A lot of thought and effort has been put into this place: this is obvious. There are many great things about the institution, labor transparency for one. It is important to me that I am able to see people making my food in front of me and that these people are not removed entirely from the visible. However, the food is just above acceptable: they do what they can in the little space and tools that they have.
The real issue here is the turnover of the staff. I feel like there are three or four core staff members I see all the time and they appear fairly competent. However, there are always these bumbling folk that I never see for too long who screw order up.
I love their beer selection and am myself part of their beer club. It can be a slippery slope for me however from big mug happy to I need to leave before all these bougie people judge me too hard.
Nice little coffee shop to meet someone, they have soy and almond milk, if you are vegan or lactose-intolerant.
I got a hot chocolate with almond milk it was pretty good. They serve it in a clear beer mug, I thought that was cute!
Food... felt overpriced. Not some place I would come if you are hungry. The "flatbread" is basically a pita bread base.
They have a bar section on the other side of he coffee area.
I feel pretty mixed about Hearthstone. Â While I love the coffee shop intertwined with pub feel, I wasn't crazy about the food, prices, or service. Â The feeling when we first walked in was awkward. Nobody at the counter, dirty tables, and seemingly confused bartender made for a great start! After finally asking how to get food and menus, we sat on the pub side and decided on lunch. Small but decent selection of appetizers, flatbreads, salads, and sandwiches. I settled on half a caprese salad sandwich and half a cranberry walnut salad. The raspberry dressing was the best part of the salad and made for a nice dipping sauce for the dry sandwich. The bread itself was a cranberry bread but was a bit stale. Nothing overly impressive. My sister loved her orange turkey club. Â Bread was soft, filling of turkey, bacon, tomato, sauce were ample. Hers came with chips and pickle. The service ended up being friendly enough but it seemed to take a bit for coffee-related drinks and smoothies to be prepared. Dirty dish/trash area needed cleaned up and most all of the tables needed wiped down. Evidently people like this place because they stayed consistently busy but most people just popped down with a book or laptop and didn't really order anything. I might consider coming here again for a drink or coffee but will eat before or after my visit.
Review Source:My husband and I love the Hearthstone! Â We go at least once a week for a nice sit-down coffee date. Â We love the drink selection, and the atmosphere is really relaxing. Â We also bring our one-year old son on occasion and enjoy time as a family. Â On weekends, there is live music which we have enjoyed a number of times.
We know the business is still relatively new and working out bugs, so there are some baristas that are still learning the menu and drinks. Â We both have been in similar situations before, so it doesn't bother us to wait a few minutes extra for our drinks every now and then. Â (If you want a non-personal, fast-paced, generic coffee fix just go to Sbux. Â We'd prefer to support a local business and relax a little when we're out enjoying our coffee.)
Most of the staff is very friendly, and one of the guys has even recognized us as "regulars" which tells us a lot about the character of the staff.
Check this place out! Â We love it, and will continue going there for our coffee dates.
It is a great concept - bar and pub. I have gone there a couple of times for the beer and an appetizer.  My big complaint is that I can sit there for 10 minutes and no one comes over. At least twice I have had to go to the bar and order a drink there even when one time I was the only one at a table and there were 2 people behind the bar! The beer selection is great  but when I asked about what a specific one tasted like I was told that there was only one person there who knew the beers and she would send him over.  So, in summary if you are looking for a nice place to have a couple of beers, music on the weekend, I would recommend it but warn you to be prepared for poor service.
Review Source:It's hit and miss with this place. On some days I go, I'm impressed by the food and drinks -- and I love the concept of coffee AND a bar; I've only seen it in Louisville, KY --and other days I'm singularly unimpressed.
The first time I tried a pumpkin spice latte, I was disappointed. The next time, it was acceptable, but not great. Their apple cider is nothing more than a pump of syrup and hot water (seriously? I can get a gallon of real apple cider for $4, and you're charging $3.25 for a medium squirt of syrup and hot water?), but then they make up for it by offering large samples of their red velvet cupcake.
Given their prices, I would hope for more consistency in their quality, and that the quality would be higher, but I'm still a fan and will continue to have the occasional meeting in here.
There's always an extended wait to get your drink/food....which is overpriced, and mediocre, at best.  There's SO much potential there, but everytime I'm there I hear "Sorry about the wait, we've got new management/wait staff/whatever".  I'm not  a fan, but I wish they'd get their act together so I could be.
Review Source:I went here last weekend to watch a local singer. I'm not a big fan of coffee houses as they are a tad dingy, cramped and hipstery for me, but I thought I'd check it out.
Packed into a strip mall area, it's a great size and doesn't have the cramped nature of coffeehouses. The front is a pretty standard coffee store and I'm not a coffee drinker, so it's all Greek to me. On the other side of the place is a smaller, but equally nice pub area. It's stocked with local beers on tap so I was able to drink something I enjoyed. The service was great, very attentive and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I didn't get a chance to try any food, I'll need to do that next time I go there, but it was a great experience for drinking a beer and listening to music.
First off, for the sake of impartiality, I have to admit my bias here: I love coffee shops that serve beer. Especially draft beer. Especially good draft beer. I'm willing to do almost anything to support a coffee shop that sells beer. Hearthstone has good coffee, excellent draft beer and a comfortable sitting environment.
Where I would ding them would be the food selection, which is a little sparse. You're basically looking at a few sandwiches, a couple of flatbread breakfast sandwiches in the morning, and flatbread pizzas. They have a couple of salads as well. Nothing to get excited about, but it's also not bad. I mean, if you're really hungry, it's not like there are no restaurants around.
They do have very good desserts though. Pies, cookies, brownies, etc. If you're throwing calories to the wind, you could always get a brownie and an Old Rasputin imperial stout.
And I should mention some specifics on the draft list: Flat 12, Sun King, Stone, People's, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel and a house draft made by People's were on tap the last time I was there. They change out regularly and, on Tuesday, everything that's been put on tap that week goes to $3. Drafts run from $4 to $6 depending mostly on their alcohol content, but the $3 applies to everything.
But you can, unfortunately, only drink beer so often. And this functions as a very good coffee house as well. It's wide open, comfortable, and the staff are always nice. Coffee is from a local roaster and tends to be very good.
I think the idea of a coffee house and a pub mashed together is a great idea! And it works well! My husband and I stopped in here last Saturday for lunch and we quickly saw the sign for the Pub and headed back there. You have to figure out on your own that no one is going to wait on you... we did by reading it in the menu so we headed up to register to place our order. Quick, friendly service and the guy working the register was able to answer my questions. I had the cranberry chicken salad and my husband had the club sandwich. We both enjoyed our food and it also came with kettle chips and a dill pickle spear. He had two beers, each different and he really enjoyed them. I ordered the fresh mint mojito and it was great! It looked like they were running a couple specials and events coming up so I will definitely check it out again! Word to the penny pinchers.. it wasn't a cheap lunch... our tab was $41 dollars so be prepared for that when you get your check!
Review Source:On a very rare day off I decided to call up my food buddy to see if she'd be interested in getting lunch somewhere. It was a chilly day and our usual go-to comfort food is pho, but our favorite Vietnamese joint is closed on Sundays and we didn't feel like venturing to the West side. Instead she goes "Hey, let's try that Hearthstone place to see what all the hoopla is about." "Eh, sure," I said. I like coffee, I like sandwiches, let's do this.
Upon walking in the place looks nice enough; there's a warm fireplace, some cozy chairs, overall a pleasant atmosphere. One can tell that a lot of time and money was spent on this place, and the effort seems to be well worth it. The coffee/alcohol bar is connected, shaped like a U, with the espresso bar facing the door and the alcohol in the back. We approached the counter to order some food and coffee drinks, the selection of which is impressively extensive. Friend and I ordered some iced lattes, a BBQ chicken flatbread to share, I got the cranberry chicken sandwich, she got the mixed greens salad. I was a little taken aback by the cost (pretty high for what we were about to experience), but food is something I usually don't skimp on, we paid and went on our merry way to sit at the bar and wait for our grub.
The bar top is beautiful and we marveled at the selection of craft beers and top shelf liquor. I don't drink, but I can still appreciate a bar that caters to people other than the Broad Ripple strip sh*t heads who are used to drinking Bellows vodka. With that said, we watched the young boy make our espresso drinks and became confused when he started steaming milk. The place was empty, no one in front of us ordered hot lattes, what's he steaming milk for? Why, our ICED lattes, of course! Yes, he poured scalding hot milk over our cups of ice. A few minutes later he produced two cups of tepid, watered down lattes (the ice had melted). I'm not sure if he was never trained on how to make iced drinks, but he was a sweet kid and he looked nervous, so we graciously drank them anyway. Then our food came.
My sandwich was mediocre. I love chicken salad and from the name of the sandwich I deduced that there were cranberries in the salad (cranberry chicken salad sandwich). However, the cranberries were in the bread, not the salad. Not a big deal, just a little misleading. I forgot to mention that I had also ordered a cup of the soup of the day, cactus chili. I'm a big fan of chili that have a hint of sweetness, so this was perfect. The cactus wasn't overpowering, but rather gave the soup a nice mildness that countered the spiciness of the meat. My friend's salad looked all right, nothing to write home about. She had ordered it without chicken, but received it anyway. Also not really a big deal. The flatbread, however, was a total bummer. The BBQ sauce tasted like it came out of a bottle and the chicken strips were the kind you get out a freezer bag. And the banana peppers were probably out of a jar. And the bread wasn't flat or crispy, it was thick and soft. I love BBQ chicken anything, so this was really disappointing. Neither of us finished our food. My friend gave the place a C, I give it a B-.
All in all, I have to say that mediocre food aside, this place has a lot of potential. As long as your barista is experienced I imagine the coffee drinks are quite good. The interior is really attractive, the staff is friendly and attentive. But the food...
I recently has the pleasure of patronizing this fine establishment. They opened up New Years Eve 2012 but I just discovered it in March. It's located in the same strip mall as Chatham Tap in Fishers on 116th.
I went in on a Sunday for lunch ordered a Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat while my wife ordered a hot tea. We both ordered sandwiches and thought they were very tasty. I remembering getting a free sample of a cupcake which was fantastic (I'll definitely order one next time I visit).
This place has a GREAT concept: 1/2 pub and 1/2 coffee bistro. It's perfect for me because my wife loves coffee and tea and I love beer. How many places can offer a nice selection of craft beer and offer great tea/coffee? I can't think of any...
The ambiance is great too! It's very large open-concept with a huge fireplace (hence hearthstone). It feels very welcoming, I hope this place does well and opens other North-side locations.
I really like this place, with only two complaints. Â First off, I love the atmosphere. Â It's a coffee shop and pub, and it's pulled off well, with the coffeehouse environment in the front, but if you walk around the bar, you are greeted by a little pub area with some of the best beers on tap you will find anywhere near this area. Â That brings me to one of my two complaints... the beers are pricey. Â I know they are good beers, but still... any craft beer or microbrew is at least $6, and a lot of them are at least $7. Â I pay it because I like the location, atmosphere, and selection, but if this place didn't win me over that would be too pricey of a beer for me. Â A pint night with good discounts would be a great thing.
The only other complaint I have is some of the staff. Â They don't always seem to know what they're doing. Â I can't tell you the number of times I've been and asked about a special or a drink that they don't seem to know anything about. Â It's getting better as they work to improve, but some of the employees definitely need some training on friendliness as well as being informed of the specials they are advertising.
Another great thing about this place is Devin, the manager. Â He makes an effort to get to know the clientele, and he will listen if you have feedback. Â The management here is really trying to make this place succeed and be a hip gathering place for the community, and I think they just might pull it off.
I could hang out here all day. Walk in to a cozy coffee shop with almost anything I could ever want - coffees, sandwiches, pastries... On the back side of the coffee bar is a bar bar.
The place feels like a nice living room - complete with fireplace and comfy chairs. Plus, the entire staff and most of the guests were super outgoing and friendly. I didn't try the wifi, but heard it's about average to ehhh.
Can't wait to go back and try more than a cup of black coffee (which was quite good, by the way).
I went here with my wife and 2 year old daughter for a nice relaxing Sunday morning coffee and breakfast and was highly impressed. Â I enjoyed the atmosphere of this place with the larger fireplace, nice framed art on the walls and a bar in the back. Â I enjoyed my coffee and my wife her Chi Tea but the service & atmosphere is what will bring me back to this place again for a relaxing start to the day.
They also had a nice little selection of games and small activities for children which was a nice touch.
I went here with a friend and was impressed with the beer selection and especially that they provide IBU (international bittering unit) scale rating for each one. It was also good to note that they have gluten free options. The coffee and veggie platter was first rate, too. The environment is smoke free and lively. Go visit!
Review Source:Coffee isn't strong because it's fresh and not overcooked, but truth be told, I kinda like my strong coffees. I ordered a breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg and cheese) on ciabatta and it was pretty bland and boring. I recommend they come up with a signature sauce, aioli or similar, but don't serve it like it is because it isn't making an impact. Bleh--I didn't even finish it.
French press is a must-have and for an atmosphere like this would be wonderful to offer guests. For those having coffee in, I recommend serving in glass cups instead of paper for refills.
I love their concept of inviting local talent, artists and such to entertain guests. Great idea and they should continue this venture by bringing in signature dishes and drinks made by or sourced from local farms, breweries, wineries and artisans.
While I do love the atmosphere, they're going to have to step up the food and drink offerings to keep people coming back. Think Petite Chou in Broad Ripple -- they have signature salads, coffees and sandwiches that you crave...use that "crave" concept and customers will keep coming back for more.
I understand they're in the trial and error portion, so I always cut some slack.
It is so great to have a place like this in our backyard. Â The ambiance is definitely the 'local community' feel, and everyone has been super nice. Â
We've been there 3 times. Â Twice for Trivia on Wednesdays (which is a blast!), and once on a Friday night.
The beer selection is nice. Â The appetizers are tasty (Hummus is good, Veggie Plate is good). Â If I could improve upon one thing, it would be to keep the soup of the day or a hearty stew on tap for the evening so there is something warm. Â I don't want a full meal, and understand they probably don't have a full blown kitchen for hot items...but if they have soup at lunch, maybe they could offer it at dinner? Â Seems in the winter a cozy bowl of soup, maybe some bread, and that gorgeous fireplace would fit the bill nicely! :) Â
Great work on bringing a great establishment to Fishers.
This was my first time here and without a doubt it won't be my last. Â I was lucky enough to score one of the cozy leather chairs by the fire and spent the afternoon reading and drinking coffee. Â Their coffee was a little strong but I tend to be a wimp so I'm sure it would be perfect for most everyone else. Â I ordered their chocolate flavored coffee and the smell was intoxicating. Â I liked the idea of having coffee on one side and beer on the other. Â I also loved the variety of cool activities they have with the live music and various tastings. Â My only complaint was that the carpet by the fire was really dirty and in desperate need of a vacuum. Â Other than that, it was great!
Review Source:First time here and I have to say, I like the concept. Nice fireplace, inviting and cozy chairs to enjoy your drink and read a book...which is exactly what I did today. I like the idea of having someplace local that competes with Starbucks in quality and a generally speaking a cool place to hang out.
So for starters let's review what I liked.
1. the fire place. as stated, very cozy
2. the fact the not only serve coffee and coffee related beverages, but they also have a full service bar on the flipside.
3. coffee was average
with that said, a little constructive criticism
1. person taking my order didn't seem to know what a french press is and on top of that;
2. they don't have a french press. (this was disappointing, for a joint promoting itself as specializing in coffee and not providing french press as an option to enjoy their coffee was...well disappointing. I hope they get this soon. I recommend taking notes from Tulip Noir (or even Starbucks) where they give you the press to enjoy at your leisure at your table.
3. the decor was nice, but (with a wince) a little dirty. The trash needed to be changed in both the public area as well as the bathroom. The floor was a little shabby too. Nothing that would deter me from returning, but definitely noticed.
Overall, I like it and will be coming back. I think I could settle into a routine of swinging by on Saturday mornings for a coffee (hopefully french pressed) and a little reading.
My friend and I ventured there today for lunch and I was sadly dissapointed. Â I will say the chili was fantastic and the decor is beautiful so kudos on both of those things. Â Now to the problems, the staff is hopeless, polite and nice but wow you need to invest in some training. Â Our server didn't know the items on the menu at all and while I understand you are new its very unfair to put someone out on the floor without adequate training. Getting our order in was rediculous, three employees tried, the third one got it in but then said it was $18 for a $7 item so two additional attempts got the price right. Â She then brought us water without ice - very european but not expected. Then the food came, the cup of chili was great, presentation is poor but hey its a cup of soup, the half sandwich was wow tiny, I do appreciate the portion control but not for $7. Â If you are serving something that small use smaller plates otherwise it just looks tiny. Sorry for the first bad review, I will try again in a couple months and hopefully have a better experience
Review Source:Amazing coffee and priced cheaper than Starbucks! Â My teens love the smoothies. Â My 15 year old daughter says, "This is the best smoothie ever!" Â She has tried lots of smoothies and makes her own, but none are better than when Shawn makes them for us. Â The coffee is fresh roasted and top notch. Â I haven't even made it over the beer side yet, but if it compares you can't miss it. Â And to top off the excellent drinks, food, and service, 10 cents from every drink goes to charity! Â Love this place and love these guys. Â Check it out! Â You will be back!
Review Source:When I first heard about the concept, I was curious. I mean, I like coffee... I like beer... and I like food. This place has it all! So when their soft opening came, I had to stop in. We were there on the first day they opened, and I keep going back. I love it! That, and it's right across the street. So is Chatham Tap, but I have never had a good experience there.
Hearthstone Coffee House & Pub is unique as it has a coffee shop and a pub in the same room. Kids hanging out by the fireplace and pints being poured in the bar section. I do like that you have to be 21 to get into the bar area.
Anyway, I will be sharing a lot of blogs about this place. I will be discussing the menu, the drinks, and I will even be sitting down with the general manager to learn more about where this place started, the focus on community, and their obsession with working with other local businesses.
Hearthstone had their grand opening on NYE, so 2012 will be a big year for them. I used to schedule all of my meetings at Starbucks... now I will be meeting at Hearthstone. I love it... they have a great beer selection too!
I really hope this concept works. Â The atmosphere is so inviting. Â
Teenagers can hang out, adults can have a beer, groups can meet and have a great conversation, or you can sit and surf the internet or read a book. Â The only recommendation I would give is that they would consider incorporating a late night appetizer menu. Â If not, people are going to leave the bar and go next door. Â The bartenders and wait staff are awesome.
