One of the best restaurants in South Bend. I wish they had these places in NYC cause I would be here every week.
When I come here for dinner, we are seated right away and the hostess are always very friendly and full of smiles. Once seated, the waitress comes over to bring the free chips and salsa and get our drink order. Â The menu is overstocked with a variety of food items. Â I have had their signature Wet Burrito and it is amazing. My last trip I had the Cobb Salad and it was very good and filling.
The restaurant is always very clean and decorated in a Mexican style.
As for the bar area, their prices are very reasonable. The bartenders are attentive to your needs and I never have an empty drink in front of me. Plenty of TV's showing whatever sporting events are on at the time. Not a bad seat anywhere in the bar.
They even have weekday drink specials.. $2 margaritas! Â Even the crowd isn't that bad for a chain restaurant. Friendly atmosphere every time I come here.
Hacienda is ok - definitely NOT authentic Mexican food. Â However, it is close to my office and makes for a quick lunch every once in a while.
Hacienda is a regional chain and fits the model of an Americanized Mexican restaurant. Â Chips and salsa are included, but the salsa is on the tomatoey-bland end of the flavor spectrum. Â I never understood the appeal of ranch with the chips and salsa, but it's popular here.
Some of my go-to lunches are the salads, white chicken chili and the new naked burrito bowl. Â
Their frozen margaritas are pretty good and served by the liter.
I wouldn't go out of my way to visit as there are much better, more authentic Mexican restaurants in the area.
I'm from LA - Mexican food in South Bend is a joke! However, in relation to the other options in the area Haciendas is a great option and definitely has a fun vibe!
Great for happy hour - but I'd go with the traditional margarita rather than their famous frozen ones because those make me sick!
Their chips are great but their salsa sucks!
Food is definitely OK - but when the other option is Taco Bell...this is definitely the better option.
A typical Hac-rearenda. Â Bland food probably using plain Gordon Food Service stuff and no imagination (same for the ultra-bland salsa). Â Decent margaritas and I thought good service. Â But Uncle Julio's has migrated from Texas now to Chicago and if Uncle Julio's opened near a Hac-rearenda the Hac-rearenda would be defunct in a record time.
Review Source:Standard mexican restaurant. Â They go have a great wet burrito. Â I think I have yet to get anything else at any of the Haciendas. Â They do give you free chips and salsa. Â The good thing about the salsa is everyone gets their own bowl of salsa, so those germ-a-phobes do not have to worry about the double dippers!
Review Source:We visited on a Friday night, after the dinner rush when the place was busy but not full. Â
First, we knew almost immediately what we wanted as the server brought out the chips and (gak) salsa. Â She asked us about our drink order... we gave her that and then said "and I think we're ready to order"
and she paused like "oh wait, no, that's now how this is supposed to go" and had a stunned look on her face.
So we placed our food order.
We started munching on the free chips and salsa (YAY free chips and salsa, right?) but the salsa was like tomato sauce from a can. Â Just kinda tomatoey with a pulpy kind of texture. Â I don't remember Hacienda's salsa sucking QUITE so much. Â But did I mention it was FREE though?
Yeah. Â
She brought our food quickly (not having to wait is why this visit gets 1 star instead of a brick through its window) and away she went. Â Dropped the food and GONE.
We all ordered wet burritos but each of us ordered different fillings. Â One of ours looked about half the size of the others, so when the waitress returned (we were all about half done) he asked "hey, is this the small instead of the regular?"
She kinda fidgeted & uncomfortably grinned and said it was the Regular (large) but depending on who makes the food, it could come out different sizes... with a coy apology. Â (I might have read into her response, but it seemed like either she expected us to ask that OR she had been asked that before). Â We seriously all just looked at each other as the waitress just walked away... Gone again.
The next time we saw her she was dropping the check on our table.
No beverage refills... NOT ONE
no 'did you save room for desert'... no 'how's everything tasting'... no anything. Â Just a $45 check for 3 iced-teas & 3 wet burritos.
This is probably the 10th time I've been to a Hacienda, the 3rd or 4th time I've been to this particular location... and I won't be going back to the Portage location again.
Bland food with CLEAR portion issues
The price is NOT a value
Inattentive waitstaff
Inexcusable experience
Not gonna lie- the free chips and salsa boosted Hacienda's rating a half a star.
Good service- sometimes a little slow on weekends, good bar selection (margaritas on the rocks are somewhat skimpy in quantity), atmosphere's pretty good BUT....
This restaurant just puts Mexican food to shame! Â I've had more flavorful quesadillas at Taco Bell (and I'm not a fan of Taco Bell). Â Make your own tacos? Â Sounds great- except the chicken tastes like its from a can- no seasoning besides salt whatsoever. Â In summary, most of the food tastes like it came straight from a freezer, and there's no thought in the prep.
I usually end up at Hacienda at the request of others and often just stick to drinks.
The following is the email I sent to Hacienda corporate after MY LAST visit to their restaurant:
I visited your South Bend, IN restaurant on Fri 2-18-11 with some friends and was not at all satisfied with the service. Our server "XXXXX" was very slow getting our drinks, we received our drinks almost ten minutes after ordering (keep in mind we're eating dry chips and spicy salsa this whole time). We had to ask for every little thing and then wait to get it - XXXXX was not pro-active to our needs at all  ( napkins, more salsa, another Coke, etc.). When I did finally see her ( she wasn't available very much during our dinner ) and I did ask for another Coke it was at least Ten minutes before she brought my drink - by then I had finished my meal. She brought our bill and then disappeared again - I finally gave the bill and cash to a manager who must have found XXXXX and gave it to her. XXXXX  then asked me IF I needed any change back, which is the same as asking  for a tip. My friends also picked -up on this and we commented on how rude
and poorly trained XXXXX Â was. My friends were the ones who suggested Hacienda- they sort of apologized. Our bill for three was approx $47.00 ( we all split the bill). Â I expected better from a national chain like Hacienda.
To top it all off the food really is not very good - for the money we spent we could have gotten good food at any number of REAL Mexican restaurants in the area!!!

Gotta love Hacienda.
After completely striking out at a couple of the new fancy-schmancy over-priced restaurants in town, we knew that our old friend Hacienda would welcome us back with open arms.
Good food, good value, friendly service, warm atmosphere and an all around family-friendly good time.
I had shrimp fajitas - the shrimp were giant and it was delicious. Everyone else had their favorite (Hacienda's speciality "since 1978"), the Wet Burrito. Our server struggled a little bit, but he was clearly trying and what he lacked in talent, he more than made up for in heart and personality.
Hacienda, we may stray on occasion, but we will always come back to you :)
Love love LOVE Hacienda! It's not 'authentic' food, but it's damn delicious! I get pretty much the same thing every time I go. Love the chimichangas. Nom! They have good drink specials, something different every day. My favorite is the Strawberry Daiquiri for sure.
Free chips and salsa, and their salsa is DELICIOUS! Also, the queso is great for dipping (it's in the soup section of the menu).
Inexpensive, friendly, and great food.
The Portage Rd. location is definitely my favorite in the area. Roomy, great atmosphere, and not as much waiting as you get with the Grape Rd. or 100 Center Location.
I live right by this location. Â Most of the time it's for the cheap margaritas. Â The service is usually good, and it's usually busy. Other than the fajitas, Â I personally don't care for the other food on the menu. The salsa is basically tomato sauce. No Flavor!. Â Fajitas and Margaritas earns Hacienda 2 stars...
Review Source:I just went here the other day and had a 4 star service. The food was tasty (but not authentic) and the service was good. The last time I was here I ordered a spinach quesadilla, I received a chicken quesadilla- returned it- got another chicken one- returned it- finally got what I ordered. Unfortunately, the others in my party were already done with their food. I should have just had them take it back and remove it from the bill, but I was starving. Hopefully that was a one time thing, but beware.
Review Source:I know Hacienda usually does not rate high on Yelp but I have to give it four stars for the following reasons.
This location on Portage Road is designed very well with a huge bar and a spacious eating area. If you are 21 you can eat in either of them. The bar is smoking and is completely closed off. The dining room is non-smoking.
The service has been good whenever I go there. Last night when we went, we did not have to wait for anything and even received our chips and salsa multiple times without asking.
Hands down -- this is the BEST frozen Margarette you will ever have. It's big, good and cheap. Can't really argue with that.
Many people complain about the food. Here's the deal. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant, this is NOT the place for you. Imagine an Americanized Tex-Mex. Â The food is not hot & spicy. However, it is good and filling. It's cheap and I never leave hungry.
I have always loved Hacienda. It's a fabulous little local chain restaurant and you are still supporting local people. It's a great way to get the flavor of the area.
Oh, btw, free WiFi in the bar!!
