Came here when it first opened and was surprised to find a falafel burger on the menu. The falafel was pretty tasty but more importantly it was fresh. The boyfriend had a massive burger with onion rings and bacon on it which he enjoyed. Cute mason jars for glasses, nice atmosphere and the service was good. Tried to go back again in hopes of a veggie burger being added to their menu but was told all they have is the falafel. Not a bad thing just looking for more of a variety.
Review Source:Group of 7 went for lunch on a Sat. Â We all came away happy with the service, the food and the value and a huge improvement in service and overall experience compared to last visit. Â Maybe they are reading the review...
Space: Great outdoor seating, courtyard space, opening wall system perfect for CA weather. Nicely done.
Service: Late lunch so not crowded. Â Waiter was well-trained and went above and beyond in terms of being gracious, attentive and accommodating. Â Drinks constantly refilled, did not rush or hover but always quick to be on hand when we wanted something.
The burgers and other dishes all came as ordered, including some elaborate requests for variations. My Ortega Burger was perfect. They are not cheap burgers but the value is there.
Good beer selection, although I wish they had a better selection of tap beers among the darker varieties.
Disappointing. This spot opened and created quite a local buzz a year or so ago but now seems to be in decline. The indoor/outdoor atmosphere is still quite appealing but the food simply lacks.
One would assume that ordering a burger at a place that specializes in burgers would be a safe bet. This was not the case during a recent visit. The server never asked how we would like our burgers prepared. Mine was overcooked and dry. The side of onion rings were not warm and hard - kind of like they had been sitting on a counter for twenty minutes.
The wine list is limited to about ten to twelve items. They were out of all but two of the selections during our visit.
The atmosphere is great when the weather allows outside dining. I'll be sticking to beers and apps if I return.
I went there one day before catching a movie by myself and I've only been here once so far. I ordered a "Grandpa Dog". Not quite sure where that name comes from but whatever, it was decently priced considering the ingredients go onto it and the fact that I was eating out. I take quite an interest in the back house operations, so I didn't really pay attention to the front house operations so I sat down at the counter where I could see the kitchen. I'd have to say that the cooks in the back seemed kind of annoyed that they practically had to flag someone down at the time just to hand out an order, there was a waitress nearby but she refused to even touch the plate because she was handling money at the time, something to do with counting out or something, not sure(which is a very good reason and I appreciate the sanitation guys!) When I got my "Grandpa Dog" The plating was, well it's a hot dog and fries, let me see you plate it like the Mona Lisa, I did find the cast iron dish they put the hot dog in to be kind of annoying since it didn't fit the plate very well and it just slid around, oh well, I went for the food. I'm a food major but I am never very picky about plating so I'm not going to complain about that too much. The toppings on the dog fit together really well, but the hot dog meat itself, well that was a little lacking. Rather lacking in taste really. The cook was friendly and honestly asked me what I thought, I told him exactly what I told you guys, and he seemed like he took my honest commentary pretty well, and thought about it a little, which is a good attitude for someone who works at a restaurant to honestly consider a customers opinion. Before I got my check they treated me to a campfire milkshake I think is what it was called. I'm a sucker for toasted marshmallows, and the crushed graham cracker sold it to me pretty well, the texture of the soft ice cream and the crispy graham crackers was well thought about and the chocolate chips in the vanilla shake brought this smores in a glass well around. I enjoyed it there, and I will return. For all those who had bad service, I'll pay attention to that next time, I didn't notice anything particularly bad, they did everything pretty quickly actually.
Review Source:Visited this restaurant for the first time as part of an office lunch group. Â I ordered the Lorraine (includes grilled onion and a fried egg on top of a burger) and was disappointed that the burger was essentially flavorless, almost completely unseasoned. I expected to add salt to the fried egg but the meat tasted plain and not particularly delicious and it is difficult to add salt after the meat has been cooked. Â In contrast, the fries were over-salted. Â
On a positive note, Flipside is pretty inside with a great layout, the server was pleasant and efficient and the timing of the food was excellent, and the location is great. Hoping the food gets better in case my colleagues want to go there again for a group lunch.
What a great place to go and hangout with either friends or clientele!!! I love there patio especially during Happy Hour!!! $2 beers between 3-6 is such a steal especially when you can get what ever beer you want on tap!!! The hostess and servers and really friendly and make me feel that I am always welcomed back!!! The S.F. burger is to die for!!! Its a must have when I go there!!! Oh yea I forgot about the bartenders, with there great fresh hand squeezed cocktails!!! My favorite right now is the "Markdown", just saying you have to go down and check it out!!! Don't listen to the other reviews they have changed in a good way!!!!
Review Source:I was with a group of eight, all of us having a later than usual dinner. Â Walking into the restaurant, the hostess was absolutely rude. Â She allowed us to sit outside since it was a warm night, but once she found out we were eating, insisted we sit inside. Â I'm not sure why, but she was visibly irritated, as if we were a bother. Â However, we were all so hungry we just dealt with it and proceeded to sit where told.
Although our server was more attentive, the general staff seemed way more interested in each other than the people they were serving. Â And then the food showed up. Â What the hec happened? Â My wife used to actually kind of like this place, but we were mystified by what was placed in front of us. Â I can't really describe it --- I guess it would be something like if you were to go to Wendy's, but no "to go" packaging, everything served on plates instead. Â It was awful. Â
We were glad to leave and ended up salvaging our evening having cocktails somewhere nicer. Â It was a relief to leave that hostess behind, sulking behind her podium like Gollum. Â I can't recommend this place and although I'm not a regular Yelp poster, I had to do give it a go again because of this experience. Â I gave it one extra star because our server seemed like a nice guy.
Came in one night for dinner with friends when it wasn't crowded ordered drinks that never arrived and sat with empty water glasses for about 30 minutes...apparently our waiter was off for the night and no one came out as his replacement... NO FOOD AND VERY POOR/ NON-EXISTENT SERVICE!!!!! I won't be back.
Review Source:Have been here twice to dine, once for dinner and once for lunch, and then another time just for drinks. Â All I can say is the yelp star rating is spot on. Â Wish this place would get better since the location is nice. Â It definitely has potential. Â But after a few tries, I'd rather go next door.
Review Source:I came in to Flipside a few days ago and had the San Francisco Burger. Â The waitress asked about substituting the fries, and I chose to do so with onion rings. When the food came I thought there were hardly any onion rings, a lot less than the amount of fries I'd get elsewhere. Â So I figured the price would be the same. Turns out they charged $3.50 extra and my total was $16.45. Â I didn't ask for the price upfront and they didn't tell me, but $16.45 is too much for a burger and onion rings. Â The sandwich was pretty good, but not as big as I'd prefer.
Review Source:I've been here before and had a good burger and drinks on the patio and enjoyed it. Â My recent visit was far less enjoyable.
I ordered the Cobb Salad which had a minuscule amount of both bacon and avocado. Â I always thought a Cobb would come with chicken but in the case of Flipside it is like $4 extra, pretty disappointing.
The servers were friendly and all wearing a flipside teeshirt except for one guy who was darting in and out from behind the bar wearing shorts, a tanktop and an on backwards ball cap, pretty unprofessional if you ask me.
I don't think I'll be going back soon nor will I be recommending it to my friends
Came in on a Sunday. My boyfriend and I Â wanted to order a couple of cocktails and watch the Giants and warriors game. Bartender greeted us and then kept running around completing other people's order. My boyfriend ordered the rhubarbarian. It took the bartender 10 minuets to even get to his order. Once my boyfriend got his drink, I had placed an order for my drink. Took a sip of the rhubarbarian and it just tasted like juice. No alcohol at all. Took the bartender 10 more minutes to even start my drink. By this time I had told the bartender to cancel my order and for the check.
The bartender could tell we were were not satisfied with the service so he came around and gave us both free shots of tequila.
Overall, service here is a joke. Worst experience of my life.
Cocktails were like an over price fresh squeezed juice.
This was the second time that my boyfriend and I had came to this restaurant. We will never be coming here again.
However, love the bar area and outdoors seating.
My boyfriend and I have been to Flipside a few times. The first few times we went, we were happy with the service. The fried peppers were outstanding. And any burger patty can be replaced with a turkey or veggie patty, which is a plus, since I prefer turkey.
Our last visit was a bit disappointing though. We went in after a visit to the gym, and I was famished. In the past, the burgers have been satisfying, so we decided to share with a salad as a side. Our waitress only addressed my boyfriend, and overall was very inattentive. We had much better service in our previous visits!
When the burger came out, my boyfriend noted how the patty seemed very similar to what we buy from Costco. They were much different than what we had experienced before. I was half way through my meal, when he pointed out the patty was also burnt. I would have said something, but the waitress never came back to check on us, and as I said before, I was famished. Overall, a very disappointing experience, and my feeling is that as they get more established, more changes like the Costco-like turkey patties will be implemented.
It was my girlfriends birthday and we wanted to celebrate her day with Flipside's birthday week. Â We had drinks and their Flipside Burger at the bar and it was very good. Â The environment was great with DJ playing and placed was packed. Â They served cake (which was excellent) and just had a great experience. Â My girlfriend was happy and Flipside made it a special day for her. Â We will definitely visit again (and again!)
Review Source:Have been here twice, once was to sit outside with friends for drinks and apps..not bad, but it was probably the company I was in that won me over then. Second time went with family...I ordered the Lorraine burger which had a fried egg and it was good. The other people were not impressed at all with their meal. NO GLUTEN FREE hamburger buns or salad dressing for my daughter who has to eat GF, so it was very hard for her to eat there. Very pricey meal for hamburgers.
Review Source:I usually only come here for the poppers and they are almost always fantastic with one exception when they were all burnt and shriveled. They also have pretty bomb shakes. On this visit I was bringing a lady friend who wanted to try the bacon caramel shake which I had recommended. It had always been great in past visits...big chunks of bacon and lots of caramel. This time the bacon was chopped to tiny particles and more of a bacon sand then chunks. Not nearly as pleasant. We didn't finish the shake as the flavor was just too muddled. Also the shake glasses aren't that big and they don't bring out the extra in a metal cup...which I always think is a nice touch. They do have grass fed burgers but its $5 extra and by time u add bacon and cheese you have a $20 burger. Along with your seven dollar shake and your $3 to upgrade your fries...your going home with a chunk out of your wallet.
Review Source:My friend suggested burgers at this place for lunch since we rarely see each other. Â I ordered the Texan with a liter of Stella (which soon turned into 2 liters of Stella's) and the special fries (which I can't remember the name of it). Â We sat outside since the weather was perfect for a late lunch early dinner meal. Â The tables indoors were full and the tables outside were all taken, so we decided on the latter: Â The large comfy couches. Â Although we were, as a whole, a table of three, we managed to take a large seating area with a faux table to dine on. Â I waiter was cool, always had something funny to say and rarely bothered us but with the occasional "refill?" Â Sadly, we were periodically bother by other people trying to squat in on our eating area, which was totally fine since we had a large couch free... but when one of my friends went the the latrine, a family of three came up and asked us if we were using the other couch. Of course I said yes, that a friend was sitting there... so they basically invited themselves into taking the whole couch... psshh. Â My burger wasn't all that exciting. Â I mean, it's nearly similar to the western BBQ from Red Robins, the one liter that turned into two tasted a lot less then alcoholic, and the only thing that I can take away from this place is that they had pretty decent fries. Â
Considering that I'm not from Santa Rosa and I'm completely unaware of the culture of this community - I still stand by with the invasion of space when it came to that family of three that took over my friend's spot. Â I'm pretty sure that common courtesy would of stopped them from taking over our dinning experience... but whatever. Â My advice, if there aren't any seats available to accommodate your party outside and your left with the couches... make sure your fat ass takes up all the space (or your belongings) to prevent jerk offs from intruding on your dinner.
A friend wanted to meet here so that's the ONLY reason I returned. Cold fries served with grilled cheese. Over priced and under delivered. The concept had potential but totally missed the mark. Will NEVER be back. The mopping while customers were still here was just a bonus. -- at Flipside Bar & Burger http://bit.ly/106Ylpj
Review Source:Wow, I'm surprised by all the bad reviews! I haven't had a burger yet (Asian chicken salad the first time, BLT the next--I'd have both again), but the two times I've been I really enjoyed it. Nice, attentive servers, tasty food. Not breaking any culinary barriers, but a good meal in a fun place.
Review Source:I've passed by Flipside many times, and I've always noticed the busy, sunny patio that seems to call to those of us just walking by. Â The atmosphere is truly enticing. Â And, in the summer, they open all the front windows, making the mood of the diner-style booths even more relaxing and fun.
I had heard a lot of not-so-good reviews from friends, and the curiosity got the best of me. Â I HAD to try it out myself. Â We pretty much ordered all over the menu. Â I had a glass of the bubbly, which was actually pretty good for the house. Â It was crisp and dry, refreshing as I needed it. Â What better to pair with bubbly than a crispy fried appetizer! Â A true Southern gal, I had to try to "snookies delight"--crispy beer battered pickles, served with ranch. Â They were pretty good. Â The batter wasn't the most exciting (I prefer mine with a bit of buttermilk in the batter), but they definitely did the trick. Â
My husband had a turkey burger with a side salad and an adult milkshake (Vanilla and Bourbon). Â The burger looked delicious. Â I know Flipside gets some flack because of the size of their burgers, but seriously, nobody needs a burger larger. Â I know it's the American way to be impressed with the size of food, but it shouldn't be. Â The burgers are a good size. Â My husband and his larger-than-adult sized friend both had satisfying burgers. Â
Now for the shake-- quite the creamy goodness of any shake. Â Supposedly it had some adult sauciness, but you couldn't taste it. Â Some may prefer that. Â We were kinda hoping for a more adult/Bourbon taste for $11.
Also, because of the atmosphere and the super cozy diner-feel, I definitely suggest Flipside invest in some malt for these adult milkshakes. Â Our lovely server said we were not the first to ask about it. Â Malt and diner-style gourmet= perfection.
Should have trusted other reviews in that Flipside does NOT serve a very good burger. Â Very overpriced for what you get, burger was small, greasy, and bland bland BLAND. I am not a fan of adding salt but the hamburger patty had no taste at all. The quality of meat actual meat was good . Â The only real positive thing about the burger was the bun which was tasty but the patty was so small I was screaming "Where's the beef!"
Waffle fries were decent but a little greasy, my wife and I shared the Miss Muffett cheese curds. The breading on the curds was good but all the cheese had been cooked out with some of it gluing the curds together and the rest of it must have been left in the frier. The garlic marinara that came with the curds was excellent and the service was great. They seem to have some good recipes and ideas but need to find someone that can cook and implement some of the unique menu items. They really need to either lower the price or even better increase the size of the burgers. I do not drink so I cannot comment on the bar.
For vegetarians, you would think there would be a half way decent vegie burger...this is Sonoma County after all! But alas, no. I had their Ratatouille "burger", and it was sloppy, it fell apart while trying to eat it, and it was greasy. It was such a disappointment!
Came back 3 months later for their spiked milkshakes and got the "campfire". It was terrible. I don't know who thought that soggy graham crackers with alcohol was a good idea, but that person must have done a little too much "taste testing". My milkshake was a whole lot of alcohol with very little milk or anything else.
I think the most exciting thing this place has going for it are the waiters fancy-schmancy credit card swipers. yay.
Mediocre. Overpriced with small portions. When paying $13 for a burger I hope for a bigger, more authentic burger. The patty was small and tasted like it was shipped frozen from China. And the fries were highly disappointing.
On the plus side, they have reasonably priced drinks, a good happy hour and a fun atmosphere.
The place is clean. The service is friendly. They have very nice outside seating. I've been here three times and the food takes a long time.
When we got our order the last time everything was dry. The burger and bun the fish sandwich the fries (especially thr fries) and the chicken strips.
We did order and appetizer of onion rings and they came to out table right away. They were hot and really good. The first two visits here the food was a little better but the food getting to us took a long time.
Two of the three times they didn't seem that busy so I don't know what takes so long. I've never run a restaurant so I don't know but maybe they have the food waiting too long after it's made before bringing it to the table and that's why its dry. Â I keep wanting to like this place. Maybe if I just stick to the onion rings I could give a better rating. It looks like they have a nice bar anyway.
The service is great, the fried pickles were tastey and the placce has been well put together to suit people who like the restaurant look, the trendy hang out, outdoor setaing, and full bar with tv monitors. The grass fed beef burger I had was far more tastey than any burger I have had in quite some time.
Review Source:Decent, simple Burger, Shakes and Fries place. Â
I was sort of expecting a "better-burger" type place, but it is a "burger" place. Â OK burger at an OK price, including fries the price is 8 bucks. Â About what you would pay at Brody's or Phyllis's, but more of an actual sit down place.
It was quick, service was OK, and the burger, while not large or extraordinary in any way, was pretty good. On the food side, I'd only object to the bun, which seems a little too flimsy to hold the burger and absorb and juices while not falling apart.
If only I could give it zero stars.. I'm surprised I haven't seen Guy Fiery hangin' out at the bar in there..
1) 'Snookie's Delight' should never, ever be a menu item. I don't care how much she likes fried pickles.
2) When delivering a shake, never set it on the raised fire-pit, inches from the flame. That's..... that's just stupid.
3) Truffle Fries should always have some element of truffle on them. Hey, it could be oil, salt, whatever... but it certainly shouldn't be garlic and Parmesan. It definitely shouldn't be garlic and Parmesan on your second try, after a complaint regarding the lack of truffle-i-ness is received. And, most importantly, don't mention how you "Can smell that TRUFFLE!!" Just waftin' off the third botched order.
My point is that this place is a joke, and should be treated like one.
Have eaten here twice, with consistent results.
Though not exceptional in any way that I could find, Flipside is convenient and friendly, and makes reasonably edible food. I have eaten two burgers of different varieties here, and both were not bad, but neither were better than what I could get at a decent fast-food restaurant (though to be fair the lamb burger would probably not make it onto a fast-food menu).
I do appreciate the effort behind their beverage program, which features interesting cocktails (though not with premium liquor or juice) and a broad (albeit pedestrian) variety of beers.
The service is its weakest link. Staffed by cute but clueless kids in t-shirts, you might have to wait for just about everything if the place is even moderately busy. Luckily, the waiters are charming and easy on the eyes, so the wait is not as annoying as it could be.
Basically, this place exceeds the lowest common denominator, but not by much. Come in with low expectations and you will not be disappointed. Convenient place to drop in for a quick bite before a movie.
How does it compare to 3rd Street (right across the courtyard)? Not badly. Less quirky/local than 3rd St, but with cocktails and a younger vibe. Food is less plentiful than 3rd St but also less heavy. Basically lighter/brighter/younger but not necessarily better or worse, per se.
I'd give the place 3 stars if it weren't for how terrible I felt about 2-3 hours after eating it. I was sick to my stomach for the rest of the night and the entire next day.
I ordered the Gobbler which was their turkey burger. It sounded delicious with fresh cranberry sauce and then a sweet potato sauce. When I got it; it was a small turkey burger on a bun with the tiniest amount of cranberry sauce that looked like BBQ sauce on the bottom, and then a tiny amount of sweet potato sauce on top of the burger. No lettuce, tomato, onion, or anything. I had to ask if it was what I ordered because it was so disappointing. Could have made a better turkey burger at home in a heart beat! Fries were decent, Â but nothing to rave about. Service was semi-slow for a Saturday lunch and our server was very awkward. I had heard the beer selection was great, but I wasn't impressed. The beer mugs are also heavy and thick. I didn't really enjoy drinking my beer out of it. I definitely won't be in a hurry to go back.
I did try my friends bloody mary which was made with pepper vodka and it was very tasty!
Meeehhhhhhhh. Seriously not that great.
The food was ok - but not for the price you pay. And the service wasn't great either.
We took a group of 6 to the Flipside this last Sunday. I called ahead to make a reservation since I wasn't sure how crowded it would be for Sunday lunch and the website says to call for groups of 6 or more.
When we got there right at noon for our reservation, my name was not written down and they didn't have a table ready for us. Luckily this wasn't too much of a problem since it wasn't busy at all. The only reason we had to wait for just a minute was for the hostess to figure out which table to seat us at and get the menus. But - since I called and made a reservation, not sure why we had to wait at all.
We were also informed that we wouldn't be able to order for a few minutes because the kitchen was in process of switching over from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu. Ummmm, I'm sorry - it's noon. If there was some sort of switch that needed to happen, then you should have done it BEFORE lunch time so that people could order lunch at lunch time. But maybe that makes too much sense.
It took a little while for the waiter to make his way over to us. He was nice enough, but not super attentive during the whole meal. In my opinion, you should never have to ask for more water at a restaurant.
We ordered a couple of appetizers while we waited for the last two in our party to arrive. The fried pickles and fried cheese curds. Both good. The cheese curds were a bit spicy, which I don't think it mentioned in the menu. But good none the less.
By the time our whole group was there and we were ready to order it was about 12:20 or so. When I ordered I asked for soup instead of fries with my Gobbler sandwich (with no mayo). I was informed that the chef had JUST decided what the soup of the day was going to be and was still in process of making it, so it might not be ready for my lunch. Again... shouldn't this be something you figure out BEFORE lunch time, so that your lunch customers can have soup too?
When our meals were brought out, mine had the mayo which I asked not to have. Sorry, but I really really hate mayo - it grosses me out. I can't just scrape it off and be good. So I asked for a new one. The waiter did apologize. He should have also told me how long it would be for them to remake my sandwich! Everyone else had finished eating by the time my new meal was brought out. Luckily the soup was ready and so I was able to eat that while waiting for my sandwich.
All in all it was kind of disappointing. If you can find a Red Robin - WAY better.
Oh yeah, and one last thing. Not that I'm a huge sports person, but my hubby and bro-in-law are. (And even this is like a "duh" to me.) It's Sunday afternoon and on the two large flat screens behind the bar they had on NASCAR on one, and an infomercial for the Magic Bullet on the other. It's SUNDAY. Can we have some football please? And when I asked if they could put it on they were like... oh yeah, we were about to do that.
What evs. Won't be back. But glad I tried it so that I don't have to feel bad about not eating there.
Been here twice, pretty bad service both times.. Waitress never came around enough.
First visit they didn't bring my husbands beer until he was halfway done with his meal. Second time it seemed not as busy but took twice as long for the waitress to take our order.. Then when the food came they brought no utensils or condiments. (we were sitting outdoors on a couch)
If you want to sit outside and there isn't a table, don't order food.. It's extremely hard to eat..
Food is average, nothing exceptional..
They got better. Â
I went on a Sunday at 2 this time. Â Figured I'd give them every chance this time. Â
Service was good, they seem to have worked out the frustrating aspects of the iPod order taking. Â The waitress was away with our order almost immediately. Â
I ordered the Casablanca (Lamb burger with appropriate condiments and spread). Â This burger is well thought out, and the flavors compliment each other well. Â But I asked for med-rare, and it was thoroughly med-well. Â
My gf got a chicken burger. Â It was good enough, but overall unremarkable. Â
The bottom line is the place has gotten much better in managing to get service right. Â But their food just doesn't justify their prices. Â I won't be back.
I was craving a good hamburger so we thought we would give this place a shot. We don't live in Santa Rosa anymore and my mom said maybe we should try this place.... She hadn't been here yet however. Well my brother had his dog with him so we asked if the dog could sit next to us at the table. We were told that he could, so she sat us at a table on the 3rd street side where it opens up to the outside.
After seating us, she changed her story to say that now the dog needed to be tied up outside next to the street. 3rd street has a decent amount of traffic so didn't want to do that. No problem, we can work around that. I then asked for a table on the outside patio area. She said the dog could be next to us there so that sounded fine and I said we'll just sit there then. Her response, "like I have already told you 5 times, we don't have a table big enough for 5 on the patio." Â That was the first time that info made it my way so it was news to me. She made this statement with so much attitude and rudeness we were all pretty much in shock.
We decided to stay and sit in their outside couch area. We should have just left so our fault on that one but we like to give second chances. Overall the food was only ok, nothing to brag about.
The manager apologized for the hostess behavior but didn't sound to sincere about it. To top it all off, as we were leaving they put two tables together on the patio for another party. The rudeness brought my rating down to one star. had our service been great and the staff polite I would have given a much better rating.
