This place is a bit hit or miss. Â First, it's a dark bar, and I love dark bars. Â Secondly, it's fairly cool looking in a chic kind of way. Â I have found that the clientele here is a bit younger than me on most nights, but during the afternoon (if I happen to be in the area for AHA or something) the place is usually dead, and you can sit and have a conversation. Â The prices were just a bit on the pricey side. Â A coors light pint was $4. Â Actually now that I think about it, that's a fair price. Â I can honestly say that there are two reasons that I have given this place three stars and not four. Â Scratch that, three reasons. Â 1. Â I know someone that was standing there mind his own business and got sucker punched. Â To this day he doesn't know why it happened. Â 2. Â They have the kind of clientele that goes around sucker punching people. Â I have been there a couple of times before for karaoke, and it seems it's not only a younger crowd, but it's the kind of crowd that needs bouncers. Â 3. Â I have never felt that comfy there. Â But then again, I have never felt comfy in a bar situation that you can't talk to the person next to you. Â If you have to shout, it's just not for me. Â So all in all, my recommendation is to go earlier in the evening, when they just open, and you will probably enjoy your drink and conversation with your friends.
Review Source:I like to go to Hibernia, when its not super busy, its fun when its busy, but I like the place, and generally enjoy drinking with a few friends here. Â Sometimes busy isn't what I'm looking for in a bar. Â
however, best place to go if you want to watch the sporting event of the evening. Â They get a pretty good crowd for "big games" and I totally dig the camaraderie and atmosphere that creates. Â
All in all a solid choice for a bar most nights.
PS: I don't do Karaoke so, I can't really comment on that, but I have friends that go all the time, and seem to enjoy it enough, but Contests at places like that will always be unfairly judged.
Just an update...I'm warming up to the place. Â Went on a Monday night, Lee Ann was working. Â She is actually an awesome 'tender with a great personality, and funny as hell. Â Had two dogfish, nice and cold (despite the lack of AC, huh???). Â Still not a "go-to" spot, but getting there...
Review Source:This is the place downtown where I know I'll run into kids from high school. Â Decor is kind of awesome actually, with a great old fashioned metal paneled ceiling (and a high ceiling at that!). Â The set up is weird, especially when they have a band playing because you have to walk right by the performers on your way into an out of the bar. Â The beer selection is pretty good, but with places like Rose Alley and the Pour Farm walking distance from here you've got much better options. Â
The bathroom situation is weird, as you need to leave the bar and head down a little hallway to get to it. Â Theres a bouncer guarding the hallway and you need to leave your drink with them, then you walk down this frigid hallway to a messy women's room where you listen to crazy drunk girls talk about bjs and throwing up and how good they look in their new tube tops
This place is low on my list of options for drinking in downtown NB.
Definitely a different crowd at this bar pending on the night you go. Â It has more of the emo/skateboarder style along with some preps sprinkled throughout.
A good number of beer on tap but the mixed drinks are also a good seller here, especially the grateful dead. Â I can't even count how many I saw the bartenders made within 15 minutes. Â Drinks here are deliciously strong, just remember to tip your bartenders well and they'll take care of you.
Its not a very large bar but there's a decent amount of seating. Â They have a few TVs around the place and also a dart board which is always in use when I go. Â It's an Irish bar with lots of old city photos along the walls. Cool little joint to stop in for a beer.
Cool place, but oh so New Bedford. Â I'd give them three stars if they turned the heat on.
I visited on a Saturday night. Â Hibernia draws a diverse crowd. Â You will find a mix of locals, UMass Dartmouth students, and a few suburbanites risking a visit to the little city by the sea. Â It's draws a mostly younger crowd, but there are a few older folks too. Â The drinks are reasonable. Â They have a decent selection of beers on tap. Â I didn't try the food. Â The house band is accomplished. Â They played a mix of classic hits and recent tunes and got the crowd dancing. Â One warning: on a cold night it is downright freezing in here before the crowd gets going, so bring a heavy coat (I'm not kidding) if you arrive before 11:00.
So how did I know I was in New Bedford when I was here? Â The dude on the dance floor with the sides of his head shaved and wearing white socks and topsiders was a dead give away. Â Where else are you going to see that?
Relatively new bar, where Merlot used to be on Williams St, across from Artificial Marketplace/Solstice/Joe Piper (i think the name is). Irish themed, but they have all sorts of beer and food. Owned by the same people as Catwalk. Smaller than Catwalk, but still spacious and nice. They have Irish music on the last Thursday of each month and karaoke on Thursdays, too.
