I don't know if I got here on a bad night or what, but based off everyones fantastic reviews of this place I think I'll have to give it a second try. We got here real early on in the night probably around 9 or so and this place was DEAD. I went up to order three bottles of beer and the bartender asked me to tell her how much the total was, then almost forgot to give me change because as she put it 'it's hard to do math when you're so drunk you can barely breath'. I got it, you are tending bar and you'll have a drink, no problem...but I shouldn't have to worry about losing about 20$ because you can't control yourself enough to do basic subtraction. The guy next to me ended up having his tab totally screwed up as well. Overall, not a great experience, and I'll have to try again sometime.
Review Source:Saturday Night! just saying'....
The DJ's on Saturday night make Group THE place to be on Saturday Night. Â Your not stuck with just one DJ the whole night Richard brings people from all over to spin with him.
Let's not forget my cutie patootie bartender. You'll find her ALWAYS smiling no matter what kinda night she's having. I would say you can't miss her but she's kinda short ;o)
The rest of the weeknights at group are still a lot of fun if you have a group of friends with you. Columbia is very slow during the week but you can count on Group to have something going on!
Here are all the things I should have done at Group Therapy:
Get drinks - the bartender came over right away
Dance - they had a whole room for dancing and there were a ton of people in there
Talk to people - it looked like a better crowd (i.e. not as ridiculously young and fratty or old and depressed like some nearby places)
Stayed out late - we didn't even go in until 2:30
What I actually did at Group Therapy:
Burn my tongue by not letting my huge helping of chicken fingers cool (delish, btw)
Not talk to anyone except for the girl who I almost fought because she cut me in line for the bathroom
It looked like a fun place, somewhere I would definitely go if I lived in Cola, but by that point in the evening, I was only interested in one thing. Chicken fingers.
I have only eaten here once, the wings were pretty delicous. I think the best night to go is definitely Saturday night. They play awesome techno in the outdoor deck, complete with flashing and colorful lights. I love to go just to people watch, there are some awesome techno dancers but there is always a diverse crowd and $8 pitchers of long island :)
Review Source:Love this bar! I totally miss this place that I used to go when I was at school. Love the bartenders. Love the atmosphere.
Highlight: DJs on Saturday night if they're still doing this. SO MUCH FUN! Also, the fact that they have smoking in the back patio area is appealing.
The fact that they started delivering food toward the end of my college years was a leading factor of my weight gain!!! We LOVED everything on their delivery menu, perfect for late night munchies! Warning, though: delivery times are not reliable. Sometimes it took WAY too long and the food was cold when it got to us.
My initial impression was that this was the perfect mix of my two favorite bars back in college. Â Part pan-collegiate hang out with a liberal bent, part divy locals bar. Â I saddled up at the front bar for a solid burger (the Swiss Moose with curly fries) and beer while I read my book and soaked up the eclectic crowd of hippies, bikers, middle-aged locals, hipsters, and generic college-types.
They have a nice tap selection and full bar, with all drinks served in plastic cups. Â The usual suspects for bottled beer, including $1.75 PBRs. Â The prices were all very reasonable - easy on a college budget without feeling like you're having to skimp on the food or beverage.
As the evening wore on, the crowd evolved and the cozy, random collection of patrons gave way to more of the douchey frat set who appeared to be settling in for the evening.  A guy sidled up next to me and asked what I was reading, then remarked  that he loves to read but had never seen anyone reading at a bar before.  That was my signal to close my tab and head back to the hotel.
Maybe I just hit it on the wrong night, but I think I'm probably a little past my prime to fully appreciate Group Therapy when it gets down to business, even though I definitely felt right at home earlier in the evening before the shift in the crowd. Â It was one of the most satisfying meals I had during my stay in Columbia, and I did enjoy the overall experience until towards the end end of my visit. Â I'd say 3.5 stars is pretty accurate, but I'll err on the side of a good time in this case.
Group Therapy - it is a Columbia institution. Â This place stays open late - i have stumbled out of there around 4am! Â They have an outdoor "patio" area in back and usually spin some good tunes there. Â This is a college bar so it is not pristine but it is a lot of fun and you will find all your friends here at some point!
Review Source:This is a bar-bar. It's crowded and eclectic and always fun. it's actually 2 bars and a pool area. I'm not sure if they still have it but it also  used to have a dj outside in a little court yard. Not for snobs. There is always someone there that makes you go "hmmm..." but that's whats great about it. Who doesn't go here. I've been part of more sing alongs here than anywhere else.
Review Source:I remember the first time I heard about Group. It was freshman year & this kid I knew told me he had to goto Group Therapy that afternoon. "Ohh, I see", I muttered, not sure what to say. "He must be really stressed out", I thought to myself. I had no idea that Group Therapy was actually The Bar. Your classmates go there, your professors go there, your boss goes there, your mother, father, pastor, etc. Everyone goes to Group. It's Columbia's own Cheers, & I miss it.
