberry cider and he hooked me up with something super close, if not better than YardHouse's hard cider! Unfortunately, though, I forgot the brandname of the ciders we got, but it was super affordable. Less than 3$ a bottle!
This place is super cute, although a tad small. There are barrels that serve as mini tables to put your drinks on.
So many different beer and cider selections, its like a library full of them! Definitely a notable favorite and gonna come back soon.
Faddy's favorite place in town really....So I am dragged to this establishment time and time again, but I am very happy to oblige since it is such a wonderful place! The only unique Beer Shoppe in Davis! I salute you
Drinks: A-
Based on Framboise Lambic Beer Apple-flavored. I am by no means a beer expert or even a beer novice! However Faddy is a beer connoisseur and this is by far, his favorite place in Davis. He always visits this shop every time he visits me haha. I like fruity alcohol drinks so he recommended me to try the Framboise. I really like the bubbly, fruity taste but over time, the taste cumulative became too bitter. Faddy really liked his Stone Ruination IPA as usual. Overall, the Beer Shoppe as Yelpers have mentioned have a plethora of beer choices for all the beers lovers! Even a novice like me was able to gulp something tasty down.
Service: A
Love LOVE the staff's uniforms! It is very professional and cute at the same time. Besides their swag attire, their customer service has been excellent. Every visit, they have been very accommodating and helpful. I was able to switch around some beers I was buying for Faddy and they allowed me to do so for a 6-pack! Although their policy for in-out entries is unfortunate, they're really friendly about bouncing the shop.
Location/Ambiance: A-
Most unique shop in town easily! They have two sections inside the store- the retail side and the bar. The retail side is stocked with beer of course and above their fridge you can see all the different types of tap sticks and a cool, bottle-cap picture of a person from afar. The bar side however is too small and usually accounts for the waiting customers outside. Their overall store theme is antique, Euro fun! Lovely beer mug collections and historical paintings from different places- It's lovely to gaze at!
Prices: B-
Personally, I think the beer is too expensive but that's just me. Average prices can run $5+ for one drink so if you're a cheap college student, this isn't the place for you to stop by everyday. They take cash and credit!
TL;DR? Very beautiful Beer Shop with a large selection of hearty beers! GREAT service and decent prices! Love beer? Well why aren't you there yet?!
Interested in finding the beer for you but unsure of what to try? Â Then this definitely is the place for you! Â Many college students (and people in general) have the misconception that all beer tastes the same--oh how they are wrong! Â Beer is incredibly diverse, so there is definitely a beer for everyone. Â
Dozens of bottles of delicious beer line the walls in the back of the Davis Beer Shoppe, and they also offer a great variety on tap. Â The servers know their stuff and are incredibly friendly and helpful so if you need some guidance on finding the right one for you, shoot them a couple questions and they'd be happy to help you. Â The service here is great, the beer is plentiful, and the prices won't break the bank. Â
One downside to this place--it's too small! Â It's always so crowded that sometimes it's even hard to find a place to stand by the counter, let alone a place to sit. Â Can't complain too much though! Â Despite the occasional overcrowding in the place, The Davis Beer Shoppe is definitely a great spot to hang out and sample different beers with friends.
This is my favorite spot in Davis! Â Great for beer enthusiasts! The atmosphere is lively and fun. Â The people are down-to-earth. Â No need to dress up in fancy high heels and tight skirts here, folks.
I recommend getting the Rasputin on tap if you like dark beer! Â Very smooth and delicious.
Con: Â The place is rather small, so seating is very limited. Â You'll be waiting in line outside around 9-10PM on Thurs and Fri night. Â Once you get in, you'll be glad that it is a small place because there is a charm to its size.
Great place, GREAT beer, fun and relaxed ambiance. Not overcrowded like many places can get most of the time, and it's great they allow you to bring food in, since they don't have any hot food items themselves.
The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because there is a huge lack of seating (10-20 person seating, only a handful more standing space) so the competition for seats and even entrance can get annoying at times. You have to know the right time to go.
Where SF has City Beer Store and Oakland has Beer Rev, Davis now has Beer Shoppe. Â I like that they have a daily tasting flight, a clearly labeled menu board, and updated tap listings on their Facebook page. Â They're really churning out the beer snobs young! Â You lucky fcks. Â
Maybe it's because St. Patty's is around the corner, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of the Celtic music blaring loudly overhead. Â The decor is a little tacky, but there were plenty of people congregating, having a libatious good time. Â If they're able to obtain some outdoor seating, they'd be golden.
Nothing is more beautiful than a dedicated store for beer! Â Although this establishment isn't super big, there's a fairly good selection of beer inside. Â I purchased a few beers for friends including a Marin Brewing Company beer, a JK hard cider, and the Yulesmith brew from San Diego based Alesmith. Â The decor is very basic with the store/refrigeration area in the back and the "bar" area in the front. Â Initially, I had no idea how the beer was organized...whether by type or name, but either way, just the exploration of the different types there made it an enjoyable experience.
Looking forward to coming back here for a drink when I'm back in town!
First the good - The service is friendly and prompt. The beers are numerous and high end, even have a wide selection of sours and other hard to find brews; really terrific. While they don't sell food they do allow you to being in food from outside. That's almost unheard of!
Now the bad - good luck getting in at anytime other than the middle of the afternoon. Â Really, I'm a huge fan but with the university in town forget going when school is in any night of the week. Â The place is unbelievable undersized. They could expand to the businesses on both sides and still be busy. Apart from the fact that you can't get in when they are at capacity you can't even get in to the retail portion to buy a bottle to take home - that's unforgivable. Â I'm sure the city code dictates how many people can come in but they have to address that soon or risk continuing to piss off customers with $$ that want to buy the higher end products. I was prepared to drop about $60 on a few sour ales but they wouldn't let me in.
5 stars if you are lucky enough to get in;
0 stars if you are turned away.
