Best fried oysters we've ever had, tender on the inside and crispy on the outside and they don't skimp on the portions either. Crabcakes seemed nearly all crab and so tasty. MIss Faye's potato salad is more like mashed potatoes, but seasoned just right. Not to be missed. Hushpuppies were sweet and moist. Service was friendly and fast. Seems to be a favorite of the locals. We've eaten there several times this week. Plan to go back tomorrow.
Review Source:Stopped for some chowder. Good menu, lots to choose from and reasonable pricing. Â However the 'down east chowder' was disappointing. It had little flavor, other than of flour and clams, of which there was an abundance. Onion rings and okra were standard Sysco fare and lacking salting. Perhaps fish or shrimp burger would have been a better choice.
Review Source:Small town, local people working in the joint, ONE waitress for 10 tables. Â I don't know how she did it. Â (the waitress) Â Sweet sweet local lady waiting on the hungry church crowd that all seemed to show up all at the same time. Â I just wish there was a sign that said "please seat yourself" so that way us newbies/non-local folk aren't standing there like idiots blocking the entrance.
The food was good and the prices were good as well. I had a cheese burger........WITH..... COLE SLAW?!? Â Is that cole slaw??? Â LOL! Â I forget I'm in the south. Â Still tasty (after scraping the cole slaw off) and it was only $5.95. Â It comes with chips but they ran out so they upgraded our side with french fries! score!
Service is slow, but she again was really nice and was doing the best she could. Â
Give this place a whirl when you're Down East!
The vegetable sides were very fresh. Â The ice tea is made from a special recipe with real tea leaves - best I've had. The owner - Ms Faye - just turned 80 in 2011 but looks a sprite 62 - she makes the clam chowder from scratch - her version was featured in Our State Magazine. It was fresh, light and delicious.
We ordered the 5-seafood plate to share so we could sample everything. Unlike most coastal restaurants, they are honest here about what is locally sourced (seriously, many places insult your intelligence on this since all you have to do is know what is in season). The food is true Carolina coastal fare, fresh as is possible and unadorned to let the true flavors stand for themselves. The sides change daily, and the squash casserole was incredible. Ms Faye visited everyone's table, and hugged old friends. A charming collection of locally self-published literature is also available in the back corner.
We will be back.
Good food. Good price. Service was okay but they I ordered hush puppies and key lime pie, both of which were forgotten, yet given. However, the waitress was very polite and threw in a free order of the hush puppies, so I can't really hold something as minor as that against her. On an island as small as Harkers, this is definitely a place I would recommend, if nothing else but for the desserts. Homemade pies made by Miss Faye (the owner who even has her own rocking chair in the dining area) do not disappoint.
Review Source:If you drove much further East, you'll land in the Atlantic Ocean. This is a "good 'ole boy" restaurant. I didn't see one tourist here.Just locals who came in after a long day of work for a serious plate of good eats. The menu states "Experience the down east saying -It's the Best ever been". I would say that if it wasn't , it was in the running. I had the shrimp basket which came with two sides.I chose the Okra and Fries. We ordered some slaw on the side, but it was to sweet for my taste buds. The shrimp and Okra were REALLY great! The hush puppies were just fair. Not great. Real fresh.I'm sure caught with in the day or so.( all for $9.00) The atmosphere in the little place was black and white checkered table cloths and all your condiments and plastic silverware was right on your table in a basket. Apparently it has something to do with the septic system there that she cant do major dishes. So your food is served on foam plates and you get foam cups to. There are mounted fish,Boat models oars fishing nets buoys and pictures on the wall of Cape Lookout, and surrounding sites,Service was just so personable....you feel like it's your own mamma. Lots of chit chat about anything and everything. Bathroom was clean as well. So if your out at Harker's Island waiting for a ferry or stopping in at the Decoy Museum, Fish Hook Grill is a welcome stop.I'll be back for sure.
