Had been craving Chinese, something other than PeiWei and decided to stop in for dinner, was pleasantly surprised! Restaurant was warm and inviting and our waitress was attentive and great! I would have given this place 5 stars but the lemon chicken I had was chewy and not a lot very flavorful. The wonton soup and the soft shell crab appetizer were excellent, we will be back!
Review Source:BUYER BEWARE !!!!
First of all make sure the prices on their take out menu are the same as they currently charge. We are mailed updated menus often and also get them with our food order. Â I asked for a mix of shrimp and scallops with Hunan sauce and was told ok. Â When my wife arrived to pick up our food the manager over charged for the scallops and then added $3 more for the shrimp. Â The manager was rude to my wife and refused to meet in the middle of what shrimp and scallops cost. FYI The shrimp are a dollar less than the scallops on their menu. Â After all was said and done our food was cold and there were 4 unfresh scallops for $15.99. Â We have been loyal customers of this place for years but no more. Â The manager tonight chose to take advantage of loyal customers for a few extra bucks, BAD BUSINESS. Â You can say bye to the $$$$ we spend here every year as it will now go to your competition.
This restaurant is open and has been redecorated. Unfortunately, the food is awful. My soup was served cold and I asked that it be warmed. I only got it back after my dinner was served.. Surprise! My dinner was cold too.! In addition, it was bland and nearly tasteless. The service was careless and indifferent.. I used to eat here frequently but will not return. Very disappointing.
Review Source:ordered "Arnold Palmer" drink, waitress was ignorant on how to prepare TWO times. Then ordered Happy Family; was poorly prepared and taste less. Hot & Sour soup was served warm. Egg roll was the very cheap and common industrial made, without any flavor or taste. not to mention the grease. I would never eat here again. Plus I think many of the existing reviews are bogus,
Review Source:I have been to Goldne Shanghai twice, thanks to a daily deals site, and both times I was happy with the experience.
It is a bit out of the way for most folks in Central Denver, so I probably won't be going often, but the food was very good and the staff was incredibly attentive. We even joked at dinner that we only had time to take one sip of water before it was refilled.
This is not a standard Chinese restaurant. They also have other foods from around the region. You can find Japanese, Thai, and other East Asian cuisines on the menu, and everything I had was great.
This is my go-to place for Chinese takeout on Sunday. Â I always order the Sesame Chicken and Crab Cheese Wontons which comes out to about $20 including tip.
Their sesame chicken is nice and crispy when it is fresh, but forget about the crispiness after it has sat in a refrigerator overnight.
Also, the delivery time is always less than what they say over the phone, but that could be due to my location.
Pros: Â Good food. Â Fresh, healthy (if you order the right thing), good flavor combinations. Â
Cons:  This might be hit or miss, but the woman who took my order for delivery was an idiot.  She wrote the address down wrong, so the deliverer had to run around a bit.  Also, she forgot to add in delivery charge or whatever in the total number she gave me, so  the driver got stiffed on his tip because I didn't have the cash ready.
This is a fairly small establishment, but it is well decorated and the waitstaff is fast and friendly. They serve everything from very traditional Chinese cuisine to Americanized favorites. We tried the Golden Sand Tofu and the Spicy Empress Beef. Both dishes were delicious, although I thought that the tofu could have been more flavorful. The best part is that the portions were HUGE--we were able to split each serving into three meals and enjoy the leftovers.
Review Source:First I did a take out about 2 days ago, this place is 5 min away from my place by foot!! So I decided to check it out. I had the caterpillar roll and the Alaskan roll. For about $17. The lady who took my order was really nice and the sushi chefs was also very nice. Seemed to be moderate busy and still only waited 5 to 10 mins for my order, not bad. The rolls where good but honestly I like the sushi Katzu rolls better. Well the 2 that i always get, I tried a new one today, one  they recommended and I loved it!! Glad i tried something different!! They also allowed me too bring in my own cup for the thai ice tea!! I would say 2nd best thai ice tea i have had :) Since its close to me n I'm happy with them I'm sure I'll visit them again a couple more times. :)
Review Source:Well it looks like the reviews are across the board! But I happen to love this place. I live across the street so it is always a nice option if I'm looking to eat out or order take out. The service has always been speedy and respectful, despite often times being really busy! During dinner hours, the restaurant can be packed!
My family is from Taiwan and we love the authentic Chinese options as well as the
Szechuan spicy dishes! The restaurant also serves sushi now and it's delish! Great presentation too. My family would honestly say this restaurant is on the best Chinese restaurants in Denver... sounds like others may just have had a bad experience. Give it a try! The food is definitely worth it!
I needed to have dinner for 14 or more. Â Chinese was easy to pick up so that is what I did. Â I ordered a few chicken dishes and meat dishes. Â They said 6 would ve enough. Â I also ordered egg rolls and they gave me a few puffs with cheese. Â There was plenty of brown rice. Â They really were very nice and carried the box to the car. Â
I got to the house and put everything on the table. Â What no chop sticks! Â I was going to drive back just to get them but was told no forks would do just fine. Â I mean really forks with Chinese food.
Anyway I freaked because I did not think I ordered enough. Â Maybe it was because there didn't seem to be enough meat or chicken in the dishes themselves. Â So I ended up going back and getting 4 more dishes. Â I finally got my chopsticks. Â
In the end we had more than enough food and two of us took dishes home. Â The food was ok and since I am not even crazy about Chinese I may not be the best critic but I was not crazy about the food. Â People were fed and they seemed to enjoy what they ate. Â Phew. Â Another dinner down.
I had an unpleasant upselling experience here similar to Catherine's. We ordered the Sushi for Two dinner. The waiter asked us what "special roll" we would like to go with it. The food was decent. But when the bill arrived, the "special roll" was not included in the Sushi for Two dinner but charged separately.
It's odd that a restaurant would be willing to cause the customer to have a bad experience just for the sake of scoring a few extra bucks.
Pretty good - got a flyer on my apartment door and figured I'd give it a whirl on one cold icy day. Tasty Chinese takeout and reasonably priced in my opinion. I appreciate the brown rice substitute option, and everything I've gotten so far was tasty and not overly greasy-feeling like you get sometimes. Â Quick delivery and service, all the staff I've encountered have been nice. Typical Chinese restaurant interior, I like the little bar/sushi area in the corner. Â I'll definitely keep this place in my "I'm too lazy to cook today" rotation!
Review Source:While I'm always willing to give a restaurant the benefit of a doubt when it comes to my first time eating there, with the rave reviews featured for Golden Shanghai, I was really quite disappointed with my meal last night. I found the food quite bland, and considering I ordered the Kung Pao chicken, that's really saying something. We also ordered dumplings, which were laughably small.
I can't reccommend Golden Shanghai.
I order from here often... decent food (nothing amazing, nothing terrible... that I've tried anyway) and very quick delivery. Â The chicken seems to be of decent quality in the Sesame and Orange dishes, and quite good in Chicken with Broccoli. Â Crab wontons are yummy, but then who wouldn't like a deep fried lump of cheese? Â But really, they do well with the amount of filling in them. Â I'll continue to order from here on a semi-regualr basis until I move... or until I'm not too lazy to master my wok I got for Christmas...
Review Source:I stopped here for lunch today, specifically to try the sushi. Â I decided to try something new - Sea Urchin. Â I didn't care for this, but I didn't know what it was when ordering. Â What I didn't like was the appearance, pumpkin smush atop rice, wrapped in seaweed. Â I forced myself to get over myself and try a bite - the flavor was very oceany, not too bad! Â Had it been more solid and less mushy, I probably would have eaten the whole thing. Â I also had a California roll, spicy scallop roll and the Philadelphia roll. Â All were delicious, the spicy scallop roll was my favorite.
I also had egg drop and hot and sour soup - very tasty!
The service was great and the environment was clean and relaxing. Â
I think the lunch menu was a little overpriced considering other restaurants in the area, but still not a bad deal.
I would eat here again! Â Just not the sea urchin.
I have so much love for Golden Shanghai, so I have to give them another great review!
Since my first review, I've eaten at the restaurant proper several times and have placed orders for delivery. Â Each meal has been consistent: Â delicious, hot, and spicy! Â I always burn my tongue on the spicy thai soup because I just can't wait for it to cool down.
I finally sampled some new dishes: Â Vietnamese egg rolls and Spicy Thai Basil Beef. Â Oh my goodness, both are so good! Â I was pleased to step out and try something new and not be disappointed.
Really, if you're in the area, stop in or have Golden Shanghai deliver! Â Fast, prompt, reliable service! Â Yum-o!
This place is a strip mall, just like so many Chinese restaurants, in and around Denver. However, that should not establish anyone's impression of this place.
The interior is traditional up-scaled Chinese with faux lacquer tables and chairs and elaborate fabrics wrapped in just like your grandma's house plastic covers.
The tea they serve is really tasty and comes piping hot. The food is definitely westernized Chinese and more expensive than a counter front only Chinese restaurant. The quality is pretty good and certainly better than I expected. If you come from either S.F. or NYC this might be up to snuff. If you are craving Chinese and don't want to worry about later issues and willing to lower your taste standard this place can certainly satisfy.
I have never eaten in here, but I am sure it must be a pleasant experience. The staff are always very friendly.
First off, Golden Shanghai isn't where you'd want to take an important client, but it's a great place if you and your family want a good Chinese meal.
After several visits spanning lunch and dinner, I can confidently say that the service and food are consistently good. All members of the wait staff speak clear English and are very easy to understand.
All meals are served with water and you have to order tea (or another drink) if you want it. The food is  promptly brought out and has always been served hot and to perfection. The food has never been too salty. It tastes delicious.
For a restaurant of its size, the seating area is only a little cramped and the furniture feels a bit aged. The fish tank in the front (with a HUGE fish swimming about) is a nice touch!
If you're looking for a good Chinese meal and enjoy being treated like a valued customer, Golden Shanghai is for you!
From time to time I have cravings for some cheap Chinese. The type of place where everything is already made and sitting in hotel pans under heat lamps to keep it all warm. You can it a ton of food for so little. I realize it's not the best food you can get or even that healthy, but we have have those things that we like and never think twice about things such as that. Sadly there isn't a whole lot of places Yelped in my area that fit that. I will have to physically go to places to see if they are that type of place.
After a failed attempt, I searched for any kind of Chinese that delivered. With a quick search, I found Golden Shanghai. The review I read didn't offer anything, expect for a link to their website, which turned out to be very helpful.
I called, found out they delivered and immediately places my order. I saw that they had duck on the menu and I absolutely LOVE duck. So I got an order of Crispy Duck as well as some Sesame Chicken and Crab Cheese Wontons. Before and during my order placement, I heard phones going off the hook, seemed like they were very busy. I was quoted 45 minutes for delivery. Fast forward 28 minutes later and I have a knock on my door. It was a welcome surprise to see my dinner there so quickly.
I was very pleased at the quickness of the delivery and the food itself didn't disappoint... not entirely at least. Their crab cheese wontons were the most cheesed filled that I have tried in quite some time. They lacked on the crab side, but made up with a almost grease-free wonton. The sesame chicken was labeled as hot  & spicy and it was anything but. Although the sesame sauce on the chicken was good, I wanted something hot. I wasn't happy about it. Finally came the duck. The familiar taste of the tea smoked flavors were there, there was a lot of big pieces of meat and not a lot of little crispy pieces. I personally like a nice mixture of the two, but I know others probably like more meat than the bits and pieces.
Even with the disappointment in the sesame chicken, I still enjoyed my dinner and knew I would be eating their food again some day.
Two days later we did just that. Sheri and I physically went to the restaurant. It's decorated as one might expect, the place had plenty of space filled with tables and booths. We were seated immediately upon our arrival and we choose to sit in a booth.
They took our drink order as soon as we sat down. We both had diet cokes and as most would expect a glass with ice and soda in return, the waiter came to us with two cans of diet coke. Really? Not only that, those cans cost $2 a piece. I was better off ordering a cocktail for $3 more.
This time I got a the Hot & Spicy chicken, which HAD to be spicy otherwise I would have to call b/s on anything labeled hot & spicy. Sheri got herself chicken fried rice dish.
*I got bored with my review so I stopped and will update at a later time*
