Came with a few friends and they were both thinking management changed or something. Â Food is pretty good, even though the waitress got 2 out of 3 orders wrong.
Low ratings because I watched various waitresses picking under their VERY short shorts, one adjusting her bra and many playing with each others hair near the food service area. Â All of these observations were near the cook-counter area and NONE of them washed their hands after these events!
We were there specifically for a show so I can't comment on food; my review applies strictly to the music venue portion of Hanks.
What a cool little set up. It comes across as rustic and all Texan. I love how when you're looking up at the stage you can't help but notice the Texas flag painted over the stage. It was a little too warm for my taste but it was pretty cold and wet outside so I think they were over compensating a bit. It looked like they had packed us all in pretty good but the venue (music/stage area) isn't large so I imagine it fills up quickly. I have no idea how many it holds.
I did like that they squash any sign of stage diving, moshing and general rowdy behavior (I'm getting too old to put up with that crap). And they don't allow smoking inside like the bars/clubs in Ft Worth. They have a tented outdoor smoking area and allow you to come and go with your drinks.
For those north of Dallas it's a nice change from the usual drive downtown. I was home in 15 minutes (using speed limits as minimum speed guides) and I didn't have to battle the drunken traffic on 75 or the Tollway.
I wish I had found this place sooner.
We get out to hanks for concerts a few times every year. Â Last outing, we reserved a table, and it made for a good evening. Â The food is average bar food, but the waitress was good, beers were cold and music was good. Â
You can smoke inside. Keep in mind that the stage is kind of outside. Â (it's covered, but airy)
I have never tried the restaurant portion of the place.
Because we live in McKinney, this is also a choice that my wife and I utilize. Â We have been here many times. Â The atmosphere is very friendly. Â Sometimes, it does get busy and the staff are working. Â However, they are pretty great bunch.
The entertainment is great. Â It is great biker hang out. Â Most the riders are very down to earth. Â One of the times we were there, a group of biker brothers were doing a charity for one of the fallen that had got wounded pretty bad. Â There was great support for the brother and I think raised a tidy fund. Â I ended up buying up a bunch of stuff that was going to the fund. Â
The food is pretty good. Â The quantities are sometimes overwhelming and the prices are very reasonable.
It is a big place with in and out seating. Â Parking can be problem when it is crowded.
So I have lived in McKinney for about a year now and have driven by here but never been. But last might my old boss' son played here with his band and i have to say I really kinda dug this joint. First off although it's a grill and the front half of the places is a restaurant, the back half is set up like a honky tonk with a great stage and perfectly placed tables with a sound system that is better than what I expected. I'm only giving three stars cause although I sampled the atmosphere I didn't have the food so i don't want to completely oversell something I haven't 100% experienced (BUT I will go back for the whole shebang....they have fried pickles on the menu. FRIED PICKLES!). That being said this is a great laid back place with a diverse clientle that is VERY live show friendly with some pretty awesome Texas Country bands on the bill. I will definitely be coming back for many future shows and for grub.
Review Source:My wife & I discovered Hank's by accident a couple of weeks ago. We were actually on our weekly trip to McKinney to eat at Hutchin's BBQ, but discovered them to be temporarily closed down due to a FIRE in the restaurant ! Knowing that eventual Hutchin's BBQ withdrawal symptoms were inevitable, we consulted Yelp for an alternative BBQ establishment in McKinney to try.
Despite being skeptical of the 4 star rating and scarcity of reviews, we decided to give Hanks Texas Grill a chance. At first glance upon entering, we exchanged our doubts with one another. The place is definitely geared more towards being a live music venue and bar that serves food as opposed to a traditional BBQ restaurant, but the aroma in the air held out promise of tasty smoked meats.
My wife ordered a brisket plate with sides and I reluctantly only ordered a HALF rack of the ribs with sides of baked beans and mashed potatoes. My wife enjoyed the brisket very much as well as her fried Okra, pinto beans and sweet cornbread. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ribs were in fact tender, had a nicely defined smoke ring and a subtle taste of wood smoke I found very appealing. Not only were the ribs tender, but they were nice and meaty, thick spare ribs, that time had been taken to smoke slowly ! The baked beans were served hot and had been flavored with delicious brisket and my only regret was how small the bowl (portion) was ! I solved that problem by ordering more beans ! I was sorry to find my mashed potatoes at room temperature and in need of a bit more "mashing", lol. I opted for the slightly sweeter of the variety of sauces offered and was very happy with it.
Since becoming spoiled by the "All You Can Eat" option for $14.95 Â over at Hutchin's BBQ a couple of miles away, my wife & I found the prices at Hank's to be on the expensive side. In all fairness, the prices are really not too far out of line compared to most of the "chain" type places in the area like Dickey's or Rudy's, and I briefly considered ordering ANOTHER half rack of ribs - but decided to wait for repairs to be completed at Hutchins to get my "cue fix".
The actual restaurant/bar facility itself is nice enough, kind of your typical Texas "Honky Tonk" establishment that happens to serve some pretty good BBQ. The place is named after the owners deceased pet bulldog, pictures of whom are used in the decor. Many sports represented by various memorabilia to please the Rangers, Mavericks and Nascar fans, as well as enough taxidermy mounted fish & deer to remind you your in Texas ! Plenty of televisions, good country music and cold beer aplenty. It definitely beats going to the "chain" places in the area !
We went here for an early lunch. I had a brisket sandwich which was pretty good and my fiance had the chicken fried steak. He thought that the steak was average, the mac and cheese was too salty and the okra wasn't very fresh. I was pretty happy with my brisket sandwich. Since we were the only customers there, the server was pretty attentive. It was pretty decent for bar food though.
Review Source:If you are a burger fan, you MUST try Hank's Hickory BBQ burger. The first time we went they had hand formed patties which is a big deal in my book. The next time (and all times subsequent) the patties have been pretty definitely preformed but they are good nonetheless and the burger, after the addition of the hickory BBQ and the cheese and everything, is one of the best we've found. In fact, I can't think of a better burger anywhere (though the old Londoner burgers came close).
Review Source:LOVE LOVE LOVE Hanks! It's a great venue for Texas Country Music. I've seen Two Tons of Steel, Eleven Hundred Springs, Johnny Cooper, Gary P. Nunn, Charlie Robison, Tejas Brothers, Sunny Sweeney... just to name a few. I really can't speak about the food - I'm sure I've had it at some point - but that's not the reason I go to Hanks. It's one of those places that I can stop in anytime and feel at home.
Review Source:Went to Hank's for the first time last weekend to see a performance of the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard (of Snake Farm and Screw You, I'm From Texas fame). Sugar Bear and I checked out the menu online prior to our visit, and decided it wasn't our cup of tea. We chowed down at El Fogon (fabulous as always) prior to the show. After seeing the food once we got to Hank's, I feel 100% sure that we made the correct choice to eat elsewhere.
Ray Wylie Hubbard is an AMAZING performer, but the venue did not do him any favors. He interjects interesting stories between tunes, and the sound system at Hank's was rather poor so it was hard to hear what he was saying. The folks next to me said they had seen RWH perform a few months prior at the Granada (or Palladium?...my beer memory is unclear), and it was much higher quality sound.
The good things about Hank's: the beer was plentiful, until they ran out of Shiner (royal suck!) and the people watching proved to be a colorful sideshow. The bad things: crappy sound system, running out of Shiner, and poor ventilation so it was super smokey.
This was NOT my first time to Hank's and I remember being very pleased when I went before, but this time, I have to admit I was not overly impressed. Â It took us awhile to get our drink order taken. Â I grant you it was a Friday night and there was a band. Â I ordered a chicken fried steak with fried okra and a loaded baked potato. Â I was disappointed when our food came because my baked potato was not even done. Â My significant other did not seem to have any problem with his food. Â Will I go back? Â Probably. Â I enjoyed them so much when I went before!
Review Source:Wow...what a great place for live music. Â The food (BBQ) is decent, but the main reason for going here is live music on their patio / biergarten and downing copious amounts of cold beer...for some reason this is the only place I will drink Lone Star. Â Our favorite band, Eleven Hundred Springs, plays here quite frequently. Â It is up in McKinney just past Virginia Parkway and I-75 (Central Expwy)..well worth the drive for music and beer!
