Another race season is upon us, and so commences the yearly migration of motorsports enthusiasts to the warmer climes and hard pack sands of Daytona Beach.  As often happens after a long day in the Florida sun, I developed a thirst for a refreshing brew.  And so it happened that I found my way into the Halftime Sports Pub on the main drag of road not more than a five minute walk from the speedway.  What I was really in the mood for at this time was an IPA, in all its hoppy, fruity glory.  So I sidled up to the bar to inquire on their tap beer selection, and was greeted with the standard select of American swill, and nothing more.  I asked the friendly, though clearly disengaged bartender what beers they offered in bottles, and was given the same list of macro-brews as was available on tap, along with an Irish Red and Imported Lager.  And that's it.  Now I don't feel it's being overly demanding to ask that a sports bar, traditionally known as a good place to stop for a beer, should have a reasonable selection of said beverage to appease the tastes of a variety of clientele, and it's surely not too much to ask this of a bar located so close to the epicenter of a mass gathering of people from all over the country, who come with wallets open to spend their hard earned cash on a good time in palm country.  I was at this time curious to hear the logic behind such a seemly poor business decision, so I asked the bartender why there was such a limited selection.  After an awkward laugh, I was directed to go straight to the source, the owner of the place, who happened to be leaning in on the bar not but a few stools over.  Upon asking whether he ever considered bringing in a micro-brew or two, maybe just a couple six packs for the race weekend, he scoffed at the thought, and explained that this is a 'towny' bar, and you don't serve beers like that in a 'towny' bar.  Well, he had me.  There is just no point in arguing with that type of misguided quasi-logic.  I guess I'd have to find another place to spend my time and money, and it's a shame too, because overall this place isn't terrible, save for that owner who insists on denying those of us who ask more from a beer than to be wet and contain alcohol, the opportunity to enjoy one in his establishment.
