I came here with my boyfriend before to have lunch. They have really nice staff here.
I was checking the menu and at first, I was like.. "NO WAY. THEY'RE SO PRICY."
Then when the food came, I didn't even get to finish it, my bf and I got full and I we were just eating half of it.
So yeah, it was worth it. I love Gerry's Grill! Good Filipino food.
Although Gerry's Grill's Kare-Kare (even though it didn't have tripe), Grilled Liempo, Grilled Tuna Steak and Halo-Halo were all equally wonderful, I must say that its Achara (pickled vegetables) is the most off-putting and sorry-looking achara I've ever had in my entire life. I would rather eat the achara that comes in a bottle. Achara FAIL!
Review Source:Came back for the first time in years today. I definitely remember the food being better but the service was as bad as I remember it.
Sat at our tables for about 10 minutes before our waiter approached our table. Ordered the crispy beef ribs per the waiters recommendation. The few bites I had were delicious, but 90% of the meal was either burned or fat. Not very filling. My girlfriend had the tuna steak and said it had a very fishy taste and didnt enjoy it. The waiter came in about 20 minute increments, so had to try to ask for everything when ever he would show up. Very meh experience.
This may not be Gerry's fault, but it may also be.... my girlfriend had a very bad reaction to the tuna steak. She turned red and had blotchy red marks all over her body. Also had a severe headache and the left side of her face was burning. COULD have been an allergic reaction, but either way, added to the horrible experience. Awful.
"I want to go on record -- this is not something that's hot now somewhere and will get hot everywhere else," he said. "It's just starting. I think it's going to take another year and a half to get up to critical mass, but everybody loves Chinese food, Thai food, Japanese food, and it's all been exploited. The Filipinos combined the best of all of that with Spanish technique. The Spanish were a colonial power there for 500 years, and they left behind adobo and cooking in vinegar -- techniques that, applied to those tropical Asian ingredients, are miraculous." -- Andrew Zimmern
Filipino food is Asian soul food. Â It is the "Damn your Gramma can outcook the Iron Chef's" food. Â It's the reason all your high school and college friends came to your house around 5:30ish and juuuuust happened to stay for dinner. Â It's the food that makes you finish your plate even though you had trouble breathing 10 bites ago. Â
Gerry's Grill does Filipino food right. Â I reserve the right to assume that this location has an armada of Filipino grandmother's cooking in the kitchen. Â Everything was just so good! Â The BBQ Grilled Squid, Kare-Kare (Oxtail stew), and Adobo (Pork marinated in vinegar and garlic) were definite favorites. Â The Halo-Halo (milky shaved ice) and fried banana's with Ube (purple yam) ice cream treats sure hit the spot! Â
We came for a special event, and the buffet was delicious!  <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/gerrys-grill-and-bar-union-city?select=Ow9dXPIuLf_GDjtBwP1i4A#Ow9dXPIuLf_GDjtBwP1i4A">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
Service was a bit slow, and the servers seemed overwhelmed, however it did not stop them from providing genuine and sincere good service. Â If I am ever back in the Union City area, I would surely return to Gerry's Grill! Â
P.S.:  There is a delicious recipe for Spam Fried Rice shared by the head chef of "Milkfish", a popular Filipino restaurant in New Orleans at this link:  <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.today.com%2Ffood%2Fandrew-zimmern-filipino-food-next-big-thing-824655&s=f6598e6a5b06233c7ab5b229b5147e77ded9801393a86f1e921b5c77558dd059" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.today.com/foo…</a>
Don't knock it 'til you try it. Â You won't look at breakfast the same way again. ;)
My mother is Filipino, so I am immediately picky with Filipino food because nothing compares to her home-cooked meals!! However, I tried this place for the first time, and I have to admit, it was very delicious. The Fried Tilapia is a must order! I also had their Chicken Adobo and Fried Rice which were both tasty. The atmosphere is pretty casual, and the customer service is wonderful.
Review Source:I would classify this restaurant as somewhat higher end Filipino cuisine. Contrary to many fast food buffet line joints that serve similar fare, Gerry's is a sit-down open area with a full bar and hot food coming straight off the grill. My top dishes here are the pork liempo (marinated grilled pork belly), bulalo (beef shank soup), garlic rice and garlic fried chicken. The pork liempo is almost always perfectly grilled with the right amount of seasoning, with the exception of it being burnt a couple times. I've had this dish countless times, so I give them a tolerable error of a couple mess-ups. The bulalo is just fatty, hangover-curing goodness that comes with beef shank from which you can scoop out some delicious bone marrow. The garlic rice is always right on point every single time - buttery and garlicky. The fried chicken is juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, which is how it should always be. I've historically ordered the oriental salmon, which is basically a salmon poke. A couple times, it was enjoyable, but then it was served to me still frozen on the inside. Needless to say, I haven't ordered it since. Service has generally been acceptable and I cannot recall a time where I was thoroughly upset with lack of attention.
Overall, a nice spot for get-togethers with friends and family or a place to watch the game. On weekend nights, there is a live band that performs, which seems to attract a lot of cougars and karaoke superstars.
Basically a Filipino version of TGIF . Â Serves all the island favorites. Â Majority of the dishes range from okay to good with one exception. Â The beef rib is excellent. Â The idea of beef so overcooked that it's crispy sounds hideous but for some reason it works. Â The meat is attached to the bone which probably helps keep it moist inside through the frying process. Â Eat it with the atchara (pickled veggies) that comes with it to balance the richness of the dish.
Only drawback is the service. Â It's plagued with inattentiveness which sours the dining experience. Â On one occasion, I called in an order for pick up and when I got there the person who took my order never even put it in. Â I had to wait an additional 25 minutes just so that they can cook the food I had already ordered in advance. Â
I essentially stopped going here because of the lack of service though I do miss the beef ribs.
Checked out singer tonight - Jackie Chavez  and she was good.  The food is average.  Nothing outstanding.  We had to wait quite a bit - got here at 7:30ish and didn't get a seat until after 8:30pm.  Luckily, we had a seat at the bar and got to order drinks and an appetizer or I would not have waited for over an hour for a seat for average food. Service was good except that it was a little unorganized.  Food portions were good enough and there was a good selection.  The performance was good.  All in all, it was just okay.  I wouldn't go back for the food.  There's tons of better restaurants for filipino food around the area.
Review Source:Adobo - I thought their version of adobo was okay...while the flavor was good, the meat was pretty tough and not the tender consistency one would expect from typical adobo.
Chicken Inasal - This Bacolod-style grilled chicken dish was very good, with the distinct flavor of lemongrass...the chicken wasn't as tender as I would have liked, but was still good.
Lumpia - These were nice, big versions of the typically smaller lumpia...tasty with a nice crunch on the outside, this is a great starter to a meal.
Leche Flan - This version was good - rich and creamy and a good amount of sweetness.
All in all, I liked my meal here. Â They have a huge menu so there really in something for everyone. Â Most of the dishes I tried were good, but not great...I'd definitely try the other items on the menu on my next visit.
Love the food here especially if you are new to Filipino cuisine. They have a lot of variety here and some western dishes like rib-eye or salmon in case you want to gradually wean yourself to  to seek out more authentic dishes. Â
It has become a weekly thing for my brother and I here after the gym. We always order the Adobo Rice and Pancit Canton dishes which is great in portion and price.
Service is a hit and miss during my last few dine-ins but I tend to order out in which case has always been quick and painless.
I wanted to have my son's baptism reception at Gerry's in Union City since we've tried them already with my eldest daughter's baptism. I called them twice on a weekday hoping to get in touch with the manager, but the person who answered the phone said the manager is busy. So we went there to try to talk to her in person. But we didn't get the courtesy again. Erika, our server said that she's busy AGAIN. So she took my contact number and name and promised me she'll ask her to call me. Three days passed and I didn't get a  call back, so I called again, TWICE, got the same answer, busy.
To be brushed off five times... Talk about bad customer service. Too bad because I'm a huge fan of Gerry's. Well, used to be. :-(
They had friendly servers but I did't think their food was very good.
I ordered their Tuna Steak... $12.99 for a piece of fish that was much to charred on the bottom, and didn't have enough meat... I couldn't justify the price. And all it came with was  small side of pickled vegetables... I had to pick the top part to avoid the burnt skin on the bottom.
It was pretty disappointing.
I don't know why we keep coming back. Every visit has been either meh or terrible - whether it's bad service (most of the time), subpar quality food (for example - Â lukewarm food or their sinigang containing barely any food in it or really runny halo halo). The only thing I Â really like here is their tinapa rice and bangus sisig - but not enough to say, "Hey let's go eat at Gerry's Grill today!"
Probably won't be back unless we're invited to a party or something and they are paying.
Horrible service. Been there 3 times and on my latest visit I just asked a couple of simple questions before getting seated. Waiter just stared blankly and refused to answer my questions. Don't know what was up with him, but I vowed never to return. Hit up Toppings Too right down the street. That's real Filipino food.
Review Source:The fish, noodles, squid, and pinakbet are great.
Beef caldereta might as well have been tripe caldereta. Â Nothing but grade Z stew meat that hadn't been in the crock pot long enough. Â
Don't try to get a seat for a large party on a Friday night unless you like hanging out in the lobby.
I went there on a Thursday and the place was empty not even one person in the restaurant and it took them a few minutes to sit us. It was 10 minutes after that when our server first acknowledged us (he was busy chatting with the other workers). I was hungry so I asked for a salad cause I knew that would be quick boy was I wrong again 20 minutes for a Caesar salad.
Review Source:Came here with a large party of 17 on a busy Saturday night! They were very accommodating to our party despite the craziness all around. Once seated (at least 8 people needed to seat a large party), we were greeted by our server. We received our orders in good time - not what I was expecting for our large party and the mad house around inside the restaurant.
Got a few beer towers, of note the Hef Hef Hooray beer tower! Hef + calamansi juice + 151 shots.
We ordered a ton of food. Everyone seemed pretty content with their orders, as was I. I have normally have difficulty ordering Filipino food from restaurants since I grew up in a home that always cooked. There was never any real point to eat Filipino food when we went out, 'cause mama always cooked a different Filipino dish every night. And because I'm so used to my home-cooked FIlipino food, my expectations are both high and specific. I like how mom makes, it's as simple as that.
I really enjoyed the Bangus Sisig. When I have it, the bangus is usually steamed, but the frying the bangus is a nice touch. Wasn't too crazy about the Pork Sisig, it came off a bit bland to me, and lacked the punch of spice and acidity that I'm used to from my Ilocano uncles' preparations. I also tried the Binagoong Baboy. The pork seemed extra fried to me, and the sauce was a bit sparse on it. Someone even asked, "Did you order the sauce on the side with this one?"
Another big plus: live band! I love live music with food, so the live band is a nice touch. Â It was like a little Filipino club at Gerry's, filled with lots of families, titas, and titos out on the town for a drink and some grub. Dimmed lights where the live band was added to that club/lounge ambiance.
Not too bad for my first Filipino food purchase in a while. Really great for our large party!
The only reason why I am a fan of this place is because of the CRAB BUTTER RICE!!!!My mouth is seriously salivating just thinking about it!
Everything else is pretty much standard. The barbecued stuff tasted like it all had the same marinade, would have been better if they switched it up on different meats.
The palabok was prett good. Their fried chicken was REALLY good as well. It was moist and juicy and was very hot when you bit into it.
I also like that they served beer towers and we ordered the hef, which was light and refreshing. The lumpia was exceptional and the crispy beef was tasty as well, a good different concept of doing ribs!
I had one of my worst restaurant experiences here today (referring to the food only.) My friend and I have seen this place before, and decided to give it a try today. We first ordered some calamari as an appetizer, cause lets face it, it is hard to mess up calamari. To our surprise, the squid was mushy (frozen) and had plastic in it (which was not noticed until our entrees had arrived.) My entree had arrived first, and it was a seafood mix of mussels, and shrimp in which I was told it was a peanut sauce (they used peanut butter (utterly gross).) The mussels had gone bad, and the dish was just completely bland. After about 10 minutes, my friend's entree had arrived; he had gotten beef shanks. His shanks were which seemed to us, as boiled, not braised, however was cooked well enough, but had no seasoning. His potatoes were overly salty, and soaked with butter. The only edible thing on his plate was the carrots, which were under cooked.
Aside from all of that, our waitress was very delightful, and understanding. She comped our entire meal, if you can all it that. I eat Filipino cuisine quite often, and know when it is cooked properly; this place does not do it justice.
P.S. The steamed rice was decent. :)
Great place to eat Filipino food, kinda sucks that its just way too far. I'm a sucker for sashimi and this place had the spicy salmon sashimi that was just awesome! Our table was full of appetizers and great food.
Spicy Salmon Sashimi: Best appetizer I tried on the menu. Not sure what the sauce is that they used, but I would get this every time I come here.
Tokawa't Baboy: I'm not a fan of tofu, so I can't really rate this too much, but as much as I can say, it wasn't bad at all.
Sugba Kinilaw: This appetizer was good too, pork and tuna marinated in vinegar, palutaan style. Pretty darn good.
Now for our meal, I was a bit disappointed with the sizzling chicken sisig, as it was a bit bland. Out of our whole meal, I was excited to try this on the menu (maybe the reason why I was a bit disappointed). The sizzling beef shank was pretty tasty. There was plenty on the menu that I would like to still try, and I will try when I come back.
I'd definitely come back if I'm in the area, but other than that. I probably won't be back any time soon.
Ok, I can't speak the Filipino Ambience for this place, but I seriously think I just found a new happy hour bar. If your a beer drinker, this place has the best happy hours that I have found so far. I was here the other night and for 18 bucks, I had 4 beers and appetizers (Shrimp & Chips). If you are look for a man's bar with a pretty nice ambiance, then this is the place. All these snooty filipina's (sorry ladies) can find a nice place elsewhere (Just kidding, this place is a family restaurant also).
Also did I mention how friendly the locals are at this bar. I was there and a guy they called the Godfather buys me a beer (Pretty cool guy I must admit). It's  amazing how many non-filipinos are regulars here.
If you are looking for a place to Bro out........but in moderation and in a non douchebag kind of way, come here. I will be back, and if you guys find me at the bar, there just might be a beer waiting for ya.
Gerry's grill is a decent Filipino restaurant that apparently runs on Filipino time. If the service wasn't so slow, this place would get more stars. If you're unsure of what to get here are few suggestions based on what my family and I frequent:
Sugba Kinilaw 5/5: It's tuna and fried pork in a vinegar-esque dressing. It's sooo good!
Adobo fried rice 3/5: meh, it's too wet in my opinion. I've had better versions of this but I liked how they included real pieces of pork in it.
Sizzling sisig na bangus 3/5: Not bad, but nothing compares to the ones I've had in the Philippines. Probably the most tasty of the ones I've had in the immediate area, but again, it is too wet for my liking.
Garlic fried chicken 4/5: It's crispy and fried to perfection. If only it weren't so unhealthy, I would eat this everyday. However, it comes with an unnecessary side of fries.
Tortang Kampampagan 3/5: It's good, a little salty.
The ONLY thing I would recommend getting here is the Crispy Pata (Pork Knuckles). Trust me. It tastes a lot better than it sounds! Deliciously fried meat, albeit it is pretty greasy and a heart attack waiting to happen but it is oh so very good!
I've tried a lot of other things on the menu, but everything else was pretty subpar - mediocre at best. It's also pretty pricey for what it is.
immediately when we walked in to get a table there was no host so we stood around for a couple minutes to be seated. Service was slow yet i didnt really care everyone working there is like in a laid back mode...
ordered crispy ribs, garlic rice, and the bami noodles
food was alright - crispy ribs was kinda hard yet i like the crispy texture only got 3 pieces kinda pricey for that... noodles were good but there was more noodle than toppings of shrimp and veggies. garlic rice was flavorless.... jolly bee has better garlic rice IMO
i got mix feelings about Gerrys grill, there are some decent plates but mostly average, service needs improvement even thought it didnt bother me there was plenty of tv's playing sports to keep me distracted.
Dinner tonight..
Seated quickly. Â Waitress was welcoming and friendly. Â Silverware clean. Â Â Â Â
Eats - garlic rice, fried Tilapia, Lomi noodle soup, kids spaghetti meal.
Drinks - Sago, halo-halo.
Total bill - $40.
All the food came out quickly and hot. Â The food tasted and looked great!
The waitress and the manager both checked on us at different times...nice.
The not so great. - a variety of 80's and maybe modern music was blasting through the speakers..not fun. Â This stupid fly would not go away from our table. Â The dudes that were seated next to us were drinking, sort of loud, and borderline disturbing...sheesh.
Probably the best Filipino restaurant around!
Would do business here again!
Eh, it was ok.
We ordered the sizzling beef ribs (that did come out on a sorta hot (definitely not sizzling) platter, the beef Kare Kare (they do use ox tails, just fyi) & the adobo shreds.
The Kare Kare and short ribs were "fall off the bone tender"---I just wish they were served at a hot temperature though. I'm pretty sure the dishes were made beforehand and just served transferred onto plate once ordered because we got our food fairly quickly, meat was super tender, but definitely room temperature.
Portions were pretty generous. If you order the adobo shreds, add them to the other dishes you order. It'll add a nice crunch.
Overall, food was ok yet satisfied my craving for Kare Kare. Everything was kind of on the bland side.
Every time I have been to Frederico's or Cold Stone in Union Landing, I have seen huge throngs of people waiting to get into Gerry's and have always thought to myself that I should check it out. And today I did and I am glad I did.
Luckily, it was not crowded early on a Wed evening and we were able to get a table right away. Alex, the waiter, was awesome. He suggested that we try the chicken inisal which apparently is an award winning dish. It was a awesome. It is grilled chicken that is very flavorful. The garlic rice was yummy too. Â The flan was good but too rich for 1 person, get it to share.
The place is set up like a sports bar. Love the beer towers, have to come back another time to try that.
I'm really surprised on how the quality of food has gotten better here over the years. Â When gerry's first opened, it was mediocre at best. Â Nostalgia is what kept me coming back, remmebering my high school days and drinking at gerry's in timog. Â The sisig and grilled squid was way overpriced, but it did the job.
Now, the price is the same, but for some reason everything tastes better. Â The sisig is more robust, and the squid is no longer overcooked. Â Their crispy pata is amaingly crispy and big. Â Even the pinakbet is actually really good. Â The variety of different fried rices also fulfills many cravings.
Grab a beer tower, and be ready to pig out!
First time coming here was on a Friday night, around 10PM. As soon as I walked in, I noticed that it was full of Filipinos downing beer and shots. Majority were "manangs" and "manongs" (think of your aunt and uncle- type of crowd). Not that I mind, but I was expecting this type of crowd. Apparently, they have a live band here on Friday nights. I didn't catch the name of the band this particular night, but from what I was hearing, the female lead singer was pretty good.
My friend ordered for us: Chicken Skewers, Adobo Fried Rice, and Hefe beer w/ a shot of Absolut Mandarin vodka. The Chicken Skewers (5 skewers in an order) were good. The chicken was very tender and savory. The Adobo Fried Rice was Adobo Fried Rice. It's nothing spectacular. It's chunks of Adobo mixed in fried rice. There was plenty left over between the two of us.
I went here for my birthday with some of my family :) and man oh man did I miss the Philippines after eating here! It's hard to find a nice filipino food place to eat around San Jose but this place delivers. It's pretty pricey, but worth it to me! My mom lives in the Philippines so I never get to eat yummy home cooked meals anymore (never take it for granted people!) :)
My favorite dish that I had there was the kilawin...I'm not sure if that's what they called it on their menu but it's basically fish cooked in vinegar. Really good!
I'd go again! I just wish it wasn't such a drive from San Jose.
Happy kainan! :D
Wait. Live music? Delicious Filipino food? Awesome!
Me and a couple guys met up here last night for some food and drinks. To our surprise, they had a live Filipino cover band playing. They played a lot of top 40 music, and were surprising good! It was a great change of pace, and the music was really enjoyable.
Now, the food. We ordered the adobe shreds and spicy garlic wings as appetizers, and damn... So good! The chicken wings were dripping soooo moist and flavorful! Bite into them, get that moist garlic juice and the spicy flavor on top. Man, some of the best wings ive had in a long time! The shreds were pretty tasty too!
They have, hands down, the best iced tea ive ever had. Their Gerry's Grill Iced Tea has the perfect flavoring and sugar content... if only it was bottomless!
For dinner, we ordered the BBQ Pork and garlic fried rice. The meat was tasty, juicy, and had a great bbq sauce on them. The rice was pretty awesome as well. The only regret is that they didnt serve fried eggs... coulda made a nice silog!
We hung out for a while, eventually ordering some coffee.. to our disappointment, the coffee maker was broken (and had been for a few months i guess). Please order a coffee maker. We had to settle for hot tea...
I will definitely be back.
