We went there for a special birthday on a Monday night. Â Right when we walked in we realized that the noise level was very loud.
One steak that was ordered was no great shakes and very overcooked. The waiter come over to take our dessert order, and we mentioned that the steak was over cooked. He said that we should have told him and he would have corrected it. We might have if he had returned before the table was cleared and it was time to order dessert.
After calling and confirming several times to have them sing happy birthday, they never came. After they said they would do something, they forgot again. Then the waiter said some thing right in front of the person who's birthday it was  No chance to recover. Awkward for all.
That said - not worth it. Can't say we'll go back or refer to friends.
My first visit, we were a party of 8, my friend requested a round table, we were squeezed in to a small back room where myself and one of my friends were constantly having our chairs bumped by the waitstaff the entire night -- with no apologies. Â The drinks had no alcohol. Â My warm mozzarella came with microscopic tomatoes and two tiny pieces of red pepper, and the plate was dry - no drizzle of anything. Â then I sat and waited for balsamic. Â They come around and dole out single pieces of mediocre bread. Â My main dish was a seared salmon that had no flavor. Â We ordered snap peas as a side at my request and I don't know how you F-up snap peas but they tasted strange. Â My husband had the skirt steak which he liked, a friend had the cornish hen, others had the organic chicken, chicken parm and scallops -- those looked under cooked and they only served 4. Â I enjoyed my evening with old friends but for the life of me could not understand the draw of so many people here. Â Why does everything have to change -- this used to be George Washington Manor which I remember as a landmark from my childhood. Â It's clearly not a tavern. Â It's a wannabe something else -- no idea what. Â Oh, did I mention the noise level?? Â skip it.
Review Source:This has become my local watering hole and second kitchen. Â The food is absolutely amazing - from the Tuna Poke or Bone Marrow appetizers, to the fish entrees and steaks, and the burnt broccoli and brussels are a must. Â The Lobster Fried Rice is a must with crispy shallots on top. Â Paired with a glass of the Marietta Old Vine or a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and you literally can not go wrong with this one. Â It's also a great bar scene and is jam packed on most nights but best bet is on both Friday and Saturday nights.
Review Source:Party of 2...had 7pm reservation..walked in, greeted and seated...perfect. Now for the not so perfect experience: seated or I should say squeezed in between a table of 4 and a table of 5...not ideal but whatever. Â Table wobbly...asked waiter, busboy and random bread man if table could be fixed, nothing happened until a waiter who was squeezing in between our table and the party of 5 knocked over my husband's martini because guess why? The table was wobbly....and can we discuss the martini for a minute...you would think that a place like this would know how to make a belvedere martini straight up with a twist..Nope, they stuck a lemon wedge on the side of the martini glass...not a big deal to some but as a martini drinker, the prices of this place and the scene they are trying to create it really annoyed me that they didn't know how to make a proper martini with a twist...okay, so back to the food? Panko crusted avocado to start...was regular bread crumbs, fried and good but very TGI Fridays like...not what I was expecting. I had scallops cooked perfectly..my husband had the ribeye and for some reason they served it all cut up for him which would be great for our 2 year old but we couldn't figure out why they did that. Â Sides were delish! Lobster fried rice and cream corn. Â My husband ordered a glass of wine with his dinner and shockingly enough it never came lol...ummm we skipped dessert and got the check. Â For the price and north shore location, the reputation and "scene" they try to create I was expecting it to be ummm different... Better, more attentive, I don't know...it was okay but nothing to make us want to go back..
Review Source:A wonderful, romantic meal with my lovely bride. Clubby, well appointed room. Attentive but not too attentive service.
The food was outstanding. We ordered seafood and would match their expertise and quality against the best seafood houses. My oyster appetizer of 6 fresh Blue Points was outstanding. We had fresh grilled branzino and sauteed black bass. Both best in class. All sides are al a carte. Even the coffee was good and I usually get a watery mess after most meals.
Beware: Reservations are hard to come by especially on a Saturday night. We had to take a 6:30 slot but they seated us right on time. This type of experience is expensive but you won't be sorry.
What a disappointment! Â Food is overpriced and under-seasoned: I ordered what was described on the menu as "Crispy black bass in a black garlic, Persian lime emulsion" -- it turned out to be a couple of slabs of overcooked fish in a tasteless sauce. Â The only saving grace was the raw bar, which turned out decent oysters and clams on the half-shell. Â The fact that this place is run by the same folks who recently closed Riverbay, which was arguably the best seafood restaurant on Long Island, is astounding.
Review Source:Had dinner here last night.  Ambiance and service were excellent.  Food, however, was disappointing.  We ordered the bone marrow and ahi poke for appetizers.  The bones hardly had any marrow in them, and the baguette toasts that came with it were chewy and stale.  Ahi poke came in a martini glass, about 6 cubes of tuna in all, not worth the price of  $21.00.  Entrees ordered were the skirt steak, which was good, not great, the black bass, excellent, and the burger.  The burger came in a baguette bun which was again chewy and not tasty at all.  Desserts were the only dishes I'd say were standouts - the mille crepes and the apple crisp.  Ah - the brussel sprouts were great, burnt and tasty. Â
Will probably not return. Â Food not worth the price they charge.
Great looking restaurant very over crowded. Â We had a reservation but our table was not ready. Â Couldn't even get a spot at the bar to get a drink while waiting 45 minutes for our table. Â
The food was good but not great. Â Many different appetizers to choose from . Â The Deviled eggs, Kobe beef Hotdog, and Zucchini Eggplant chips were all good. Â The chicken Parmigiana was very good as well. Â A great side to try are the crispy Brussels Sprouts Leaves.
It's been a while since I have written a review, I blame this on my Iphone. However, my recent experience at Hendrick's Tavern has motivated me to boot up the laptop and share my experience.
To start, I usually enjoy Sushi on New Year's Eve with my wife, sister and brother in law. Â We were unable to get reservations at our usual spot so, we ventured out for something different. Â My expectations were not high, I must tell you I was pleasantly surprised.
Hendrick's Tavern hit the ball out of the park in every way. Â
The customer experience from my perspective was exceptional. Â We were greeted at the door immediately and on a very busy evening were told our table was ready and waiting. Our servers quickly took our drink orders..top of mind of course that evening.
The options on the menu would rival any top notch Steakhouse across the country. Â I shared a bone in ribeye for two with my brother in law, which was served with the bones on side, split with crunch marrow, a real caveman pleaser. Â To be honest, I gave those to my Dane. Â We enjoyed oysters, salads, all types of side dishes. Â Everything was terrific. Â
This place hit all of my standards, Service - Star, Drinks - Star, Food - Star, Bathroom and cleanliness - Star, Overall Atmosphere - Star. Â Five Stars No doubt!
Saturday night and I'm expecting a stuck-up hostess to tell us that our table is not quite ready and escort me to the bar where we would be stuck for an hour.
Well, maybe it was just luck, but my wife and I were greeted warmly and immediately taken to a table in the main dining room. Major points.
The menu is very extensive - from a hamburger or pizza to large lobsters and a rib steak for two. We had the rib steak and it was fabulous - a real treat. It also inspires me to tell a story. The people at the next table also had the rib steak for two. When finished they discussed their dinner saying that the steak was delicious but they preferred a porterhouse. I smiled, thinking to myself that they missed the point. Every steakhouse has a porterhouse for two, but where else could you get a rib steak like the one we just ate? The whole idea is that this restaurant has something for everyone.
Was the evening perfect? No. The service was too leisurely for my taste and no one wanted to give us bread and butter. And, eighteen dollars for a fruit plate is more than excessive - even for Roslyn. That said, Hendricks Tavern fits the "something for everyone" niche that I've been looking for. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.
It's a great place. Delicious food, great servers. The one thing I believe the place can improve is that in  the dining area which is very fancy, they have huge flat screen tvs which just ruin the ambiance of the place. If I want to eat and watch TV, I'll go to tgi Fridays or eat at home. When I go out to a nice restaurant, I don't want to be distracted by sports center.
Review Source:Came here for the first time the other day and I'd come back. Nice place, but I wouldn't say you'd have to get too dressed up; nice jeans and shoes with a dressy shirt will do. The menu has a lot of variety and the food is expensive, but it was to be expected. The fried avocados were yummy. The crab cakes were delicious. The spicy mayo shrimp tempura would've been perfect if they came to the table hot & crispy, because taste wise they were awesome. The Mac n cheese was nothing to rave about. The bone marrow was different, I've never had it before till this night, but it kinda tasted like dog food to me lol. Not saying they did anything wrong, just not for me. I also tried oysters for the first time that night too and they were phenomenal! I Â tried my boyfriends steak and thought it was a good steak for sure. For dessert I had the chocolate cloud thing...meh...nothing special. I gave them 4 stars because I wasn't a big fan of the staff, mainly our waiter. He just had this phony, know it all attitude about him that made me want to regurgitate my dinner. I also noticed the waiters checking out my boyfriends little sister from head to toe when she walked passed them to use the bathroom. They all stood together in the middle of the room. It was just the vibe I got from all of them that threw me off. All in all, I was pleased and would come back.
Review Source:the owners of this place have done it again. Â From Toku to Bryant and Cooper they have the key to the best the North shore has to offer. Â Kerri is the most accommodating host and offers the start to a wonderful dining experience. Â My wife and I love introducing our friends to this place. Â My favorites include the Frieze shrimp salad and the barely cooked Salmon.
Review Source:I'll keep this short and sweet. Â
I loved the George Washington Manor. Â It was classic, it was old-fashioned in the best of ways, it was beautiful. Â Hendrick's doesn't match up in any of these respects. Â It plays its music too loudly. Â It's trying to be younger than the crowd it attracts. Â I miss the old place. Â
Alas. Â Anyway. Â
The food is good, service is only ok, for the prices it should be much better, bread was not served until we asked for it midway through the meal, if you read my reviews you know that is totally unacceptable, nice menu selection, prices are a little on the high side, but that's the area, overall I wasn't terribly impressed with what the owners of the GM Manor did in coming up with Hendrick's.
We were never here before the renovation, but enjoyed our night in the new digs. Â Food was very good, but if I can make one recommendation...you do not have to get the kobe hot dog. Â In all the reviews we read, everyone said, "try the kobe dog". Â You do not have too, it is a 12" long kielbasa that is 1" thick, wrapped in phyllo dough. Â It's OK, but very filling and after a few bites, I had enough and wished I ordered something else.
Review Source:Use to go here for Thanksgiving dinner all the time when it was George Washington Manor and although we tried other restaurants, this one was always best and most cozy.
My review is only for the Thanksgiving meal because I haven't eaten dinner here.. yet.
Price for Tday dinner was very reasonable-- $49 per person for a plentiful four course meal.
The butternut squash soup was delicious and presented beautifully (picture uploaded). The busboys also come around with a variety of bread for you to choose from-- multigrain, regular, sour dough, etc. The sour dough was AMAZING. I dipped it in my soup and also had it with butter. Too many pieces to be truthful, but so good.
The pear and goat cheese salad with candied pecans was also divine. Â
The dinner came with a healthy size portion of turkey (I requested white meat only, which was honored), a small medley of carrots and brussel sprouts, cranberry relish, sweet potato of some kind and stuffing. The breakdown:
Turkey is turkey, you eat it once a year and this one did the job.
The vegetables were fine, it added color to the plate and was a nice little healthy kick.
The cranberry relish was very good, but the portion was way too small. When we asked for extra, our waitress brought us more right over so that didn't end up being a problem.
The whipped sweet potato was by far the best part of my meal. They gave such a nice portion on the side for both my dad and I to share and it was just DELICIOUS. Dare I say the best I ever had. No marshmallows on top, and I was just fine with it because it was that tasty.
The stuffing was fine, but I don't like sausage in my stuffing, so it wasn't my favorite.
For dessert there were two options: pumpkin cheesecake (pictured) and apple cobbler. On any other day apple cobbler is my favorite dessert, but I always opt for pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I was kind of bummed they weren't offering it, but the pumpkin cheesecake was close enough. My Dad loved the apple cobbler (a la mode, I should add), and the pumpkin cheesecake was delicious, although very rich and sweet, so I couldn't eat the whole thing-- not complaining!
The wait staff was extremely professional and kind despite working on Thanksgiving and the craziness that comes with it, which I really appreciated.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend this if you don't feel like cooking one year.
Note: For parties of 8 or more they offered a buffet. This would have been ideal for us (we even asked if we could do it, although we knew the rule), and we hope they offer this for all guests next year.
Thank you for a memorable and pleasant Thanksgiving meal at a "home away from home."
I came here as a group of six and from the moment we valeted the cars the restaurant was exceptional. Â First, we had a few drinks at the bar while waiting for the table but I'm not much of a drinker so hard for me to comment there. Â After being sat, we had just about every appetizer and entree on the menu and each dish was amazing and never lacked flavor, presentation or portion. Â The service here was equally exceptional, very attentive servers. Â I highly recommend Hendrick's Tarvern, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
Review Source:Talk about popular! We ate there this past Saturday night and the place was hopping, busy and noisy. The bar was crowded, the restaurant packed, and the decor looking good. Now to the disappointing part...the food. We were amazed that the Toll Bros who have had stellar eateries before could allow such mediocre fare. While the service was attentive, the food choices were well below par. The only dish we had that was great was the eggplant and zucchini chips. The filet mignon, salmon and other appetizers were mediocre at best. In fact the filet was inedible. How can you expect people to put this on the "A" list if you can't satisfy the basic quality of your food? It took us a few weeks to get a reservation and we expected outstanding fare. This was not the case. We bumped into friends and they too were underwhelmed. They attributed it to the newness of the facility. Is this an excuse? Come on Toll get your act together. You're packed to the rafters but will it last? I hope that it gets better. But, it's a long time before we return. What a shame.
Review Source:I hadn't been to this restaurant in more than 20 years. Back then it was called the George Washington Manor and just guess what it was famous for? Hint: it wasn't the food.
So when I heard that gold coast restaurateurs the Poll brothers purchased the property and planned to apply their special recipe for emptying the ample wallets of the local faux-gilded set, I thought I'd give it a try. I took my beautiful wife and #3 son on the eve of his return to college for his junior year.
Coming down Old Northern Blvd., the first thing you realize is that the left turn into the entrance is probably highly illegal. Minimally, it'll prompt a few horns a blarin. We did make it to the valet, and into the restaurant past the bar filled with middle-aged men who apparently have forgotten how to tuck in their shirts and their women who surely keep Sephora in business.
The perky hostess greeted us, found our reservation, and had us ushered into a back room adjacent to an empty table set for 15. Nope. Not happening. The thought of sharing a private room with a private party was not what I had in mind. A maitre 'd quickly obliged our request for a table change.
I should mention that this restaurant is absolutely beautiful: dark woods, wide-planked floors, tasteful photos and art on the walls, flagrant flower arrangement, white tablecloths, and a range of different sized rooms to enjoy your meal. Â One downer: the overbearing "house music," as my 20-year-old called it.
Our server, an attractive young woman, was pleasant and attentive. The food -- two petit filet mignons, one shrimp tempura, a salad with pears, fries, chicken wings, side of creamed spinach, a glass of wine and an apple martini -- exceeded our expectations, but so did the check at $210, which did include tax & tip.
Would I go back? Sure, but not if I have to conform to the prevailing fashion code. Nice job, Freres Polls. Now what happened with your bid for Tavern on the Green?
Made the mistake of going on a Thursday night, noisy and crowded. Although we had requested a quiet table we were seated next to kitchen,
Service was rushed. Salads being cleared before we were all finished. Decor is lovely. Prices in keeping with better steak houses. Food nicely presented but not special. Will not go back, too many good restaurants without the attitude,
American
Hendrick's has taken over the old location of the George Washington Manor in Roslyn village and from the looks of it, the GWM hasn't seen this many people traipsing through its doors since old George himself was around.
The place has been totally redone in a way that incorporates the old home with a dark and cozy bar area and restaurant. Â The new owners are the same proprietors (Poll Group) of many of the more notable north shore restaurants, so they know a thing or two about what attracts the people in this part of the world.
That being said, we tried to make some 7pm reservations online via opentable but it wouldn't give us anything before 9pm. Â We decided to try our usual approach: show up at 7, hit the bar and stare 'em down until they sat us. Â Oddly enough, the hostesses got a table right off the bat so go figure.
The bar area itself is actually very nicely done and I can see myself sitting there quite a bit as the weather cools off - it just has that kind of fall appeal. Â We were led back to a nice table in the patio area. Â Wait staff was right there with menus and drinks and we got the festivities underway. Â Since we were newbies to Hendrick's, we decided to start off slow by picking at small plates.
The zucchini and eggplant "chips" with an almond garlic dip were just too good for words... ok so maybe the idea of veggie healthiness sort of goes out the window with the sautéed aspect of the dish, but there was plenty of them, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Since we were in no particular rush we decided to hit up the cheese platter next.  A nice selection of brie, gruyere and a Stilton came out nicely presented with green apples slices, fig jam, some dried fruits and a variety of toasted breads to use as a base to eat.  The cheeses were perfecto and we made piggies of ourselves.
We were alternating between drinks proper and decided to check out the wine list. Â Extensive and with something for everyone, the costs were of the usual two to three times markup, so no hidden gems there. Â We passed on the wine and settled for two splits of Piper champagne.
We decided to maybe split an entrée and went with the butterflied Cornish game hen.  Just a heads-up here,  everything is a la carte so if you want veggies and potatoes, you are going to have to order separately; like a steak house.  Speaking of potatoes, there were seven different styles which sounds like fun; unless you are the potato guy in the kitchen I suppose.  Veggies had an equally impressive selection of nine styles, included burnt broccoli... sort of reminds me of when I was married.  In any case, I can't justify paying for burnt broccoli so we passed.  The sides are of a decent size though and the pot of Lyonnais we had was too large for us to eat.
The Cornish hen was a bit under seasoned we thought it was crisped nicely and presented well, it just could have used a bit more pizazz - some cracked pepper maybe. Â By and large we were too full by now to try the desserts, which looked nice enough. Â I tend not to be a dessert guy in general so for me to eat them, I generally have to skip dinner. Â
The bill was on the high side, but when you take into account the whole place, the magnificent company I had and the level of service, it was worth it. Â
Nicely done from start to finish.
Valet parking.
4/5 stars for the niche this restaurant fills on long island. Pleasantly surprised by the rich and flavorful food, cozy feel, and solid service. Apparently its bar, which is completely separate from the dining area, serves as the watering hole for cougars on Thursday nights. Go get em grandma.
Review Source:Such high hopes
Has potential but you know what they say first impressions. Â
Was ready to make my regular spot but one screw up after another. Oh well.
The kicker the 'manager' comes over and asks how the meal was ... Doesn't wait for a response until moves on. Â Ridiculous.
Poorly cooked steak (although I am sure my dog will enjoy the $36 8 oz filet), terrible seats, poor service, poor hosts.
Once again. Such potential but they need to get their act together, valet terrible too
Willing to try again given potential but felt like an afterthought front the start.
Loved it! Food was amazing, will def be back! Â Went on a monday and it was a little busy, no wait for a table but a nice crowd. Nice spot for dinner or even just drinks. Def try the zucchini and eggplant chips app- the sauce they serve it with is to-die-for. Also the pasta zsa zsa and the mil crepe were fantastic. A+, without the poll brothers spots I am not sure where in long island I would go eat! Also, other reviewers said it was super old but I didn't think so when I was there.
Review Source:MEH.  The dinning room was filled with blue-haired old folks ordering gin and tonics while taking 45 minutes to browse the menu.  The bar was 100% cougar town - not so shabby 50-60 year old women stuffed in white pants and cabana print tops.  The drinks ARE better than the food.  I ordered the Tuna Pizza and it looked like a Hannibal Lecter special.  Large, thin, flesh colored pieces of  tuna draped over slices of pizza... every bite I took I kept thinking, 'It rubs the lotion on it's skin...it does what its told'. ugh.  Chef - recreate the presentation of that dish - 911.
We won't return. Â But it might be a fun place to meet the girls for a drink on my 65th birthday bash!
Hendrick's Tavern
The Poll Brothers have taken the George Washington Manor and converted it into Hendrick's Tavern, an exciting, sophisticated and excellent new dining venue in Roslyn, Reminiscent of the 21 Club in its decor and ambiance with a diverse menu offering something for everyone to enjoy. Loved the shrimp cocktail, salads, and oversized lobsters. Hendrick's has taken North Shore dining to another level. It has brought Urban sophistication and style to Long Island. Great Service, food and ambiance. Kudos to Gillis and George.
