So I figured I'd write an update. Not long after the first review, my trivia team and I found "greener" pastures for our trivia fix at a local place in Westminster. Unfortunately, that local family pub shut down about 3 months ago leaving us high and dry for a place to play trivia. We tried a couple other places outside of Westminster but they were rather far comparatively and equally as expensive and only marginally better than the Turtle.
So update - I'm now fully confident that if a tasty food can be ill prepared or otherwise made unappetizing, Greene Turtle will find a way to do it. Their burgers are flavored only by the char from the broiler. Their flatbread pizza was a glop of congealed cheese and looked like the toppings were shot out of a cannon at the dough. The wings remain drier than a pothead's mouth in the desert. And mozzarella crescents?! Simply a fancy way to give you less and charge you more. I've resorted to eating prior to coming to the Turtle or stopping by Wawa on the way home. Honestly, not one thing that've had despite trying multiple things on the menu has been better than mediocre. How this place survives as a chain boggles my mind.
The only thing that gives this place more than 1 star is that their craft beer selections has improved greatly. Wednesday night offers $2 off all craft and premium pints so for a relatively reasonable cost I can drink Dogfish 60 minute, Loose Cannon IPA, Sam Seasonal, Blue Moon and various other tasty beers that many of the chains in Westminster don't provide. The only other thing that keeps me coming back is Amanda the bartender who works on Wednesday nights. Best server I've had at the Turtle by far. She's friendly, timely and knows how to take care of customers.
Only self loathing and trivia keep me coming back here. It's too late for me but save yourself! Run, run away!
First off, the server and manager were very nice, especially the server. However, I do have a tip for the manager - when I'm complaining, you'd do best to listen and say, "I hear you. Â Here is my solution, ::xxxxx::. Â Does this solution alleviate any of the problem for you?". Â You did a good job of listening, but you tried to explain why the problem existed and because of that, just kind of sounded silly.
So, I haven't yet told the Yelp community what the problem was...The problem was the price of the crab cake dish. Â $25 for a tiny bit of crab and a handful of fries. Â I felt like I paid $10 for the fries and therefore totally ripped off. Â The first word out of my mouth when the plate came was, "Outrageous!". Â I literally blurted it out! Â I couldn't believe my own reaction; shocked by my reaction and by the tiny bit of food they just gave me for $25.
The ahi tuna that my father had was quite good, if not a little over spiced. Â Despite this, I have to give the place a 1 star rating. Â I felt so ripped off, I'm still complaining about it hours later. Â I guess its not surprising that my first review on Yelp is a complaint. Â I'm not one to complain to a manager, let alone write a bad review on Yelp; this is totally out of character for me. Â But, I felt robbed!
Chilly day in Westminster with a chilly reception from the Green Turtle General Manager. We were seated in a booth next to the windows, finishing our meal and thinking about dessert. The GM comes by and proceeds to raise the shades on every window on the wall. Immediate temp change and we could feel the cold draft.
Another booth behind us quickly commented to the GM about the cold....his response...."you'll get used to it." In appropriate tone and response.
No dessert....we packed up, paid the bill and left.
Food was good as was the service.
Maybe Steve and the OC turtle management team should pay a visit to this franchise GM.
Each Greene Turtle seems to have their own style and ambiance. This is very open with the bar as the dominating feature. I really like the "jumbotron" over the bar, the multitude of flat screen TVs and the mini-flat screens at each table area. You can catch any game - no fighting over the TV.
The food is your basic bar food with the same offerings at the other Green Turtle bars. I have to say, this restaurant turns food out quickly. It's great if you are hungry. We ordered the Philly Cheese Steak and the Chicken Cheese Steak. The Philly Cheese Steak was decent, but the Chicken Cheese Steak had nice chunks of chicken that were perfectly cooked. They do chicken right! We liked the drink specials - $2.25 for 22 oz Miller Lite.
We had a great server that was attentive, friendly and efficient. She made sure we had drinks and checked back on us frequently. I was impressed especially with our group of 8 and managing her other tables for a night of trivia.
