MARGARITAS! Simply amazing. I have yet to go anywhere that beats the margaritas here. They do thier own infusions in house, so the options are really limitless. They also do happy hour till 730pm, and its 3 bucks off the margs! Their are no mixes here, only fresh lemon/lime juice and agave nectar (Hey, they are all skinny!). I really love the Champ #2, amazing spicy flavor. All the other cocktails are pretty darn good too, I really like the Paloma!
The food is also very good. I recommend the tacos for sure, namely, the Snapper, Camarones, or Pork Belly. The guacamole is also very yummy!
They have a pretty legit brunch too!
It is small, but they have a pretty large patio so seating isnt a HUGE issue.
The infused tequila is interesting. Some of them go down easily and some of them... well... you get the idea. Interesting array of mixed drinks especially the margaritas (forgot the one I had) The tacos are a lot better than I was expecting. I went here for the tequila and now I am going back for the food.
Review Source:Of you're looking for a great margarita, this is your spot! If you're looking for a huge food menu, not so much. While most of the options on the menu are delicious, there aren't many to choose from. Definitely stick with the tacos - the burger left much to be desired. However, the blueberry jalapeño margarita I had, more than made up for the lackluster burger.
Review Source:This is my go to place for Mexican food where I can eat and not feel like a need a nap afterwards. Â It at least feels healthier to me with a lot of gluten free options. Â I highly recommend the ceviche and any of the tacos. Â All the margaritas are good but especially the cucumber mint on a hot day.
Review Source:This is on one of Allison Cooks lists and not far from our place so we have been planning to go for a long time. When a friend decided to have her birthday here it was the perfect opportunity.
Our friend liked their bacon tequila which they have taken off the menu so she called ahead and they made a special batch for her. I am not a tequila guy (plus I had to drive) so I did not have any but it was the smash hit of the night for the rest of the group.
Parking was free valet so that was nice.
The service was ok at best. Somewhat inattentive but its a cheap mexican place so I can excuse some minor faults.
I had the burger which was ok (I have tex mex all the time and just did not want another taco that night). If you go here, I suggest that you get the one of the tacos. The burger was only ok.
They had a nice patio so now that fall is here and the weather getting better that is a great option to consider when you go.
The drinks were good $7 at happy hr. usually $10 had the signature blueberry, cilantro & jalapeño... It had a good burn never had anything like it b4. I really like the drink as far as taste, however I wasn't really getting a buzz. Good drinks but semi weak. Also had the shrimp tacos cool not mind blowing but cool. I would return hope the drinks get stronger though. I want 2 get buzzed. But not have to buy 5/6 drinks to do so. I'm not a big drinker usually 2 or 3 get me there that wasn't really the case with these. The waitress was cool and knowledgeable, in reference to the menu. It's a cozy little hole in the wall spot.
Review Source:The specialty drinks & infused tequila's were outstanding! Â We sat at the bar last Saturday and the service left nothing to be desired. Â The bartenders were friendly, knowledgable and they pour a good drink. Â We came for the drinks but the food was impressive. Â The empanadas are a must try. Â We will be back!
Review Source:This place is wonderful. From the various infused tequilas, delicious street tacos, to the awesome decor, this place is one of my favorite spots in the Garden Oaks area. The wait staff is also crazy friendly and will walk you through their awesome menu of food and tequilas.
The place is also very reasonable but the bill can creep up if you don't watch your tequila intake!
I normally wouldn't give such a low score but I am a bit of a taco connoisseur ... I got 3 tacos - snapper, camarones and the pork belly for $11. None of them were very flavorful. They all fell flat. The snapper was the worst, it was dry, tough and didn't taste fresh. Not everything was bad though. The blueberry jalapeño cilantro margarita was good. The waitress was very nice and the atmosphere was unique and relaxed. They have a large patio which would be nice during the cooler months but be warned that the parking was frustrating. I don't think I will be going back. There are better taquerias in Houston.
Review Source:Infused tequila, yeah. Â Food, no. Â Was interesting to try their different drinks. Â Many that I sampled through my orders and my friend's were quite good and I'm not a tequila drinker at all. Â We came here for happy hour, which they don't have a very good one so I don't know why we chose here. Â We were more hungry than thirsty and we left disappointed cause the food was not good at all. Â Just because it is interesting doesn't mean it is good people. Â Even the classics were not very good. Â I had better at a "fast food" mexican restaurant. Â
I gave the 3 stars cause it's as a bar, which it is classified as, it is pretty good. Â As a restaurant, save your money. Â You'll need it cause the drinks aren't cheap here either.
What a unique little place. LOVE the whole infused tequila concept....and they have a plethora of flavor options
We had the habernero vanilla shot....it was good. But strong/spicy
The hibiscus pineapple flavored tequila/margarita & jalepeno blueberry margarita were everythang!
Waitstaff was more than friendly. Gave me a detailed mini tour & everything. Glad to know I've got a new lil drink hideout.
I love tacos
I love tequila
I love using tequila as a cure-all because that's what you do when you're Mexican and borderline alcoholic.
With that being said, I should really stay away from El Gran Malo because it will one day become my enemy when I realize tequila has been the reason for many of the crazy situations I've gotten myself into.
Until then, I'm getting as many blueberry jalapeño cilantro margaritas as I can until I drink that one that makes me wake up the next day and ask my friend why the hell I got some random tattoo of a cartoon character on a visible part of my body.
My friend and I tried this place for the first time yesterday and were already planning our next visit while eating our pork belly tacos. Speaking of the tacos, they were out of this world!!!! The tortillas tasted homemade and the meat was so tender and well-seasoned.
They also have great music and very friendly bartenders. Just about every song I heard was in my iTunes collection, so that's definitely a plus because I have great taste in music.
The only thing I didn't like is that we were overdressed for happy hour since we planned on clubbing afterwards. Wait. I take that back. We looked like hookers, so we were actually underdressed. It's a casual atmosphere, so we will dress accordingly next time.
All in all, there wasn't one thing about this place that I didn't like. Great little spot!!!
I believe they serve one of the very best strawberry margaritas. The blueberry jalapeno cilantro margarita was very delicious and spicy. Tasty  salsa and queso. Tacos were just okay, tortillas were a bit on the dry side which led to breakage when biting into it.
In conclusion, I am absolutely looking forward to returning for more margaritas!!
Long time customer here and this place just keeps on getting better and better. Â We usually come here just for the margaritas but a newish drink menu has introduced many non-margarita drinks that are amazing. Â They also usually have a creative drink special for the day. Be daring and ask the waiter what he/she drinks here.
Always try to get here before 7:30 to get that $3 off! and don't forget they also have local craft beer on tap.
PRO TIP: Ask for a Lucas Powder rim on your margarita.
This place a a lot of fun. Â The infused tequila is out of this world. Â Peanut butter and jelly tequila shots? Â Sounds disgusting, but it's great. Â I recommend making other flavors into a margarita. Â Habanero vanilla and anise are two flavors I can vouch for. Â Guacamole and salsa are very good. Â
I knocked them down a star because some of the food, like the tacos, and very expensive and very average.
Go here with friends, get some funky drinks and appetizers, you'll have a blast.
Disappointing:
- This is Mexican food for hipsters. I vastly prefer the tacos I get from my local food truck. Got the carnitas, didn't even eat half of it.... hard to ruin carnitas
- Way too expensive for what it is
- Service is horrible. They're friendly, but these guys couldn't even take our orders (they literally got three people at a table of 10 and forgot to ask anyone else
- Elevated to two stars based on creative margaritas. They should probably stop trying to serve anything but drinks.
Definitely not going back.
I really like this place. If only parking wasn't a hassle.... By the time I arrived (7:30pm on a Wednesday), they had run out of spots and refused to valet my car. Thus, I had to park on the other side of the intersection. Lame. I guess they don't give a damn when they're just working off of tips.
The restaurant is extremely casual with an eating area outside if you prefer to sit outside. They have a bunch of different tequila infused drinks with different flavors. You can even customize your own mix. Pretty damn cool.
Since they are known for their drinks and tacos, that's what I ordered. I got the strawberry cucumber (not on the menu), and it was quite good. As for food, I got two tacos: a beef and a snapper. The beef taco was extremely flavorful and delicious. The snapper was lemony and spicy - good in a different way. Wish I had saved the beef for last since it was my favorite of the two.
It's a bit pricey..
El Gran Malo, reminiscent of Nacho Libre, with it's huge luchador mural on the wall inside, has a trendy and fun environment. The staff is quirky, with one waiter sporting a tophat.
LIke Ignacio (Jack Black in Nacho Libre), this chef also has a complete appreciation for the use of fresh ingredients in his food. I tried the taco trio with the Snapper taco, Pork Belly and Chicken Tinga, and each was arrayed with tasty and complimenting fresh ingredients such as pomegranate salsa, shaved cabbage, peanuts and pumpkin seeds. If you're a spice lover, you'll adore the snapper taco with fresh serrano peppers.
It appeared that most of this Thursday evening crowd, at about 6pm, was just there to have a drink and chips and salsas. The chips and salsa are not free, but they are cleverly paired with three different types of salsas, or you can choose from the queso dips or quacamole. The price is fair for the amount of salsa you receive. Â I must admit, as far as drinks are concerned, El Gran Malo served the best Margarita I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Sure, it was a bit pricey, but this homemade concoction was worth every penny I paid.
As I left this brilliantly clever & quirky restaurant, I was singing (to myself) "Encarnacion, Encarnacion" with as much spirit as Ignacio.
Tip: Valet is free. They park your car just a little down the street, where you can see it as they go retrieve it for you. It's almost a joke, lol.
The good? Â The margaritas are amazing, and they have TONS of flavors to choose from. Â
The waiters can also help you decide which one would be best for you. Â I had a hybiscus margarita. Â Super delicious.
The bad?
Parking is tough. Â And the food is kinda overpriced for what you get.
All around awesome. I moved here a year ago and it's nice to go somewhere with flare that's not in stuck in the montrose bubble.
This place has solid well thought out drinks, food and service. To be completely honest, they had me at the liquor infused horchata. Swoooon. I got the flautas, my boyfriend and his brother got all different options of tacos, and we loved everything we got. Â Lucky us, because on this particular day, the chef decided to make some sort of blackberry cobbler with blackberry ghost pepper jam and boy we're we excited to give it a try. It was out. of. this. world. Seriously, whoever came up with that-- you are a bad ass.
Just tried the place out (Thursday night) and I love it! It's a cute little place. It wasn't too crowded, but maybe it was the weather. They have quite a few tables outside on the patio, and they have additional tables inside with one bar. The place isn't very large on the inside, so I wouldn't throw a company happy hour there but it's good if you're meeting up just a few friends.
They are known for their delicious margaritas. The bartender was super nice and recommended some that he liked. Â I wasn't too adventurous so I chose from the menu and tried the one with cucumber and mint. It was super refreshing! For the second round, I asked them to throw in some blueberries in the mix and it was just as good! They have a list of ingredients listed on the wall so you can really throw in whatever you like. I heard they make all of their own mixes so you're definitely in for a treat!
Complimentary valet topped it off for me. I LOVE a place where I don't have to drive around aimlessly looking for a spot to not get towed :)
Visited El Gran Malo today, Cinco de Mayo. Pulled up for the FREE VALET PARKING, which was very slick. Waded through the crowd in the front outdoor patio area, where there was a bar set up and crawfish being prepared for the boil out back. There was also lots of outdoor seating in the back, where the crawfish was boiling, and it was packed.
We went inside where there is a small bar and a long line for service. The gang was working fast but was hard to keep up with the crowd. If you order food, you get a little number and the servers go around calling your number until they find you. I couldn't tell if there was table service.
There is a seating bar in the front room and further back there is another room with some tables with plenty of room for more tables and we commented to each other why they didn't bring in more tables. Expect to stand in line for the bathroom on busy days. I observed chicks going into the hombre room.
We ordered and then walked around the whole place looking for a seat and didn't find one. Walked back in the bar and got lucky that two seats were vacating at the seating bar near the door.
For food, we ordered at the bar a couple of tacos, one camarone and one pork belly. Pretty good. Wanted to order the ceviche, but forgot. For drinks, we had a rocks blueberry marg, which tasted mostly like a regular marg with some crushed blueberry floating in it, and a frozen beet marg, which is good if you like beets. I think they were $8 a piece and you can get more complex drinks for $12 or $13. I was a little disappointed that the $8 margs are served in an 8 ounce cup. Not a good value, even on cinco de mayo.
Three stars for location, valet service and atmosphere. I'd go back for sure and I'd remember to order the ceviche cause I heard it was good.
I love El Gran Malo! They have deliciously crafted and infused margaritas. You can get anything infused into it... I've seen things like beef jerky and jalapeno on the menu! While I have mainly kept to ordering off the menu, rather than creating my own varieties, everything I've had there has been great! Makes for a great way to end your long day at work or for a weekend midday drink!
I haven't tried much of the food, but the queso is good, guacamole, and mango and lime ceviche. All were good and went perfectly with their margaritas!
The service is always great, they have fun events that they advertise on their facebook page. I went one night and they were randomly play Loteria in the bar which was a lot of fun! They even have complimentary parking so you don't have to hassle to find somewhere to park! Can't get much better that that!
This place is the dive-bar version of TQLA on Washington Ave. The food was alright but not anything that can compete with the veritable little Mexico that exists in the Heights. The Tequila selection was good but wildly overpriced. The service was alright but not exactly attentive.
Bottom line: I would not go back.
A good friend of mine lives in the area and wanted to stop off for a 'night cap' at EGM- otherwise I would have probably never heard of it.
We arrived just after midnight to a just-closed kitchen. No bueno for us because my boyfriend was hungry. However, the cooks offered to cook us up something anyway. Awesome. My bf got 3 tacos, all were good, not extraordinary, but then again it was late and they whipped it up fast for us.
I am not a fan of liquor. Just don't like it. I don't do 'shots'-- I really don't see the point when you're an adult and can get a buzz at your leisure with any beverage of your choosing that actually tastes good. HOWEVER, it was IMPOSSIBLE to resist the plethora of infused tequilas literally covering the walls here.
My friend recommended the 'peanut butter and jelly' shot. It's a small shot of peanut infused tequila (peanut butter) and a small shot of some berry infused tequila (jelly) that you shoot back and forth. I did. It was good. I actually want to come back and try other flavors.
Liked the chill atmosphere as well.
heart heart heart!
I know Rose the bartender from another restaurant, as she is always friendly and offers me suggestions of what crazy tequila infused flavor I should get next.
Probably my favorite drink there is the blueberry jalapeno margarita, as the sweet taste of real blueberries blends well with the spiciness of the jalapeno slices. Â Even my friend who swore to only get only drink ended up ordering two of them! The Champ was also another table favorite.
Taro and picked fixins aren't that great, as taro didn't even taste like taro and picked fixins was sour and spicy. Â Churro and horchata are da bomb, as I could drink them to my heart's content.
Right now they have a deal going on with Karbach brewery, as many of their beer is on tap, plus La Paloma is their specialty drink with infused grapefruit. It actually comes in a pint glass, so not the smaller margarita glass!
If you are brave, you can order the 1 or 2 skulls, as they will add a great kick to your margarita.  The 3 skulls is produced on special occasions, as they infused the tequila with  ghost pepper!!!  The server said this is one to be sipped, not taken in one shot.  One guy did and almost fainted!
As far as the food, this place isn't going to have your tex mex enchiladas or fajitas (currently they do as a special!).  It's more of appetizers and tacos, but they are still all  very fresh and tasty!  I like their pork belly and red snapper tacos, as the chicken tinga was good but not the best.  My friend said her shrimp tacos were excellent.
I know people are complaining about the valet, but by requiring all business to have x amount of parking spaces (something Houston is trying to pass), it hinders smaller capital ventures from entering the food scene. Do you want Houston to just be a big parking lot or a place where you can try new and exciting venues?
And for goodness sake, the valet is free. Â You just need to tip them a few dollars! (If you get their early enough, you can actually park at the far end of the street next to the park.)
In summary, I love this place for all its exciting drinks. Â The HH is awesome with $3 off all margaritas til 7:30PM, and the place is casual enough to invite large groups of friends to sit outside or in the restaurant. Â I've even hosted my birthday event here! Â (They can only take up to 8 separate payments for a table, so bring cash if you have more people.)
Come here and get your infused on!
I love tequila.
Truly, tequila makes me feel like a goddess and I feel just as magical the next morning. That's right, I don't get hungover at all drinking tequila and hence, it is my liquor of choice.
So take it from me, these infused tequilas are AMAZING. Since I wasn't partying too hard on my particular visit, I enjoyed my tequila in margaritas. However, I love tequila shots and I would drink the pineapple infused tequila straight. (I wonder if they sell their infusions to take home?) Mixed as a marg, it was magical -- the best non-frozen margarita I've had in recent memory. The strawberry-horchata margarita combo I created was sweet and a little spicy from the cinnamon -- a very unique combination. My hubs drank half of the strawberry-jalepeno and then let me finish her off -- this was my least favorite of the 3, but still pretty rockin'. These margaritas are about $7 during the LONG happy hour, so I'd never pay full price.
Our waitress, Megan, was REALLY great. She was at our table all the time making sure we were happy. She (with help from the bar and the kitchen) got our drinks out super fast and our food out even faster. She made great recommendations and was patient with our indecisiveness (due to the massive list of infused tequilas) even though she was busy.
For food, we ordered the salsa trio, and this is where you lose a star from me. If you're going to charge me $5 for a basket of chips and 3 salsas, it better be the BEST 3 salsas I've ever tasted, but these were not. They weren't even close. And the chips? They were just your average restaurant tortilla chips. Tila's on Shepherd has fried plantains and assorted awesome chips, AND they are complimentary. This plate certainly isn't offering anything above your usual complimentary chips.
The tacos and AMAZING homemade yellow corn tortillas redeemed the bad salsa plate though. I ordered the carnitas, pork belly (which is really more like authentic Mexican carnitas), and the snapper. My tacos all came with a large amount of meat and were not dry (as some have noted). My husband loved the pork belly but my favorite was the snapper. I love fish tacos and this one was top notch. Compared to the snapper and the pork belly, I wouldn't order the carnitas again, but it was good, nonetheless. The tortillas were really magnificent -- my husband wanted to order a few to eat alone.
Cool little joint. I'll be back.
Unfortunately, due to one major mistake they are getting only 1 star from me and this is why:
After spending $75 here for two people, paying and my husband was finishing up his drink (margarita) that he had just received. Â One of the servers or people that works there came up and put a sign on our table that said "Reserved" and then said: "I'm just putting this here because we have a long line of people waiting to get in."
EXCUSE ME!!!!!!!!?!!!!!
Okay, number one....I've been here three times, came purposefully early (6pm on a Friday  night) to get there before it got unbearably busy.  We ordered multiple drinks and food and spent $75 (which is a lot for this kind of place on two people) and by 07:15pm you are rushing us out the door? Right after we paid and we still have a full drink on our table? REALLY?
How rude and unprofessional! SERIOUSLY.
And you might ask...how do I know they were rushing us out the door (other than the obvious fact that he made it unbearably and ridiculously obvious with his commentary) is because just before he came and put the sign on our table...I had went to the bathroom, and when I came out of the bathroom a shorter dark haired employee walked by and the tall almost balding guy with way too tight jeans walked after him as they look out across the room at a packed room and said "Ya I know I'm trying to clear the place out to sit the people that are waiting."
I then sit down at my table and he literally walks right up and puts the "Reserved" sign on our table and then kind of looks at us like waiting to see if we are going to jump up and leave, and then when he sees that we aren't then says his comment about a long line of people waiting.
I mean really! COME ON! I don't care who you are or what kind of establishment you are running YOU NEVER RUSH PAYING CUSTOMERS OUT THE FREAKING DOOR AFTER THEY JUST PAID! HELLO! What is wrong with you?
We will not be back.
About twice a year, I fall in love. Â Usually I fall pretty hard, obsessing over every single detail of that very first night, and the exact moment I fall in love. Â
My Saturday night spent at El Gran Malo was the lucky guy.
A friend's birthday and catch up session laid the groundwork, as I had been hearing about this place for at least the last year, but had never taken the plunge. Â
Having just returned from Mexico, I was burnt out on margaritas, but as soon as I sat down and was greeted by the bartender (I wish I could remember his name) which was so darn friendly you wanted to squeeze him.
Four of us sat at the bar (after complimentary valet, super important in the Heights) and got the chance to speak to the bartender as he mixed his creative concoctions of tequila goodness. Â
I started off with the Beet margarita which honestly was one of the best margaritas I have ever had. Â (and I have had my fair share) Â It was delicious, and whether or not it was true I left like I was having my veggies and getting my buzz on. Â Win. Win Right?
The second one up was the Jalapeno berry cilantro. Â OH MY! Â The perfect amount of zing, with fresh blueberry muddle. Â YUM! Â I sucked down that puppy in about 5 minutes. Â
We also sampled a variety of food that included the bacon wrapped jalapeno something (HOT, but good!) the ceviche (nah!) the pork belly taco (needs a touch of salt, but very good) guac (good) and the torta burgers which were good (I only had one bite, but worth it!)
The service was ridiculously outstanding. Â Being that we were able to sit at the bar, we got the full explanation of the bar, background, awards they have won (MANY!) and history of the place. Â
They have a nice outdoor patio area that was PACKED, and the area just has a cool Austin/LA vibe to it. Â
Without a doubt I will be back. Â LOVE at first sight!
The only bright spot here are the somewhat creative infused tequilas and cocktails. Even so, the drinks are too pricey to enjoy. The atmosphere is good and with Dia de los Muertos inspired decorations, it's hard not to smile a bit when you walk in.
I used to believe it was impossible to get bad Mexican food in Houston but Gran Malo proved me wrong. The torta with chorizo had no taste, the fish and pork belly tacos were an utter disappointment, and the quesadilla came from a kids meal somewhere. In short, the food is mediocre at best.
I love Gran Malo. I'm a big fan of all their infused margaritas -- everything is fresh and they use real lime juice as opposed to sweet and sour (yuck!).
Yes, it is Valet parking but it's complimentary. I'm not sure why David H. is complaining about that. I'm pretty sure the reason behind the Valet parking is due to the fact that the neighbors put up No Parking/Will Tow signs. Free Valet is for customers to not have to deal with the hassle.
I really do enjoy their chips/queso/guacamole. I wouldn't go there for their tacos but my brother loves them so maybe it's all about your taste. Definitely worth trying though!
A funky little Mexican joint without the cheesy atmosphere of just about every other Mexican/Tex-Mex place in the country. Â A small bar area as soon as you walk in the door. Â Several bar stools and high top tables. Â The dinning area has an awesome mural on the wall. Â Some of those libro wrestlers, black cats, other slightly darker/humorous imagery. Â Good music playing at a reasonable level, not generic crap. Â This is not your average Mexican joint with bright colors, lights, pinatas, or anything else that you would associate with such a place. Â If that is what you want, go across the street or On The Border, or any other crappy spot.
Anyway, the service here is excellent. Â As soon as I walked in, the bartender greeted me, and told me about the menu. Â A handful of local beers on tap. Â Saint Arnold, Independence, Karback, Buffalo Bayou. Â An amazing selection of Tequillas, and their own house infused options. Â The selection is aw inspiring. Â Their cocktails and margaritas are top notch. Â Only made with fresh fruits, juices, and they make as many things in house as possible. Â I am not a huge fan of Tequillas, nor do I know a lot about them. Â Though the bartenders are very knowledgeable and are ready and very willing to make recommendations. Â I can't remember what it is called but I ended up with a pecan, cayenne infused tequilla, vermouth, and bitters cocktail. Â Excellent. Â Just as good as anything I have had from Down House or Anvil.
On to the food. Â The menu is small, with mostly small plates. Â Don't expect globs of gelatinous, crappy refried beans that have no taste, or any other crappy filler you would expect from a Mexican joint. Â The ceviche and quac are freshly made, and excellent. Â There is a salsa sampler as well. Â I started out with some quesadillas, they added chicken for me. Â Very good. Â Again, small portions, so you can indulge and try some other things. Â Then the tacos, oh my. Â The best tacos in Houston. Â I had chicken tinga, pork belly, and snapper. Â All excellent. Â The pork belly is so flavorful and tender. Â To many places have tough pork belly, which make it a chore to eat (Petrol Station). Â The snapper was fresh as can be, and the tinga is excellent. Â
Tequilla is far from my favorite adult beverage, though they do it right. Â With knowledge, and passion. Â Add really good food and a decent beer list. Â This is a great spot.
El Gran Malo is just that... The Big Bad. Â Bad service, and bad food. Â For credibility's sake, I'll add that I'm probably the easiest guy in the world to please, but I'd have to dig pretty deep to say something good about my experience at Malo. Â The competition to win repeat patrons in the Houston/Heights restaurant scene is just too high to put out such a lack luster performance. Â I'll take my money and appetite somewhere else, thanks. Â
First, there is only valet parking. Â Don't get me wrong. Â They have available spots outside the restaurant, they just cone everything off and force you to valet. Â Which was kind of funny when I handed the valet my ticket to get my car and he walked 4 steps over to pull my car out of the parking spot we were standing by... awkward. Â Come to think of it, the valet was super nice and friendly... I probably just didn't like having to pay to park given that the restaurant was so bad. Â
Second, the service was ridiculously bad. Â We were one of two occupied tables for Sunday brunch and it still took 20 minutes to get our food and when it finally came out it was cold. Â mmmmmmm.... cold eggs benedict. Â Everyone likes that. Â Not to mention that we ordered some queso when we sat down and they never brought it out. Â When they set our cold main course down they politely let us know that the queso was on it's way. Â I politely let them know to not worry about it. Â Also, this is probably the only mexican food restaurant in town where you have to pay for chips and salsa. Â As it is, you'll probably end up paying for the chips and salsa and then waiting 30 minutes to get them. Â
Normally I'd say to try a place twice no matter how bad you thought it was just in case they were having an "off" day... but why should I? Â There are so many other restaurants in the Houston/Heights/Washington area I'm already on to the next one. Â Which is a sad thing to say considering Gran Malo is sitting on some prime real estate on Ella in the heart of the Timbergrove/Heights area. Â
My advice to the owner: Â Yell at some people and take back your restaurant.
