OVERATED. Â I couldn't be more disappointed in this restaurant. Â What really makes me mad is that I went here instead of Maple Tree Inn that was a huge mistake. Â While the service was friendly it was slow and inattentively aggravating. Â The food was just below average and there was nothing to get happy about. Â I guess its my fault for ordering the jerk chicken but it had less spice than the rotisserie chicken you get at your local grocery store. Â The hurricane I started with was the highlight of the meal and the bread pudding was the worst I have ever had. Â Never again.
Review Source:I was a regular visitor to the Dixie Kitchen location in Hyde Park. If you go to this location expecting the same level of service and food quality then you're in for a disappointing experience. While the two locations share the same name and similar decor, that is where the similarities end.
First off, the service is S.L.O.W. Not just slow but forrest gump SLOW. It's awful!!! Our waiter was nice but he had to be the worst server ever! Â He had to be reminded 2-3 times before he brought out our drinks and openly stated that the number of tables and the "order of them" were throwing him off. Huh? You serve tables for a living, dude!! It's not like you're running a fortune 500 company!!! Give me a break.
I ordered the gumbo as an appetizer and it was pretty good. Not really like I recalled it being at the hyde park location but it was still very enjoyable.
For my main course I ordered the blackened catfish with red beans and rice along with collared greens. First off, the red beans tasted like they came out of a can. Not good. They were okay but much better at the HP location. The greens were good and just as I recalled. The fish was also okay but nothing like the blackened version I was used to eating at the HP location.
I also the Louisiana Lemonade which is vodka mixed with lemonade and fruit punch. It was good but was't frozen like it typically was served at the Hyde Park location.
Long and short of it is that I won't make any special trips to visit Dixie again. I don't live in the area and rarely have reason to be over there. If you happen to be there and have a craving for cajun then go for it otherwise SKIP it. It's definitely not a desired destination.
If you've never been to New Orleans before, and have always wanted to, then this is the place for you. If you've been there and get that urge for some cajun food, come on up to Dixie Kitchen! They have the actual Pat O'Brien's Hurricane mix and their Swamp Water drink tastes just like a Grenade.
Now to the food. Everything I've tried there has been delicious. If you do make it out, you HAVE to get their jumbalaya.
It would be a 5-star review if it weren't for the slow service we've received on a couple occasions. Â There have been times when we're practically the only table in the place is the employees were chumming in the bar. Other than that, it's a must-try.
This was a fun experience! GM Karen was friendly and very warm! The staff and music was great. We were celebrating the visit of our firend Theo from Hawaii and me and my security staff was enjoying the night out.
The food was excellent and the portion size was huge!! Love the chicken and catfish!!
It's addictive! will definitely return often!
I had a blast last night! The food was excellent; the service was wonderful, no complaints at all. They even had a live dj! I felt as if I was at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The fried okra is excellent, as well as the fried green tomatoes; the catfish strips, red beans and rice; collard greens, and the rootbeer pop. One of the best time that I have had in a restaurant in a long long time.
Review Source:What can I say this place is awesome, and the food is sooooooo goood, it puts you straight to sleep, or you will automatically become very lazy. Â That's some potent stuff. Â Catfish, fried chicken, macoroni, gumbo, jambalaya, seasoned fries, jerk chicken, peach cobbler....can you say complete food coma...Lord have mercy!!! I love this place!
Review Source:Use to be a really big fan of DK but now its just average.
Still love my staple...Fried Green Tomatoes! They never disappoint.
My entree and Johnny Cakes were just warm not really "fresh out the pot"
My server was..GREAT! Very helpful and polite...definite reason to go back.
Not giving up on them yet.
Dixie Kitchen - Lansing is not what it used to be ... I so miss the Hyde Park location. I'm considering writing a letter to Pres Obama regarding it's demise and a petition to reopen. I mean he is from Hyde Park ?
The epic fails of the night included; Peach Glazed Wings with no glaze, Cold Johnny Cakes and a server who was nice but clearly she was handling too many tables.
I've had better times here but this one left me pretty disappointed. Sorry I'm NOT whistling Dixie guys...
Had a shrimp po' boy, I liked that it was "light". It didn't weigh me down like I would've imagined a fried shrimp sammich would've done. They have a decent beer selection as well. Ordered a Purple Haze but they were out - the waiter was cool enough to bring out a few samples of other options.
Review Source:The decor is like Louisiana Applebee's - in a good way. Â Really fun crap hanging on the walls, so if you're there with someone boring, you can at least look at it.
The food is wonderful, and there's a lot of it! Â I have gotten several different entrees, but I think my favorite is some spicy salmon pasta thing. Â Definitely makes two meals. Â They also have my favorite fried green tomatoes. Â Oh, I think I had blackened catfish with mango chutney and a side of plantains once - or something similar. Â Yum! Â Prices are reasonable.
Good food, good service, great atmosphere. For some reason it's always cold in there but the food makes up for it! I tend to call my order in because I know what I want. I feel sorry for those who don't, the wait can be kinda long. My fav is the bread pudding with rum sauce! Yum! The prices are ok, but can get up there if you are interested in trying a few things.
Review Source:Dixie Kitchen is always refreshingly pleasing whenever I go...something different from the Friday's & Chili's that plague our society. Â The johnny cakes are so good, but you always wish you had syrup, you know? Â People go for the cliched "Soul Food", but I always get the blackened Tilapia with plaintains cooked perfectly. Substitute the vegetables with mashed sweet potatoes, and a peach colada served in a mason jar. Yummy! Bonus info: if you like Dixie Kitchen try Calypso's in Hyde Park, it's a Caribbean restaurant by the same owner that blows Dixie Kitchen out the water.
Review Source:I hadn't been to Dixie Kitchen in 4 years and it is every bit as good as I remember.
The fried green tomatoes are still my favorite ever. Nice and spicy, but tangy all at the same time. The gumbo is the best I've had too. It's really nice to return to a place after so long and see that it hasn't gone downhill.
The service was also just as friendly as I remember. Their servers really know how to make you feel like family.
The only thing I noticed that be might considered a negative is that their seating is getting very worn. Holes and tears in the fabric in the booths - things like that.
Keep up the good work Dixie Kitchen and maybe I'll see you in another 4 years!
Let me say I really enjoy this place. I've had several of their dishes and even been there on a Friday night for drinks and the different bands they have. My favorite is the fried catfish and any side dish especially the blackeyed peas or the gumbo. The jimmy-cakes are delicious and they keep them coming. The drinks are good with dinner but when I'm there for the band it's Jack and Tonic. I really love the decor and like to sit in the bait shop area. I take my girl on Tuesdays when the catfish is on special. It's a good deal.
Review Source:If Friday's and Disney's Song of the South had a baby it would look a lot like this place. Lots of "flair" on the walls of old tin signs and random crap hanging from the ceiling, with one area looking vaguely plantation-ish and another like a backwoods juke joint.
Food is just awlriiight. But I've  lived deep in true Southern meat-and-three territory, so my standards are pretty high. Fried green tomatoes had something spicy in there that bordered on blasphemy and the gumbo was just okay. All of the fried items are heavy on the cornmeal and need a little more, oh I don't know.. lard or Crisco and salt or something fatter - kinda tasted like diet fatty food, which I am not all about.  Sweet tea, just alright. The plantains though were surprisingly just out-fricking-standing - perfectly caramelized and lightly crispy on the outside with a spiced yogurt-ish dipping stuff called Montego Bay sauce - better than many I've had any where, including in Havana!  They need to sell that junk by the jar. I would go back to one of their locations just for some more of that. Typical lame kids menu with few things that in any way represent their actual menu (one of my biggest pet peeves) Really excellent pecan pie, served hot with pecans all the way through and no vast hunk of jello-y part under a crust of nuts - they do this right. The meat-and-three options they offer though actually only give you two sides and a bread, which does not count as "three" - Nuh UHhh! Foul! Sorry! Calling straight up bullshit on that one!
The food is here OK, but nothing worth going out of your way for.
I have had good food here once or twice, but more often than not it's just "OK" .. Â Their ribs were pretty mediocre... Â I make better ribs at home and there are places in the immediate area that have better ribs. Â
The other BBQ I've had there was just OK as well, nothing too memorable though. Â Sides are good, though, and probably the best part of the meal.
Last time I went here the service was really, really lousy. Â We had the slowest waitress on earth I think. Â We ended up getting up and getting our own napkins, and at the end ended up getting our own "to go" containers from a pile at the bus table.
The crowd here can be a bit too ghetto at times.
Johnny Cakes...that's all I have to say.
These little cornbread pancakes are pretty much the reason I go to Dixie Kitchen.
I'm a vegetarian so I can't comment much on their entrees (hence the 4 stars), but the place smells delicious, the servers are always very nice, and the atmosphere is warm.
The original location in Hyde Park is amazing, too.
The time I went here I had a white boyfriend and he told me to get the ribs. I joked with him and asked him if he wanted me to get that to make me feel like I was at home. The dumb ass forgot I stopped eating beef so I got something else.
He said the Ribs are so good they make you want to do things. I think I had fish but whatever it was that I had, it was good. Keep on Truckin' Dixie!
