Avoid this place! The service is horrible. The waiter dumped a tray of drinks on my wife and didn't even apologize. The manager didn't come to the table. No comp on the bill. What a terrible place! We will NEVER return! But even before that incident, I have never understood the popularity of this place. There is really nothing at all special about the food. I can get the same suff at Pepe's. But this place is wildly popular and always busy. I just don't get it.
Review Source:Its been years since I have been to Don Pablo's. The one thing that I always remembered about Don Pablo's was the good food! I came here quite a few times to dine on their delicious cuisine. But besides the food there mixed drinks were off the the chain! My only complaint about this place was the fact that there food is fairly pricey. Other than that the dining experience was very pleasurable and I would recommend it to any of my friends .
Review Source:We have been to Don Pablo's quite a few times when visiting family in Lafayette. It has always been a favorite hangout. I give them 4 stars based on multiple visits. My most recent experience was more like a 3-star, but the sopapillas would get me back again.
We (wife and I, her sister and bro-in-law, and their mother) went in the middle of the afternoon (2:00-ish), so we were about the only customers at the time; thus the service was great. Chips and salsa were served immediately, and waters right away. The salsa is very chunky and nicely flavored, and there's Cholula for people like me who need a bit more heat.
I was the only margarita, ordered the primarita, the top shelf. It was the pulpiest margarita I ever had, I thought it was very good.
The Wednesday lunch special was fajitas, so several of us got that. I was the only combo steak and chicken, the others had the chicken only. They came with a generous serving of all the fixings, and you can switch things out, which is nice. Some people wanted no sour cream and double the guacamole, no problem. I wanted black beans with the Mexican rice. My one big complaint was that my steak fajita strips were tough and full of gristle, to the point that I couldn't cut through them with my incisors. So when I tried to bite through the steak, the whole strip would come out of the tortilla in one piece.
Then there are the sopapillas. Don Pablo's has hands down THE best sopapillas anywhere. They come soaked in a rum-buttered sauce and are finger-licking good. I will go back again just for the sopapillas if nothing else. And I don't remember having any complaints about my food on previous visits, so I will give them another chance.
Bright and loud, this Don Pablo looked exactly like the others I have been to over the years. Service was slow, food was fair. There's nothing wrong with the food, but there was also little right...it was meh. The margarita was watered down and less than stellar. If you must have Mexican flavors, this is a decent choice...but if you can find a hole-in-the-wall family place, go there instead and have REAL Mexican food.
Review Source:I've been to Don Pablo's before and always walked away unimpressed. I decided this time that maybe that was my fault, since I always ordered the exact same thing (the three amigos enchiladas). This time I decided to try the chipotle pork tacos. I have been converted.
These suckers were some of the most delicious tacos I've ever had. I couldn't even finish one, though, because my friend and I decided to get the dip sampler for our appetizer. It comes with tortillas, chips, guacamole, two queso dips, and prairie fire bean dip, and we definitely filled up on that before our food even arrived. It was delicious, though.
The service was excellent. The only reason for four stars instead of five was that when we split the bill between my credit card and my friend's cash, my friend didn't get all the change she was entitled to. I always think that's a little sketchy.
I don't have much of an opinion either way, because it's an average Tex Mex place with an artificially "fun" atmosphere. However, the food was decent for what it was. I liked the queso dip, beans, and cheese enchiladas.
The restaurant was half empty the evening we went there, and yet our appetizer only came out after waiting for ages then asking for it again. The entrées took a while too. I don't know if that happens often, because it's fairly popular with all the locals I know.
Other than that, I'd say give it a go for large parties, maybe not so much for an intimate dinner for two.
The first restaurant we tried out after moving to town was a great success! Â Unlike other Mexican restaurants, Don Pablo's offered a great variety and many dishes that were spins off the usual and expected by incorporating different flavor palettes into the normal Mexican restaurant cuisine. Â Besides the food being fantastic, the service was prompt and accommodating and the atmosphere was open and inviting. Â Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:My wife and I always have a good meal and a good time relaxing at the Lafayette Don Pablo's restaurant. It is a great atmosphere and the food has always satisfied us. The staff is always top notch in friendliness and helpfulness.
My wife loves the chips, and I love the salsa that goes along with them. The chips are not overcooked like we find at other competing restaurants. I hate it when they are served obviously bordering on being burnt and not to perfection, but DP's seems to actually care about their chip quality and what they serve their customers.
The thing I really want to spread the word about is a new winning item that I tried and am excited about, it is the new Pecos Valley Veggie Fajita. You get the standard onions and peppers, plus spinach, corn, carrots, zucchini, summer squash, and tomatoes (maybe I am missing others). What a refreshing combination of veggies to be use for fajitas. There is a lot of good stuff there and one would be hard pressed to eat all that is served. The only negative is that the carrots where not as tender as one would expect or hope for in a fajita veggie blend.
They do not give you a lot of lettuce, sour cream, cheese, or guacamole, but they make up for it with an extra large serving of sizzling veggies. I do not know of any other veggie fajitas in the Lafayette or West Lafayette area with this kind of variety of veggies. If anyone one knows of any amazing veggie fajitas such as these at other area restaurants I would like to know about it.
Don Pablo's is one of our eastside favorites, and never disappoints..
good food with a pretty large variety on the menu, fun staff and tidy and fun environment.  the waiters know when to talk to their customers and when to serve them silently (an acquired skill that i am finding to be increasingly more convenient).  they gave me refills on my drink without my even noticing them at times (but it was always prompt and they always ask before they refill a drink that does not include free refills).  the reason that i gave it a four is that although i love the food here and the environment is fun and the staff is awesome, i always get indigestion after i eat here.  it only tends to be me (i guess i have a weak system), but  that is the one reason why i gave this restaurant a lower score.  good for kids, would recommend to families, and groups going to have some fun as well as being a good place for a date.
Review Source:At here yesterday for lunch with my Cousin and his wife and had a wonderful time! Â The atmosphere is awesome, and the food is wonderful! Â I had the Chicken Chimichanga and loved it just like usual. Â We also had some flour tourteau's and had them bring out butter, to go with them! Â Overall, it was an excellent dinner!
Review Source:I went here with a pretty large group of friends this summer following a pool party (why does swimming always make one FAMISHED?). We were actually still in the pool discussing food options. Upon mentioning the possibility of Don Pablo's, a man lounging nearby spoke up. Turns out, he was the manager of this particular location and was flattered that we were considering eating there. He gave us coupons for free appetizers! SCORE.
So the 8 of us carpooled over to Don Pablo's. Despite the size of our party, we were seated right away. My friends talked me into ordering the biggest margarita on the menu. It was delectable. I think I got the 3 Amigos Enchiladas (which were also delightful). Overall a really great experience, and a great place to sit and chat with friends over drinks.
