Everything was perfect from start to finish. Â The crab cake appetizer was full of crab meat no fillers. The filet mignon with blue cheese topping was cooked to perfection. Flemings potatoes and creamed spinach was delicious. Â Dessert was the chocolate lava cake with fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and a pistachio cookie that left me speechless. Â The service was wonderful. Â Overall a superb dining experience.
Review Source:One of my favorite cousins lives out of town, but often travels to Memphis for business. When he's in town, we like to get together and catch up....on his company's hefty per diem. (But this is *not* why he's my favorite cousin!!!)
Last trip through Memphis, he chose Flemings for our family rendezvous. I hadn't been since my last review (2009!!) and was eager to give the restaurant another shot. Atmosphere is dim, like I like it. We tried the calamari for an appetizer, which was really nice and perfectly cooked. For entrees, I chose the petite filet. The sides (onion rings, baked potato, mushrooms), ran about $10 each and we shared them, family style. If you're not a garlic fan, beware, as many items are overpowered by it.
Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, it was a fine meal. If I was picking up the tab, however, I'd prefer to do so across the street at Ruths Chris.
From the minute my friend and I walk in the door Fleming's seeks to impress us. An iPad wine menu? Awesome. More awesome still are the wines on the list itself. But I digress, I want to keep this review short and sweet.
We started with the pork belly appetizer: succulent. I then moved on to probably the second best Caesar salad I have ever had. From the prosciutto to the dressing, it was magnificent.
For my entree I had the porcini rubbed filet and it was flawless. Perfectly cooked to medium rare. The "Fleming's Potatoes" were cheesy and a superb accompaniment. We enjoyed a pinot noir, the perfect accentuation of the well-prepared steaks.
Dessert was the best carrot cake I have ever put in my mouth accompanied by Moscato D'asti. Service was impeccable. Of course, the prices were high - this is definitely a special occasion restaurant for me... but in this case the occasion was merely me seeking an exceptional dining experience... and I got one.
Flemming's offers a fine dining choice that is refined without being stuffy, and formal without being pretentious. Â The service is attentive and friendly, and the food is always top notch. Â They regularly have specials that can be some excellent deals as well. Â Valet parking is complementary (but do tip the valet). Â They have an extensive wine selection, and make it easy to find your favorite by using iPads for the wine list.
This is the perfect place for a high end business dinner or a romantic evening. Â Unlike many steakhouses that seem to cater to the over-50 set, a younger client will feel comfortable in the upscale but friendly interior. Â I particularly like the open kitchen, it's a fascinating thing to watch during your meal.
It's not cheap, perhaps $40 per head if trying to be cheap, and easily $100 per head with all the courses and wine, however it's one of the few places in Memphis where I feel the prices are justified. Â Clearly the ingredients are all top quality, and more importantly I've never seen a steak that wasn't cooked perfectly out of the kitchen.
I'm particularly fond of their Caesar salad. Â Most places seem to think a Caesar needs to be swimming in dressing, but not Flemming's. Â They clearly put some love into both the dressing as well as the assembly of the salad and the result is a proper Caesar.
Yes, I like Fleming's...here, there and everywhere. Â But seriously, how can a place that sells $40 steaks have such a mediocre, second-rate, run-of-the-mill beer list? Wow, Blue Moon! Be still my heart! And one other thing...when you're done serving tables, leave. Â Nothing cool about employees "holding court" at the bar (note to manager). Note: A month later and the menu still has Widmer Hefeweizen listed..which they didn't have a month ago. One star removal.
Review Source:Personally, in the past I have felt that while Fleming's is good, it is overpriced. However, I have recently discovered their Small Plates menu. Has it always been there or is it new? They have great portion sizes and variety - filet mignon, scallops, seared tuna. lamb chops. The portions were a perfect size and the price more reasonable. I also LOVE their happy hour - what a great deal on drinks and food.
And you have to try their Farmers Daughter cocktail - it is a martini made with strawberries and basil, SOOO delish, fresh and light. A perfect summer cocktail
This review is for the happy hour special and bar only. If you have been before you know that you have to get there very close to 5 or you will wait for a spot. Seems to be a very popular happy hour. I have found the service at the bar to be stellar but we did have so-so service at a bar table last trip. For the money and even not just for the price the food is very good. The burger is great, the shrimp cocktail has large plump, well seasoned shrimp, the mushroom ravioli are awesome, the baked brie is very good, topped with honey and walnuts with apple slices on the side. They have great beer, wine, and martini specials and I would highly recommend it for happy hour between 5-7 but I wish less people knew about it because it can be crowded!
Review Source:Excellent happy hour & bar food! Friendly bartenders! Trying brunch this Sunday for Mothers Day! Yes, I have eaten in the main restaurant just at another location.
So Mother's Day Brunch was superb. Their Blood Orange Fizz drink was scrumptious. Mom & I both had the Fresh Fruit with sour cream & honey sauce - not something that I was certain I would like, but actually was very light and a great addition to the fruit. Mom had the frittata and I had the prime rib. For dessert I had the creme brulee - which may have been the best I have ever had. It was lighter than most I have had. YUM!
Although Fleming's is a chain the food is top-notch. It doesn't feel like a cookie cutter steakhouse.
The last time I went there was some confusion about seating. We actually wanted to sit at the bar to take part in the happy hour but our hostess led us into the main dining room instead--and before i could ask whether we could still partake in the happy hour specials, she had left. Turns out that we couldn't and we'd have to wait in the lobby for an HOUR for a seat at the bar. (Mind you, it was 5:30 on a Saturday). So fine...we just stayed put. I was still frustrated that I had to pay twice as much for the same appetizers that were on the happy hour menu....when we were literally 2 feet from the bar. The bbq shrimp appetizer for example was $13+ on the main menu but $6 on the bar menu--for the same portion. That didn't jive well with me at all. So just a fair warning about that...
Back to the food. The barbecue shrimp and crab cakes are spectacular. I also had the Limoncello martini and it was delicious and strong enough to lift my spirits after the seating debacle. The service is very good, attentive, and professional. This is a great place to celebrate a special occasion--but it is definitely a splurge. If you're looking into the Happy Hour, read my warning above and you should be fine.
Memphis doesnt have a lot of great steakhouses, so I was excited to try Flemings. It was solid, but for the price, I think you would be better off at Ruth's Chris or Folks Folly. I had the Bone-in Ribeye which is my go to cut, and it was cooked perfectly and the sides-creamed spinich and onion rings were pretty standard but nothing special. Everything was "good" from the atmosphere to the food to the service. It's just missing something.....I'm not even sure what, but when I drop this kind of cash, I want to be blown away.
Review Source:The wife and I went to Flemings last night to celebrate her birthday. This was my second visit to Flemings and each time has been a really solid experience.
The atmosphere is lovely and reminds me of Shaw's crab house in Chicago. Flemings has a really nice vibe to it. Also, you see a mix of ages in the ages of their customers which is nice.
I'm surprised to see people recommend Butcher Shop over Flemings. To begin, Fleming steaks are dry aged and pack a ton of flavor. The sides are very good and the steaks are cooked very well. Â The service at Flemings is what you would expect to find at any high end eating establishment.
Unfortunately, I believe Folks Folly and Butcher Shop do not measure up to the high standard steak house experience that others worte about on Yelp.
If you're looking for a great steakhouse dinner option in Memphis Flemings is your place. I look forward to coming here again!
I have seen some low ratings for this place and it makes me wonder if I just got lucky and went on the right night, because this place was as good as any I have ever had. There were 6 of us and everyone loved their meal. The side dishes were great, the Porcini rubbed Filet was one of the best steaks I have had and the seafood tower appetizer was excellent. The wine selection was top notch as well, if you like that. Everyone got a steak, whether is was the filet or the bone in ribeye. I recommend getting the Porcini Filet. Sides, we got flemings potatoes, which I highly recommend, the mac and cheese, and creamed spinach. All were wonderful.
Review Source:Tried this place twice and frankly for the price I would rather eat at Buckleys or the Butcher shop. Lobster bisk was burnt, and who wants vanilla butter for their lobster (tasted like cake batter, YUCK). Lobster was cooked perfectly. Got a 'tude' from the waiter when we sent back the soup and butter. Filet included in the combo was a joke. No larger than a silver dollar. Not going back.
Review Source:We dined at the above establishment twice. The overall experience was average. The only positive thing about Flemings is that it has got a smaller portions menu.
The following things were ordered during our last visit:
Lobster tempura with vegetables was crisp and had nice dipping sauces. Wasabi sprouts enhanced the flavour of the dish. Â It is an appetiser of a decent size and could easily be a main course for me.
Fresh mozarella and sweet tomatoes salad was all right. Balsamic dressing was somewhat bland.
Double think pork chop was nice-looking, but tough. It took some serious knife sawing to cut it into pieces.
New Zeland Lamb Chops were all right, roasted tomatoes were just sour.
Frozen lemon gingersnap pie was refreshing.
Our waiter was overwhelmed running between the tables he was assigned to serve and the private party he carried dishes to. Additionally, I was under the impression that people coming to Fleming's must order wine. We did not order any wine and our waiter looked at us perplexed.
This whole experience makes me wonder whether or not it is acceptable to go to a prime steakhouse to only enjoy an appetiser and dessert.
Their signature salad was made with iceburg lettuce. Â Lobster tail was not fresh, tasted like it'd been sitting in a solution of sugar/salt to try to cover up the lack of natural sweetness that comes with fresh lobster. Â Filet mignon was decent (I've had better), good quality beef (I've had better), and properly medium rare.
Highlight of the meal was vanilla ice cream and mango sorbet.
I enjoy Flemings. Â It's become a regular place for us when we want a nice meal. Â I start with a double Johnny Walker on the rocks. Â We order wine, as well. Â I usually get the bigger-sized filet, we get the Flemings potatoes as a side, and occasionally we get asparagus.
It's also got a very nice atmosphere.
Poopsie and I went last evening. We took advantage of their before 7 PM special at the bar. We had a few drinks, some food and all for just about $40. Poopsie had the sirloin burger. It looked really good and she said it was really tasty. $6. I had the carpaccio appetizer, it was good, but a bit bland. $6. I also had the ahi tuna appetizer and I liked it better than the carpaccio. $6. Had a drink and a glass of wine and Poopsie had a drink too. It was pretty quiet in there but it was early, 5PM. It did seem to be picking up somewhat, at least in the bar. Maybe everybody else was there for the $6 specials.
I hit only two $$ in the Price Range part of the survey cause we stuck to the $6 specials.
