This place has recently had some minor renovations, I've been coming here for years. My 2 favorite nights are Thursdays karaoke and Saturday night which is their busiest night, the bartender Chelsea keeps it snackin' nice atmosphere and all around good bartenders. I definitely recommend this place.
Review Source:I've been to this divey, friendly, place a couple of time while visiting a friend who lives in town.
Minus: no beers on tap.
Plusses: *Very* reasonable drink prices. ($ 1.00 well drinks on Memorial Day weekend!), Good, friendly bartenders. A few decent top shelf liquors
Cash only. ATM on premises.
Quiet crowd when I was there, no fights. A 75 year old lady was celebrating her birthday.
Okay, I went there on a Sat night around 12:30 to grab a beer. Â The door guard wouldn't let me in, said that the doors closed at 1pm. Â I asked if I could get in anyways, being I didn't know, and that it wasn't 1. Â He said no, and actually got in my face. Â This pissing me off a bit, I asked to see the manager, at which he said 'Look mother-f*cker, I run this place tonight, get the hell out of here!' Â No joke! Â His convict looking buddy got up, both in my face, and I really thought I was going to get my ass kicked. Â The blonde coked-out looking frat guy was the main antagonist, and his pony-tailed convict friend was the back-up. Â The only reason I give this place 1 stars, is because I've been there on several occasions before then and actually had a good time. Â After that, I've never been back. Â I thought it was on the high end of dive-bars in Vallejo, but I'm not wasting my time going there for some twacked out steroid junkie to get in my face.
Review Source:Going down hill fast I can see. Lot more trouble lately since some bars in the area closed down. Also they charge on WEEKDAYS! I went in my friends car so I couldn't leave so I had to pay a door fee just to watch mediocre karaoke! You can't have your hat on backwards and they let people in that try to sell you dvds and roses. I'm not tripping about there hustle but I'm trying to sip on a drink when your trying to offer me 3 for 20 bootlegs all nite. Get outta here. Bartenders and doormen are cool but the one doorman that looks like an old stone cold steve austin is an asshole. Also I saw him feeling up some drunk female. Not a good look. Also make sure they charge you correctly when you buy a drink. The regular bartenders are cool but the older bartender they got working there on busy nites will try to get over on you. I ordered a gin and tonic twice on the same night from two different bartenders (same kind of gin both times). One charged me 4 and the other charged me 6. Asked for an explanation and he mugged me and walked away. Too bad until about a year and a half ago it was my favorite spot in Vallejo. Now I just go there to meet friends that already made the mistake of going there.
Review Source:Not living in V-town, it takes quite an alignment of the stars to get me to go out drinking there, but it so happened one night and I'm glad we made it into Gentleman Jim's. It really wasn't my typical crowd, but I managed to enjoy the evening without much fuss. Oddly, they have no beers on draft, bottles and cans only, and they're cash only, but have an ATM with the usual surcharge beside the bar.
The place is pretty large, the bar is long and there are some tables to the back of the room. There is an dance floor for those who can dance or had enough not to care that they can't, and a DJ was playing the same selection of songs everyone else does these days the night I stopped in. There is an enclosed smoking patio it toward the back, which was way nicer than being out in the rain that night. I noticed there was a swamp cooler back there as well, which probably makes it a lot more tolerable in the summer.
If you hadn't gathered already, I don't like to move it move it, so by the time the DJ was in full swing I made my exit. The taxi company was delayed, which afforded us the entertainment of the big drunk chick trying to start a fight with someone in a large group of other patrons as her smaller boyfriend attempted to get her to the car. After quite a few "C'mon baby, you don't want to do that," and other words of encouragement, she finally left without further incident, and even the bouncers couldn't keep a straight face.
Overall, a good evening. I'll be back one of these days...
Didn't expect much since it's in Vallejo.. Boy, was I wrong!
The price of alcohol is such a STEAL here! I usually get a Long Island Iced Tea but was suggested to get a Strong Island. Such a KILLER drink and worth your money! The people were cool and I felt welcomed being the stranger. They have plenty of TV's so I could catch up on some sports while tuning into some good hip-hop.
Minus 1 star how it only takes cash.. Other than that, this place is off the hook!
As far as nightlife goes in Vallejo, this place is real chill. I've never really been to other bars in 707 because of the bad reputation this town has of being kinda ghetto, but this place counteracts that stereotype.
It gets a 4 because for some reason they wouldn't let me wear a beanie, like they were keeping a lockdown on the place. I'm guessing it's to keep things orderly and ghetto freeness.
Other than that, the people were real cool and everyone there was just looking to have a good time. Don't know about the other drinks but PBR's in this place is $2.50 and they only accept cash. 2 pool tables in the back, a patio outside to smoke, a dancefloor (I've never seen it used) a stripper pole (I want to say it's a stripper pole) and you can play beer pong, karaoke, and local band nights on thursdays.
It's cool I stumbled on to this place because I've been looking for a local bar to kick it at and it's going to be this place.
update: so I've been coming here regularly for a couple of months now and just a couple of tips. It's hit or miss on fri -sat. Sometimes it's cracking and sometimes it's dead. Try to get the white dude bartender because he's cool and friendly and doesn't fluctuate the prices. The other bartenders seem to be dicks. Tues -Thurs are karaoke nights and they have their regulars for that. Pool at this place is intermediate and that's why I keep coming back. No sharks or killers here so you actually get to practice and get your money's worth.
Been here a few times, loved it both times.
The first time there was a great covers band playing. Â The second time I was there, it was Karaoke night and the singers actually were pretty decent (before the drinking began) the bouncer guy told me about a party bus to go see the Sharks play. Â Lots of friendly people and staff.
It still is a dive bar, though, but as far as dives go, this is a good one.
Alright, I'm gonna be honest. I really don't have any theories about how I end up at the diviest of bars, but I just do. I;ve gone from a bikini bar in sunnyvale to a total dive in SF's Mission where I literally witnessed guys going Tony Montana in the bathrooms. (And I don't mean shooting the place up). But hey, that's what makes me awesome and like my Yelp friend Michael H. once told me that "hey I get to review all the good places!" Â So here we are on my next stop of dives where I'm sure this will turn into a Yelp list someday. Gentleman Jim's. Here's what you need to know.
Two pool tables. They run the Vallejo Pool league here
HD tv's a plenty.
Wednesday night is Build your own steak n fix-in's nite (9.99, includes a beer as well. what a deal!)
Plenty of cougars on the prowl, so... bring your hunting gear, haha.
Saturday night, Master J.
This DJ lays down some hot tracks.
For some of the night he played a lot of Bon Jovi and Poison.
After all, it's Vallejo. Gotta cater to the crowd right?
But when he threw the hip hop on... I heard some real nice mixes I've never even heard on the radio or online.
Some new stuff with some classic beats.
I found myself bobbing my head all night, even while just sitting watching tv.
I guess it's just one of those things that you don't notice it unless it's good, and then when it is good you tell yourself "heeeeey, this sounds pretty damn good."
Drinks are fairly priced and service is quick.
I certainly would not mind "ending up" here again!
Almost forgot to add, there is a pole on the dance floor.
Nothing like a neck-tatted, halter top, 40 yr old cougar releasing her inner stripper...
