We ate at El Meson last night. Â The amount of food you get is really good. Â The prices are very modest. Â It was full of families having dinner. Â The waiters were attentive without being intrusive. Â The food was tasty.
So why only 4 stars and not 5? Â The food was very good in an American/Mexican way, it was not outstanding. Â The room was very colorful, but in a kitsch kind of way, kind of a poor man's Tiki Room at Disney Land, and not fine dining.
If you are a family looking for a nice night out with the kids or parents, this is the place to go. Â If you are a YUPPIE looking to impress a date, better find more of a top shelf restaurant to go to.
Whoever said the food here was bland must not have taste buds. This place has lots of flavor. Some of the best salsa in town, great queso dip, prices are reasonable and the service (for the most part) is on top of things, they can be hit or miss but I've never had notably bad service. I've also never had a bad meal either.
Review Source:First of all; I never been to a more colorful restaurant in my life haha!! It feels like if you are eating at a pre-school... The food selection is very wide so you'll certainly find something that will catch your attention. I had the mexican pizza and the fried ice cream.... The pizza was super tasty and loaded with lots of delicious meats and flavor. The fried ice cream was good but I had tried better.
Review Source:Took my family here for lunch. Bland meat, so-so salsa, nobody was really happy with the food. I got a buritto, kids and wife got tacos. Meat had virtually no seasoning. Beans and rice were ok. Prices were average. Ambiance was playful and location is pretty convenient. Even with a half off coupon, I wouldn't go back, this was some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Portion sizes were pretty good.
Review Source:Amazing Mexican food! Still in shock that it is a chain, albeit a small one...I usually avoid chains like the Plague! But...this place is soooo good, the employees are soooo nice, and the plates are huge for the price! Even the teas and soft drinks come in huge glasses! lol The food is really good and the manager takes his position VERY seriously, wanting food that is REAL and GOOD, not cheap or quick. Try the chiles toreados (sp?), grilled jalapenos and onions...wow! Don't do the "Special" platters if you don't have a huge appetite or a strong arm to carry out the leftovers! I particularly love the tamales and tostadas...You can ask for things to be extra spicy, but I find that everything, so far, has been "just right"! It's darned authentic here, even the beans and rice are real!
Review Source:I'd say this is pretty much the exact same as Little Mexico and El Rodeo.  The atmosphere is  very bright, festive, and colorful, but the food is the same Tex-Mex, cheese laden, super-sized portions of meat and beans you've eaten at the other places. Â
I gave it two stars because that means "Meh, I've experienced better," and that is exactly how I feel about the food. Â Other than the food it is clean and the service was satisfactory, so if you like El Rodeo and Little Mexico you will like El Meson. Â If you prefer authentic Mexican, don't bother eating here.
I am a fan El Meson. Â My in-laws are fans of El Meson. Â Pretty much everyone I work with is a fan of El Meson. Â People who thought El Rodeo was a good place like El Meson better.
I generally either get the Chimichangas Alcapulco (chimi with beef, shrimp and chicken), the Burrito Gigante (seriously giant and tons of queso), or the Taco Salad (which is made in a giant taco shell not bowl).
I think one thing that is lacking is the amount of flavoring in the beef--it needs some more kick however the chicken is much better. Â
You generally get your food quick and it is clean.
The prices are good (most dishes around $6).
Hmmm. Â Well, it looks nice. Â Staff was nice. Â Better than El Rodeo. Â I've had people whose opinion I respect say that it was really good. Â I've only been here once. Â I ordered a combo plate with an enchilada, a tamale and a taco or little burrito or something. Â What I was served was a plate with rice, beans, and 3 pounds of unseasoned ground beef wrapped in that which you would wrap the above things in. Â There was an exceedingly bland thin red (enchilada style) sauce poured over the top of my pile of meat and flat breads. Â Wow. Â It was like a elementary school cafeteria worker saw a picture of these things and attempted to make them. Â It was on par with the mexican I had in canada, which was on par with some one putting a hamburger in a blender and pouring it on a azteca tortilla with v8. Â I wish you better luck than I, but I'm not going to bother trying again until at least 3 more people tell me that mine was an out of the ordinary experience.
