I checked this place out a week after Thanksgiving and it was packed latenight. Â GREAT beer choices that most other bars don't have. The bartenders were awesome and knowledgable. Â It was a comfortable atmosphere and even though it was past midnight, there weren't too many 20-somethings, probubly because there was no Bud light lol! Â I would go back.
Review Source:Don't treat The Dive, a bar that specializes in domestic craft beer, like a bar you would normally attend. Two reasons, an empty wallet, and a ripping hangover.
Those aside, use your time at The Dive to immerse yourself in a burgeoning world of hand-crafted, much sought after beers. The bartenders aren't simply there to attend to your drink orders, they actually want you to interact with the expansive list of mind-bending, tongue torquing brews. Ask a question, and they retort with a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. No idea what a Dopplebock is? They have a sample in front of you.
Flipped(somewhat) from an actual old, sketchy Worcester haunt, most of the decor rings true to the name. Simpsons pinball, jukebox, B-movies on the tiny televisions, and a back patio that always calls for "just one more."
Bottoms Up.
Very nice fun bar with a bit of a Worcester edge. They have a good beer selection, even though I am not a huge beer afficionado, and I really like the patio in the back. Low key, relaxed, people seem to be having a good time.
I like Armsby Abbey for the food but if you want to just chill and take a load off after a tough day, this is the place.
If you're not a beer drinker, then this is not the place for you. If you order a vodka based drink, you get a look from not only the bar tender but the rest of the people at the bar.
People rave about the outside courtyard but it's just a slab of concrete surrounded by a cheap fence.
If you are one of those people who knows more about beer than they should then you might like this place. If you're one of those people who know less than or equal to the average beer knowledge set then go to one of the many other bars in the area
One of the best bars in Worcester and probably my favorite bar. Â Is it a Dive? Â Yes and no. Â It's meant to seem like a dank and divey spot, not a place you'd want to be, but it's not. Â The beer selection is one of the best in the world. Â Yes. Â The world. Â Owned by the same guy who owns Armsby Abbey, the dive regularly features most of the same beers that Armsby does, and Armsby is officially ranked amongst the top bars in the world for beer selection, and so, the Dive deserves that distinction as well without any of the fanfair and press. Â The Dive deserves some more credit because it is the first bar in Worcester to really focus on craft beer; the Dive was serving craft beer when the Boynton was a dump and before any other bars started to catch on. Â So, give credit where credit is due.
Consistently great people at the Dive and a tremendous place to hang out. Â The Patio, during the warmer months, is great. Â Occasionally music is too loud. Â I'm getting old and can't put up with the live music at times. Â The 20" CRT televisions play either Roadhouse or a recurring video of a fire burning during the winter. Â
If you like Jose Murphy's or the Salty Dog, or places like that, then you probably won't like the Dive. Â This bar is dbag free. Oh, something to note, they don't serve Anheuser Busch, Miller brewing company, etc, etc., but also, no Sam Adams, Wachusett, Harpoon, Sierra Nevada, etc. Â There's nothing wrong with some of those brewers, but they just don't serve them, so if you're looking to get a budlight, summer shandy, or wachusett blueberry, go elsewhere. Â If you're going with friends and you're unsure what to get, tell the bartenders what you like and what you usually drink and they'll suggest something that should suit your palette. Â
The bathroom is tiny and dank and dirty, but it's what you expect. Â There's years of names carved onto the walls, ceiling, and everywhere. Â It's part of the experience.
No food, but you don't need it, Chris Gould's hot dog truck is outside, serving the only vegan hotdogs in Worcester if that's your fancy. Â Otherwise, beef hotdogs with mustard an onions are a fav.
Remember: Â Cash only.
Worcester's Dive Bar is a great place with a pseudo "divey" atmosphere betrayed by an excellent selection of craft beer and alarming lack of noisy drunks. Â
Inside, the Dive Bar does it's best to appear like it's namesake.  A single bar runs the length of the place, it's dimly lit, and a pinball machine sits in the corner.  That being said, it doesn't have the dirty, unkempt appearance nor surly, vocal all-day drinkers  haunting your typical dive bar, which is a good thing.  It's clean, well kept, and the bathroom is not scary in the least.  They do not serve food here. Â
Friday and Saturdays can be a little crowded while weekdays are quieter. Â Typical crowd age can run anywhere from 21 to mid-30s. Â You'll find a variety of people here, from local students to the after-work crowd. Â The atmosphere is mellow and friendly. Â
The key to The Dive Bar is in it's selection of craft beers. Â Every week or so, a new menu is offered featuring a variety of small-batch brews on tap. Â From what I've seen, there are enough options to satisfy anyone. Â There's a chalk menu indicating what's available, what it costs, and what it's alcohol content is (some of the beers are pretty strong, it's best to know in advance). Â The bartenders have always been helpful when I've had questions, providing some insight to the beers and a common comparison on any particular brew. Â Prices range from $5 to $8 bucks a draft, and well worth it. Â It's a beer snob's dream, but it's fun for anyone wanting to try something different. Â Keep in mind, they don't offer mass-produced products, so no Miller, Busch, Bud, etc. Â
Parking is street-side on Green Street, with available lot parking across from the bar. Â I've never had an issue parking here.
The Dive Bar tries hard to be a couple things: Â a legit dive and a competent brewhouse. Â It does well in both regards, probably bringing the best of both worlds together. Â My only complaint? Â No jukebox.
My go-to place in Worcester for beer.
Yeah, it could be a little bigger but the size makes it kind of cozy.
The patio out back can't be beat, just watch out coming back inside for a new beverage after spending some time here :) Â The selection is second to none and the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. Â I have discovered many a favorite new brew at this place. Â Kinda wish they took credit cards but also kinda don't mind since it keeps me from drinking too too much some nights.
I've nearly always found parking across the street on a Saturday night. There is typically a great food truck out front if you're in the mood for food
Dive Bar is pretty good, but I'm not crazy about this place. Been here a few times, and during the summer when they have jazz on the patio is pretty sweet. My only gripe is it's got a bit of a snobbish feel to it. People think that because they're paying 10 bucks for a beer makes them a more intelligent drinker than somebody who is paying 2 bucks for a PBR.
Maybe its just me, but for those of you who think you take the high road on beer when you get that type of stuff all the time, you need to relax. Sometimes it's good to be able to get a PBR for 2 bucks, and you definitely can't get that here. I'm pretty open to everything and I'm not always open to spending 8 bucks a glass for a beer.
Ah
I love Dive Bar!!!
If you like good beer, like actual good beer, get your butt to this place!!
The list is always solid with a decent variety of types of beers from different micro brews.
The beers generally range from about $4-8 a piece.
The bar tenders are always more than happy to help you find a beer that is right for you, and generally enjoy talking about the various types.
On top of that, it's an excellent people watching bar! Who doesn't like that?
Live music every Thursday as well.
It's a good time
OH! and there is a fantastic hot dog stand outside!
Yup. I love this place.
Great little bar that provides exactly what the name promises, but with a great selection of micro brews on tap - Dogfish, Avery and also some of your more standards like guiness, with the taps rotating on a pretty regular basis...no food and cash only so make sure you grab food and hit the ATM before you head over...however, there is a food truck right outside the door (never tried it, but if you are so inclined it's convenient..in the summer there is a patio outside that sometimes has music..relaxed, laid back crowd - no loud frat boys starting fights here - just a chill time...there is a parking lot across the street that usually has some spaces open...the neighborhood can be a little sketch if you wander in the wrong direction, but overall worth a visit, especially if you love good beer.
Review Source:This place certainly isn't what it used to be, and that is mostly a good thing. The patio/back area is great.
The beer selection is extensive and I appreciate beers of all varieties, but some of the beers recommended by the bartenders have been sub par or worse. That being said, there is definitely plenty of good beer to be found here and I've found it on more than one occasion.
Another thing I like about the Dive Bar is how you can't pin its clientelle down to a particular demographic or market segment. There appears to be no typical patron, and bars that attract diverse crowds are usually more interesting than homogenous ones.
solid beer selection, but wow, what a small place! the outdoor patio is quite large, and pretty much the only place to sit. the chinsy furniture just wasn't doing it for me though, and how often can you sit out there comfortably in massachusetts? expand and make yourself more presentable!
Review Source:Domestic micro brews is the name of the game at the Dive Bar. Lots of Dogfish Head and Allagash style beers to go around on tap and bottle.
I went to a Halloween Dogfish Head event last year. Had a 75min IPA from a cask. The ambiance fits the mood perfectly, good beer, good people, and you can actually talk and not scream to be heard.
As a bonus when you get hungry there is a sandwich truck parked outside for a steak n cheese when your done lol.
Enjoy!
Not a bad bar, a little dumpy inside but with a good beer selection, cash only-not a big deal but do yourself a favor and get cash before you head over here, every time I have to walk up the street to get more money I am warned to be quick, so I am! Â The outside area is a nice touch in the warm weather, though the tables and seats pretty much suck, maybe they'll upgrade this year. Â Bartenders are pretty helpful, not too snooty.
Review Source:If you're a fan of beer, this place is for you. Â Don't mistake being a "fan of beer" with being a fat drunk. Â It's a small, easy going bar. Â To be frank, the ambiance, size, and location may freak people out, as it did to some friends that met up with me there for the first time this past weekend.
They have a lot of local beer from micro breweries that you won't likely find anywhere else (other than its sister bar, the Armsby Abbey). Â
They just opened up a patio out back with a nice wooden fence to keep out the riffraff. Â Every once in awhile they have live music.
The prices are fair and be warned, it's a cash only bar!
Parking is easy, there's a free lot right across the street.
Nice relaxed atmosphere. Good bartenders and very good beer selection. The bartenders were very helpful and knew a lot about all the different selections on tap so I was able to have a nice discussion with them before going with a selection.
The bar is cash only and I have to say I liked that they encouraged you to pay for each round as you go so you don't end up forgetting how large your tab has grown to. I know I've had to make the emergency run to the ATM in cash only bars before for this exact reason.
There is no food served in the bar although there was a grill cart out on the street in front of the bar which was pretty good.
When I'm craving a delicious brew and some tunes to rock out to, this is the clear winner. Â They consistently book amazing acts here and there's never a cover ever! Â They'll collect money for the band, sure, but you'll gladly hand over a few bucks for the likes of The Organ Donors or The Hurricane Horns, trust me. Â
Right now, these snowy months make me crave the warm weather when the huge beer garden out back is open. Â It hosts enough room for plenty of chairs and tables as well as the band to play! Â There's nothing else in Worcester like it! Â
Cask ales are usually featured on Thursdays along with their weekly superband of local musicians. Â PLUS they have the best darn food cart in Worcester parked out front Thursday, Friday and Saturday! Â
If you like American craft beers, awesome live music and great energy then you need to go to this bar!
Perfect, cozy with dark ambiance. Friendly, knowledgeable and unpretentious bartenders(hint hint Armsby Abbey, if you can staff down to earth genuine people at the Dive, why not over at the Abbey? just sayin)
We usually tend to come early in the night around 6. Its dead in there then and that is perfectly fine! I like that just sitting there in a candlelit bar drinking delicious beer and being able to chat with the bartender and with whomever you are with without having to scream at each other.
The outside patio was also a great addition! You sit out there on a warm summer night under the stars at tables lit by candles and you don't even know you're down there on Green St next to the train tracks thanks to the large wooden fence.
Yes, yes, it has an ironic name. Well maintained, clean bar in Worcester, half decent cover bands, chill music and the largest selection of beer in central mass.
If you're a beer nerd, you'll love this place. Granted the beer is more expensive than you'd find at say, Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston, but that's quite a distance from Worcester. Not a big bar, but in Worcester, it's your best bet for a clean, decent pub.
My issue with this place, however, is that it has no character. It's trying too hard to be hip. Yes, It's a "classy" bar, but the wood paneling is not worth the markup on drinks.
Dive Bar is an excellent little pub near downtown Worcester that specializes in craft brews and high-end imports. Located on Green Street, it definitely looks like a "dive bar" on the outside. Inside, it's a long, narrow establishment and the walls are festooned with nautical kitsch and vintage beer ads.
The beer selection is the reason to come here. A couple dozen taps and a cask selection, as well as a wide array of bottles. This past Saturday, you could get St. Bernardus 12 on tap, as well as its cave-aged Grottenbier, Left Hand Milk Stout, Dogfish Head Raison d'Extra, Founders Centennial IPA, and a number of other outstanding brews at reasonable prices. Loads of bottles too, from Belgian lambics, guezes and abbey ales to English bitters to German doppelbocks to double IPAs to, well, you name it. Except for, of course, Bud/Miller/Coors products. Which is a plus in my book (though if cheap fizzy watery pale lagers are your thing, they do have bottles of 'Gansett for 2 bucks a pop).
Very chill atmosphere and cool bartenders too. Loud live music in a small place makes conversation a little tough at times, but whatever. With beers like that -- minus the mob scene of some of the Boston establishments -- it's a great little gem if you're passing thru Worcester or if you live in Metrowest. About 20 min from Framingham.
No kitchen here, which is a downside -- some of these beers pair so well with different kinds of food.
Great little ... read little ... bar in Worcester. Â If you are a beer lover this is the place to go! Â They have great selections on tap, from Belgians to hard to find micros. Â NO MACRO beers, so if you love Bud, go down the street. Â
All beers served in the proper glasses. Â They don't have food yet, but I was told it's okay to bring in your own. Â I was also told they plan to expand into the empty space next door. Â Oh and about that space, looking at the Dive Bar from the outside isn't too inviting. Â It almost looks like it's out of business. Â The door is on the corner, the bar is very long but narrow.
Thursday nights they crack open a fresh cask!
Go and enjoy.
Update: Still an excellent pub. Â The Belgian stock has moved across town to the Armsby Abbey (truly excellent bar and food!) and Alec has focused this pub on high quality American ales. Â Dive Bar has no food, but you can order delivery (most Worcester places know the address). Â Oh and a little "warning" ... CASH ONLY. Â There's an ATM down the street if you need cash.
