Make a reservation with this busy restaurant and have a little patience as they rush around working hard to take care of their guests. We ordered the spinach and grilled pear salad, chili  relleno lamb combo plate. Fabulous dishes! The flavors rocked and were rich. Wished we hadn't enjoyed ourselves in the bar earlier with nachos and great drinks. We couldn't finish our dinners.
Review Source:WARNING THEY AUTOMATICALLY ADD 18% TIP TO YOUR BILL
We went there on the advise of a local who said the food was better than Love Apple or La Mese. Â We had a perfectly enjoyable dinner, I personally thought the Doc Martin Relenos were fabulous. Â Then the bill, they added 18% automatically. Â REALLY!!!! I get that you might want to reserve the right to do this to Europeans or South Americans, but to a group of native English speakers from Chicago where we know that 20% is a minimum tip for even average service is unacceptable.
To me this is a trick to get unsuspecting tourists to double tip. Â In Chicago, New York or Washington, D.C. I have never seen this added to a group under 8 without it being clearly announced that the management automatically added a tip because they paid there servers an above minimum wage living wage. Â Did not see such a statement anywhere. Â Very annoying.
Came here for brunch on Sunday and was not disappointed. Â I ordered the breakfast burrito, which hit the spot. Â My boyfriend got the veggie benedict with spinach and tomato.
Both were great. Â My breakfast burrito had eggs, home fries, and chorizo (but you can choose ham or bacon) and came smothered in green chile. Â It was enormous at (probably) a foot long. Â
We ordered fresh squeezed orange juices, which were so good it made me immediately want to go buy a juicer....but at $4 for a small glass it seemed a bit much. Â That was half the price of our meal! Â
There are too many other good options for lunch/dinner around the area, but if we stayed at the Inn again, we'd probably stop in here for a quick brunch. Â
*Note* Brunch is only Saturday/Sunday from 7:30am-2:30pm
Nice restaurant set in a historic home of Dr. Martin (go figure). The atmosphere was nice for a couple (where I was seated). The prices were very reasonable and my guest and I were both very pleased with the entree selection and prices. I will definitely go back. It may be a challenge to go with a large party (10ish) because of the layout (I would recommend calling ahead for that situation anyway).
Review Source:I have used yelp as a very informative guide for a long time now but have never had the desire to make an account and review the restaurants I frequent. That being said the level of service I received from "doc martins" was poor enough that I felt I had an obligation to make an account and write a review for this place.
Here is what to expect if you go and order
lunch/dinner:
1: Â 30-40 min wait for a basic lunch order (2 burritos + club sandwich)
2:   If you order when they are "transitioning" between lunch and dinner be ready for the waiter to tell you after you after you have waiting 25 minutes  that your food will be a while longer because of this "transition" in the kitchen (which was something I've never heard before from an established restaurant), for the bean and cheese burritos and club sandwich we ordered I wondering what the chef(s) had doing up to that point?
3: Â When we first arrived most of the tables had an inadequate amount of menus, one or two at the tables we saw open, I really love taking turns to look at the menu, frankly it's embarrassing paper and leather booklets aren't that expensive to have a full set of.
Do your self a favor and don't come here, unless you want to waste your afternoon away waiting for food. Â We didn't, that's why we walked out at the 40 minute mark. The bar seemed some what functional but honestly if something in like a chipotle came to town I wouldn't be surprised if a culinary blemish like this place would go out of business and I hope they do.
I suspect this restaurant probably plays better with tourists than with locals. Â The food is OK and the service acceptable. Â Prices seem a little on the high side for what you get. Â There are easily several places in Taos that are superior in food, service and value. Â The bar is pretty good.
Review Source:Don't cross the street for this place, MEH is a perfect description of this eatery. Â The multi-star reviews must be based more on the alcohol than the food. Â The food is more Midwest than Southwest. The "hot" green chile was mild, I should have brought a jar of El Pinto to add some flavor. Too many New Mexican restaurants are dumbing-down their flavors to satisfy the tourist, this seems to be another one.
I do have to say the dessert was Great but the waitress said that they get it from a third party baker..
Didn't have a chance to try it. Â Although there appeared to be 4 or 5 servers on duty, I was completely ignored. Â After 15 minutes I left. Â No excuse. Â Granted it was fairly busy but not THAT busy.Seemed like a cozy place. There was live music. Â Went across the street to Graham's which was amazing!! Â Go there instead.
Review Source:I've stayed at the Taos Inn every time I visit over the years (except that one time, and it just wasn't the same), and during most stays, I've eaten at Doc Martin's at least once.
One year, my BFF and I went up to Taos for Thanksgiving (she lives in Albuquerque) and we had our T-giving dinner at Doc Martin's. She had the traditional turkey dinner, and I had the red chile rubbed pork tenderloin dinner, we both had wine and dessert, and I remember it was a big splurge for us (the bill was close to $100), but oh-so worth it delicious. Usually when we eat there, we'll go for breakfast or lunch though, because we're a little more budget conscious when traveling.
I was visiting Taos again just 2 weeks ago with my sister, and we stayed again at the Taos Inn. We decided to have breakfast at Doc Martin's the Sunday we were there, and split a mixed berry muffin (yum!) and my sister ordered the Kit Carson breakfast (poached eggs on yam biscuits with red chile and home fries) and I had Annabelle's Green Chile which came with a tortilla and salsa fresca. We swapped dishes halfway through so we could enjoy a bit of both, and were nicely full once done. The green chile was a bit spicy, but pleasantly so. My sister had coffee and said it was very good (I had a sip, it was), and this was her first time having poached eggs (I KNOW, where HAS she been?), so it was all in all a tasty and adventurous experience for her. ;-D Our bill was just over $20, and we planned to use a credit card, but the waitress was very busy and didn't come by, so we just left cash and split.
We sit here in our room at the fantastic Historic Taos Inn, contemplating exactly what to say about their in-house restaurant, Doc Martin's. Â Last night we waited over 45 minutes for our entree, and a requested beverage never arrived. Â But acknowledging that everyone has an "off" day, we returned for breakfast this morning. Â Alas, our simple order of bacon and eggs took over 30 minutes, orange juice never arrived, and neither did any butter for our breakfast bread and English muffins. Â The food was OK, but nothing special. Â That, accompanied with the simply horrendous service, results in only one star, and a warning to avoid Doc Martins, unless you don't care about attentive, prompt service, in which case it may be right up your alley if you're looking for "run-of-the-mill" fare served with "glacial" speed. Â On the other hand, the adjacent Adobe Bar is apparently one of the very few places in Taos with a full bar. Â If you're looking for a full range of spiritous liquors, this may be your best bet, as most eateries in Taos offer only beer and wine.
Review Source:I stayed in Taos with my parents and fiancé and my mom picked out Doc Martin's for dinner. Admittedly I am not a big meat eater so I can't entirely blame the restaurant for the fact that the only thing I really wanted was a house salad. I can however blame the restaurant for having the worst excuse for a salad I have ever seen. It consisted of lettuce. Only lettuce. No vegetables or other yummy salad toppings. I paid $5 for a small handful of lettuce. The service was absolutely terrible as well. I ordered a glass of wine that never came and everything we ordered (food and drink) took quite a long time to actually get to our table. Dessert wasn't much better- I ordered a coconut creme pie that tasted like lemon with not even a hint of coconut flavor. Do not come to Doc Martin's if you are not a big meat eater or if you are in even the slightest hurry.
Review Source:We visited Taos for the first time in 2010 looking for a quick meal and bypassed the steak entrees, maybe because of the higher price tag and opted to try the Elk Burgers. That meal was one of the food highlights of the trip.
We returned to Doc Martin's this year and looked forward to the Elk Burgers, and they did not dissapoint.
We walked a couple of blocks to reach the restaurant and got there about 15 minutes before it opened. Doc Martin's is inside the Taos Inn and adjacent to the inn's bar, which was packed this day because there was a huge crowd waiting to get into the Taos Solar Music Festival.
Once the place opened, we were seated and served promptly. The window panes dividing the restaurant from the bar area isolated us from any barroom discussions and we enjoyed our Elk Burgers with gusto.
Props to our waitress, who didn't know much about the beer they served on tap. She talked to the bartender and was able to tell me more about their selection and made an educated choice, which also did not disappoint.
Pretty great!
As far as Taos from what I have seen, this is one of two higher-endish eateries. Â Great ambiance and menu and a pretty nice wine list and food paring/wine pairing list. Â The lobby/bar area seemed like a fun place to grab a drink while enjoying live entertainment that they schedule seven days a week. Â
I was a little put off that I was the only one that was asked for an ID. Â Sure I was with my 60 year old mother and her 64 year old beau, but I am near 30 myself. Â I just thought it was a little strange.
The only redeeming thing about this absolutely horrible place was our kind, accommodating and harassed looking server. I ordered the Buffalo steak which was bland and uninspired while my Fiancée's "Local vegetable plate" was a greasy, bitter, inedible mess. She had to send it back and we finally ended up getting her a bunch of entree garnishes that were tolerable. We consoled ourselves with the fact that we only went to this place because it happened to be the only one open at 9:30 on a Friday night! Two thumbs, two toes and every appendage down! This may just be the WORST RESTAURANT IN NEW MEXICO!!!!
Review Source:Please hire a better hostess!!! The one there now is unfriendly, disorganized and borderline rude!
We checked in and were told it would be just a few minutes. Â 2 parties checked in after us but were sat before us. (One was the same size and they definitely did not return, read on!) When we reapproached the hostess, she said it would be about 10 minutes. I pointed out that we had entered before the other parties, and with a frown, she said she could sit us on the back patio. Â As we walked through the restaurant, it was about 3/4 empty! When we arrived at the patio only 2 of 9 tables were full. So why the wait?! We waited patiently, for our server, (I'm not sure the hostess told her she had sat us, based on her look of surprise), an older couple was sat. They asked to sit at a different table in the shade (3 were empty) and the hostess told them no. Â Another couple asked to be seated and were told there was a 20 minute wait, (still 5 empty tables). They asked if they could wait on the back patio with their dog, as it is the dog-friendly area. They were also told no by the hostess. Service in general was slow, which seemed odd as there were 3 different servers for the patio.
All that being said, the huevos rancheros were good. My mom's eggs benedict were tasty, although over cooked.
All in all, a 3 for food and a 1 for service.
Went there with my friends Tuesday night had we had a good time. I'm allergic to corn and there weren't many options without it, but I got two appetizers: the chile releno which was good, and the duck-goat cheese quesadilla which was absolutely wonderful. We all shared the chocolate cake they had on special, and it was a ton of food and really good. We also had some sangrias that were quite good. Our waitress was really nice and attentive throughout.
Review Source:When a hungry family is out on patrol, it is not always easy to satisfy all members of the clan. Doc Martin's was able to do this however, as our wonderful, yet brutally honest (she informed our family that we were high maintenance due to the specific eating requests - some are vegan, others vegetarian, etc.) waitress, Laura, brought us some great dishes. The Chile rellenos to start were delish, and the restaurant had a nice "warm inn" feel to it. Good service, good food. Possibly stay away from the eggplant parm, go southwestern, as you are in New Mexico, the land of enchantment! Also, I would like to compliment the restaurant on trying to source locally when possible - you go Doc! If you are looking for a comfortable option, and need to bring the kids (seems like a child friendly place), as well as the business execs, I believe Doc Martin's is the place to go.
Eat well, rsb
I've gone twice. The wait staff was overly friendly to the point of patronizing- I knowe some people like that type of atmosphere, but personally I just wanted to eat, not gain a new best friend.
My boyfriend ordered a sandwich that did not include cheese or mayo in the description, but came slathered in something goey and white. He said he thought it was mayo or cheese or some kind of sauce but wasn't quite sure... uh oh
I showed up a little late and orded after he did- just a side of rice and beans and was told it would take "at least 45 minutes, probably longer." Really? I will give them that they were busy, but that still seems a little excessive to me.. I decided to just get a drink instead and the margarita was mainly ice with maybe 1/2 a cup of weak, sugary booze spashed on top..
Ok, second visit. I never would've gone again, but we were treated to sunday brunch by the fam. When we ordered, the waitress let us know that they were not doing any type of special orders because they were so busy. No problem. I selected one of the options and ordered it sans meat (the meat was listed as optional on the menu). I checked the first couple bites and then slathered it in hot sauce. I guess i should've looked better, because halfway through I realized that it had meat in it. We alerted the waitress to the mistake and she apologized but was brusque about it, and did not offer to replace my meal or remove it from the check. Ugh. Not sure what type of meat it was (chirizo maybe?) but I tasted that greasy nast all day, even after washing my mouth out with soap.
One thumb DOWN, and the other hand down my throat trying to get that heinuous meal out of my stomach!
This is the first restaurant I've been to, when everyone within earshot complained about either the food or the service, but most usually both. Â Oh, what random service it was! Â A server stopped by with a glass wine. "What wine is this I asked" - What you ordered was the reply. Â Can you tell me what it is? No. Â It' s what you ordered." Â My neighbor then leaned over and asked if it was a Malbec because he had ordered one some time ago and it had yet to arrive.
Then a server stopped by and asked if we wanted bread. Yes we said, and then she disappeared. Â I guess she was just taking a poll.
The food didn't arrive until after we sat there completely unattended to, in a very hot and very stuff alcove ("it's adobe - it heats up and then doesn't cool down.")
The shrimp burrito was surprisingly actually fairly good. The elk burger was fairly good. The substantial side salad - which was provided as a substitute for fries because the frier was down - was fairly good too, but our getting it really pissed off our neighbors because they ordered it instead of us!
The whole place felt like the kind of "special occaision restaurant" that people go to when they have few other choices, so this place can slide by with an atmosphere, menu and approach to service that perhaps was considered suitable 40 years ago, but times have changed significantly since then, but this place certainly hasn't. Â It's a time warp in here. Â And while, Taos thrives on it's history, this is one place that could use a break from its history.
My husband and I were in town for a special visit and we wanted somewhere to meet friends and have good food. I had been to Doc Martin's once before but it had been years earlier... Turns out it was the perfect place. The service was great, the food was amazing (everyone at our table loved their meals) and they didn't rush us out after the meal. We'll definitely be back!
Review Source:We had a party of 6 and decided to go to Doc Martins for dinner. Â All of us were amazed at how incredibly horrible the food was. Â I actually sent my meal back to the kitchen without replacing it with another dish only because I knew whatever I ordered would be just as disgusting and the others on the table. Â
The Chili Relleno was nothing more than an over cooked fried tube of vomit covered in corn chips. Â The waitress told us this was their "signature dish". Â Amazing! Â The chef should be fired and Chef Ramsey should be called in which may be nothing more than a feeble effort to save a horrible restaurant. Â Even after sending my food back to the kitchen and each and every one of us in our party of 6 complaining to the waitress about the quality of the food, the chef, manager, NOBODY came to our table to discuss the problem or even apologize.
I will never, ever, ever set foot in this disgusting place again and apparently I'm not the only one with this opinion. Â We were in there on a bustling Taos weekend evening for dinner and only 2 other tables had customers at them throughout our entire meal.
I have no idea if they have a new chef, new management or what...but there's absolutely no excuse for preparing and serving such horrible food at incredibly over inflated prices.
I seriously wouldn't have paid even $1.00 for my over cooked fried tube of vomit
Doc Martin's deserves the awards they have received. The steaks were perfectly prepared, salads and desserts amazing, service impeccable. Waiter was professional, knowledgeable and friendly. We will definitely be going back to Doc Martin's whenever we are in the Taos area.
As others have mentioned, service in the attached Adobe Bar is slow to non-existent, but the drinks were good if you can get 'em!
I enjoyed my dinner very much! Â I had the Chile Reline. The bar tender said that is what they were known for. Â I also liked it was one of the cheaper entrees at 20.00. However, the Relleno was very very good. I liked the crust. It is deep fried but, in my opinion, it is light and not as greasy as one would think with it being deep fried. Â The beans and rice complimented the relleno very well!
Review Source:The previous 2 times we ate here, everything was quite good, but this time, both of our entrees were sub-optimal (there was almost as much fat as meat on my $34 rack of lamb, & my wife's salmon was poorly seasoned & had a sauce that she called "tasteless"). My merlot was barely acceptable. Â The side dishes & salad were good, as was the service.
Review Source:Oh my- we went on Harley weekend on a Saturday afternoon which is fine if you like LOUD motorcycle noise throughout the place. Â One waitress was working the entire bar area, and she was barely qualified to wait on 2 tables at once. Â We got our appetizer and were done with it when she finally brought the drinks (with no apology for the slow service). Â When she finally dropped off the cocktails we asked for our check to speed things up. Â It took 10 minutes longer to get it. Â The salsa was good, but worth the wait and spotty service? Â Nope!
Review Source:We had dinner at Doc Martin's on November 3. Â The restaurant is located in the historic Taos Inn and the interior is very comfortable & attractive. Â We had the seasonal veggie platter - and not only was everything delicious, but it looked like a work of art. Â Our server was terrific and very kind. Â (We ate an early dinner, but otherwise reservations are recommended).
Review Source:I was told by a local that the hotel that houses this restaurant is two hundred years old. Â Anabel makes a fabulous cup of chili, that is blended (not chunky). Â Their guacamole is very good and they have organic eggs. Â Their salsa has some kick, but not so much using New Mexico standards. Â The decor and service were all quit nice as well.
