Guh. This is probably my favorite food establishment in Davis. EVERYTHING is amazing. I'm especially fond of all their brunch menu items (although I tend to stick with the eggs benedict that come with an awesome mustard hollandaise) and the bottomless mimosas that you can get for $10 a person. I really have nothing bad to say about anything on the menu - all of the burgers are fantastic (and you can get anything on a pretzel bun), fish and chips are super yummy, and shepherd's pie is perfect for when it's cold outside. It can get a bit crowded on weekend nights, but that's pretty typical of any bar. They also have a great selection of board games for you to play! Overall, it's just a super cozy place to either hang out with friends and drink, or enjoy food during the day.
Review Source:I'd love to give 3.5 stars! The brunch is very good and there is a bottomless mimosa option that is fun. The corned beef is good, as is the shepherds pie. The macaroni leaves something to be desired. Great place for pints of beer, but the wine pours are pretty short. The patio is great!
Review Source:This restaurant was super awesome!!!!!! Today was my first day visiting Davis, and my mom and I thought this place looked fun. The drinks were fabulous. We ordered a white russian, raspberry lemon drop, and a regular lemon drop, and they were all FANTASTIC! The raspberry lemon drop was my personal favorite :) For lunch we had Caesar salads and they were also terrific. The best part was the bread pudding............... TO DIE FOR!!!!!! My favorite dessert has always been creme' brule' , but this is now my favorite. I DEVOURED almost the entire plate, and selfishly I left my mom with very little. It was worth it!!! haha
When I start going to UC Davis I will without a doubt be back for more! I definitely recommend this place.
NOT HAVE AGAIN: the pepper crusted bistro filet was horrible. I've had pepper steak before and enjoyed it, but this filet was so potent with pepper I had to scrape off all of it and still it was too powerful. I would have asked the server to take it back but she never returned to ask how the food was. Plus, the three pieces were very small. I asked to servers for more butter, but never received it. The steak or service were worth 2 stars, but combined, I can only provide one star. Quite a different experience than my lunch visit.
HAVE AGAIN: the champ potatoes were very good.
I was here on Picnic Day this year, which was probably my first mistake...not being a Davis grad, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. Â I drove out from SF, parked at the hotel met my friends here at about 10am. Â By the time I got there, my friends were already a drink down, and had an Irish Coffee(which was fantastic by the way) waiting for me. Â 2 Irish Coffee's and 3 Jamo shots later, and the serving girl told us that her manager told her to make us slow down on the drink ordering. Â My friends were a bit muffed about it, but I though it was probably not a bad idea.
So, while we were waiting to get out of imposed drink Purgatory, we decided to order some food. Â I got the Irish Bacon Benedict, which was not the best Benedict Ive ever had, but pretty solid for pub-fare.
We also ended up here the next day because we were all craving some Irish Coffee's. Â They were pretty slammed when we got there and were out of coffee. Â Pretty disappointing.
I really want to love de Vere's. There's so much about it that is incredibly appealing to me! I do enjoy the charm and friendly environment they've created, it's a great spot to just grab a pint and relax with friends or coworkers.
What disappoints me every time is the food. For a pub, great drinking food is essential! I've tried a range of items on the menu, the stew, pub fries, fish and chips, and nachos. Some are pretty good, but for all of them, the portion is always tiny, especially at prices they're listed for. Unacceptable.
With their large range of beverages on tap and the free wi-fi combined with cozy booths, I'll most likely still be back. Hopefully I just remember to eat before coming here.
Update: I'm still not sold on the sizes of their dishes, but I recently had a great revelation. The mussels in the beer broth: GRAND. These are not your average mollusks, these come swimming in a heavenly beer broth with chunks of sausage and with crusty grilled bread.
I came here for a late dinner and ended up trying their traditional Irish stew. The stew wasn't very thick and it was more of a soup. The meat tasted fine and was semi-tender. It didn't really amaze me at all, but the dessert here was worth it. I ended up trying the crispy bread pudding. It was delicious and left me happy as I finished my meal.
Our waiter was very nice in helping my friends decide what drinks to get. They kept checking up on us to make sure we were enjoying our food and drinks.
I tried the happy hour special: a 1/2 order of fish-n-chips for $7 ($2 off the regular menu price): <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/de-veres-irish-pub-davis-2?select=1XLkue473SS80N3STWNOWw#CwEg-vtodfKdLXX4IjMwxA">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
OK flavor and coating. Â Not as good as the Irish Bank in SF.
The happy hour menu posted at the entrance is incorrect; they've removed some items.  This is the correct menu: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/de-veres-irish-pub-davis-2?select=1XLkue473SS80N3STWNOWw#bWXbBxFxj9Q2aQcLW4HtoA">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
The hot buttered pretzel was OK: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/de-veres-irish-pub-davis-2?select=1XLkue473SS80N3STWNOWw#oIwsnLmeyfX2eOtfRPIqWw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
I thoroughly enjoy this place! I'd say my friends and I have been here a few times, as a restaurant and as a bar.
We pretty much only get the fish and chips. I don't think I've personally ever gotten anything else. I went with a friend once and we got nachos as an appetizer - they were alright. The ciders are good here! I like them. They're big, but I don't think they do much. My friend likes the hefeweizen, it's pretty good! I like that too.
This place is pretty big, but it gets pretty crowded. I've always been able to get a table with my friends, so it's not really a problem. There's a library in the back with a shelf of games - play! Playing games whilst buzzed/drunk is so much fun. Taboo is surprisingly very entertaining when people are inebriated. Also, the Jenga set needs to be replaced, because there are only enough blocks to make half a tower. It's not very exciting.
I've only been here at night when I go out to the bars with friends. I love the atmosphere in here, since it looks and feels like an actual pub. There's plenty of seats, tables and booths available to sit inside as well as some tables outdoors. I feel like this is one of the better bars to hang out and just chill at.
As for drinks, I've tried the Aggie Lager (cheapest beer on the menu), and it was surprisingly good. They also do Irish Car Bombs here (Baileys/Guinness) which my friends and I find ourselves drinking from time to time here. Their cocktails are pretty good too. I feel like that they have the right balance between liquor and soda/juice. There are multiple bartenders here and they're really nice and professional. The prices are pretty cheap for beers.
I want to come back sometime for the bottomless mimosas on Sundays.
I am definitely a fan of de Vere's pub area. I like how spacious it its, and the different settings/tables/outside seating, and the games. It's large enough that you can go to hangout with a group, but you can also just stop by on your rounds of dt Davis. The bar is large enough to accommodate the crowd and the bartenders are always friendly. However, make sure you find a bartender you like and stick with them, because we've had two different ones make drinks two different ways, and that was not great.
Ive eaten here once with a group. The food was pretty good, but the portions were small for the price we paid. I was left a little hungry afterwards. Service was also not great, but there was only one server for the area, so it could have just been an understaffed night. I would be willing to go back for another try, but will most likely make it happy hour so it wont be so expensive for the amount of food we get.
The atmosphere is great. It feels like youre in a pub, but not a dirty pub.
Sadly I have never tried the food here yet. I've been here twice and it was during the night hours for bar hopping. I really enjoy Irish Car Bombs, so me and a few other of my friends decide to order a couple of Irish Car Bombs (a shot of Bailey's Irish Cream dropped in a cup of Guinness beer). I love it because I really enjoy the Baileys which is pretty smooth and tasty. I would definitely recommend that when going to De Vere's.
Hopefully I can get a chance to come back during the day for their food or maybe on Sundays when they have their endless mimosas :D
I absolutely love their fish and chips, esp with a Crispin cider!
Small- get 1 fish
Large - get 2 fish
Mac and cheese is super good!!!! However pretty expensive and pretty small.
Overall- great food, prices are expensive, portions are kind of small
15% off lunch!
Great place for dinner and to go out at night for the bars.
Not a fan of the extremely dim lights in certain areas of the room.
Came here on a Thursday evening for dinner and then Friday for a night of mingling.
For dinner I ordered the large stew for 16 bucks. While it tasted great, it was the smallest serving of stew i have ever had. This maybe because I was expecting a piping hot bucket since I was hungry, but at the time, I couldn't help think: I paid $16 for this? I am still hungry!!!
As far as my mingling experience, I have nothing to complain about. Loud pub with cool people all around. Doesn't really fit my style, as I like to dance when i go out, but definitely a good place to start the night.
We'd been going to the deVere's downtown since they opened a few years ago when we lived in Natomas. Â We've since moved to Davis and were excited to hear that they were expanding into our new neck of the woods. Â
Like the downtown deVere's, the atmosphere here in the Davis version varies greatly depending on the time of day that you go -- older, quieter clientele for lunch and afternoons into the earlier evening... then a more rollicking, younger crowd in the later eve. Â You will never feel uncomfortable, though as there are little corners to "escape" to if you wish. Â The Irish pub feel is nearly perfect given the size and flexible use needs of the place. Â We like sitting on the couches in the "library."
We've got kids now and our days of late night bar hopping are behind us, but we do like to sneak out for a pint in the late afternoon and early evening. Â Not sure if they do any trad out here in Davis, but we used to like heading to the downtown deVere's for that a couple years ago.
The beer and service are aces, but we've found the food to be hit and miss. Â I would stick with the fried pub fare. Â
We really like this place and are glad they're here in Davis. Â We'll be going back.
I really liked this place. My friends and I came here late night for drinks. I liked the environment and the bartender was really nice and helpful with drink recommendations. He was also really nice about trying to make us specialty drinks we wanted. I really liked that they specialized in whiskeys and such. Their Irish Coffee is delicious!! Definitely recommend trying it if you come here!
Review Source:Stopped in for dinner with the parentals and brother. Not impressed.
My chicken caesar salad consisted of lettuce, a few croutons, and several dry pieces of grilled chicken. Didn't try anyone else's entree. We ordered bread pudding for dessert. Out came something best described as sweet french toast--definitely not bread pudding.
Ambiance is good, I'd happily go back for a drink, but would skip if looking for a solid dinner.
I really enjoyed the food. Â Came here once with my parents, we had the Shepard's pie and turkey sandwich. Â Both were delicious and more than I could finish. Â The second time I came with friend for drinks and although much more expensive than most of the bars in the area, it was delicious.
The third time I was craving fish n chips and this was the only place open. Â They were delicious and combine that with an irish coffee, great meal. Â
The bouncers are always so nice and funny. Â Never rude. Really enjoy going there, worth the occasional splurge.
de Vere's is an Irish pub that stays open til 2 am everyday- in fact it is probably the only bar that is open til 2 am everyday in Davis!
Ive come numerous times to get drinks here and I highly recommend it. In fact if I was rating the bar alone, I would give it more than 3 starts. I finally tried the food for the first time and I was really disappointed. They dont have much on the menu and the service was really bad. We got seated quickly but there was only 1 server for the entire patio so that meant waiting a while for drink refills and to order our food!
I have heard that the trivia is fun so I will most likely be coming back for the happy hour and will definitely be coming out for the bar...not so much for dinner though.
I'm glad De Vere's found a home here in Davis. Â A good variety of beers and pub food - delish!
What we tried from the happy hour menu:
- fried pickle spears -- love, love, love!
- pretzel (comes with sausage, or portabello if you're vegetarian) -- warm and tasty, the dips are quite good
- pub fries -- yum! similar to poutine - cheesy, gravy-filled goodness on thick cut fries
- fish tacos -- was okay, would order again, but prefer the other items
- also has some healthier options like kale salad and smoked salmon plate
Great place to relax with friends when you don't feel like going all out at Ket or Tres. They offer a large selection of drinks, my favorite of which is the Crispin Cider. Their food is decently priced although you shouldn't expect too much. It's good pub food for when you've got a case of the drunchies.
It's can get pretty full on the weekends even though they have a lot of seating. A lot of people tend to just grab a drink at the bar and chat around that area but if you have a group of friends, try getting there a bit early to secure a table. There's also outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. The service gets a little scarce when it's a busy night and you may have to flag one of them down but they're friendly and prompt once you get their attention.
I've been to de Vere's countless times now and they've never failed to impress me. The food is awesome, but it's really their great service that makes me a loyal patron. I've always been greeted with smiles and treated with nothing but friendliness and respect.
things you must try:
- pub chips: Extremely salty/cheesy/greasy, PERFECT for a night of binge drinking. Highly recommended BEFORE getting plastered off Cafe Bernardo's evil Wiki.
- reuben sandwich: It's certainly a tough sandwich to eat in terms of texture, but the flavor is good. If you don't mind processed meat, the corned beef is yummy.
- FISH & CHIPS (+ a pint of Guinness): The fish is apparently shipped in fresh daily. Judging by the taste, I can't really argue with that. The dish is small & pricey, but nonetheless filling. At least for me it is. I tend to eat EVERYTHING, from the fish down to the veggie garnish, on the plate. You have the options of a half or full order. Don't be cheap: go with the full.
An aside: I LOVE fish & chips. But in Cowtown Davis, where is a girl to find good fish & chips, much less fresh fish?? When I found out that an Irish pub was coming to town, I couldn't shut up about fish & chips for weeks. My boo was so annoyed, he finally took me there to appease me. Good man! 'Cause now I'm in love with the fish & chips and won't stop talking about them still.
- Irish coffee: It's quite strong, but perfect for lounging around on their cushy seats and unwinding. If you want to drown away your sorrows from that god-awful o-chem exam, take their whiskey flight for a spin.
a little extra:
Free on Monday nights? Put your $30K UCD education to good use and try out Dr. Andy's Pub Quiz! It begins at 7pm and generally ends around 9pm (tallying up scores takes time, folks). Make sure you have no more than 5 buddies in your team.
So let me get this straight, de Vere's:
In a town full of quality burgers, you have the best.
(Made w/ Dubliner cheese, gimme more!)
In a town full of bars, you have the best.
(However you're keeping out undergrads, please keep it up! I greatly appreciate not feeling like an old lady in a town full of fake IDs and Forever 21 wardrobes!)
In a town full of brunches, you have the best.
(I've tried bits and pieces of the Fry Up, Corned Beef Hash, and the Irish Benedict dishes. All are awesome.)
So you've got all these things going for you, and instead of resting on your laurels, you decide to kick it up a notch? A really really really big notch?
(Two Words: BOTTOMLESS. MIMOSAS.)
Well then. Congratulations, de Vere's, you've cemented your place as my favorite joint in Davis. I love you!
