Some might call it a hole in the wall- i would have to agree.  It looks like an old Bingo Hall with all the mixed up furniture.....but holy smokes don't let that fool ya.  This place is good.  So good that we had it twice in our 3 day trip to Taos.
I had a guacamole tostada plate the first time.  Not on the menu, but seriously so good.  Then I had the tamale plate with green chilli.  The chilli is spicy, but left me wanting more.  You also get sopapillas- I mean come on!
We were recommend by a "local" and so glad we tried it out.

I wouldn't let the inside fool ya- take a random seat and sit back and enjoy.

Should you order a guacamole tostade- tell them Summer sent ya!

My first impression of this place? Whoa...it looks like a bingo hall. How old is this furniture?

But despite the humble setting, I'd eat at this place on the regular if I was local.

Great eats for cheap. Yummy breakfast & soapapillas. I bet everything else is good too.

Untourist, we were the only non-locals, if you can figure out the menu it is great.

Place does not look like much, but it was the best New Mexico food of the trip.

I had the Taoseno Steak, done perfectly.  With the sopapillas, too much food.  Someone else in our group had the Trout, also done perfectly.

Even the house wine was better than normal.  Go there when in Taos.

Typical, delicious New Mexican food.  Nothing fancy about the food.  Restaurant was packed with locals.  Friendly wait staff.  Good prices.

Really enjoyed the Mexican dinner food and especially their green chili sauce!  It's decor is that of a diner, so nothing fancy but good food at a reasonable price.  Service was also acceptable.  Had breakfast one morning which did not compare with their dinner meals.

Our hotel recommended this place as a fav among locals. My partner absolutely loved his green chili. My steak was meh...it was served with canned corn and some sort of salad soup - I say soup because the amount of ranch on that thing made it so! Redeeming quality here: HOT FRESH DELICIOUS SOPAPILLAS. I'd probably go back but stick with something off of the Mexican side of the menu.

Food is good but if you're not a local don't expect good service.  The waitresses will sit and visit with the locals while your food gets cold!

I grew up in New Mexico and as an adult visit as often as I can. This is excellent Northern New  Mexican eats. I hadn't read all the Yelp reviews so I was initially surprised by the very modest decor. Part of the surprise was due to the outside not matching up with what was on the inside. When in Taos eat here!  I had the combination plate and my lady had the burrito plate. We were both very pleased!

The food here is awesome. I ate here 10 years ago and I remembered how great the food was and just came back last weekend and was not disappointed. Again, awesome food. The service was excellent. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Eat here next time you are in Taos and you won't be disappointed.

The food was fantastic.  The staff was super nice and helpful.  And the sopapillas were outstanding.  All this for a very reasonable price.

This locals cafe delivers on what counts, real New Mexican cuisine at great prices.  Not the place for the typical New Yorkers that haunt Santa Fe, this places cooks homestyle without the Fu-Fu.  Not fancy, but family run and great.  I can't comment on the Queso since I didn't try it, but I was raised on Mexican food.  The tortillas were thick and chewy, the grilled steak nice and tender, and the fry bread light, fluffy and not too greasy.  The chicken in my enchiladas was nice, plump and definately not pureed.  Maybe they don't like Texans. (Just kidding:)

Okay, here's the deal. I have worked at numerous Mexican food restaurants and lived in Texas most of my life. I probably eat Mexican food at least two or three times a week. So, when my family went to Taos for Christmas, I was excited to try a little local New Mexican joint. My oh my was I horrified.
Y'all. I like queso. It's a big deal. Their idea of queso is that nacho cheese you get at ball games and Taco Bell. The chicken in my chile rellenos was pureed. PUREED, Y'ALL. What restaurant on earth thinks that it's appropriate to serve their clients pureed chicken?
On top of the monstrosity of my food, the service was appalling. As a server, I have very high standards. I understand the game and am so willing to work with you, but when everyone at the table is out of things to drink and the server checks on your table once in a blue moon - no. This is not acceptable.
On the whole, just go somewhere else. Or sit somewhere you can keep an eye on your server the entire time and don't you dare order the chicken or the queso.

If you're looking for a native New Mexican style (not Mexican) restaurant, family owned, where the locals eat, then this is the place for you.  Good food, good service, great chile!

    Locals know best.

I got this tip from a local that said try out El Taoseno for great food.

I was forewarned about the decor so I knew it wasn't the atmosphere that drew the crowds. I asked the server for a recommendation and he suggested the combo platter. It was a mix of taco enchilada and beans and rice. Great choice and large portion. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the fried bread was a unique menu item for me. Like a dessert with honey.

Time to pay and... ACK!... Forgot my wallet. I asked the gentleman if he would mind if I could pay in about 40 minutes. I needed to drive home and get my wallet and come back. Upon my return the gentleman was pleasantly surprised. He thought I was skipping out on the bill.   I apologized and left a larger tip to compensate for the trouble. I was surprised that he said people do this a lot. Well here's my good deed to return the accommodating staff. If you have a chance don't miss el Taoseno. Good food good prices.

The locals always know where to eat, this place has delicious food and it's totally inexpensive - my kind of place!

My sister and I had planned to stop at The Bean on our way out of town our last day in Taos, but alas, it was not where it was before. Waaah! So we backtracked and stopped here.

The decor is utilitarian, bordering on bleak, but I said to myself "that must mean the food is good!" After all, both my favorite breakfast and Vietnamese places back home aren't much to look at, and many of the booths have duct tape on the vinyl, but the food is MWAH! delish.

I ordered the breakfast burrito with red chile, but it arrived with green. However, I love them equally, so I took a little taste and decided the green would be just fine. My sister ordered the smothered hash browns - potatoes with green chile and cheese and onions and maybe some other things - we did our usual "bite for a bite" and both were delicious.

When I headed to the restroom, I noticed a Ms. Pac-man game in the hallway, and forewarned my sister, because she's a big ol' Ms. Pac-man freak, and I was afraid she would start playing and we'd never leave. But she had no quarters, so I worried for naught.

The service was great, the waitress friendly and attentive, and I would definitely eat here again when I'm in town. Oh, and our bill was less than $15. Woot!

This review would have deserved a 4 possibly 5 but for the service we got its a 3.  The food here was really good, big portions and not too expensive.  Seems to be more of a local peoples place because everyone seemed to know everyone there.  This is the first place i have ever left a tip under $2 and was planning on leaving just the pennies to make the ticket an even dollar but didn't.  We walked in and the place was very busy.  After being seated it took about 5 minutes for our drink orders to be taken and another 5 to receive them and place our meal orders.  After finishing our drinks, noone came by.  45 minutes to an hour later, we see the people we walked in w/ paying out after they had finished their meals.  Our waitress hadn't been back to see if we would like another beverage or drink refill.  The food finally arrived and ordered one more drink.  The waitress was never seen again until the ticket was brought and never again was asked if we would like anything else.  This place really needs to work on better service for their customers.

We asked a random Taos Po-Po where he would eat if he was getting off work in Taos.   He said El Taoseno - and he didn't set us up either ("Ummm, one burger please, it's for a COP").  :)

Anyway...it's just off the road and looks like a dingy joint, actually it is pretty dingy but everyone seemed to know one another.  The interior reminds me of a sweet 1983 movie - which works because it was built in 1983.

I ordered the new! blue corn enchilada plate with beef and an extra side of green chili and my BF ordered a steak burrito.  It was divine.  I was so impressed, I'm also impressed with how we get sopapillas with every meal (my first time in Santa Fe).  Deeeelicious!!!!   Another great experience in the land of enchantment!
