This place seems to be mostly a bar but they do have a decent selection of food on their menu.  This place has more of a dive bar atmosphere but families do bring their children here to eat earlier in the evening.  They allow smoking so the inside can get unpleasant if you don't appreciate the deathly aroma of carcinogens.  They have a nice small patio that can be a more pleasant, less smokey and brighter place than the interior.  They often have live music and the hamburgers are alright.

Love love love.  Good beer and food!   Not crazy about the smoking indoors but its MS I suppose.

It was not crowded and I ordered a rum and coke after a few sips I realized it was too syrupy asked for a beer instead. Bartender threw away solo cup and when we asked for it back he just smirked and said you should have asked that first. He was abrupt and not friendly at all. We left and went somewhere else leaving our paid for drinks behind  I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND going here there are too many other cool places Leo"s, The Office and Alfresco"s are much better choices, eapecially with regards to service.

Good food but service was VERY slow and they had almost no customers so it's not like they were busy : (

Week one: hair found in my fried pickles. Week two: lipstick smudge on my beer glass. I don't know what is wrong with the hygienics of this place, but I was embarrassed for them. I liked the atmosphere and the food was good, which is why I went back again after finding the hair... but a dirty glass with LIPSTICK?! That should have never passed by. They didn't handle it well at all, the waitress just laughed it off and didn't ask us anymore questions. I'm so disappointed because I was really beginning to like this place.

My dad just moved down to Ocean Spring and wandering the neighborhood we came across this little place.  Food was good, beer was cheap. The only thing we weren't crazy about is that it allowed smoking.  If that doesn't bother you then drop on by and try some of the delicious food.   The Humus and Hamburger I had were very good.  My Father enjoyed the Gyro he had very much.  Overall I'd recommend giving it a try.

We stumbled on this bar restaurant while looking for another place Wow what a great discovery. Beers on tap were varied , had an excellent IPA.  The bartender/waiter was extraordinarily friendly and offered great advice. I had the veggie cheese sandwich with humus spread.  It was THE BEST veggie sandwich I have ever had. The potato salad as a side was delicious. Great place, great food and great bargain.

This was a quaint place tucked onto the roadside in Ocean Springs! There was no crowd, so chose a table outside, I didn't care too much for the view of the wall (a sound barrier for the road) or the view of the parking lot - definitely something that should be addressed.  However, our waiter was prompt, attentive, pleasant and very hospitable!

We all decided to order appetizers and we settled on the fried pickles and the fries & gravy.  These were phenomenal!  The gravy was the best that I have had anywhere yet and I even enjoyed the fried pickles - and I don't even like dill pickles!  Definitely four starfishes on these!

I decided on the Roast Beef and Gravy Po-Boy, you all know that I have been searching for a decent one since I moved back last year...well I have found myself a great roast beef Po-boy (I will definitely be picking up more of these from here when I get my cravings)!  The gravy was fabulous, I wanted to pick up the bowl and drink it but Heidi made me share it with her for the fries that came with her burger! ;-)

Vicky had the Roma. She really likes eggplant, but it's hard to find a place that can cook it just right.  Well, she was blown away by this sandwich!  She said that the flavor was fantastic, it was cooked perfectly and the bread was just awesome.

Heidi decided to have the Grocery Burger. Well now, this burger has won awards for being the best in town and it definitely is a great choice!  This burger is "photo-ready" when it gets to the table.  Heidi said that it was one of the best burgers that she has ever had!  Way to go!

Jenny also had the Grocery Burger and she said that it was a superb burger with great flavor!

Yes, we can't believe that we ate it all, but we did and our tummies told us so!  We will DEFINITELY be making return trips to this place ... the food is just too good! ^-^

the grocery really is as good as it gets in ocean springs.  solid.  local.  and just a generally cool place to go.  it just feels right going here and giving hardworking local owners your business.  i am welcomed to bring my dog and let her peruse the crowd.  it's just a nice thing to know you have a spot like this in such a small place.  great food, great friends, and overall nice people.

I love this place. I really do.  Every time I've been here I see majority of my friends.  They have a great beer selection for the coast.  Friendly staff.  Cheap prices.  From what I hear, great food too.  Sadly, I've never had the pleasure of eating their food.

Went here during our mini vacation in Ocean Springs.  It was a Saturday around 6 and it wasn't packed and parking was easy.  The service was great and the food was amazing.  Apparently they do live bands and stuff later at night which I'm sure is awesome.  The Grocery Burger was damn good!

The Govt St Grocery is my stomping ground - its my go to place for happy hour, weekends, whenever. If I say "I'm going to the bar" everyone knows I'm talking about the Govt St Grocery, haha.  The staff is easy going and friendly and the food is GREAT! Nice little neighborhood bar with bands on weekends (lately they have been expanding the types of bands that play there so one night might be bluegrass while the next is americana rock n roll while the next night could be reggae).  The food never disappoints - the Grocery Burger won best burger on the Coast 3 years in a row and for good reason. They also have an expanding vegetarian menu thats really tasty - I like to say the Veggie & Cheese sandwich is so good it tastes like there's meat on it! LOL.

*Favorite menu items? Grocery Burger; Lamb Gyro (sandwich or platter); Veggie Burger w/ cheese; Reuben

    * GREAT Open Mic Night every Thursday
    *Non-smoking inside during the day
    *Great patio
    *Pet friendly!!

One of the best burgers I have ever eaten.  Visiting Mississippi for some volunteer work, we happened to be staying nearby the Government Street Grocery.  A colleague saw that they had vegetarian food and we decided to check out the place.  Their server recommended the burger and fries.  Also got a side of coleslaw to try.  Everything was fantastic.  We came back several other times during the week to sit and chill, drink some beer (great local selection) and listen to live music.  Outstanding place.  And the servers and bartenders were all very friendly.

Stopped by on the way home a few weeks ago and little did I realize what a great time I would end up having. A band I have never heard of was setting up and I paid little attention but when they started their first set my mood quickly changed.
DD Thunder a three piece band playing rockabilly and music influenced by Les Paul. Songs from bands like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Stray Cats and others to numerous to mention. Their were only a handfull of patrons enjoying music that I would gladly had paid a cover to see. It was disapointing seeing local kids passing us up to go to the daiquiri bar next door , shame that they didnt know what great music they were missing. Govt St Grocery is without a doubt the best live music venue around and my bartab was very light. Kudo's guys!

This place is a bit of a gem. Sure, it's not perfect. But there is plenty of parking and they have some decent live bands, to boot. The food is actually really good (and I don't mean the MREs I ate there after Hurricane Katrina). They have a pretty good beer selection as well. Most significantly, this bar does a lot for the community in terms of fundraisers and the like. Can't wait to go back next week.

Good food but AWFUL service! Came around noon on a Saturday but wasn't very crowded.  10 minute wait to get acknowledged. Another 15 minutes to get drinks ordered. 15 minutes to get them delivered. 20 minutes to take our order (2 burgers and fries and a chicken salad croissant). over 30 minutes to get our food. Only one drink refill the entire time and no other checking on how we were doing.

I've since talked to others and they said it's more know for its bar and music at night and the service isn't supposed to be great then either.

It's definitely grown on me...they have decent music (too much bluegrass though) but i'm usually there for social reasons so i end up sitting outside the whole time.  The staff is usually cool...the prices good...and they have Mikey's!!

This is a nice late night place to hang, inside or out...I preferred the outdoor patio. The service was a little slow, only one bartender working while I was there.

The food is a little more than basic bar food, they advertise that they have vegetarian menu options. Subliminally they got me, I ordered the hummus & pita bread with my beer (just a basic Blue Moon...can't mess that up). The hummus was very good, it was topped with bits of black olive and red pepper. It was a gigantic bowl of it too. I was loading up my pita slices as full as I could, just shy of eating it straight with a spoon and I still couldn't finish it all. It was plenty of food to fill that late night craving.

I was filthy from a day of building houses with Habitat for Humanity when I stopped by at the Gov't St. Grocery with the intent to buy a t-shirt. I hadn't been previously, but I'd heard good things and it seemed like a worthwhile place. Rolled in, greeted by a muttonchopp'd bartender and friends, and inquired about shirts. Three bouts of rifling through drawers and one foray into an overhead cabinet later, I had the last printed tee in the store. It smelled like old cigarettes and musty air, but it was perfect. I ordered a local brew, a Pecan Summer Ale, and, upon tasting, knew I'd made the right choice of location as well as bev.

Came back later that night for bluegrass. Two fellas sat atop the corner stage, plucking hearts out and yodeling to the heavens. Drunk locals of various social classes (but generally one race) stopped in to say hi, or just to bullshit with whoever was listening.

Didn't try the food, though I was told by several that it was comptent. Worked my way through all the local beers, the Pecan Ale and the Stout (flavored with sweet potatoes, tasting of chocolate) held the night, and wished that I'd be around for the next bluegrass concert.

Most importantly, I learned a new drink from the bartender. A 'Redneck Vacation' is a bottle of PBR with a lime slice in the top. It is as good as it sounds.

All in all, a good place, especially given its proximity to the camp I was staying at.

Great for outdoor chillin' with a great cold beer (of which they have a decent selection for Mississippi - thanks to the state restrictions). Their food has always been great when I've gone. If you go try the hummus and pita as the hummus is some of the best I've had. Great locals place and hella laid back.
