I visited Hatchell's with a group, and I didn't pick out the place, never been here before or even heard of it, actually. After reading all the reviews on here, I was a little hesitant and worried that I wouldn't have a good experience.
I was the first person in my party to get to Hatchell's, and no one acknowledged me when I walked in. The workers kinda looked at me, I walked around looking for my party, and no one really noticed. They were a little busy talking to each other at the bar. Finally, one of them invited me to sit at the bar and wait, and a few minutes later, others started showing up and we were seated.
We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and they were pretty good. Everyone really liked the fried pickles and the quesdillas. The spring rolls and the hummus were just okay, but nothing was really bad. It was basically fancier bar food, but I guess if you're going to a bar with others who are going to drink and you're not, the food is decent. I really enjoyed the vegetarian quesadilla.
The server checked on our large party quite a few times and kept our drinks filled. She also brought us more pita bread for our hummus. I did check out the salad bar, it's pretty small and some of the lettuces looked a bit wilted (only two to choose from).
So... it wasn't my choice, but if I'm invited, I'd definitely go back. Everyone seemed to have a good time, but it didn't really WOW me.
Good beer selection on tap. Servers/bartenders seem more interested in having fun with their friends than helping new or non-regular customers. And sharing shots with them early in the evening. I sat at the bar and was never even offered a food menu - you would think they would want to sell their "tapas."
Ultimately, I had a couple drinks then opted for take-out Chinese, which appeared to be a better option than waiting for the guy in the kitchen to stop doing shots and cook some food.
The menu recently changed. Â It also feels like they are trying to go for an "edgier" vibe. Â TBH, I miss the wholesome wait staff with smiling faces.
Out of four adults (30 somethings), only one liked their food (person 4).
Person 1: Grilled Chicken Wrap
Person 2: Marinated Steak Quesadilla
Person 3: Lobster Medallions
Person 4: Ahi Tuna
This used to be one of my go-to restaurants. Â Sorry to say that it's getting removed from the list.
Below average EVERYTHING. Food, Tap Beer, cleanliness, service, and pool tables. Â That being said, there are not many pool tables in Mt Pleasant, so I keep going back. Â I feel guilty giving them my money. Â Bottled Beer is cold, there I said something nice.
Oh yeah, bring your own chalk to play pool.
I've read a lot of reviews on here - seems like a lot of complaints are about the staff.
I went around 8pm on a Wednesday. There were people at about 10 different tables - a good omen for that time of night.
Our waitress was fantastic. She was on the ball - drinks filled, regularly checking up on us, friendly, and personable. I don't have a single complaint. Food was excellent as well. Ordered two different sliders - both were nicely prepared. Food came quickly - hot and definitely fresh.
I will be visiting again. After seeing these previous reviews, maybe they have decided to make a few new year's resolutions of their own. Better service and better food.
I have always wanted to try Hatchells and today decided that I would grab a beer, some food and catch a game. The place was about empty when I arrived. I was quite surprised as I expected there to be quite a crowd for the Sunday football. Anyway I asked the bar tender if the place had NFL Sunday ticket which they did. I then asked him to put the Jags/Benglals game on any one of the one of about 20 free TV's that were not being used. "I'm not putting that game on" was the response complete with attitude. I thought wow, well I am going to take my $$ else where. Seriously, the place was dead and you can't spare one TV. Needless to say that I will not be going back and if this is the type of service that is par for the course then I suggest you stay away also. No Southern hospitality here.
Review Source:Since I do not have anything to compare it to (first time diners here) I feel that I am being generous with my one-star rating.
I was totally disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. A number of our friends told us that since the new management has taken over, the food, service and cleanliness have all gone downhill.
As soon as we sat down we should have realized it was a mistake to come. It was prime-time on a Thursday night and we were one of three tables occupied. We were seated at a large table - seating for 6 - for just my wife and I. Before ordering the salad bar, my wife went to look at what they have and was disgusted by the flies she had to swat away. As we sat and she shared her story we started noticing just how many flies were in the restaurant. Absolutely disgusting.
Our service was extremely slow as it took a very long time to get drinks after ordering and our waiter continuously disappeared. When our iced teas came out they were nothing more than cold ice water. When I questioned the waiter he said it was the coke products they order and let us know that many people complain about it - he also gave us his opinion: "our coke products suck"
After that glowing review, we still decided to try the Hummus plate, the chicken quesadilla and seared tuna.
The Hummus plate was OK. The chicken quesadilla was "meh" and the seared tuna was horrible. In fact, I could not cut the tuna with a fork and knife. I was not expecting Ruth's Chris but edible would have sufficed.
With all the great restaurants in Mount Pleasant, I would highly suggest going to another place (actually any other place).
I like Hatchell's.  the people are friendly, the drinks are well made, the beer selection is great.  I've had a variety of meals here.  I like most of the Tapas... it's "fancy" bar food.  lol  I like the brie, the hummus, the salad bar.  I like to go on Burger Nights (Monday)... burgers are delicious and they have good fries.  I have never sat anywhere but the bar, so I can't tell you if the wait staff is great or not, but I KNOW the bar staff is fantastic.  Keep it up!
Review Source:Nope. Â Not a fan. Â I stopped here for beers and an appetizer earlier this week (late weekday afternoon, only a few tables worth of patrons).
Our waiter was in outer space. Â He came back to re-take our order, couldn't explain some unfamiliar beers on the menu, and took about fifteen minutes to bring our first round to the table.
We also ordered the three hummus appetizer to share. Â I couldn't tell any of the hummus varieties apart (except by color), and the hummus was served on top of really crappy-looking greens.
Saving grace of this place is a cheap and relatively large beer list. Â $2.50 drafts? Â Yes, please.
I didn't read the reviews for this place before we set out because we originally were going to go to the Bull & Finch, since in 2004 that's what was here. Â We were pretty disappointed to find out it had been replaced but we were also starving and decided to give the tapas a try since they had a pretty extensive menu.
I don't know if they've changed in the year since the last reviews but it wasn't half bad. Â Is it my new favorite place? Â No, but there was nothing bad about our meal or service at all. Â We ordered 5 tapas:
Spinach/artichoke/crab dip: The dip was good and came with some pita bread. Â I wish they had toasted the pita bread to make it a little crunchier, but other than that, no complaint.
Steak quesadilla: Â The steak quesadilla was my favorite, it was nothing fancy, but the meat was well cooked and the flavors were good.
Mussels: Â The mussels were a good sized portion and tasty, although I'm not a huge fan of a tomato based sauce with mussels (I prefer cream, because I'm unhealthy like that).
Lobster ravioli: Nothing wrong with this dish but it also didn't stick out in my memory.
Fried pickles: It's hard to go wrong with fried food. Â This was just something fun we ordered for my boyfriend's sister and she loved them.
I'm a little nervous about giving this place three stars, maybe our experience was a complete fluke, but if I was at Town Center I'd give it a a second try. Â So if you go and have a bad experience, don't stone me :P
I love tapas style dining, but I don't love Hatchells. I've only had a couple good dishes, and they weren't the next time I went. Probably the worst tapas I've had in Charleston to date. It only gets 2 stars for convenience factor and atmosphere.
On a positive note, the beer selection was good. I'll give just about any restaurant an extra star if they have Palmetto on tap. If I go back to Hatchell's and find out there's no more Palmetto? That's right, I'm taking that 2nd star back.
I also liked the casual upstairs area. If you're looking for a place to hang out with the guys and maybe eat before a movie, this might be a spot. Only if it's convenient, though.
Edit: I hear Hatchell's is under new management. It's going to take a lot to get me to try it again after my horrible experience there last time.
The food at Hatchell's was a waste. We ordered brie and got dry pieces of bread, each with just a sliver of melted cheese. We ordered egg rolls and got small, boring previously-frozen product. The chicken quesadillas were decent, but again, totally devoid of any interesting flavors. (Our service wasn't any good either, maybe they were too dead to have any momentum.)
If you must eat dinner at Town Centre, go to Tsunami or Benitos instead. There are plenty of chain restaurants in Town Centre, and while I generally wouldn't endorse them, you'd really be much better off at those than you would be at Hatchell's.
Take your date some place else. Â Hactchell's has lots of potential, but fails to live up to it. Â The service is so-so. Â The food is slow arriving. Â The taste is okay, but nothing special. Â We only go to Hatchell's when we have just a few minutes before or after a movie at Palmetto Grand.
Review Source:How can you beat a place that offers fantastic tapas and great mixed drinks in a romantic candlelit setting and on the other half of the restaurant offers the same fair in a fantastic sports bar setting, complete with 2$ buds and well drinks  and all the free chicken wings you can eat during college or pro-football games.  This place has something for everyone.
