My top pick for sit-down authentic Mexican food if you are in Portage. Great service, affordable prices, and large portions of amazing food. Don't be fooled by the outwardly shabby exterior, as another poster commented - the inside is rather cozy and casual. I send hotel guests over here whenever they ask for good Mexican and they all come back with glowing comments!
Review Source:I sure wish I could add like 10 more stars for this place. Â From the outside and the entrance, it kinda looks like a dive on account of the menacing crackle of the neon, ugly as sin exterior paint, and cluttered vestibule. Â The dining area is actually quaint and inviting, with long and roomy wood benches and large tables. Â It boggles the mind how large the dining area is, as it winds around the kitchen in an L shape. Â The servers are very friendly and patient as you strive to make your way through a gigantic menu chocked full of affordably filling mexican food, all tasting amazingly authentic. Â A typical dinner will cost between $8 and $12, and I guarantee you will be stuffed and satisfied. Â
The shrimp chimi is a large, fried weakness of mine. Â I think I counted 12 plump jumbo shrimp inside a perfectly golden crispy shell drowned in awesome queso blanco (white cheese) with a big portion of beans and rice. Â 12 shrimp in a dinner costing only $10.99? Â How do they afford to make these things?
The hard shelled pork tacos are the best I've ever had. Â I ordered thinking I would get the usual tiny cubes of pork you find at other places. Â What I got was pork sliced directly off the roast in strips, a nice, thick golden shell, and a heaping mound of shredded white cheese on top. Â These tacos are heavy and delicious.
The giant burrito suiso is exactly that - a giant. Â This thing is so big it's embarrassing. Â You won't find the cheap fillers other places overstuff their burritos with. Â This bad boy is mostly meat inside, and easily weighs in over a pound. Â It hangs off both ends of the plate and costs a mere $9.99.
Even the chips and salsa are served with care. Â The same little dude characteristically brings them to your table the moment your butt lands on the booth. Â The chips are warm and fresh, and they serve the salsa in a large bottle and provide little bowls for individual use. Â A must if you're surrounded by double-dippers. Â
If you're more of a carry-out person, they gotcha covered. Â They even pack everything properly to avoid spillage and breakage, unlike most everywhere else.
I've recommended El Pueblo to several of my friends and coworkers and they have all been blown away. Â Give them a try.
