Lovely fish fry! Â It's been over 12 years since I've lived in Wisconsin, and over 6 for my husband and now, we're back! We wanted to celebrate our first Friday as new Wausau residents by heading out for a good ol' fashioned Fish Fry. Â Hiawatha seemed to be the place to head according to my fellow yelpers and we were not let down! Â There was a bit of a wait around 6:30, to be expected - I forget that people eat much earlier here. Â It seemed to clear out around 7:15. Â My husband and I both went with the regular fish fry and had potato salad and french fries (half and half!) and everything was very good, except the tartar sauce, not my cup of tea, so I very much appreciated the malt vinegar on the table. Â The fish is nothing out of the ordinary, just very typical which was nice, comforting and very tasty. Â The staff was very accommodating to our daughter in her infant carrier and the fellow diners sweetly stopped for a peek and to ask about her. Â It definitely felt good to be back in our friendly home state. Â We'll absolutely be back to Hiawatha Restaurant & Lounge.
Review Source:14 oz ribeye steak, with sourdough bread, soup or salad, and choice of potato (mashed, baked, french fries, home fries). I declined the bread, got the salad without dressing, and chose the home fries.
The steak was good. A bit thinner than I would have liked (or is that just how ribeyes are?) but I asked for a medium rare and got a medium rare. The homefries were amazing! Thinly sliced potatoes, somewhere between a chip and a fry, had this delicious crunch but a great starchy center. Easy to make Paleo-friendly.
