Pleasantly surprised with this place. Really good customer service. The lady there made conversation with us and was really friendly with everyone there.
They have burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, fries, onion rings and a large selection of ice cream and candy toppings. The best thing is that everything here is cheap and better quality than fast food! Only thing i have to say is that the burgers are a little too perfectly shaped if you know what I mean (I suspect they're probably frozen). The burger itself tasted a little bland but hey, I can't complain they're a new business hopefully they'll upgrade when more cash comes their way!
I ordered a King burger with cheese and bacon. While ordering, I thought I was going to receive a skimpy burger. Boy was I wrong! They use fresh lettuce and thick tomatoes and the bun and burger is bigger than others I've seen. Good local place for a burger and I'm already thinking what I'm getting on my next visit.
I was out in Park Ridge visiting my in-laws, and the name and cute little penguin were enough to make me want to stop in. Â
I was happy with the service, the prices and the product.  My husband and I shared a medium strawberry shake and a medium root  beer float.  Each were around $3 which I think was very reasonable.  The shake was delicious.  The root beer float probably should have been in a bigger cup, because there was a generous portion of ice cream (which I am not complaining about at all), but it left very little room for root beer.
I really liked that they had multiple sizes for their shakes, floats, etc. Their size small was genuinely a small, which is nice when you want a shake to act as a dessert and not an entire meal. Â I definitely plan to stop back in next time I am in the area.
My fiancee and I stopped by the Frosty Penguin while we were out shopping in the suburbs last weekend to check it out. Â Her Mom is from the area near Park Ridge, so we decided to give it a shot. Â We were both greated by the owners immediately upon entering, even though they were helping other customers ahead of us. We both ordered burgers and fries for lunch and she had a Frost Bite shake for desert. Â I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised by the food! Â For a fast food experience, the burgers were excellent! Â They were cooked perfectly and were very large for the price. Â I believe I got a 2/3 pould double burger for less than six dollars. Â Well above average for a quick stop food and ice cream joint. Â My fiancee got a small Butterfinger Frost Bite for desert and according to her it was great. Â (I'm lactose intolerant so I am taking her word for it). Â The owners mentioned it was their first week open. Â A job well done in my opinion. Â I work with alot of small business owners and know what a difficult undertaking it is to start a food business. Â I know in the summer months they will most likely be a popular food and ice cream destination. Â The Frosty Penguin is off to a great start and I am sure to go back next time I am visiting the Mother in Law.
Review Source:Near the corner of Busse & Potter in a long-forgotten corner of Park Ridge, the latest attempt at opening a restaurant was undertaken June 1st with the grand opening of Frosty Penguin. Just last year, the place was a rather promising Piazza Cafe, only to close months later. Being too far from any park, school and more than a block from the Dee Road Metra station puts it at a disadvantage competitively.
Still, with fingers crossed, we headed out to see this latest grand opening on only its second day of operation. We stopped in near 8 pm and found several other customers outside, with even more inside. Being a fan of DQ dipped cones, we ordered 2 vanilla cones dipped in chocolate, only to find out the menu item was unavailable since the dipping stuff never made it in time for the opening. You'd think they'd temporarily remove the item from the menu till it's available. So we revised our choices and picked plain old vanilla or chocolate/vanilla twist cones instead.
The owner can use a little practice making them, as his cones seemed a little unbalanced and inconsistent in serving size. Being a former fast food employee myself some 20+ years ago, I know there's some art to the technique of filling an ice cream cone elegantly, and this wasn't it. Since their small is truly a small, like child-sized tiny, we got mediums. Lined up side by side, I had 3 different ice cream sizes despite all of them supposedly being medium sized. I pointed out the "runt of the litter" cone, which was way too small. The owner hesitated for a moment and then realized how much smaller it was. He remedied the problem by filling a new, larger cone.
The ice cream was smooth, not icy and the cone definitely fresh. Yes, they have rough spots to work out and hopefully they get their chocolate dipping stuff for next time we come here. For now, they don't measure up to the Park Ridge Dairy Queen about 3 miles away and they certainly won't stop us from going the extra distance to Glenview Dairy Bar once in a while. In case the owners are reading this, I have one plea for them: "We're only a little more than a half mile away. Please, oh please work out the kinks with your service and we promise we'll become regulars over the summer."
I hope they last and become a favorite place that can become a neighborhood tradition. For now, I can't put them on an equal level with the DQ in town or Lisa's Italian Ice.
Frosty Penguin also has burgers and fries. While we can say we had some fries, I haven't tried their burger yet. We may give it a try for lunch or dinner one day.
