Very clean and nice wait staff. The atmosphere was great especially on the outside deck watching the boats go up and down the river. Good food. Had the flounder platter and my wife had the crab cake platter. We also had the oyster appetizer. The oysters were a cooked a little soft though. Everything else was very good.
Review Source:I didn't have high hopes for this place, but I was incredibly wrong. Wow!
First of all, very kind and accommodating staff. On time as well. A little slow on the drinks, but then again, there were a lot of them.
Incredible evening outdoor atmosphere, with bright colored benches and patio area. You can also play cornhole, or enjoy the outdoors. So wonderful! When it gets later at night, the outdoor lighting is a bit dim. I suggest candles, tikis, or Christmas lights to brighten up the vibe. If they did this, they could maybe move their live music outside and take advantage I that vibe.
Lackluster indoor area, sadly, and the air conditioning was blasting a cold and putrid aroma. Eat out on the patio if possible.
Note: I don't usually do seafood, but this was spot on!
I ordered the flounder stuffed with crab cake. The crab cake is claimed to be famous for a reason: appropriately spiced crab cake with an old bay style mixed with a creamy flavor. The broiled flounder was very fresh, but there was a but too much butter for my taste.
My brother lives close by, so I hope I can come back some day. So worth it!
The food is always good, Â if sometimes a little slow coming out on busy days. Â I love their crab cakes, and their burgers are excellent and large! Â If you want to find the best bar in town this is it! Â They always have a band with no cover charge on Saturday nights, even in the winter. Â They do a good job keeping the roughnecks out, so you will rarely see a problem there on a busy bar night, despite the fact that it is Colonial Beach. Â They are right at the marina, so there is a great waterfront view from their back porch and tiki bar. Â I always have a good time there.
Review Source:Located at the marina, Dockside is a favorite with both locals and summer visitors. Both the fried and broiled seafood platters were excellent, the crab cakes had a lot of crab and very little filler, the crab chowder was superb. I would give it five stars except that our waitress wandered off for about 20 minutes and I had to ask another server for drink refills.
Review Source:We set out in search of some good non-fried seafood and decided to try the Dockside based upon Yelp reviews and local recommendations. Â We're glad we did because we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will probably be back.
We beat the dinner rush by just a few minutes and were the first ones to be seated in the back inside area. Â Our concerns about being forgotten were quickly dispelled when our friendly waitress arrived asking for our drink orders. Â She said that the sangria was popular so we ordered one of each, a red and a white. Â She brought them out quickly and they were excellent! Â With great flavor and lots of fruit.
We decided to try the Conch Fritters for an appetizer. Â A basket of around 8 tasty fritters came with a small cup of dipping sauce. Â Initially we thought the dipping sauce was merely Thousand Island dressing but were pleasantly surprised to find out that it was something much better. Â The fritters themselves had good flavor and were cooked well without being overdone.
For dinner we decided on two of the Norfolk dishes, with shrimp, scallops, and crab meat. Â The dinners came with a nice dinner salad. Â We were impressed with the salads in that they were a spring mix along with a couple of small tomatoes, and not just plain iceberg lettuce. Â The seafood was cooked in a butter/sherry sauce that was delicious, so good in fact that we both wound up sopping the remaining sauce up with our dinner rolls! Â The seafood was fresh and firm without overcooking. Â The squash side was of good quality and tasty. Â We would have preferred to have new potatoes but the large potato that came with the dish was fresh and nicely baked.
For dessert we decided to share a berry Crème brûlée, which even though the kitchen didn't have a torch to caramelize the top, was delicious.  The bill for two of us came to approximately $80, just what I expect to pay for a nice dinner with drinks and dessert. Â
More about the Dockside: Â As the name states it's located at the dock, with an attached pub and two outdoor dining areas, one screened and one on the beach. Â The band setup is in the screened area just outside the pub. Â The building struck me as one of those places that's been added on to over the years and has lots of personality. Â The service started out very attentive but grew a bit harried as the evening grew busier. Â I suspect that once the band starts things get real hectic but we left before then. Â The interior is comfortable and clean with lots of interesting things to look at.
The service at this restaurant was lackadaisical at best. Â We had to ask for silverware and salt and pepper. Â We ordered steamed shrimp and clam chowder for appetizers. Â The shrimp came out overcooked the first time. Â The replacement batch was better but still not great. Â The clam chowder came out 10 minutes after the shrimp and about 1 minute before the entrees. Â The food was edible but the flavors were boring. Â I would recommend this restaurant only if you can not get a table anywhere else in a 20 mile radius.
Review Source:We had dinner here Saturday night, opting for the boiled seafood platter to split. It came with a crab cake, tilapia, two stuffed jumbo shrimp, four large scallops, four boiled shrimp, a baked potato and some seasonal veggies. For $27 bucks it can feed two people, but the crab cakes were not the caliber of a let's say Timbuktu. The waitress was nice but hurried, the napkins smelt funny like they hadn't been laundered well, and the baked potato (which had been cut in the kitchen) had a noticeable black rottened end. I personally would have either thrown the potato out or cut off the end, rather than serve it to a guest, but hey that's me. The live music was good though, and people appeared to be having a great time.
