My Favorite!  I love everything I've gotten at Donatello's and I've honestly tried most of the items on the menu. From the Veal Saltimbocca, Penne Puttanesca, to the Chilean Sea Bass I've really loved it all. One of my sons enjoys their Shrimp Delicato which is really "Delicato"!! My other son loves their Gorgonzola Ravoli and everyone wants the Calimari!  For lunch I get their soup- LOVE!   My girlfriends and I went for Bookclub one night and ordered a variety of pizzas. Thin Crust Antipasto, Meatball, and a Mushroom pizza. Everyone was raving about them. There are still a few items I haven't tried yet, but I'll get there :)

Sea bass was delicious, veal saltimbocca tasty but very chewy.
Ranch style dressing like biting into a clove of garlic.
Grandma's pumpkin cheese cake is to die for.
Ambience is anything but quiet.  The noise level made it very difficult to carry on a conversation.  Could have been the fact we were seated against a cement wall.
    Doubt we will return.

This is going to be short and sweet.
Saturday night was our 2nd time dining at Donatello's. We brought 2 other couples with us. We were greeted like old friends and our waiter even remembered my wife and I because he remarked that we were seated at the same table as at the wine pairing party.
The food and service were excellent and everyone had a great time. Try this place and see for yourself. Highly recommended!

I went here for dinner Friday evening for the first time. It was quaint and quiet, which I enjoy. There were only two other tables seated at 8:30 on a Saturday which seemed odd but after strolling around the Arts District I noticed several new restaurants which this place is competing diners for. Appetizer - fried calamari. It came with a marinara sauce and spicy horseradish sauce (reminded me of St. Elmo's without quite as much kick). I ordered the pesto penne with shrimp. The shrimp could have been cooked just a tad less but it was still delicious. My ex had the Veal Parmesan which he seemed to enjoy. It was accompanied with a piece of broccoli and something else. The broccoli did look unappetizing and difficult to eat given it was stem and crown in tact. Needless to say, I noticed it went untouched but then again he's not huge into veggies. I was pretty full so we skipped dessert. The server had mentioned they were out of cannolis but the person who makes them said he'd be happy to whip us up some if we wanted. While I could not eat another bite, I appreciated their willingness to please instead of just saying they're out. The service was nice and I enjoyed the vibe. The stroll around the arts district after dinner was a nice end to the evening.

Great restaurant in downtown Carmel. I eat here two or three times a month - great service, wonderful food, and a nice family-owned restaurant. This isn't a franchise, chain restaurant, but a locally-owned establishment. I highly recommend them!

Upon entering, there was no hostess booth. Then, the owner's son gave me the puzzled look and asked me "how can I help you?" It was odd. I mean, I entered a restaurant. Was he expecting me to ask for a 60 minute massage or an oil change for my car? So I told him two and a high chair for my son. Then we were told to wait so he can clear another table.

Thank God our server gave us a much better service. He asked for our drinks. When I asked for recommendations, he mentioned the popular menu items and that they make everything fresh. So I asked if they make hand made pasta. He then grabbed the owner's son and he said some mumbo jumbo excuse but to cut it short - no they buy their pasta therefore it's not freshly made. However, he reiterated that their sauces are made fresh.

We ordered calamari and it looked liked fish sticks. Plus the taste, oh god... Who knows if they're bought frozen as well. Most likely I think.

I ordered a carbonara pasta minus the onion. It was just ok. I only ate half of it even though I was hungry.

My husband ordered the Bolognese. He had to put lots of salt and pepper to make it more palatable.

We didn't even bother ordering dessert.

Our waitress was terrible.  Upon looking at the website I see that she is the owner - even more shocking!  I think that could have helped the experience as we heard the man serving the table next to us (the son of the owner) and he seemed much more service focused.

I ordered the Caesar salad which was good with the exception of the dressing - since when does it have a mustard base?  Our food was extremely rich and very fair.  My father ordered the veal which was tough and not flavorful.  We just did not enjoy the food, the service or the experience very much and would not return.

Good food, good service. I can't really speak much into the dinner menu, but I enjoy coming here for lunch and having the Tortellini Michelangelo. Beth and Adam typically work the dining room, while Chef Patrick works in the kitchen. It's cozy and quiet, which is probably why I love it so much.

Was visiting family and we went here for lunch last friday. I had previously tasted the chef/owners Pat  food in the past since he was associated with another Italian restaurant that I used to visit. Lunch was great. We ordered Penne pasta with shrimp  (one without shrimp) and we got soup or salad (all 3 of us got salad). The shrimps were big and plentiful, I could barely finish my food. We had a relaxed lunch and visit. The waiter (the Owners son) was attentive and nice. We were able to have a long, relaxed catch-up lunch.

I hope the next time i visit, I will get to come to this restaurant.

Ate there last weekend, food was unbelievable. Problem is you get very little time to enjoy it, the staff nearly tries to shove the food down your throat to move things along. It ruined what could nave been a great dinner

Woohoo! As good as it gets about sums it up. My husband and I went to Indiana for the super bowl, and stumbled across this place! Amazing family that owns it, amazing atmosphere, and most of all real, authentic Italian food! It's a must try if you are looking for a wonderful evening.

Awful.  Just finished dinner and desert. Both couples ordered entrees and bottles of wine.  Ordered desert.  After desert, asked to order another bottle of wine and was denied. Reason being they needed our table in 6 minutes for a "last minute reservation."  Pretty much kicking us out.  This is the first time I have ever been denied anything at a restaurant.  Service was snarky, mean, and pushy.  Never going back.

My husband and I dined at Donatello's for our anniversary and we loved it!  The atmosphere is great.  It is quaint and cozy.  The bread is good and comes with butter and fresh parm.  We shared bruschetta for the appetizer.  It was good, especially considering it was November, so tomatoes weren't exactly in season.  I had the tortellini michelangelo.  It is cheese tortellini in a red cream sauce with bacon, onions, and mushrooms.  It was delicious and quite a generous portion.  My husband had the artichoke chicken.  It was a very unique and delicious dish.  We shared italian cream cake for dessert.  It was good, nothing to write home about though.  Overall, a delicious meal from a cozy, local restaurant.

I was looking for a place that catered to adults yet, had a truly authentic taste. I just moved to the 'Arts & Design District' here in Carmel in June, 2011!  When I walked in, I was quite surprised as to how quaint this place was! It was very alluring to adults ad definitely not a place for kids! Then again... that's what I wanted! They had no tv's, again to which, I loved! Just truly authentic Italian food, nice wine selection, Italian music playing and superb, personalized service w/o being overly attentive! I met the owners Patrick & Beth and they were an absolute delight! At the end.. Patrick brought me a piece of his signature Tiramisu! OMG!!!! I wanted that recipe so badly but, not a chance! And I can't blame him! FIVE STARS w/o a dought!! Perfect place for romance and even solo dining! Highly recommend!

Pros- Quaint setting, friendly staff, food is good

Cons- Too expensive for what you get, took far too long to receive more bread, boring interior

I feel like Donatello's tries too hard to be fancy and European. The food is ok, but it's not $20 a plate good. Also, no olive oil and cheese with the bread...really?

We stopped here while passing through Indianapolis, and what a pleasant surprise. Delicious food, very nice service, and a lovely atmosphere. They brought out parm with the fresh bread, which was awesome. We then had the toasted ravioli appetizer. We were concerned that a breaded ravioli could be too oily, but it was instead a great combination of crunchiness and rich cheese. We're both vegetarians, so we ordered two pasta dishes -- the puttanesca, which was wonderfully fresh-tasting, and a tortellini in a red cream sauce with mushrooms. I'm often not a fan of cream sauces, but this one was different -- complex, not just rich, and the mushrooms were perfectly cooked. We were sad to skip dessert, but we were just too full. Next time.

Everything was good except the food. Unfortunately, that's a key ingredient for a restaurant. My wife and I really wanted to like it, but everything we got, unfortunately, was pretty far off. We started with bruscetta, and it had very weak tomatoes and very strong onions. My wife got a caesar salad that somehow had a mustardy sort of taste. I got bean soup that was quite a bit sweeter than it should have been. We both got a spaghetti with meat sauce dish that, had too much sweet, no salt, and was overall very bland. We've had better out of a jar at home, and at pretty much any Italian chain.

In summary, we were disappointed with pretty much everything. We went next store to La Mie Emilie and had a much better desert. Wish we'd went there for dinner too.

Not really impressed. My salad was over dressed & just soggy lettuce with balsamic & olive oil I think...I can't believe they get away with actually charging people money for that. I had the ravioli which was overcooked with some kind of ground meat on the inside with an herb that left a bad spinach aftertaste. The sauce used for the ravioli was also a bit underwhelming..it was just a think marinara that tasted like it was out of a jar. I have no problem with sauce from a jar, but when it's advertised as "home made" marinara I'm expecting to taste some oregano or basil...something. But I still had to salt it to give it some kind of flavor other than tomato. Along with my glass of wine I ended up having to pay $20 for a lunch that would have cost me $10 out of the frozen food section at Target.

Maybe because it was lunch so the exec chef wasn't in at the time and had left duties to a line cook, but I wouldn't go back for that. I've heard good things about their dinner so maybe I'll give it another shot.

What's better than a home-cooked meal?  When someone else does the cooking!  That's what dinner at Donatello's is like.  And for good reason.  Donatello's is family owned and operated by mom, dad and son and they cook up grandma's recipes daily.  Like grandma's house, it isn't very big, so be sure to make reservations.

My friend and I started with toasted ravioli, which they call "a Midwestern take on an Italian comfort dish".  As it turned out, that meant large and filled with a generous amount of creamy cheese served with a homemade red sauce.  This is without question the best fried ravioli I've ever had.  Period.  The rest of our meal didn't disappoint either.  I try to dine with people who are willing to share, and my friend was more than willing to comply.  We had Tortellini Michelangelo, which is cheese tortellini with mushrooms and bacon in a pink sauce, and Roman Chicken Marsala.  There were two things about the tortellini that really stood out.  First, it had a wonderful smoky bacon flavor that was prominent but not overpowering.  Second, despite the bacon and cream (and butter no doubt!) it was not the least bit greasy.  The Marsala was similar to others I have had in the past, but the sauce was a bit thicker and richer and the dish was topped with prosciutto and cheese.  My only complaint about this dish was that accompanying potatoes and vegetables were under-seasoned and came across as an afterthought.  I'm looking forward to trying more of Donatello's menu, especially dessert.  The cream cake looked amazing but shorts season is rapidly approaching so I grudgingly abstained.

Donatello's has only been open since the beginning of the year, and they have a little room for improvement in the service department.  Don't get me wrong, they were welcoming and friendly.  But there was much rushing around and a little bit of chaos that couldn't be hidden from the customers in the small dining room.  However, the food is the shining star here and the minor disorganization does add to the feeling of dinner at grandma's house.  (If only my Granny could have cooked like that!)

Great family owned restaurant in the heart of Carmel's Arts & Design district. Reasonably priced, friendly staff and intimate--only a dozen tables. Try the Penne Putinesca it's spicy and delicious. Though we didn't try Grandma's Italian Cream Cake; mom's Cannoli's were a big thumbs-up!
