Go to here, get the Guinness Beef Stew.  I don't care how hot it is out side, get it anyway.  You'll thank me.

We discovered this pub by accident when we were driving through Gettysburg. I really liked the atmosphere, the bar tenders, and--the beer!  Its the only place I have found in the area serving Kilkeney beer, which I discovered last year at an Irish Festival.  My date and I opted to split a sandwich since we were on our way to a late dinner and it was very good.  We will definitely visit the next time we're in the area!

We chose to eat here yesterday based on online reviews. It was busy, because we are in full swing of the tourist season right now. While we awaited a table we decided to get a drink at the bar, which was not crowded. We sat at the bar for 15 to 20 minutes and the bartended flat out ignored us the entire time. Weird.

When we were seated we ordered some beers. I got the Edgar Alan Poe beer, the Raven. So neat. The waitress was great. Much nicer than the barkeep. The food was okay. I liked the onion soup. Very sweet, so it's not like french onion soup. We ordered mussels for an appetisers. They were okay, but heavy on the salt and cooked a little too long, so they were chewy and stringy. Got the lamb burger. The burger itself was cooked well, but not seasoned and the tomato tapenade was not a good match. I sound like I am being nitpicky, but I just don't see what all the hype is about. Nothing was delicious, and I think for the prices it should be.

If you are staying in Gettysburg or just passing through and would like a hearty meal and some drinkables for grown-ups, this is where you have to go.

After freshening up after a long tour of historical Gettysburg, The Guy(TM) and I made our way to Garryowen with the intention of taking in a decent meal and no more than two drinks. I ordered the beef stew, which was nothing less than perfect for a rainy day, and he had the Ulster-style fry which leaves no one hungry later. After the satisfying meal, we each chose two drinks from the impressive list of Irish whiskeys. I can't remember what The Guy(TM) had, but I will always remember that I ordered something called Feckin. Everyone should have a drink called Feckin at some point in their lives. After we had our two drinks, The Guy(TM) asked for the check, and I excused myself to the restroom. When I came back, he had the check folded in his hand and shaking his head, he was saying, "I can't believe this. I REALLY can't believe this!" Expecting to have to kick in an exorbitant half of the check, I asked in a tone of dread, "What...?" He held the check to my face... and immediately and excitedly suggested we have another round or two of whiskeys!

Seriously... they are the purveyors of Powers and Paddy's on the CHEAP!

Our very awesome waiter was all too happy to reopen our tab. And two more whiskeys later, we left happy, sated, and ready to stumble forth to a place to sit outside and smoke our stogies.

I've never been to Ireland, but this seems what an authentic pub might feel like.  Lots of original brick and wood, pints, whiskey, bangers and mash....and more American faire as well.  Had dinner once, and some drinks the next afternoon.  Reasonable prices, friendly staff, and a note on the jukebox instructing patrons NOT to play Creed.
    :)

If you love greasy food that's soaked in alcohol, then you've hit the jackpot here. I don't say this to talk down on Garryowen, but just to forewarn people who need something different. If you're vegan or vegetarian, the veggie burger they have here is the best one I've had in Gettysburg. I don't know if it's vegan, but it's closer to it if you cut the cheese. It also may be the only thing on the menu without alcohol in it, so if you have an alcohol allergy, you may be able to eat this, but I'd ask if they use separate cookware for it. Enjoy, and get your veg on!

After reading all the reviews on Yelp I was excited to stop by and try this place. My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere, as it was very quite and eclectic. Overall the food was OK. I had the Fish and Chips and my girlfriend had The Gary Owen Burger. Both were good but nothing special. Overall we both enjoyed the experience. Oh, the wait staff was great too.

Looked at virtually all the reviews on YELP for a decent restaurant and the choices in Gettysburg are slim.

I went with the majority on this one and chose this spot. Not quite sure what all the hype is about regarding the food. Service was appropriate. The appetizer sampler was somewhat "puny" for $15. It had two mozzarella sticks, four wings, one Scotch egg sliced in half, two onion rings, and two jalepeno poppers.

I had SHEPHERD'S PIE:Our own family recipe from County Armagh, Ireland.
Ground beef & traditional vegetables in a rich gravy, topped with lightly browned mashed potato. $10.95. It was OK. A lot of potato, and I didn't find much meat. The gravy was a bit strong and kicked up my GERD.

Wife had the BLT, and ate half of it. When going home I asked what she thought of it and she said "plain," didn't care for the flavor of the bacon, and felt she can make a better BLT at home. Bit surprised she switched her order last minute from the reuben sandwich.

Daughter had BANGERS & MASH: Guinness onion sausages on top of seasoned redskin mashed potatoes covered with sautéed onions & a rich brown gravy. $10.95. I sampled it and it was tasty. Guest had GUINNESS BEEF STEW Tender pieces of beef marinated in Guinness with carrots & onions. Slow cooked in a rich sauce, served in a sourdough breadbowl. $10.95. He seemed to like it (was he just being polite?) but at the same time complimented daughter on some beef stew she had made for him recently, so I took that as "meh" type of experience.

The bread pudding was on point!

I had the dark house draft beer...excellent.

What an awesome place!! I stopped here because it got such great Yelp reviews and I'm really glad I did. The place has a very warm atmosphere and when we went (on a Sunday late afternoon), there was live Irish music, which is always a great touch. The beer selection was good and very tasty as well. My two friends and I each got traditional Irish dishes (Ulster Fry, Guinness beef stew, and Shepard's Pie) and they were all very, very good. Definitely a great place to stop by in Gettysburg!

My fiance and I (I am writing on Chris' behalf) went to this place on a Monday night when we were passing through town on a road trip. It was AWESOME.  We had no reservation and had to wait about 15 minutes.  It would have been worth it to wait 2 hours.  The decor was pub cozy - broken up between rooms in an old property.  Eating at the bar would have been nice, too, but we were in a small table in the back of the ground floor room, where the musicians would have been if they'd had live music that night. They seemed a bit short staffed as the bartender had to greet us and ask the number in our party...but even that could not detract from the awesomeness. Our waiter was great. They had an extensive beer list. The menu had so many items we'd never seen before and every single one sounded delicious. We started with the homemade old bay seasoned potato chips. They were phenomenal....just a tiny bit chewy on the inside, and yet still crunchy with that awesome old bay flavor. Then my fiance had the lamb burger. It was like eating velvet.  I had the mixed green salad topped with rolls of lox stuffed with crab. That may sound odd (as many of the menu items do), but it was awesome.  The crab was in large, fresh chunks and the strong flavor of the lox complimented it wonderfully. Their dressing was also delicious.  I imagine everything on that menu was as incredible as our dishes. Inventive, and sometimes simple - yet complete yummyness! You could eat a lot of delicious fatty things if you wanted, but there were lots of options if you wanted to watch your diet, too. We can't recommend this place enough.

Had a very nice dinner last Friday, our first in Gettysburg.  The space was bright and not cramped; the server was friendly and suggested the goat cheese ravioli with smoky tomato cream sauce and micro greens-certainly not standard pub fare- and it was excellent!    We always appreciate an adventurous chef...

I was completely impressed with how delicious The Garryown Irish Pub food was! I spent the day in Gettysburg and didn't know where to eat, so we settled on the Garryowen Irish Pub and were soooo happy with our decision. Not only does it have one of the best beer menus, but it also has the most authentic Irish fare menu I've ever seen outside of Ireland itself. The food was amazing and the environment was cute and comfortable. I would most definitely recommend this spot in Gettysburg and plan on going back just for the fish and chips!

I wish I lived closer to this place. Because I love it.

I came here relying on Yelp reviews. It didn't disappoint. The place is quaint, tucked away so not everyone notices it. You can easily pass it by. But don't. The atmosphere is just so comfortable and homey and everyone was so nice. We enjoyed a Magner's while waiting for the rest of the party. The bartenders were nice, helpful, and everything you could hope for.

Food wise, service was a bit slow, but the food was so hot and obviously made fresh I didn't care. She kept our drinks refilled while we waited and made sure we were happy and updated. In the end, waiting a bit more for the fish and chips was worth it - it was hot and amazing. The fish and chips and the beef stew battled for being amazing, but if I had to pick one, the beef stew is my suggestion. SO yummy!

I didn't like the Irish Onion Soup actually! I found it too sweet and the bowl made it hard to eat. It's not made in a crock either. The Guiness turns into an almost sugary taste in this. It's weird.

It's not over priced like my other place I visited in Gettysburg (mistake not looking on Yelp BEFORE). It's reasonable, yummy, and has a great selection of beer. I'll be back when I'm in Gettysburg for sure.

Good food is hard to find in Gettysburg, and it can be found at the GO. I usually get one of their soups, wee bit of fish 'n chips, or the veggie burger. If I ate meat, I'd be all over the lamburger and everything else. I've only heard good things.

As a bar, this place is great, too. Late night menu, but you can't order after 10:30pm. Cash only for tabs under $10, some good options for what's on tap, slightly cheaper than across the street at the Parrot, and live music often. This place can get really LOUD. Musicians are always welcome at this place. Later in the evening, you'll probably have to walk through the smokers at the door to get in.

There's a small bar and more comfortable seating upstairs, but it usually fills up quickly on the weekends.

This was a fantastic find for our trip. The food and atmosphere were spot on. The upstairs bar was also a unique treat with live music made it even better. We are planning another trip to the region for the summer and this will surely be a stop on our list.

The Irish Onion Soup is amazing. It makes a great change from the French version. It has a hint of the Guinness and the sweetness of the onions matches it wonderfully.
The plentiful helping of Bangers a Mash was sinful. A thick savory gravy surrounds a mound of mashed potatoes topped with Irish sausage and onions. I'm in love.
    Go go go.

Excellent home-like pub.  Irish decor and a casual atmosphere.  I had the "wee bit" of fish and chips and it was excellent, especially paired with a Guinness!  The wee bit might seem like too little at first but after giving it a little to settle down it was just enough.

Had the pulled pork sandwich and loved every bite all the way to the end.  My husband had the fish and chips and did the same.  Prices were a touch higher than I was expecting but it was also a nicer atmosphere and better service than I was expecting so, it was well worth it.

We stopped in because of the great Yelp reviews and were not disappointed!

A great lunch spot in Gettysburg. There's not much going on in town but if you are ever in this part of the woods, definitely stop by this pub. The gaelic shrimp and house chili (available as a special) are fantastic.

Stopped here for dinner a few weeks ago after it was recommended from the manager at Adams county winery.  Which is a great place to swing by and taste a few wines and buy a bottle on your way.  Great atmosphere!  I can say the same thing for here.  The bartender was great and helped with our decisions.  We had been grabbing bites throughout the day, so I went with the vanilla squash soup-amazing!!  Plus, they're quail egg appetizer,,which was also great, just a little small. But, I believe that was our first quail egg tasting.  My boyfriend had the scallops, which were recommended and also delish.  The only thing is, we wished we had gone straight Irish considering the place and also seeing all the plates leave the kitchen.  Looked great!  So, we do plan to swing by again and go for the fish n chips or bangers!!

    Primal review #4

This place has some great grub. Some may think that eating primal is hard at an Irish pub but the options that they have here are delicious, I think. Truth be told my wife and I both had the steak salads and they met our expectations. This isn't your normal pub fare. The quality and imagination of the menu is some of the best that I've seen in an irish pub. Good job guys continue to bring good food to Gettysburg.

Wonderful atmosphere, cozy time with my girl.  Guinness hit the spot.  First time trying a Scotch egg--awesome, didn't see that coming.  Loved the Shepherd's Pie.  The beef stew was good, but too salty, too much broth, and needed mashed potatoes desperately.  Needs more dessert options, I was craving scotch whiskey bread pudding, they did not deliver. To elaborate, there was exactly one dessert item on the menu--cheesecake--and that didn't fit the bill at all.  So, we walked 3 blocks to Lincoln Diner (see my review of that!).

I'm not from Gettysburg. I don't live in Gettysburg. I don't even visit often. BUT I've been to enough pubs and taverns to know that the Garryown's fish and chips are so fresh and crispy and delicious that I ate it ALL. Okay maybe my friend and I split it- and thankfully so because they brought out an entire fish- it was off the plate. Poured some vinegar and squeezed the lemons... dipped my fries in ketchup and tobasco. MMmmm mmmm! We had a little salad before this and she tried the french onion soup- large bowl with two little chunky slices of french bread draped in cheese. We sat at the bar and toasted with our Woodchuck cider.

Oh yes and I almost forgot...save your receipt! If you want to check out the goodies at A Little Irish Too down the street, you can save 10% with your receipt.

My wife and I decided to try this place out while celebrating our anniversary.  We're glad we did.  The atmosphere was warm and inviting.  The hostess told us that the wait would be about an hour.  They have two bars; one downstairs and one upstairs.  The downstairs bar was packed, so we went to the upstairs bar.  Great beer selection.  Guiness is the headliner, but there was also a large selection of microbrews.  I had the porter.  It hit the spot.

About an hour later the hostess came upstairs and told us our table was ready.  The main dinning room was packed.  Our server was a nice guy.  They definitely dress down at this place.  He was in jeans and a flannel shirt.  Okay.  It fit with the theme of casual and fun.  We ordered the Scotch egg and Irish Onion soup as starters.  My wife ordered the fish and chips for her entree, and I ordered bangers and mash.  The only criticism I have of this place was the wait.  It took 30 minutes for our starters to arrive and another 20 minutes after that for our entrees.  There were only two servers for both dinning rooms.  Terribly under staffed.  This is not a place for a quick meal.  If come on a busy night you'll need to budget at least three hours.

The Scotch egg was fantastic!  It had great texture.  We'll definitely be ordering it again.  The Irish onion soup had great presentation, but it came out almost cold.  The entrees were a home run.  My wife loved the fish and chips.  The batter on the haddock was crispy and flavorful.  The malt vinegar on the table was the perfect condiment.  The bangers and mash is the perfect Irish comfort food.  The combination of mashed potatoes, sausage, and rich brown gravy told my stomach that all was well with the world.  We were too stuffed to try dessert.  Maybe next time.

I sure like this place. Had requisite number of real Irish lassies serving the swill. Went a couple of times, sat at bar. Drank Guinness and nice pours of bourbon
. Had a shepherds pie that was piled high with nice, greasy, beefy sauteed onions on top of the big-ass pile of smashed taters and beef. Perfect.

The place didn't seem that busy but the service was pretty slow. The waitress explained that they had a party of ten and that was slowing things down. A 90 minute wait just because there was a large group? The food was pretty good but that is a pretty crazy wait just because a large group showed up. Goddess forbid two large groups show up.

Waiting time aside, the food was good considering the lack of options in the area. I was in town for a conference and the food was delightful. The Shepherd's Pie was great and the fish and chips were awesome. Nice flavor. Not too much batter.

Bar selection was pretty good. I had a Magners and a Yueng. That's all I need.

Four stars relative to the other options in the area.

Why did I give them 1 star..... well I was dining alone, bar seats full with mostly people standing instead of sitting in their chair and if i asked if anyone was in the chair they snootly say YES. So the hostess sat me at, guess what,  the worst table right next to the front door so i had every Tom Dick and Harriet looking at me and bumping into my chair.  The service was eh.  My waitress catered more to the party of 5 next to me who sat after me. My money is not as good as theirs? I was never offered a second drink. When I said no to dessert, the waitress dropped the check and disappeared. I would have gotten another drink, but when she dropped the check, i still had some of my first one.

The Bangers and Mashed was good, but definately premade bagged mashed potatoes and powered gravy. Most of their food comes in premade/bagged or frozen. Nothing really fresh there.

And for an Irish pub, there was NO/ZERO/NADA music playing, not even piped in. At least have some background music huh?

Any way, if your alone DO NOT GO HERE, unless you want to be treated like a loser single person. I was alone because i was traveling. DUH.

Friendly staff. The service was a bit slow, but the place was pretty busy and we weren't in a hurry. The Shepard's Pie was awesome, big chucks of ground meat and veggies topped with fluffy, creamy mashed potatoes. We also sampled the Guiness chocolate stout cake AND the Bailey's cheese cake, both of which were home made and delicious.

This place only has street parking, which can be kind of a pain to find during the summer months as there are lots of restaurants and bars in the area.

The Friday night we were there, they had live music upstairs from 8-10 and downstairs from 10-12.

Nice little pub in this historical town. It has street parking and is away from the big roundabout center of the downtown. They had a great selection of beer, but I was there for lunch and had lots of walking to do later, so I stuck with water. The inside has an old pub feel with a nice sized bar.

The food was excellent. I got the sausage sandwich because it was different than what I see at most other places. I wasn't disappointed. The fries were excellent as well.

It would've been more enjoyable with beer, but it was a great lunch. It hit the spot.

After eating at a few different places in Gettysburg on our vaca, this place was a sight for sore eyes.  They had the a/c kickin' thankfully since it felt like 102 degrees outside, cold beer, and good grub.  We ordered the kids cheeseburger sliders, the ruben, and a classic cheeseburger.  Everyone loved everything.  My cheeseburger was very flavorful, moreso than your typical pub burger.  The service was a little slow, but we were there for a late lunch so you know how that can go.

Bar looked like a fun spot to catch a game..

Had a few drinks here after having dinner elsewhere.  A great selection on tap & in bottles.  One of the few places where I've been able to find a cider other than Strongbow or Woodchuck on tap (and even finding those can be tricky).  Very reasonable pricing (4 beers/ciders for about $16 plus tip).  Comfortable seats at the bar and the friendly gal tending bar was great.  Only down side...having to smell all the delicious food coming out :)

Did overhear a patron saying that they make the best chicken & waffles for Sunday brunch...will have to add this to my to do list next time we are in the area.

I lived in England for several years and really loved some English meat pies and beer. In our area there are a few "Irish" pubs but none of them are truly Irish. The Garryowen Irish Pub is as close to Irish pubs as you can find in this area. Their menu is a combination of some authentic Irish and American dishes. The food they serve is delicious. The waiting staff is friendly and helpful. I had roasted pepper and crab bisque and salmon and crab salad and my husband had their shepards pie and we split an order of mozzarella sticks. Everything was very tasty and hot.
Their menu though was a little bit limited and I wish they added some more authentic dishes to it. Everyone here loves pot pies, why not to serve hot steak and ale pies or beef and gravy pies... I believe they would've been a hit. Otherwise I would definitely go back there again.
Great food, great service, great beer:)

After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to stop in.  Beer selection included Stone IPA on tap... big bonus points.  Staff was extremely friendly.  We (group of 5) got there early on Saturday (4PM) and had the whole back section of the bar to ourselves.  They did not hesitate to switch the TV over to the college football game of our choosing.  Food was not as good as I had expected but not bad.  My buddies ordered burgers and I had the fish and chips.  The mussel app. was amazing.

Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area.

Stopped in on a week day while touring the downtown area for lunch. They were doing some construction so we ate at the bar which was actually an interesting perspective. Our server was very lovely and even let us smell the cool absinthe bottle. I ordered the irish shrimp dish which was about six shrimp on garlic bread in a sauce. It was good but perhaps a bit heavy for lunch. Everyone else got burgers or fish and chips (which is huge) and all were happy with everything.

I would have liked to go back here and night and see the locals get a bit wild because it seemed like a place you could have a great time in, which makes it interesting that a party atmosphere pub would have such delicious food.

As my brother-in-law stated, "This would be a great place to get wasted." The atmosphere is exceptionally pubby. Whiskies and draft beers galore-I'd say that's a good start! We shared some apps: the sampler and Irish nachos. I'm typically turned off by silly TGI Friday's-type gimmicks, but holy crap those "nachos" were delicious! I could seriously eat a whole plate of them on my own. Next time we're visiting, maybe we'll try actual entrees... Or maybe we won't! ;-)

Service was totally weak, as there was only one server (the bartender) but when you're drinking and having a good time with good people, you can let that stuff slide a bit.

Came upon this pub after walking past the very busy pub on the circle downtown. We couldn't be happier with our choice to do so!

Opted to dine at the bar and were served promptly by the friendly bartender (her name escapes me at the moment!) She gave a nice overview of everything they had on draft and there were a good bit of brews to choose from. I opted for an apple cider ale and the hubby a black & red.

The food menu had some very tempting Irish fare including the bangers & mash, Guinness beef stew, among others. We had had a fairly large lunch earlier in the day and weren't looking for anything heavy, so we'll have to come back again sometime to sample those dishes! The bartender recommended the wee bit fish & chips, which ended up being perfect. Two pieces fried fish and small basket of fries were just thr right size. Coupled with a small salad (their ranch dressing was really good!) it was a rather nice dinner.

Bottom line: Good food for a good price! The drinks and service also made this place worth the visit. Give them a try the next time you're in Gettysburg! Livev music on the weekends sounds like it would be fun, too!

This place used to be a dive, but it was bought by actual Irish people and now has been completely revamped.  It is open later than most other establishments in Gburg, so this is where people will end up after everything else is closed.  Although there is a crowd of locals who never seem to leave...including my father.  *Ahem.*

In any case, they have local bands perform on a regular basis and have created a nice stage area where they keep a sound system hooked up and a bunch of instruments in case marauding musicians fancy playing a tune on any given evening.

They have a good selection of Irish and American beers, including Magner's cider, and some interesting whiskey I've never heard of.  Can't remember the name, but it was good!

Their food is pub food, but better than THE Pub, right up the street.  Cheaper, too.

It is a fun place to hang out.  The service is friendly and efficient and often amusing, because the owner will often have a few with his frequent flyers, and get a little rowdy.
